Drum kit

Drum kit
This list may be used to select:
 A program of works for VCE Music Performance Units 3 & 4 Outcome 1 and endof-year performance examination where the student has selected to perform as a
soloist
 One work that will be used as the starting point for a Focus Area in VCE Music
Investigation where the student has selected to perform as a soloist. This work
must be performed in the Music Investigation end-of-year performance
examination.
2014 update
 New works are marked in green
 Some works have been deleted from the 2013 list
 Please note that for most works the editions listed are ‘recommended’ editions
rather than ‘required’ editions. Before using an alternative edition, students and
teacher should check that it is in fact an edition of the listed work; that is, it is not
a simplified version or an arrangement of the work. Changes form the listed
edition such as phrasing or dynamics are acceptable
 All works on this list are composed since 1910
 The Drumkit list is reviewed regularly. Suggestions of works for inclusion or
deletion should be sent to [email protected] with the subject
line ‘Attention Performing Arts Manager, Drumkit list’. For suggestions of works to
be included on the list please
- Provide a copy of the sheet music, publication details and, as
appropriate, a description of the lines/parts to be performed
- Indicate which category the work should be listed in
- Briefly describe why the work should be included on the list
Study Design Requirements
Music Investigation
Compliance requirements
For students who select to perform the end-of-year performance examination as a
soloist, the Focus Area selected for Unit 3 Outcome 1 must be based on, and the
examination program must include, one work selected from either the Prescribed list
of notated solo works for the instrument selected or Section A of the Prescribed list of
group works.
Other information
This list must be used in conjunction with information provided in the:
 Introduction to the VCE Music Prescribed list of notated solo works
 VCE Music Study Design, Music Investigation Units 3 and 4
- selection of instrument and program
- Unit 3 Outcome 1 and Outcome 3
- Unit 4 Outcome 3
- end-of-year performance examination, description and conditions for
students who have selected to perform as a soloist
 Music Investigation examination criteria and sample examination material.
Music Performance
Compliance requirements
For students who select to perform as a soloist for Units 3 and 4 and select Drum Kit
as their instrument, all solo works performed for Units 3 and 4 Outcome 1 and all
works performed in the end-of-year performance examination must be selected from
this list or be approved as alternative works
The program for the end-of-year Solo performance recital examination for Drum kit
must consist of at least six works. The program must include at least one work from
each of the following four categories:

Snare drum

Drum kit – solos

Drum kit – chart reading

Using Brushes in Jazz style
The fifth and sixth works in the program may be selected from any category. All Drum
kit works on this list are composed post 1910.
Each title listed constitutes one work. Where a work comprises several movements,
more than one movement may be performed unless otherwise specified. These
movements together will count as one work.
The durations and metronome indications are only a guide to performance. All
durations include the performance of the repeat sections. The expression ‘duration
2:00 crotchet 132’ means that, played at a tempo of 132 crotchet beats per minute,
the work should take about two minutes to perform. Most works on the list should be
performed exactly as notated. Other works, particularly in the Drum kit – solos and
Drum kit – Chart reading categories, should be performed with embellishments.
These embellishments are usually not indicated on the notated work but their
inclusion would demonstrate an understanding of the styles represented by the work.
Other information
This list must be used in conjunction with information provided in the:
 Introduction to the VCE Music Prescribed list of notated solo works
 VCE Music Study Design, Music Performance Units 3 and 4
- selection of instrument and program
- Unit 3 Outcome 1
- Unit 4 Outcome 1
- end-of-year performance examination, description and conditions for
students who have selected to perform as a soloist
 Music Performance examination criteria and sample examination material.
Instruments
It is recommended that students bring to the examination their own drum kit including
sticks, cymbals and stool, a portable playback sound system including leads and
recordings on one media, for example CD or MD, in performance order. This ensures
that individual equipment preferences are met. 25 minutes is allowed to set up the
equipment for performance. A basic drum kit with cymbals and stool will be available
at the examination venue – details available from VCAA when notices re-examination
date and venue are issued.
Accompaniments
Accompaniment may be provided live by a single person playing a single instrument
such as bass, piano, electronic keyboard or guitar. Some works may be performed
with pre-recorded accompaniment. These works are identified in the list. Other works
are published with CD, tape backing, or notated accompaniment which must be
used. Students should not play an accompanied work without accompaniment. The
accompaniment must not include a drum kit track.
Improvisation
Some Drum kit works include an unstructured section for an improvised solo. In
performance, students will be expected to perform the unstructured sections in an
appropriate style within the style of the work as a whole. The assessment will be
based on performance skills not the nature of the musical ideas arising within the
improvised sections. The improvised material should embellish the performance of
the work rather than demonstrate an open-ended concept of improvisation.
