Code of Behaviour
Thank you to Ms. Appelbe who has led the review and revision of our new Code of Behaviour.
Following consultation with pupils, parents and staff and ratification by the Board of
Management the new Code of Behaviour is being implemented. Please find the Code in our

Choir
The Choir will sing at the family service in St. Paul’s Church, Glenageary @ 10.30 a.m. on
Sunday, 19th April 2015.
Sponsored Walk
A huge thank you to Ray Egan who organised and secured sponsorship in advance of our walk.
Thank you also to Sarah O’Reilly, Heather MacNulty, Julie McConnell, Joanna Jackson and
Sue Percival for their trojan work. Thank you to Penny and Phoebe for leading the walk.
Thank you to all the parents and pupils who participated in the walk and to all our sponsors.
We are thrilled that €6,932.50 was raised.
Our Big Walk
On the 20th March everyone in the school went on a big sponsored walk to raise money for
the school. It was great. We all had a big dancing show. All of the teachers were given
balloons and Ms. Appelbe’s balloon blew away. It was really funny! After the dancing we all
went in pairs up the footpath to Killiney Hill. We walked and walked up and down the hill.
When we got to the coffee shop we walked back to school. When we got back to school
there were freddo bars and drinks on our tables. As we went home we ate the snacks. IT
WAS GREAT!
Emily Jane McDonnell 4th Class
On 20th March the entire school of G.K.N.S. went on a sponsored walk. We walked around
Killiney Hill from the school gates. Lots of parents came and it was quite fun. We walked up
to the obelisk and back down. After that we walked over the other side of the hill and we
came back to school. It was very fun with all the grownups and even my Mum came! The
walk was very fun with the whole school and I really liked it.

“We went on a sponsored walk over Killiney Hill. We raised money for our school. It was a 3
k.m. walk over Killiney Hill. We started to walk from the school and we walked through the
Wyvern Estate. We went through the gates to Killiney Hill. We walked up over Killiney Hill
past the Witches hat and then past the forest.” Abbie Doyle
“On the 20th of March we did a sponsored walk. We all raised loads of money for the
sponsored walk. In fact, we raised over six thousand euro for our school. On the walk we went
to Killiney Hill and our Pet Mascot Phoebe the dog was at the front and she led the way.
While we were walking we met loads of dogs. The walk was super easy! Emily Hall

state and walked past the houses. Then we crossed the road and went up the path. We walked
through the forest and we got to the top of the hill. The view was amazing. We walked down

“After our Céilí dances we went on a sponsored walk. Lots of parents came with us. When we
arrived at Killiney Hill we walked on the path that led to the Obelisk. Then we walked down
past the pyramid and walked all around. When we came back every pupil got chocolate bars

“For the fundraising committee, on the 20th of March the entire school (and some parents
too!) embarked on a walk. Roughly two weeks before the walk each student was issued a
sheet. On the sheet they would collect signatures from their sponsors. They would also
collect sponsorship money from above. The trek started after big break at our school. We
walked up the estate and through the passage way that would bring us to the road beside
Victoria Park (Killiney Hill). The school stopped by the coffee shop before taking the right
path to the Obelisk. At the obelisk, we came to the triple fork and took the middle. We went
down the many steps and by that point I was walking right by the school mascot at the head
of the procession, Phoebe the dog. Some steps later we arrived at the road we’d have to
cross to get to the playground.” Levi Smith

Please ensure your child’s hair is tied up/back every day in an effort to eliminate the chances
of contracting head lice which appears to be prevalent at the moment. Pupils in 4th, 5th & 6th
classes should take responsibility for ensuring their hair is tied up/ back at all times.
Milanos 4th class
On Wednesday 11th March, 4th Class went to Milanos. As soon as we got there, we sat down
and we were given some toppings like basil, black olives and peppers to taste. Then we got
chefs hats and aprons to wear. We were given dough which we flattened and made into pizza
shapes.
After spreading tomato sauce and cheese on top, we got toppings.
I chose
pepperoni and ham. After it was cooked, we took our pizzas to eat in the Shackleton
Experience.
Mark Speer 4th Class
On the 11th March 2015, 4th class went on a trip to Milanos. They took the DART to Dun
Laoghaire and walked to the restaurant. When we waked in we were greeted very nicely by
Sally (a Manager). She told us to put our bags in the corner and sit down. When we sat
down they were given four bowls and in them were olives, tomatoes, peppers and basil. These
are traditional pizza toppings. We were given some dough, cheese, tomato sauce, ham and
pepperoni and we made our pizzas. The pizzas were boxed and 4th class took them to the
Shackleton Endurance Exhibition where we had lots of fun too.
Zoe O’Meara 4th Class
Explorers Programme
Fifth and Third Class were invited down to the hall on the 24 th March to receive
certificates of participation from Pat Seaver from the Blackrock Education centre
and Pat O'Suilleabhain from Sea Life in Bray. Grace and Kayleigh from 5 th Class and
James from 3rd Class stood up and spoke about the exciting trip to visit Sea Life in
Bray and also about having the aquarium in our classroom. The children were
congratulated for their hard work in taking care of the sea creatures and encouraged
to continue to champion the cause of Ireland’s marine life and oceans in the future.
The Shackleton Exhibition
Fourth Class went to the Shackleton Exhibition. First, Donal set up a movie for us to watch
about Shackleton and his men. It was really interesting, every single man survived. After
the extremely interesting movie Donal gave us a quiz to complete as we walked around the
exhibition. There were pictures of the men everywhere. I had a go with the sextant (a
sextant is a thing that they used to navigate with, you line it up with the sun and it shows you
the way and gives you your bearings. Then Donal gave us the answers to the quiz and told us
about all the men and their jobs on the ships. It was really really interesting.
Martha Duignan 4th Class
Seachtain na Gaeilge
Last week we played Hurling. I loved smashing the sliotar with my hurl. Then we danced in
front of the whole school. It was an Irish dance. Sixth class taught us actions and we loved
doing them in assembly. It was a cool dance. We made St. Patrick’s Day hats and we even
had Monday and Tuesday off. On Friday we went up Killiney Hill to make money for the
school.
Andrew Lowey & Drew Donnelly 1st Class
For Seachtain na Gaeilge 6th class made up a dance for the instrumental part of ‘Wake Me Up
as Gaeilge’. Half the class did the first instrumental while the others did the second
instrumental. Each day 6th class went to the other classes to teach them the dance. On
Thursday 6th class played Irish games with the junior classes. On Friday, 4th, 5th and 6th did
an Irish quiz. All of the questions were in Irish. Later that day we had a céilí and then went
on the sponsored walk.
Anna Hoffman 6th Class
“It was a short week when Seachtain na Gaeilge was on. We only really got into it on the
Friday. We started off with a quiz. It was very hard but fun as well. We did the rounds until
the break. Ms. Honner came into the hall with two professional hockey players called Chloe
and Gillian. We asked them questions and they answered them. Apparently they won the
school hockey cup in 4th, 5th and 6th class! After the break, the quiz continued.
The Quiz got easier and our team was hoping for 3rd place. Unfortunately we failed to reach
that spot but we still did alright. After big break we did a Ceilí. Our class did the “Walls of
Limerick” with 6th class and the younger classes did “skip to my Lou” and “Shoe the Donkey”.
Seachtain na Gaeilge wasn’t a very long week but it was still as fun as all the other weeks.”
Shane Mac Nulty 5th Class
Spikeball
For the past six weeks we have been playing spikeball with transition year students from
Loreto Foxrock. Spikeball is quite similar to volleyball, but spikeball has more rules than
volleyball. First of all, the aim of the game is to win the point. First you serve, then return
the serve, then catch the ball and set up your team mate for a spike. The coaches were all
very nice and we had good fun.

Pavilion 6th class
On Wednesday 18th March 6th class went to the Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire. We got the DART
from Dalkey to Dun Laoghaire and then walked to the Pavilion. Once in the Pavilion we went
to a show called ‘The History Detectives’. The three authors involved were Marita ConlonMcKenna, Brian Gallagher and Nicola Pierce. I found it very interesting to hear how they
were inspired to write their books. After that we went to Scrumdiddly’s and got ice-cream.
Once we all had our ice-cream we walked to The People’s Park and played in the playground.
We then got the DART back to Dalkey. We all had a great time and really enjoyed the day.

The Irish Ladies Hockey Team
On Friday, 19th March two girls came to school. Their names were Chloe Watkins and Gillian
Pinder. They play for the Irish Ladies Hockey Team. They both went to school here. Some
of us had questions for them. Some of the questions that I remember are – what type of
hockey stick do you use? Chloe uses Osaka and Gillian is sponsored by Adidas so she uses
that. Then we all went outside to take a picture with them. We all were so excited. They
were both so nice and lovely. Thank you to the Irish Ladies Hockey team from all in G.K.N.S.
Sarah Bradley 4th Class
We were delighted to hear that the Irish Ladies Hockey Team won their match against
Portugal on Sunday 22nd March and we wish them the best of luck in their next match and
possible qualification for the Olympics in Rio in 2016.
Thank you to Carol Mechette for organising the visit of past pupils, Chloe Watkins and Gillian
Pinder to G.K.N.S. We were thrilled to welcome them back. We really appreciate them giving
of their time to answer lots of questions. They are fantastic role models for the current
hockey players in G.K.N.S.
Write a Book 2015
Well done to all our young authors who took part in Write-a-Book 2015. Congratulations to
the Merit Award Winners and to the pupils whose books were Highly Commended. There will
be an Awards Ceremony in Fitzpatrick’s Castle Hotel, Killiney on Monday 27th April where the

Literacy Update – Ms. C. Richardson
This term all classes have been focusing on instructional writing.
When writing instructions there are a number of steps that we follow:
-A clear title
-A list of ingredients, materials or equipment needed
-The stages / method that will be followed.
We know that instructions need to be sequenced correctly; we write in short, clear sentences
and that imperative (bossy) verbs are used.
Have a look at some writing samples from all classes on the writing notice board beside Ms.
Darling's room.

individual and class photographs. Permission Slips will be distributed on Monday, 13th April to
each pupil.

New from the Parents’ Association
Hockey News
This year GKNS entered one team into the Leinster Schoolboys Hockey League. The team was
made up of nine 6th class boys and three 5th class boys including Tom Varian, Naoise Cautley, Sam
Mitchell, Samuel Byrne, Arthur Hoade, Eric Kendrick, Michael Finney, Dylan Murray, Robbie
Bowers, Josh O'Neill, Sean Foulds and Freddy Jones. The team were very lucky to have Andrew
Gaw as their coach and I know that they appreciated all his hard work at their Monday evening
training sessions and at their matches.
We played six league matches and four friendlies in total this season. It started off with a friendly
against Kill of the Grange, under horrendous weather conditions. Unfortunately even our best
efforts couldn't stop the opposition! Due to the conditions we asked KoG back for another friendly,
under better weather but still a very tough match, a loss but still good experience for our team.
The first league game was against the formidable Rathmichael NS, extremely tough opposition but
the boys learnt a lot from the match and put the learning to good use and from there on the team
worked well together and began to play good flowing hockey. This all culminated in a great win at
the next match in a friendly against St Andrew's College.
Delgany NS was our second league opponent. It was a very tense and exciting game with some
great skill being shown individually and as a team. It ended in a draw just before full time.
St Patricks Greystones were up next. They were a strong team and had the upper hand most of the
game but we played well.
The next league game was against our local rivals St Patricks Dalkey and we had the upper hand
during most of the match and the team excelled to a clear victory.
Monkstown Educate Together stepped into the breach when Guardian Angels left the league, so a
friendly was played instead with GKNS playing some skilful hockey and securing a great win.
With two league matches to go the pressure was on for good results…..Next was Our Lady's Grove,
two closely matched teams meant for another tense game which was both close and exciting.
Thankfully we came out on top by full-time!
Finally it was Dalkey School Project. All the training and match practice came together for our
final league match of the season and what a match it was. It was the best match as far as team play
and excitement goes!! They were level at half time, then DSP scored two agonising goals at the
start of the second half but not to be daunted GKNS fought back, tooth and nail, to draw by the
final whistle! Nail biting stuff!
As the hockey season draws to a close I want to say a huge thank you to the parents for the lifts,
time and support they have given the team, to Nikki Dixon (PA) for her support and help with first
aid kit/goalie gear/tops etc, to Andrew Gaw for his time and patience, to Mrs Honor and the
teachers for letting the team out early for matches and to the team themselves who learnt so much
from their match play and really played their best and gave their all to the game and the team.
GKNS should be very proud to come 3rd in the Leinster Schoolboys League. A great hockey
season....WELL DONE!!

News from the Fundraising Committee
Friday 20th March was a fantastic day. A heartfelt thank you to all the pupils, families and staff at GKNS who collected sponsorship,
participated in the walk and supervised along the way. We were accompanied by Phoebe the school mascot and supported by an
army of Hi Vis vest wearing Mums, Dads, Grannies and au pairs. What a turn out!
All in all it was a very successful event and we raised an amazing €6932.50 for the school, an absolutely superb result.
A special thanks to Ray Egan. Ray spent a lot of time organising the sponsors including the refreshments and printing.
Everybody involved played a very important part in making the event such a success. Thank you once again.

From the Rector
I want to thank in advance all those who are making preparations for the Parish Fete.
Whether organising rotas, selling or buying tickets, helping out on stands, or quietly
supporting one another in the background, it is greatly appreciated. Everyone will
have an opportunity to support this community and family event in the grounds on
Glenageary-Killiney National School, Wyvern Estate on Saturday May 16th from 11am –
3pm. If you are free on the day, join us a day filled with fun, laughter and
excitement. The theme this year is ‘Pirates and Princesses’ – appropriate dress is
encouraged!
The Trinity Tester
In the run-up to the Parish Fete, the Rector has drawn up the ‘Trinity Tester’, answer
18 questions correctly and be in with a chance to win A Midweek VIP Experience for
two people at the Wineport Lodge Hotel, Glasson, Co. Westmeath (One night in a
Deluxe Room, followed by a lazy breakfast in bed. Includes some chocolate dipped
strawberries & a half bottle of bubbly in you room on arrival!). Cost of test sheet €2
and all proceeds go towards parish funds. Have a go … in the imitable words of Mrs
Doyle, ah go on, go on, go on!

Killiney Keep Fit Class
Sadly all good things come to an end and the Killiney Keep Fit group which was started
by Babs Smythe over 40 years ago may have run its course
BUT it could be
regenerated if here was enough new interest within the community. The Keep fit has
always been a group drawn from the neighbourhood and across the community and was
run on a voluntary basis so that over the years it has been able to support many
charities to the tune of over 50,000 Euros. The Hospice, Drug squad, Laura Lynne
and many, many others have benefited, besides funding various Church repairs, and
helping local people in need. This is a proud record for the ladies a well as the
benefits of improved health and fitness! When Babs retired she handed over to a
group whom she had trained up to run the class, Imelda Greaney, Aine Marr who has
sadly passed on, Rosaleen Corbet who has retired, and Jasone O'Carroll. Imelda has
been keeping the books since 1997 and organising things together with Jasone and
they are willing to continue if there is enough interest. Mondays at 10.00am & the
cost is 20 Euros for 8 weeks - 75minute work out which can be taken at you own pace.

Sheep Thrills - Made in Ireland
Every Thursday at 11am in the Carry Centre.
Our community based textile group continues with great enthusiasm and with lots of
new ideas already put into operation. Sheep Thrills products will be sold locally and
given to selected charities for the homeless both at home and abroad. So anyone

The Y Club (Killiney Men’s Society)
Saturday April 25th – Day trip to Howth. All Gentleman are very to attend. More

Table Tennis
The table tennis club meets every Monday at 8pm in the Carry Centre. If you are
interested in trying out table tennis, you would be very welcome (and we will even lend

World Day of Prayer
This years’ service was held on Friday 6th March. We thank all those involved in the
preparation for the event, in particular Ishbel Lee who co-ordinated things for Holy
Trinity.
The Obelisk
The March/April edition is now available. The deadline for submissions to the next
edition is the 15th April.
Hospital Visiting
The Rector would appreciate being told if parishioners are in hospital, going into
hospital, are being transferred or if they have been discharged, and will be pleased to
offer pastoral support. A selection of prayers is available from him or in the Church
porches.
