Nepal What is Nepal? Nepal, whose full name is the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a small country between China and India. The first people to settle in Nepal lived there over 2500 years ago, and it is home to more than 30 million people today. Geography Nepal is a small county only a little bigger than the state of Arkansas. This country has the tallest mountain in the world called Mount Everest. People & Culture The people of Nepal practice two major religions: Hinduism and Buddhism. Most people practice the Hindu religion and can speak both Nepali and English. There are a special group of people who are born and live in the mountains called Sherpas. They often help outsiders climb the mountains of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest. Facts about Nepal: The Capital of Nepal is Kathmandu. Buddha was born in Nepal. Until 2008, Nepal had a King and a Queen. Now they are a democracy and vote for a President. Natural Disasters On April 25, 2015, an earthquake struck Nepal near its capital, Kathmandu. The earthquake killed more than 5,000 people and injured tens of thousands more. This earthquake caused the famous Mount Everest to have an avalanche which injured and trapped climbers on the mountain. As many as 2 million children have been affected by the earthquake.
