Speaker biographies
MS VERONICA YATES is the Director at the Child Rights International Network (CRIN).
Veronica Yates joined CRIN when it was part of Save the Children and has led its
independence and growth since then. She has a passionate commitment to children's rights
and achieving real change for children. She is highly ambitious for CRIN's developing
advocacy role and believes that small, focused organisations can make a disproportionate
impact. She is Co-Chair of the International NGO Council on violence against children. She
sits on the Board of Child Soldiers International, Approach Ltd. and is a member of to the
Advisory Committee of Human Rights Watch’s Child Rights Division.
Veronica Yates has a degree in English Literature and a Masters in Creative Writing. Prior to
working at CRIN, she worked in journalism for the BBC in their Brussels office, and briefly
lived in Palestine where she worked for a local NGO.
MR PER LYRVALL is the Executive Vice President of Ethics and Compliance at Stora Enso, a
global renewable materials company active on the biomaterials, packaging boards, paper and
wood products markets. Within Ethics and Compliance Per Lyrvall is globally responsible for
Stora Enso’s Code of Conduct, its Supplier Code of Conduct and connected policies as well
as for compliance investigations.
Per Lyrvall is the secretary of the Stora Enso’s Board of Directors and a member of Stora
Enso’s executive management. His other tasks include being the General Counsel,
responsible for governance and legal affairs. He is also Country Senior Executive, Stora Enso
Sweden. Per Lyrvall has a legal background and has been working for more than 20 years
within Stora Enso.
DR STEVE HOWARD is the Chief Sustainability Officer at IKEA Group and a member of the
Group Management Team, a role he has held since January 2011. He is responsible for the
company's sustainability strategy, environmental and social performance, and the impact of its
products. Prior to IKEA, Steve Howard was the founder and CEO of The Climate Group, an
independent non-profit organisation working internationally with government and business
leaders to cut global emissions and build a low carbon economy.
Prior to The Climate Group, Steve Howard spent 15 years advising major corporations,
NGOs and UN bodies on the environment. He was a Partner at ERM where he led on
Corporate Social Responsibility. Previously, Steve Howard was the founding Director of the
Global Forest and Trade Network for WWF International, where he led an international team
advising 700 companies on forest and supply chain issues. He is also former chair of the UK
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) where he helped achieve far-reaching consensus on a
national forest certification standard and was also founding chair of the Tropical Forest Trust.
Steve Howard has a first-class honours degree in ecology and a PhD in environmental
physics.

MR JOHAN ÖBERG is a Senior Partner and Managing Director of The Boston Consulting
Group (BCG) Sweden. He is a core member of the BCG's Health Care practice, Corporate
Development practice and Private Equity practice, which he also leads in the Nordics. Johan
Öberg coordinates many of the Health Care activities in Europe and leads the firm's
MedTech sector in Europe, focusing on strategy, growth-related assignments as well as
operations initiatives across MedTech, Biopharma, and Provider clients. He has also worked
across a variety of other industries in the Nordics, more broadly across Europe, in the United
States as well as in Asia.
Johan Öberg holds a MBA with distinction from INSEAD and a BA in Business Economics
from Uppsala University and California State University. Prior to joining BCG in 2000, Johan
Öberg worked at Ericsson in a general management position.
Global Child Forum
MR ULF KARLBERG is the Chairman of the Global Child Forum. He is also the Chairman of
the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre in USA and Co-Chair of its international
operations. Ulf Karlberg was the founding Chair of Amnesty International Business Group
and co-authored “Human Rights - a corporate responsibility?”
Between 1989 - 2001 Ulf Karlberg was Executive Vice President at Astra Zeneca,
responsible for all companies in Japan, China, East and South East Asia, Latin America and
Canada. He also led the Corporate Strategy Group in London. Previously Ulf Karlberg
worked with PA International Management Consulting Group, London, as CEO for Western
Europe. Prior to this he worked as Consultant, Marketing Director and Managing Director for
PA Sweden. He has a MSc in Business and Economics from Gothenburg Business School
and Lund University.

MS ÅSE BÄCKSTRÖM is the Managing Director. Previously she was the Head of KPMG
Climate Change & Sustainability Services in Sweden.
Åse Bäckström has also been the Chair of the FAR Sustainability Working Party (the
professional institute for authorized public accountants and other highly qualified
professionals in the accountancy sector in Sweden) and represented FAR in the FEE (the
European accountancy professions) Sustainability Working Party. For several years she also
served on the Boards for Stockholm International Water Institute (SiWi).
Åse Bäckström has worked as a risk and sustainability consultant for Deloitte and as a
project leader for World Business Council, for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in
Geneva. She has a Master of Business & Administration from Gothenburg Business School
and a Licentiate of Economics from The Institute of Technology at Linköping University.

MR HENRIK HOLMQUIST is the Operations Director. He has been a special advisor to the
Secretary General of Save the Children Sweden, and set up the Centre for Children’s Rights
& Corporate Social Responsibility in Beijing and was part of the team developing the
Children´s Rights & Business Principles.
Henrik Holmquist has a background both from international business, government and civil
society and holds an MBA in Political Science from the University of Umeå.

DR FIONA J.Y. ROTBERG is the Research Director. Prior to joining the Global Child Forum
team, Dr Rotberg was the acting Executive Director at the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation.
She was previously an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department at Uppsala
University. Fiona Rotberg earned a PhD with distinction in International Law, Environment
and Natural Resources from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Harvard
University, USA.

About Global Child Forum
”Any company, financial institution or government working for a sustainable future – must see children as their main

The Global Child Forum believes that by creating an independent global platform for informed dialogue and
building partnerships between different sectors of society, we can enable and inspire effective cross-sector action
on children’s rights. We gather global decision-makers from business, government, academia and civil society in a
joint effort to exchange ideas and share knowledge and best practice on child related issues. By effective
information sharing, exposing leading case studies and learning from best practice from all parts of the world, we
aim to drive a sustainable development where children’s rights are respected and supported by all stakeholders in
society.
The Annual Leaders Summit at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden is what Global Child Forum is most
recognized for. The meeting brings together some 400 leaders from international corporations, financial
institutions, the UN and NGOs, government representatives, academia, selected experts and journalists to
discuss, learn and engage in some of the most pressing issues facing the children of the world, in particular
corporate sustainability and children’s rights.
The Global Child Forum also convenes a regional Forum each year. The Global Child Forum on the Middle East
and North Africa in November 2014 marked the first Forum outside Sweden. In September 2015, the second
regional initiative will be held in Johannesburg, Global Child Forum on Southern Africa.
In addition to being a global platform for dialogue and action, the Global Child Forum initiates, coordinates and
produces studies and analysis. We also engage our Partner and Expert Networks in sector specific initiatives
related to children’s rights.
The Global Child Forum Web Portal project will result in an online interactive platform for sharing information,
inspiration, best practice, education and knowledge on important children’s rights issues.
Global Child Forum started as an initiative by Their Majesties King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, in 2009 on
the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf is the Honorary
Chairman. Global Child Forum is a Swedish non-profit foundation with headquarters in Stockholm.
