Freshwater Creek Steiner School Apr 22 Issue 10 FROM THE FACILITATOR Dear Parents and Community, It is a tall order to be a Steiner teacher;we are expected to be wise and good humoured beyond our years, not to mention skilled in all areas and having infinite patience. Steiner considered the role of education to be central to the task of social renewal and human evolution, placing enormous responsibility onto teachers for learning and self-development. Anthroposophy, the philosophical backdrop to the educational principles, is a limitless field that can open up great vistas to the earnest and dedicated;- it has a method of disciplined observation, humble and reverential inquiry into all aspects of culture. This Friday, all staff will participate in a professional development day to delve deeper into the art of teaching our curriculum, as well as to participate in artistic development for soul enrichment. We hope that your day with your children will be as fulfilling as our day of learning. to adjust to being with their friends in the morning and to build anticipation for the lessons at hand. Similarly, being on time to pick-up is essential; - endings being as important as beginnings. Children, even though collected by parents are still the responsibility of the teachers and the school while they are on school grounds; regarding the school’s “limits” to behaviour at pickup is essential. Please do not permit your children to tear around, play with balls particularly in crowded areas, wrestle or climb trees. The carpark area too, can be a dangerous place for children if they are not supervised. If your children play at the sandpit playground, please ensure that you are keeping an eye on them. Warmest regards for the ANZAC day commemoration. May it remind us that all we have is founded on the selfless sacrifices of so many. Warm Regards, Joseph This term, as a school, we are concentrating on working better with time and timetables; -punctuality. I would ask all parents to help us in this task by bringing their children to school by the commencing time for classes. It is better to be at least 10 minutes earlier to give children a chance 52 McIntyres Road, Freshwater Creek VIC 3216 – Ph (03) 5264 5077 – Fax (03) 5264 5066 2015 Upcoming Events to Diary Tue Apr 21 Class 4 Meeting Parent’s Choir TBA Fri Apr 24 Curriculum Day Music, classes 3-6 Thursdays (Please bring instruments) (No school) Mon Apr 27 Emergency Drill 12.40pm Tue Apr 28 Talk 11.45am-12.45pm Fri May 01 Chai Café (Class 5/6) Wed May 6 Class 3 Meeting 2:15pm Wetlands room School Council Meeting Mon May 18 Report Writing Day (No school) Thu May 21 Emergency Drill 2.15pm Sat 23/Sun 24 School Community Working Bee Fridays 9-9.30am All welcome Class 2 Meeting Wed Apr 29 Open Day 9.30-1pm Thu May 7 Assemblies (Wetlands room) Craft Circle Fridays 9.30-2.30 (Honey House) Teachers’ Meetings Tuesdays 3.30-5pm Wednesdays 8 - 8.30am Thursdays 3.30-4.30pm (please note that teachers are unavailable for parent discussions during these times) Working Bees 4hrs—Sat or Sun as advised May 23/24 Sept 5/6 Oct 10/11 Nov 28/29 Wed May 27 Annual General Meeting 6.30pm Wetlands Room Fri Jun 5 Chai Café (Class 2) Mon Jun 8 Queen’s Birthday Holiday Thur Jun 18 Winter Festival— EC Council Meeting Fri Jun 19 Winter Festival—Class 1-6 Last day of term (full day) Mon Jul 13 First day of Term 3 *These dates are subject to change at short notice. Later in Term 1 we moved into the epoch of Ancient Greecethe Year 5’s focusing on Myths and Legends and Botany- whilst the Year 6’s have been focusing on Greek history and the development of government in the various Greek city states. best ever created and many words and phrases have seeped into our daily expressions and vocabulary. As part of this series the students had to write their own Greek Myth, some of which can be found on our class website. (see below) Both year levels have been learning the Greek alphabet and how to write ancient Greek words using this script. Many of our weekly spelling lists have been based on English vocabulary with Greek roots. Year 6’s are made aware of the need to learn Greek letters for secondary Maths. The first important symbol they learn is Pi, pronounced ‘pea’ in Greek, but ‘pie’ Maths. They memorise that Pi is a relationship of the length of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Soon we will present a play based on the Greek god, Prometheus, and how the Greeks tried to come to terms with their growing confidence in Science and Technology; the use of fire in this tale is a metaphor for human enlightenment. The Greeks gave humanity a new perspective on the cosmos and developed the study of the natural world in more systematic and organised ways, developing the studies of Music, Architecture, Philosophy, Oratory, Literature, Theatre, Politics, Warfare, Government, Science and Technology. The Greeks learned to trust themselves as capable of making sense of the world and nature, and this is why Year 5 study Botany with the attitude of curious Greeks. However, the Greek myths are among the A “Calebopus” at Queenscliff As part of their Greek studies on botany we recently travelled to the Queenscliff Marine and Freshwater Study Centre and explored the various eco-systems found along our coast and water ways. The students were enthusiastic and it was pleasing to witness the excellent knowledge displayed by our students. Steiner kids certainly know their natural world, and I was proud of their contributions to the lessons and their excellent behaviour. My company sells unique Scandinavian rain wear. The rain wear is designed in Denmark and it is light weight, breathable and PVC free . It comes in a jacket and pants set. Pants come in bib n' brace or in a waist style. I grew up wearing these overalls at kindergarten in Sweden as they are the perfect protection for playing outside when it is wet or muddy. They also act as a windshield which prevents children from getting cold. See attached photos. I offer playgroups 55$/set (jacket and pants). They normally retail for $75/set. I offer also bib n brace pants for $35/pair. Kind Regards, Marie Kullenberg m: 0410 914 446 w: www.tinytrolls.com.au Holiday house for rent Holiday house for rent in Marengo (near Apollo Bay). An oldy but a goody... How many Steiner Teachers does it take to change a lightbulb? One to light the candle, one to say the verse, one to consider whether natural light would in fact be more beneficial to the child, one to consult Steiner's indications, one to change the light bulb, and one to lead the closing song. (and AT FWCSS, one to make the chai and one to bake the cake!) 52 McIntyres Road, Freshwater Creek VIC 3216 – Ph (03) 5264 5077 – Fax (03) 5264 5066 How we work with sensory education to develop heart thinking and the intelligence of feeling 52 McIntyres Road, Freshwater Creek VIC 3216 – Ph (03) 5264 5077 – Fax (03) 5264 5066 Warmly invites you to their Wednesday 27th May At 6.30pm In The Wetlands Room 52 McIntyres Rd Freshwater Creek All welcome! 52 McIntyres Road, Freshwater Creek VIC 3216 – Ph (03) 5264 5077 – Fax (03) 5264 5066
