GSGA HIGHLIGHTS A Publication of the Gator Senior Golf Association VOLUME 23, ISSUE 9 June, 2015 www.gatorseniorgolf.com GSGA, Inc. 5745 SW 75th St., #302 Gainesville, FL 32608 BOARD MEMBERS NEXT TOURNAMENT President Paul Metivier 352-234-9645 VP/Site Coordinator Monday, July 20, 2015 Ken Walters 352-332-1479 ***8:30 AM Shotgun Start*** Tournament Director Gil Baxter 352-332-3694 Please plan your trip so you can check in with the Treasurer Tournament Director at least 15 minutes prior Don McIntyre 352-332-6403 to start time. Secretary Leon Banks 352-331-7261 Pine Oaks of Ocala, from what I can Dir J ohn McGr iff 352-538-5591 determine, was once called Ocala Municipal Dir Lin Cantr ell 352-505-3693 GC. It is a par 72, with back tees playing 6533 Dir Bill Str awn 352-359-0300 Pine Oaks of Ocala GC yards. Middle tees play to 5972 yards. Forward tees play 5460 yards. There are a lot of trees (probably pines and oaks) that line some of the fairways but it is pretty open with some water holes. The fairways are flat and sloping but not hilly like Twisted Oaks. It will be challenging but not tortuous and I think it will be a great test for the Gator Seniors to show their golfing skills. See ya there! Questions concerning GSGA? Please contact Gil Baxter or any Board Member with any suggestions or questions pertaining to GSGA procedures. Twisted Oaks Golf Tournament “Inclement Weather” The last time the Gator Seniors played this course was September of 2009. It was not a rememberable course to me at that time. It sure is a course to remember now as it seemed different and challenging and wide open. Rolling hills made level lies almost non-existent. Distances to the pins were hard to determine by sight and even made you doubt your range finder if you were able to use one. The contoured greens were a challenge for your putting skills and I don’t think there was a level putt on any of the greens. The weather was very hot but an occasional breeze made it at least tolerable. There was not a lot of shade to be found either. We had a field of 56 players, a little less than we usually have. We were still doubled up on the back nine which made play a little slower than I like. The food was good and there was plenty of iced tea to quench your thirst. If you didn’t play today, I think that you would have enjoyed playing this course. Check with some of the members that played to see what they thought of the course. Tom Lyman and his staff did an excellent job of getting us started and the hamburgers with all the trimmings for lunch was well done (no pun intended). I would appreciate any feedback from you on your thoughts on playing Twisted Oaks. It was a little further to travel but did you feel it was worth the effort to get there? All in all it was a good Gator Senior outing. Greens and Fairways! On a tournament Morning when there is a threat of bad weather, please call the Pro Shop at the course we’re playing to get the tournament status. The number to call is shown on the second page of the newsletter. You may have to decide whether to play or not, and you can let the staff at the site know what you plan to do. Do not call the Tournament Director as he will be traveling to the site and will not be home. Your info will be relayed to the Tournament Director by the club staff.
