Daniel Alderfer, Editor
GNAL 2015 OPEN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
The GNAL 2015 Photography Exhibition opened on
March 14 with an outstanding collection of 74 entries by 39
artists. Our juror, Charles Stainback, the Director of the Phillip
and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, spent a
great amount of time as he diligently reviewed all the artwork
and noted the difficulty in selecting many of the awards. He was
impressed at the level of the work and enjoyed the time spent.
After light refreshments and libations generously
provided by Norina Neacsu, Doris Capone, Nancy Moldofsky,
Judy Battaglia, Claire Perles, Ann Marie Geiger,
Pedro Zagitt, Carol & Phil Salter and Arnold Winkler,
results of the judging were officially announced and 17 awards
were handed out by the co-chairs Arnold Winkler and Steven
Goldblatt.
This exhibit was a first-time endeavor for both
chairmen, and would not have been possible without the
extensive help from many others who came forward to volunteer
their time and energy. Special thanks for her guidance must go
to VP Mary Maudsley, who was ever-present whenever a
question came up. A special note of thanks also goes to Cindy
Healy Ely and Mary Ward for the smooth operations inputing
all the information for the labeling and cataloging each of the
entries. We wish to thank the following people who took on the
enormous task of preparing the room for the exhibit, assisting in
setting up the computers and printers, typing labels, receiving
and hanging artwork, soliciting food donations and sitters, and
signing in new GNAL members: Cindy Healy Ely, Mary
Ward, Arnold Winkler, Mary Maudsley, Mike Rosiak, Jill
Rees, Martin Wigg, Steven Goldblatt and Jo Ann Cooksey
Bono. Thanks to Jim Brotzman for the list of available awards.
Much appreciation is also given to the sitters who welcomed
visitors and attended to the gallery: Mary Maudsley, Isabel
Bassman, Al Kukitz, Mary Ellen Sillcox, Mary Alice Ulrich,
Nancy Moldofsky, Trish Lynch, Doris Capone, Joan Rosiak,
Sue Lock, and especially Arnold Winkler, who sat like a worried
mother hen overseeing the displays for the entire weekend. At the
conclusion of the Sunday reception, the room was put back into
classroom order by Judy Battaglia, Fred Moore, Martin Wigg,
Warren Lewis, new member (and Best of Show winner) Pedro
Zagitt and family, Mary Maudsley, Arnold Winkler and Steven
Goldblatt. Thanks to all of you, and apologies if we missed
mentioning your name. Behind all of the volunteers was the
helping hand and advice from President Carol Salter, who was a
constant presence and inspiration, even from her sickbed. We
deeply appreciate her help!
More thanks goes to Treasurer Mike Rosiak for
preparing the checks for the juror and the award winners; and to
Vice President Mary Maudsley for assisting in the awards
presentation, and of course, a huge thank you to all our talented
artists for their talent and inspiration. We could not have done any
of this without them.

MARCH MONTHLY MEETING
WITH NEILA KUN
AND ARLENE GITOMER
With a Paper Workshop lined up at GNAL on
March 28th, Neila Kun and Arlene Gitomer were
excited to discuss and demonstrate the tools and
techniques of the art of paper making at GNAL's March
Monthly Meeting. Both award-winning artists, Neila
and Arlene have been working with paper for 20 years.
They are members of the Guild of Papermakers and
have exhibited their work at the Michener Art Museum
in Doylestown and the Woodmere Art Museum in
Chestnut Hill. Neila also has work in collections at the
Philadelphia Art Museum and the New York Library.
An introduction into the art of paper making
was explained by both artists through the rich and
colorful history of paper beginning with the use of hemp
in China, the shrubs and mulberry trees of Japan, to the
trade routes of the Mediterranean and use of papyrus in
Egypt, up to the present time. A slide presentation
showed examples of each artist's creations. Neila
appreciates the tactile feel while working with pulp, as it
adheres to itself, and does not use paint on her forms.
Instead, Neila enjoys growing garden vegetables which
she often cooks down and adds to paper for a fibrous
effect. Arlene's artwork uses dyes or painted designs
and can also be described as mixed media. She
described some of her work as responses to different
events which have occurred in her life, and noted that
her art is a form of meditation for her.
As the audience gathered around the
demonstration table, Neila and Arlene showed them the
process of how the fibers are drained through a screen,
and a mat of interwoven fibers is placed on an acrylic
sheet to dry. Afterwards, one is ready to draw, paint, or
print on the paper or add other sheets to expand the size
of the paper, since a sheet of paper will shrink 10 to 12
percent once it is dry.
The speakers' personable styles of delivery
appealed to audience members at all levels and kept
everyone engaged in an interactive and lively discussion
not only during the presentation, but afterwards as well.
As mentioned, Neila and Arlene will hold a Paper
Workshop on Saturday, March 28th from 10:00am3:00pm. All levels are welcome.
Our sincere appreciation is given to Jo Ann
Cooksey Bono's Wednesday Evening Watercolor
Class for the display of inspirational artwork which
enhanced the creative setting for this meeting. Thank
you to everyone who helped restore the meeting room
to classroom order. As always, GNAL is grateful
towards its dedicated volunteers!

COLD WAX & OIL WORKSHOP WITH LINDA
BENTON McCLOSKEY
This workshop is the same as Linda's recent January
workshop and invites new students so that they will be
able to participate in "Part 2" of this workshop in
GNAL's 2015-16 program. If you love encaustic, but
are afraid of fusing, this workshop is for you. This is
the new medium that everyone is talking about. It’s so
new that there aren’t any books or DVDs on the
technique. Cold wax looks similar to encaustic. You
will learn the basic techniques and build on them to the
more advanced ones - layering, texturizing, scratching
back, carving, adding collage, stamping, transferring,
etc. Artists in this workshop will explore methods of
building up abstract paintings in layers using cold wax
medium, tube oil paint, powdered pigments and other
media. You will also find new ways to create textures,
lines, scratching back to previous layers, adding
collage using a variety of tools and techniques. No
prior knowledge in using oil. Ask for the Supply List
when registering for this class.
Cost: $165 members/$195 nonmembers; plus $45 fee
for cold wax and other supplies not included on Supply
List. Call Joan Rosiak, 215-234-9138
