October 2012 Canadian Propane Cylinder Disposal Resources Propane cylinders should never be thrown in household garbage or recycling containers for roadside pick-up! British Columbia Propane cylinders are accepted at most landfills and transfer stations for recycling. You can find a list of locations by visiting the Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) website: www.rcbc.bc.ca/. Alberta Over 100 “Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up” events are held annually across Alberta, and many accept propane tanks. To find out when a Round-up is scheduled in your area visit Alberta Recycling’s website. Saskatchewan The Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council provides a recycling database with a list of organizations in your community that will recycle or reuse various materials. www.saskwastereduction.ca/db/, as well as information on Household Hazardous Waste recycling days: www.saskwastereduction.ca/resources/hazwaste/HHW-days.html Manitoba Miller Environmental Corporation is responsible for collection and disposal of household hazardous waste. Propane cylinders can be dropped off at the facility in Winnipeg, or at one of the collection events throughout Manitoba. Ontario The Orange Drop program has been introduced to help recycle household hazardous and special waste materials that need extra care when they’ve reached the end of their useful lives. You can find a list of locations here: www.makethedrop.ca/. Québec Municipalities and regional county municipalities (RCMs) are responsible for waste management within their jurisdictions. Some hold occasional household hazardous waste collections, while others can do direct drop-offs to an Éco-centre. For collection/drop-off locations near you, contact Recyc-Quebec: www. recyc-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/client/fr/accueil.asp. Nova Scotia Local municipal solid waste organizations have established Household hazardous waste drop-off locations throughout the province. Find the nearest location at www.reduceyourwaste.ca. New Brunswick Household hazardous waste is handled by regional solid waste management facilities. To find the facility in your region, visit the Recycle NB website: www.recyclenb.com/en/recycling/. Prince Edward Island Residents may take household hazardous waste to a Waste Watch Drop-Off Centre (WWDC) at no charge. The facility locations and hours of operation can be found on the Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) website: www.iwmc.pe.ca/disposalfacilities.php. The Multi Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) manages the disposal and recycling of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). HHW can be disposed of through MMSB-Sponsored HHW Collection Events, Newfoundland & which take place in participating communities throughout the province from spring to fall each year, or disposed at permanent HHW Depots throughout the province, by area residents.
