first-hand. The two-day program offers a
range of sessions covering all aspects of

Bachelor of Commerce guarantee continues in 2016
The Faculty of Business and Economics has confirmed that if students achieve an ATAR
or notional ATAR of 95.00 or above and satisfy the course prerequisites, they will be
guaranteed a place in the BCom in 2016. Students with an ATAR above the minimum
ATAR of 93.00 and below 95.00 may still be considered for a place in the course,
depending on demand. The course pre-requisite subjects are Units 3 and 4 – a study
score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in ESL, and at
least 25 in Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics.

Melbourne on the rise in global reputation rankings
The University of Melbourne remains the number one university in Australia according to the
Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings for 2015.
The University has moved up two spots since 2014, and is
now placed at 41 in the world.
It has remained the number one Australian university in the
rankings since they were first published in 2011.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Susan Elliott, said the
result was due recognition of the world-leading performance
of the University’s community.
“We’re pleased to again measure up so highly against some
of the best institutions in the world. These results reflect a
global awareness of the University’s activity by many of our
academic peers.
“The result highlights the strong international connections
staff at the University have made over an extended period of
time, and is a wonderful endorsement of the significant work
our staff are doing to tackle many of the global challenges
facing our world today.”
The reputation rankings are based on the world’s largest
invitation-only survey of academic opinion, featuring more
than 10,000 respondents from nearly 150 countries.

Happy 90th Birthday BCom
When the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) commenced 90 years ago, there were 10
students, six academic staff members (below), and 14 subjects on offer.
Sir Douglas Copland was the Dean and
he became the inaugural Sidney Myer
Chair of Commerce two years later.
One of the inaugural students in the
BCom was Miss Harriet Amies the first
female BCom graduate, not only of the
University of Melbourne, but also in
the state of Victoria. Miss Amies – was
just 17 when she enrolled in the BCom
in 1925 on a Free Place which covered
tuition fees but no living allowance.
Fast forward 90 years and the Bachelor
of Commerce has seen a recordbreaking 1702 new students in the
Semester 1, 2015 intake. 44 per cent
of those students are international
students, and 48 per cent are female.
Professor Paul Kofman and Professor
Zeger Degraeve are co-Deans of the
Faculty, and, like Sir Douglas before
him, Professor Kofman is also the Sidney
Myer Chair of Commerce. There are
over 270 academic staff members in
the Faculty and 57,000 alumni in 89
countries across the globe, including
some of Australia’s most prominent
business and political leaders.
From famous comedians to Wall
Street executives, the BCom alumni
community spans countries, industries,
organisations and disciplines. We are
immensely proud of our alumni and of
the Bachelor of Commerce itself. We
would love to hear your stories and what

Launch of state-of-the-art
facilities at new Grimwade Centre
for Cultural Materials Conservation
A gift of $6.9 million from the Cripps Foundation has enabled
the creation of the new Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials
Conservation.
New research and teaching labs – with
cutting edge analytical equipment to
detect the paints and pigments used by
artists and examine drawings underneath
paintings – will be housed in the new
centre. Associate Professor Robyn
Sloggett said the new state-of-the-art
facilities would benefit students, museums
and collections across Australia and the
Asia Pacific region.
“In order to train the next generation of
art and cultural conservators, we work
closely with museums, collectors and
communities to restore objects and items
where that are often tucked away in
collections,” said Assoc Prof Sloggett. “We
offer assistance when communities don’t
have the resources to protect and conserve
damaged items.
“The Centre has a very practical industry
focus and strong community connections,”
said Associate Professor Sloggett
“including a long term partnership with the
RSL LifeCare ANZAC Village in Narrabeen,
and with the Warmun community in
Western Australia where we have worked
with Elders to save over 600 significant
paintings and objects from the community
following the flood in 2011.”
Founded as an academic centre in
2003, the Centre for Cultural Materials
Conservation is Australia’s a leading
provider of cultural materials conservation
education, offering the Master of Cultural
Materials Conservation as well as a PhD
program.
Representatives from the University of
Melbourne will be attending every day
of the VCE and Careers Expo, so make
sure you bring your students down to
meet us.
The VCE and Careers Expo is Victoria’s
largest education and careers fair. The
University of Melbourne will be represented
by faculty and recruitment staff across the
four days of the event. We’ll be on hand
to answer any questions about courses,

New Brian Brown Recording

Studio launched at the VCA and National
Science Forum

2016
The new ‘Brian Brown Recording Studio’ was launched by
the Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley MP at the
University of Melbourne’s Southbank campus – home to the
Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne
Conservatorium of Music (VCA and MCM).
Funded by Creative Victoria, the upgraded
facility will allow for large-scale live
recordings incorporating high-end
technology and a range of new teaching,
research and community engagement
activities. With low-latency HD video
monitoring, the facility will also allow
musicians in a variety of spaces to record
and communicate with adjacent teaching
spaces and internationally via audio and
video link.
Director of the VCA and MCM, Professor
Su Baker, said the studio was named in
honour of the eminent Australian jazz
musician Brian Brown OAM (1933-2013),
who established the jazz and improvisation
course at the VCA in 1980.
