Almost two decades working directly with seniors, their families and their care providers learning about the individual issues that affect seniors as they age and recerive care a strong voice for British Columbia’s nearly 700,000 seniors The Office of the Seniors Advocate will monitor seniors’ services, promote awareness and work collaboratively with seniors, families, policymakers, service providers and others to identify solutions to systemic issues and make recommendations to government on ways to improve care for our aging population. Opening Remarks: April 25 DR. BARBARA L. MILDON Barbara Mildon’s nursing expe- rience spans the domains of clinical care, clinical education, research, regulation and administration. A certified health executive (Canadian College of Health Leaders) and a certified community health nurse (Canadian Nurses Association), Mildon has held progressive clinical practice and management positions in Ontario and British Columbia. She is currently vice president of professional practice and research and chief nurse executive at the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences in Whitby, Ontario. While president of the Community Health Nurses of Canada (2000-2004), she led the development of national standards of practice for community health nursing, which resulted in the recognition of community health nursing by CNA as a specialty practice and its inclusion in the CNA Certification program. Mildon has published and presented widely and is the recipient of several awards. She became president of CNA in June 2012. Keynote Speaker EDITH BLONDEL-HILL, MD, FRCP Dr. Edith Blondel-Hill trained at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and received specialty training in internal medicine, infectious diseases and medical microbiology. She started her career at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton as an infectious diseases consultant and medical microbiologist and moved to Dynacare Kasper Medical Laboratories in 1997. She moved to British Columbia in 2003 where she worked as a microbiology/infectious diseases consultant at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver until 2008. She is currently the microbiology lead and medical director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program for Interior Health and is located at the Larissa Yarr Microbiology Laboratory at the Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna, British Columbia. She has a long interest in antimicrobial utilization, chairing various antimicrobial advisory committees in Alberta and British Columbia as well as being involved in guideline and policy development for antibiotic use and prescribing. She is co-author of the Bugs and Drugs – Antimicrobial/Infectious Diseases Reference Book (currently in 5th edition) and the medical director of the Do Bugs Need Drugs? an educational program to address antimicrobial resistance.
