It's hard to believe that we are already into April. Our
Thursday's weather have not been nice to us, but the bunch
of ladies that participate each week should be congratulated.
Hopefully mother nature has some good weather in store for
us. Our 2015 board has been working very hard to increase
play with lots of different games. I would like to encourage
all to come out and give it a try, you might like it. Quote for
the month “Golf is like fishing and hunting. What counts is
the companionship and fellowship of friends, not what you
catch or shoot.” ~ George Archer

GLLGA Member/Guest – Divas & Divots
What a tournament the Member/Guest was this year! The
Member/Guest committee, under the direction of Raye
Wentworth, should be congratulated for a fantastic
tournament. Forty-two teams weathered some of the harshest
conditions of the year. Wednesday's practice round was a bit
cold and blustery. Thursday's opening round of play was
extremely windy, cold, and challenging. However, all 42
teams stuck it out and should be congratulated for their
stamina and perseverance! Friday turned out bright and
sunny and gave all the competitors an opportunity to better
their scores from the day before. And better them, they did.
There were quite a few “match of cards” to determine
winners in all of the flights.
The food at the party on Wednesday night consisted of
serving stations with a wide variety of food options. Chef
Mik surprised us with “soup at the turn” to warm us up on
Thursday and Friday. Thank you is all most of the
competitors could say. It was a welcome gesture. Friday
night's banquet was spectacular from the appetizer bar, to the
soup and salad, to the choice of entrée items, to the bananas
foster and crepe suzettes and lemoncello. What a meal! And
on the tables were “hand-made” greens which the decoration
committee made.
The Overall Low Gross winners were Nina Bryant and Sue
Burton with a score of 74. The Overall Low Net winners were
Kay Broyles and Mary Duval with a 56 (MOC).

In the late 1950's, Pete Seeger wrote and recorded “To Everything There is a Season” – paraphrasing
Chapter 3 of the Book of Ecclesiastes….”a time to build up, a time to break down, a time to plant, a time to
reap, a time to laugh, a time to weep”.
After ten wonderful years at Glen Lakes as the Food and Beverage manager, this is my time to reap – the
rewards of retirement. It is also a time to laugh and weep – remembering the hilarious events but missing
the constant friendships. My last day will be the end of June just after hip surgery.
My replacement will not disappoint. Merideth Rosetti has been a Food and Beverage manager for over 20
years including 8 years at Black Diamond. The ethnic succession is purely coincidental. When she arrives,
please welcome her as you have warmly welcomed me.
And so the torch is soon to be passed. No, I did not win the lottery, and I am not moving to Key West.

Hello, GlenLakes Members! My name is Merideth Rossetti, and I am originally from Worcester,
Massachusetts where I have worked for The College of the Holy Cross and also taught for the Worcester
public school system teaching restaurant management. I moved to Spring Hill, Florida in 2005 and
accepted a job working for Black Diamond Ranch as Food and Beverage Director for eight years. I have a
daughter named Brooke, who is ten years old. She attends Chocachatti Elementary and she loves to
dance! I am very excited to become a part of the GlenLakes family, and I look forward to meeting each
and every one of you.

The Rules Of Play – Judy Voiers, Rules Chair
Determining “nearest Point Of Relief”
One of the most misused, misunderstood definitions is
related to the correct procedure for determining “nearest
point of relief” when taking relief without penalty from
interference from an immoveable obstruction (Rule 24-2),
an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1), or wrong
putting green (Rule 25-3)
The nearest point of relief is the point on the course nearest
to where the ball lies:
1. That is NOT nearer the hole, and
2. Where complete relief from the interference is taken.
In order to determine the nearest point of relief accurately,
the player should use the club with which she would have
made her next stroke if the condition were not there. Then
drop a ball within one club-length of that point, not nearer
the hole. Any club may be used to determine “one clublength.”
A ball to be dropped under the Rules must be dropped by
the player herself. She must stand erect, hold the ball at
shoulder height and arm's length and drop it. If a ball is

McCrary. The following is from a superintendent's article:
“It is much easier to grow Bermuda grass if you don't over
seed. You can avoid the inhibitory effect that perennial
ryegrass has on Bermuda grass emergence in the spring
and early summer, and you reduce the risk of introducing
other grasses and weeds. Research indicates that shoot
density is significantly higher in non over seeded Bermuda
grass compared with over seeded Bermuda grass. A faster
emergence from dormancy and quicker complete coverage
results when superintendents do not over seed. And you
can save thousands of dollars on seed. In addition, you can
knock out Poa annua and other winter-active weeds with a
nonselective herbicide without damaging the dormant
Bermuda grass. In speaking with Ron Rood, he provided
the following: “This winter has been unusually cold and
we had many overcast days. Bermuda grass will not grow
when the night temperatures are below 60 degrees and
when we do not get adequate sunlight. As a result, the
fairway grass and the green tiff eagle grass have become
quite thin. This will improve quite rapidly when the
temperature exceeds 60 degrees at night; we get adequate
sunlight; and we have adequate moisture.” I hope this
information explains why we do not over-seed. In the
meantime, please scatter carts at the end of the paths. Tom
McCrary has handed out a card to every player
emphasizing this and other things that can be done to
protect playing conditions.
The GlenLakes Men's Golf Association held the annual
GlenLakes Cup tournament on March 4th and 5th, 2015.
This tournament plays similar to a Ryder Cup system using
four different formats for each 9 hole match. Teams are
established under a Red or Blue banner. This year, the Blue
Team, playing for Captain Stan Sendlenski, edged the Red
Team (28 points to 26 points), playing for Captain Dave
Tharp. Members of the Blue Team included: Stan
Sendlenski, Dick Broyles, Ken White, Stu Warburton,
Dave Sykora, Pat Casey, Jake Helm, Bob Konetzny, Larry
Gousse, Don Hanson, Bill Stas, Mike Kosteva, Don Kolb,
Richard Provost, Art Haywood, Walt Wilk, Allen
Breithaupt, Lucky Tabor, Frank Mikolajewski, Jerry
Jordan, and Bob Chapin.

played on March 27 and 28 . Results will be in the next
Eagle article. Events coming up in April are the Club
Championship on April 17th and 18th (Bruce Del-Guidice
is the current Champion), and a GLMGA/GLLGA Mixer
on April 23rd.
The Classic Member-Guest signup is up in the proshop.
There will be a limit of 48 teams again this year, so sign-up
early. The Classic Committee has been hard at work
planning another great event.
Attire for the driving range and the golf course was
reviewed by the Board. Clothing must be tasteful golf
attire. Jeans and tee shirts are not allowed. Shirts do not
need to be tucked in. Members are reminded these
guidelines apply to their guests.
The GLMGA Board received a petition that proposed
some changes to the gold/white tee and hole configuration.
The Board approved a slightly modified version of this
proposal. The gold/white tees on holes 5 and 6, and on
holes 12 and 13 will be switched. The gold tee on 5 will
also be moved to the front of the gold tee box. The changes
were tested by a few groups and seemed to be well
received. The changes were reviewed with the USGA and
the course rating will not change. New score cards are
being printed and these changes will be included.
As many of you know, we have been supporting the Weeki
Wachee High School golf team by mentoring them during
practice sessions, giving them old golf clubs and balls, and
a small financial contribution from the Classic Tournament
for their support of the tournament. We want to call your
attention to the Weeki Wachee High School Booster Club
annual fundraiser, “Mardi Gras Auction and Casino
Night”, at 6:30 p.m. April 24th at GlenLakes Country Club.
Advance tickets are $25 per person or $40 per couple and
include dinner and casino 'funny' money. For information,
call Mary Stone at 352-232-0509. We are sure they will
appreciate our support.
We continue to receive questions as to why we don't
overseed. Tom McCrary provided the following: “I have
been asked quite a bit about winter over seeding of greens,
tees and fairways and why we haven't done this in the last
couple of years. This is the first real winter that we have
had in several years. The grass loses color after a frost. But
Bermuda grass starts to green up in a couple of days during
a warm spell. Because the winters in Florida are
inconsistent, it make no sense to jeopardize otherwise
healthy greens. You risk putting your putting surfaces
through 3-4 weeks of wet muddy growth in the fall and 3-4
weeks of spring transition to bring the Bermuda back. You
spend a lot of unnecessary time on your course between
fall and spring trying to get your course to be green in the
winter. And it is not to improve the quality of the greens,
merely the color. Also, the USGA has specifically told us,
they do not recommend we over seed our course.” Tom

Garden Club
On Friday, March 13th, forty members of the
Garden Club travelled to Chinsegut Manor
GlenLakes
in Brooksville. It is located approximately
Garden Club
five miles northeast of the city of Brooksville.
The house and grounds were open to our members. A tour
and discussion of its history was conducted by members of
the “Friends of Chinsegut Hill” organization. Their
website quotes their mission as stated below:
“The Friends of Chinsegut Hill, Inc. (FOCH) is a 501C(3)
nonprofit organization created in 2008 to support research
and educate others on the historical, culture and
environmental importance of Chinsegut Hill and to protect
and preserve the Manor House, grounds and resources,
which is listed on the National Historic Register. It recently
entered into a management agreement with Hernando
County, Florida to restore and operate the historic
Chinsegut Hill Manor House and grounds located in
Brooksville, Florida.
The property was first settled in 1845 and includes a 2story manor house, cabins, kitchen, classroom and
extensive grounds with a rich history directly related to
many current families in the area. The county agreed to
rescue the property, insuring that Chinsegut Hill Manor
and grounds will once again become part of Hernando
County's historic legacy and open to the public.
The state of Florida, through the Florida Division of
Historical Resources, recently provided a grant of $1.5
million to restore the manor house. This restoration will
help maintain this historic site as a part of Hernando
County's legacy.
Picnic lunches were prepared by Publix and a St Patrick's
Day theme ensured that it was a day of “Good Luck”
indeed.… since Chinsegut is an Inuit word meaning a
place where lost things are found. So a special treasure
hunt was held after lunch! The winning team each took
home a “pot of gold” Pansy.

and Chris Tharp.

Friday, April 17th: Spring Fashion Show “Hooray for
Hollywood”
Our Annual Lunch and Fashion Show. You will experience
the thrill of walking the Red Carpet with our famous
models: Helen Connors, Toni De Santo, Annette Davis,
Virginia Kennedy, Evelyn Lawlor, Lynn O' Dom, Margie
Parker, and Patsy Ryan. Will one of them take home an
Oscar? Fashions will be provided by Beall's of Crystal
River and the show will be coordinated by Susan Strausser
of Beall's. Wigs will be provided by Tiffany. There will be
24 outfits ranging from casual to dressy and will include
golf attire. This year's Fashion Show chairpersons are
Gloria Allison and Laney Mailloux. Many thanks to both
of them for all of their hard work.

The proceeds from the raffle sales at this event will benefit
our Scholarship Fund and this year's chosen charity, “K9
Partners for Patriots”. Mary Peter of K9 for Patriots will be
on hand with her dog, Shasta. Her organization trains dogs
for vets who suffer from PTSD. Her mission is to provide
any veteran or active military personnel suffering with
PTSD/TBI with a service dog if needed.
The Scholarship Committee chaired by Gerry Morrone is
hard at work this month accepting applications and
reviewing candidates. We will present our scholarship
award to the winning high school senior at the Fashion
Show and Luncheon. Other Scholarship Committee
members are Helen Connors, Marita Hickey, Joy Holme,
Carmela Ivani, and Chris Tharp.
Donations of prizes and baskets for the raffles can be made
to Laney Mailloux, at 8851 Mississippi Run, as soon as
possible. The deadline is April 10th, however please try to
get things to her in a timely manner as baskets need to be
organized and wrapped.

you, Soleil, for all you have given of yourself to many of the
GlenLakes clubs.
Una splendida notte di buon cibo, buona
domande, e molte risate abbiamo
condiviso tutti abbiamo imparato e
dimenticato dentro e fuori la scuola.
We have pushed our clocks ahead one hour so spring
must be right around the corner. With the coming of
spring we turn our attention to St. Joseph's Day. In the
spirit of St. Joseph and in sharing the custom of the
people of Sicily who have a St. Joseph's table set up in the
town square so all the hungry may come and eat, the IRC
will have cooked, served and shared a meal with the
People Helping People program of Hernando County.
Thank you to Annette Davis for her work in organizing
the cooks and volunteers for this project. Thank you, too,
to all who volunteered and those who contributed money.
A job well done.
A wonderful night of good food, good questions
and many laughs as we shared all we learned and forgot in
and out of school.
And the winners are: April and Mike Bauch, Joan and Dick
Roland, Marilyn and Bill Volckman and Cathy and Lou
Weber. Congratulations and we hope you enjoy your
"prize" dinners at La Bella Napoli!
Thank you Helen Connors and your committee for all the
work, time, and perhaps even some frustration at putting this
great event together for our club. Thank you to Chef Mik for
delicious sandwiches and soup and many of the extras you
provided for us. It's amazing that when your crew makes the
sandwiches they taste so much better than when we make
them at home. The soups too were outstanding as was the
staff. Thank you to the hospitality chairs who solicited such
delicious desserts. Tante grazie a tutti!

By the time you read this article we would have met and
celebrated one of our favorite women who is leaving
GlenLakes to be with her family in Texas. On Wednesday,
March 11th, many residents who have been touched by the
warmth and sincerity of Soleil Milata shared a dinner to say
our farewells and show our appreciation for all Soleil has
done for our community. Soleil is a charming, fun loving
individual who, with her contagious smile, had brightened
our lives for many years. She will surely be missed. Thank

We have been having so much fun that winter has slipped
by and spring is officially here with the much awaited
daylight savings time.
We have quite a few new members since the first of the
year and our March meeting was well attended. The
upcoming events for April look great, thanks to our
planning committee. We will see The King and I at the
Show Palace, there will be an outing to Tampa Bay Downs
(which was rescheduled from last month), the wonderful
sunset picnic at Pine Island, attend a play at Stage West and
last but not least a tour of the Train Museum in Brooksville
with lunch at The Tilted Tea Cup. In addition to all this, we
have our Tuesday night dinners every week.
We invite interested Singles to our next meeting on
Tuesday, April 7th, at 4:30pm in the ballroom, where you
will have an opportunity to hear more about coming events
and becoming a member. Detailed information on dates of
meetings and all events are posted at every mail kiosk.
If you have any questions about meetings or membership,

YES, MADNESS IS THE WORD THAT DESCRIBES
THE PICKLEBALL MANIA THAT HAS TAKEN OVER
GLENLAKES. There's more and more talk circulating
about this new fascinating game and we have seen an
increase in the number of people coming out to play.
However, we want to encourage more of you to come and
give it a try. The new courts are superb and the game is fun
to play. Open play is on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at
8:30 am. There is a court set aside for beginners and
someone is there to assist you in learning the game during
this time. There are extra paddles and balls available but
please note that these extra paddles and balls are only
available during these specific open play times. At any
other time, you will have to provide your own equipment.
We also want to get the word out that there is also a group of
ladies who play on Wednesday afternoons at 2 pm who are
helping new players learn the game. Extra paddles are also
available during this time. Spring is here and the weather
is so awesome so COME – LEARN – PLAY AND ENJOY.
Remember, you need to be a GlenLakes Club Member to
play.

Congratulations and Thank You to GlenLakes. In 2014,
GlenLakes Donors provided 140 units of blood, providing
needed blood products to over 400 patients. Our first
Blood Drive of the year in February was a great success!
Thanks to the participation, we supplied 21 units of blood
to our community supply for the local hospitals. The need
for blood never takes a day off, especially in the
Spring/Summer when the birds fly north. Every donation
can save up to three lives. Do something amazing, give
blood.

I have personally have been wearing compression wear 24
hours a day 7 days a week for the last year. I have the 2XU
Compression Apparel brand tights (very expensive
however very high end quality) and also Tommy Copper
brand (fairly moderately price and good quality). I believe
that it keeps me up and running. It is part of my everyday
existence. It has been a life enhancer.
So whether you play tennis, pickleball, golf, hike, jog,
work in the yard….you really should check it out.
The Tennis Court Lights
We are very fortunate to have some of the best tennis court
lighting available. At the Country Club Courts the
ON/OFF switch has been relocated to inside the back court
gate (closest to the pool). The top button turns them on. The
bottom button turns them off.
At the Tennis Center Courts the individual light switches
for all four courts are located near Court #3. They are
outside the court, parking lot side, near the fence. They are
white electrical boxes with red levers situated on a white
post. When you turn the lights on it takes a couple minutes
for them to come up to full power. One thing to understand
about our lights….once the lights are on and you
accidently turn the lights off…they WILL NOT come back
on immediately. They first must cool down. This will take
about 10 minutes or more. They will eventually come back
up to full power.
Both the Country Club Courts and the Tennis Center
Courts lighting systems are programmed to only supply an
electrical current that allows the lights to turn on around
dusk and will automatically turn off at 10:00-ish at night.
You still must hit the switch to the appropriate court to
engage the lights.
Now here is the big request:
We as GL Members must take the responsibility to turn the
lights OFF after completing play. We will save so much

This is the month of falling feathers…
I say this because the snowbirds are starting
their flight back to the great north. It is sad to
see them go. Watch for falling feathers.
Tennis wise…we have had a wonderful season. We had
great member interaction and play. Our reservation system
and scheduling of programs seem to be working well.
Weather-wise we made it through the short cold snap
without any water freezing issues. Auggie has taken the
winter jackets off the water fountains. Spring has finally
sprung. Soon, I will be complaining of the heat and
humidity returning and counting the days to relief.
So the heat is coming. Remember all your hot weather
advice: hat, sunglasses, light colored clothes, invest in
wicking technical wear, drink plenty of fluids before,
during and after play…(non-alcoholic), supplement with
gatorade or my favorite…pickle juice, play early before
the afternoon heat…be safe…stop if you feel light headed
or “weird.”
Snowbirds…Have a great summer. I hope you don't have
to shovel snow when you get home. : )

A Funny Thing Happened at the GL Tennis Courts

A funny thing happened during my private tennis lesson
with Judy. Having been off court for almost a month due to
various health issues (good excuse for not playing well), I
was consistently hitting the volley wide and/or into the net.
Judy marched me down to the pickleball courts, stuck a
paddle in my hand and proceeded to instruct me with her
new teaching tool. Since you have to hit the pickleball up
and it's preferable to hit the tennis ball up to get it over the
net, the fundamentals are very similar. Amazingly, hitting
the pickleball helped improve my volleys. Who would
have thunk it? Judy also gave me a short lesson on
pickleball scoring, etc. We played a short game and she
pretty much cleaned my clock, 11-2. My celebration at
scoring 2 points against her would have made NFL players
proud.
Since this is Tennis News, I should get back on topic. Most
of you know that the Timber Pines community switched
some of their courts from hard to Har-Tru like ours.
Possibly some of the Timber Pines ladies who played
against us in our now defunct league and played on our
stupendous courts may have pressured management to do
this. The soft courts are much easier on our bodies and slow
the ball down somewhat so we “WISER” people have
more time to react. Just in case you have forgotten a past
article, we people of a certain age prefer to be called
“WISER” instead of older. For whatever reason,
GlenLakes management made the decision to go with the
soft courts and we the players really appreciate it. We love
our courts and we are so lucky to have Auggie taking care
of them for us. Thanks Auggie !!!!!!
Snowbirds are packing and preparing to travel back up
north but their departures may be delayed until some of the
snow melts. We do love Florida don't we? Keep hitting the
little yellow ball and I hope to see you on court soon.
We Went and We Saw…

On February 16th, George and I went over to the Delray
Beach Open Tennis Tournament. This is the only combined
ATP World Tour (featuring our top professionals currently
on tour) and the ATP Champions Tour field (featuring past
legends of the game like James Blake, Michael Chang and
Justin Gimelstob, all of whom competed in this year's
event). We went over to see the 2014 US Open Champion
and last year's Delray Champion - Marin Cilic play but he
had to withdraw due to a shoulder injury. We did get to see
South African Kevin Anderson (the 2012 Delray
Champion) and American John Isner. The tournament was
eventually won by Ivo Karlovic (the other Croatian) World
th
#29 and one week shy of his 36 birthday. He became the
oldest winner in Delray Beach history beating out Donald
Young. The Bryan Brothers won the doubles again.
The venue is small so fans get to be very close to the
players and the practice courts are very accessible. We had
great seats right behind the players and the weather was
beautiful. I highly recommend the trip over to see this
tournament where you can see world class players up
close. To see that level of play which combines power,
placement, top spin, under spin, power serves and kick
serves plus a variety of shots including lobs and drop shots
is a lot of fun to watch and very educational. You also can
observe the interaction between the players and their
coaches on the practice courts. You should take any
opportunity you can to be part of a professional
tournament experience. The excitement of seeing it first
hand is so much fun.

The Library Volunteers would like to thank Heloise
Crowell for her six plus years of service to the GlenLakes
Library. Heloise is moving on to other volunteer work. We
will miss her contributions to the library. We want to
welcome back to GlenLakes our Library founder, Bill
Teich, and our newest volunteer, Chris Tharp. The library
volunteer team consists of Marita Hickey, Gerry Morrone,
Margie Parker, Ann Sich, Bill Teich, Jane Telander, Chris
Tharp and Raye Wentworth. The Library works on a honor
system... borrow what you want and return it when you’ve
finished. We have paperbound and hardbound fiction as
well as a fine selection of non-fiction, biographies, large
print books, and current magazines. The volunteers thank
GlenLakes residents for the generous donations of current,
good condition books and allowing us to shelve all new
and returned books.

Scarlett Belles
The Scarlett Belles take a walking tour of Historic
Brooksville. Perhaps no other city on Florida's Nature
Coast offers visitors such a neighborly, laid-back
walking tour of oak-canopied streets shading majestic
antebellum homes and shops.
Our next outing is the Starlite Cruise out of Clearwater
on Friday, April 24, 2015. Details to follow on channel

Under the expert guidance of Jan Knowles of the
Historic Hernando Preservation Society, we let our
feet lead us back to a bygone era as we strolled along
brick-paved side streets and admired the wellmaintained lawns and gardens that residents enjoy
every day from the porches of their antebellum
(literally translated from Latin means "before war")
homes. We passed the 100 year old courthouse,
stopped in an antique shop and dined at the Rising Sun
Bistro. While dining together we got to chat about all
that we saw and enjoyed a delicious lunch and each
other's company.
