Gig Harbor Welcome Club Newsletter May - June 2015 “The Gig Harbor Welcome Club is organized exclusively for social, educational, and charitable purposes. It shall be non-partisan, non-sectarian, and sponsors no legislative activities.” Volume 35, Issue 6 Co-Presidents’ Corner with Mary Marques and Jerry Smith: Our year is rapidly drawing to a close, and we look back on a year of shared joys and sorrows, interesting programs at meetings, travel and group activities, socializing with old friends and new, generously giving to local charities, and offering serious competition to New Neighbors Club at the 2nd annual Bocce Ball Tournament! Enormous thanks to Nancy Christopher, June Benoit, and Harris Atkins, our Nominating Committee, whose thorough and "extended" search produced our officers for next year. So, congratulations to: Eddie Clark, president-elect, Joann Hale, vice-president-elect, Mary Bennett, secretary-elect, Darrell Anderson, treasurer-elect; and our outgoing (and many returning) officers and committee chairs: 1. Alice Anderson 7. Mark Meissner 2. Darrell Anderson 8. Marcia Nolan 3. Arlene Babbitt 9. Sharon Panchot 4. Karen Evans 10. Lois Reed 5. Karen Goyette 11. Carol Stokes 6. Gunda Meissner We are so very grateful and appreciative of your leadership and dedicated service to our club! Your Board for 2015-2016 is an outstanding group of people whose diverse and impressive talents and experience will serve us well. We are proud to introduce -"My name is Edale Clark, but I like to be called Eddie. I retired in June, 2009, from the Federal Aviation Administration with a total of 37 years of service. I was hired as an air traffic controller and advanced my career into the management field holding the following positions: Plans & Program Specialist, Supervisor, and Manager. My career gave me the opportunity to live in the following states: California, Arizona, Washington, and Alaska. Throughout my life, I have given back to the community by being involved in a variety of organizations. Some were work related but most were in the communities where I lived. I have had the opportunity to serve on many different boards and in many positions, in organizations such as: Queen Creek Boys and Girls Club, San Tan Chamber of Commerce, San Tan Heights Homeowners Association, Lion Clubs, Court Appointed Special Advocate, and Central Peninsula Hospital Board. I have owned my own home cleaning business in Alaska and I'm currently developing a business which offers house/pet sitting, organization skills, and office work." "My name is Joann Hale. Len and I joined the Welcome Club in 2011, shortly after moving to Washington from California. In Cambria, CA, we both were active in their Newcomers Club for over 5 years. I served on their board as Vice President. In Gig Harbor, we joined the Cocktailers and Let's Do Dinner groups. Len belongs to the Hiking and Sailing groups and I lead Book Club 3 and Ladies Summer Golf. This will be my 4th year on the board having been Publicity Chair, Membership Chair, and this will be my 2nd year as vice President/Programming." "Hi, I'm Mary Bennett. We moved to GH from Nebraska 27 years ago, with 3 boys in tow. We settled in, new job for hubby and me making sure my boys were ok. We'd never moved before so I drove the kids crazy, especially my son who was a senior. He survived! I started working as a registered nurse after 2 years, full time in long term care. This was a new venture for me also, but it has worked out well for me since that time. I retired 3 years ago, but still pick up some "on call" hours several days a month. I have the advantage of saying "no thank you" when I have other fun things going on. My career has been a blessing through the years and especially since my husband, Roger, passed away 12 years ago. I was able to work at a job I have loved and have the ability to maintain my life. My 3 sons all live in WA for which I am very thankful, and they take very good care of their Mom. I have 2 grown grandsons in Arkansas and a precious 1 year old great granddaughter. I have 5 younger grandchildren in WA March – April 2015 Newsletter www.gigharborwelcomeclub.com Page 1 and enjoy being able to attend some of their activities from school and the special events of the year. I babysit 2 of my grandkids every other week before and after school and love having them come and hearing about their day. I enjoy my family, many friends, gardening, yard work, and travel both near and far." Darrell Anderson - "I grew up on a farm in northeastern Montana (my grandfather owned the northeast corner of the state). I earned a business degree from the University of Montana in 1965, and have 50+ years of accounting experience in various corporate and tax positions. I sold a business in Chicago and moved to West Seattle in 1998. I met Alice on Match.com and we were married in 2005. Alice and I have traveled in five continents, and we're hoping to pick up six and seven soon. I'm partially retired but I still enjoy my hobby - accounting." Wow! An impressive group, wouldn't you agree? Installation of officers will take place at the May general meeting - you won't want to miss it! Finally, please take note of upcoming events - our May 6th general meeting at Harbor Place, the June 3rd appreciation luncheon for outgoing/incoming Board members and Activity Group Coordinators at Anthony's, and our annual picnic on July 10th at Crescent Creek Park. See Joann Hale's message for all the details and fill out the reservation forms at the end of the newsletter. Above all, don't forget to send in your annual membership renewal form and check by July 1st! You can find that form at the end of the newsletter as well. With thanks for the memories, and in anticipation of upcoming events, we look forward to seeing you soon and appreciate the opportunity to serve you and our Gig Harbor Welcome Club. Mary and Jerry Jerry and Mary Vice President/Program Chairperson – Joann Hale Special thanks to everyone for the successful Arts and Crafts and Group Leader Presentations at our April 1 st General Meeting. The Grand Prize winner for group participation went to the Travel Group. They received a home-baked lemon bundt cake which was delivered to their April meeting. Our May 6th General Meeting (the last General Meeting of the club year) will be at Harbor Place and will feature Peninsula Gateway’s Don Snowden, their political cartoonist. We’ll also have an update as to what’s happening at the Harbor History Museum by John Ross, the museum’s director. Don’t forget to RSVP to the Annual Club Family Picnic on Friday, July 10th at Crescent Creek Park from noon to 5PM. If you’d like to be on the Picnic committee please call or email me and see the back of this newsletter for the May General Club Meeting and Family Picnic reservations. General Meetings Wednesday May 6th Harbor Place at Cottesmore Friday July 10 Don Snowden, cartoonist from the Peninsula Gateway will be our featured speaker. In 1979 there were rumblings in Gig Harbor that corporate giant McDonald’s was on the way in, and some worried the business would destroy the quaint maritime feel of the town. Key Peninsula resident Don Snowden kind of wanted an Egg McMuffin. With everything going on, Snowden thought about writing a letter to the editor, but then he had a better — and perhaps more impactful — idea: Submit a cartoon to The Gateway. Now there are several McDonald’s locally, and in a similar battle, the town stonewalled Wal-Mart. There’s even a second Narrows Bridge. And Snowden is still drawing for The Gateway. In an era of the ever-changing newspaper business, Snowden has been a constant voice on the editorial page of The Gateway with his cartoons. Lunch will be a “chef’s surprise” buffet and will be $15. Please use the reservation form on the back of the newsletter to RSVP. Discussion topics will be sent out by reminder email about a week before the meeting.
