Toys are a hot and fun way to play.
Taking care of your toys means they last
better longer and you reduce the risk of
Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs)
and bacterial infections. Here are some
easy steps you can take to look after your
toys and each other.
A different condom every time
Using penetrative sex toys, such as dildos, butt plugs, or vibrators, in your play can
be awesome. You can give it and take it so many ways. Using a different condom
helps protect your toys and prevents the spread of STIs.
So when switching your toy between orifices (yours or someone else’s)
switch your condom too.
Nylon: Nylon harnesses and toys can be machine or hand washed with
a mild anti-bacterial soap.
Leather: Wipe leather products with a damp, soapy cloth, with leather cleaner
or spray with Viraclean then wipe down. Do not soak leather. After cleaning, you may
recondition your toy using a leather conditioner or Dubbin, this gives the leather
a moleskin type resistance to liquids so they are more blood proof. Protect metal parts
from tarnish by applying a coating of clear nail polish.
Wood: You can clean woods such as bamboo with warm, soapy water and sterilise
using a cotton ball soaked in alcohol, antibacterial hand sanitiser
or Viraclean.
This includes anal play. Remember if you have used your sex toy in anal play,
use a new condom or ensure the toy has been cleaned properly before using
it anywhere else on you or your play mates. This helps stop spread the bacteria
that can cause infections.
Rope: Place the rope in an old pillowcase and wash in your washing machine
on gentle cycle using colour-safe bleach – wash different colours separately
as colours may bleed. Hang rope in loose coils to dry (can take a few days).
If it is hemp or jute rope re-oil with a small quantity of scent free baby oil or high
quality mineral oil and let dry for two more days before use.
What to use when cleaning toys
Toy Storage
You can use quite a few different products to clean and sanitise your toys.
For longer toy life you will need to consider your storage options:
Hot soapy water: Soap alone won’t remove STI bacteria or viruses from toys,
BUT if it’s the best you’ve got, it’s worked before and you already know how to use it!
Before storing your toy, make sure it is dry, clean and free of any lubricants.
Isopropyl alcohol: Alcohol is great for sanitising and can be found in most
supermarkets. Isocol is a well known brand that's usually easy to find. You could
even use alcohol swabs!
Chlorinated sanitiser: This is also known as baby bottle sanitiser, and is a great
and safe way to make sure your toys are sterile. Milton tablets, fluid and spray can
be found in chemists, supermarkets and baby wares stores. Make sure to read the
instructions on use.
Viraclean: This is a medical grade cleaner and steriliser that is fantastic for keeping
toys clean. It can be found at various online medical supply stores. It’s not expensive
and well worth the extra effort to locate. Note, if you don’t follow the instructions
exactly you may risk not fully sterilising your toys and thus transferring STIs.
Instructions on how to use Viraclean are provided in this brochure.
• Keep your toys in a cool, dry and dark place.
• Make sure none of your toys are touching skin to skin because some materials
have reactions when in contact with other toy material.
There are some anti-microbial bags on the market perfect for storing vibrators
and dildos.
• If applicable remove your batteries. It’s best to ‘lock‘ rechargeable vibrators.
This avoids accidental turn ons and potential corrosion.
• F loggers and whips are best kept hanging up to stop the tails from getting
tangled or kinked.
It’s recommended that stored ropes have all knots untied and be coiled
up; there is nothing worse than needing to untangle your ropes before
you play with them.
How to clean your insertables
Silicone: Hypo-allergenic and easiest to maintain, silicone dildos, plugs and
non-battery-operated toys may be boiled for two to three minutes, washed with soap
and water, put in the dishwasher on a sanitising cycle (never put dishwashing detergent
in for toys, just a water rinse) or sprayed down with Viraclean then rinsed.
Plastic/Acrylic/Glass/Metal: All can be washed with warm water and anti-bacterial
hand soap and sterilised using a cotton ball soaked in alcohol, antibacterial hand sanitiser,
Viraclean or baby bottle sterilising solution (rinse thoroughly afterward); Acrylic, glass and
metal toys may be boiled or submerged in hot water if they're not battery-operated.
Rubber/Latex/Jelly: These products are extremely porous, so be sure to wash them
thoroughly with warm water and anti-bacterial hand soap, or spray down with Viraclean
or baby bottle sanitising solution and then rinse so that no trace of residue is left,
as it can degrade the material and cause irritation to you. Again, while it's a good idea
to use a condom with any insertable toys, it's an especially good idea with toys made
of these materials.
Cyberskin/Vinyl: Thoroughly wash with warm (never hot) water and a liquid
antibacterial soap (or Viraclean) then let air dry completely. Once dry, sprinkle with
the included "renewing" powder or cornstarch. Never use talcum powder or baby
powder, as these can cause irritation and sometimes larger problems for women
(pure talc is fine but very difficult to find).
Vibrators: Since they have a motor you shouldn’t do any boiling or put them in the
dishwasher. Wipe them down with a damp, soapy cloth or spray with Viraclean then
wipe down. A lot of vibrators have cracks & crevices where different materials meet,
or where two parts of the toy meet or just because of the texture. These crevices,
ridges and similar spots require special attention when you are cleaning. Try using
an old, soft toothbrush.
Enema/Douche Equipment: Thoroughly wash the bag or bucket with hot water and
anti-bacterial soap or Viraclean. For the small bulbs fill with hot, soapy water, shake
then squeeze to empty; do this several times then rinse. After washing everything
needs to be soaked for at least half an hour in chlorinated water or hot water with
Viraclean, then thoroughly rinsed out and left to dry.
NEVER immerse any sex toy that has an electrical component in water
(electrical component means anything that vibrates or has batteries).
How to use Viraclean
What about non-insertable toys and equipment?
From clit ticklers to floggers and everything in between the list
of non-insertable toys and equipment is endlessly titillating!
In general the risk of STI transmission is slightly lower for these toys unless of course
your play involves blood. If you’re playing in blood sports, or if your flogging happens
to draw blood, then it’s important that you take extra precautions in your play.
For more info on blood sports ask Claude www.iloveclaude.com
Even if your play doesn’t involve blood, both bacterial and STIs can be transmitted
through sharing non-insertable toys, so it’s a good idea to clean your equipment
well between uses.
Remember you want to take care of your goodies, and cleaning your tools
properly means they will look better and last longer.
Viraclean is a great way to clean down all kinds of toys
and surfaces as it’s a medical grade disinfectant that kills
almost all bacteria and viruses.
To use:
Simply spray down the toy or surface
Leave for at least 10 minutes to allow for it to work
Then wipe down with paper towel or rinse off with warm water.
