For more information: Mental health skills training for GPs Barwon Medicare Local has collaborated with Barwon Health, local GPs, psychiatrists, consumer and carers to provide support to our local GPs in providing interactive mental health skills training. This online mental health skills training available nationally consists of 18 units, taking approximately six hours. Benefits of the training Provide a ‘cycle of care’ for people with a mental illness. Provide a structured framework for GPs to undertake early intervention, assessment and management of patients and mental illness. Assist with coordination of care and provide a referral pathway to mental health service providers. Allow the GP to actively involve the patient and where possible their carers in their treatment. GPs who have completed GPMHSC accredited mental health training will be able to access higher schedule fee MBS items to develop a GPMHTP utilising MBS Items 2715 or 2717. All GPs are able to access the mental healthcare MBS items to prepare a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan (GPMHTP). Although not mandatory, it is strongly recommended that GPs complete appropriate mental health training (in addition to general medical training), particularly those endorsed by GPMHSC.
