STATEMENTS OF
CANDIDATES RUNNING
Arnold Winkler is running for President. His art
focus is photography and digital modification of
photos/images. He has done publicity for GNAL,
been on the board, and co-chaired photography
shows. Arnold would like to more effectively
cooperate with other art organizations in our area as
well as expand photo classes to youth.
—————
Mary Maudsley is running for Vice-President. Her
main interests in art are acrylic, watercolor and
pastels. She became involved with GNAL through a
friend and has held the positions of coordinator for
workshops, co-chair for Theme Show, and Vice
President. She would like to see more members
volunteer in the many activities that we hold at
GNAL and would like to continue serving GNAL.
—————
Mary Ellen Sillcox is running for Board of Drectors.
She is most interested in photography but has
worked in and enjoys other media. Her monther,
Jane Sillcox first got her involved in GNAL. She has
taken a number of photography classes, helped with
shows, and assisted the previous historian with
organizing and classifying the historical aspects of
GNAL. Mary Ellen believes that being a GNAL
board member is a great opportunity to spread her
wings!
—————
Vicki Marino is running for Secretary. Her primary
art interest is watercolor but looks forward to
experimenting with acrylics and pastels. She took
watercolor classes at her local high school where she
now works. The teacher, Ann Brennan, told the
class about GNAL and encouraged us to join. Being
a member of GNAL has been “on the job training”.
When she joined, she immediately became involved
with the shows by submitting work, volunteered with
set-up, break-down and always tried to attend the
receptions and learned as much as she could. She
now co-chairs the non-pro show in February with
Cindy Healy.
Vicki was secretary a few years back, but it was a
temporary fill-in position, finishing the year for
someone. She would like to encourage younger
people to join and become involved. GNAL has been
good to her the last 15 years and she has learned a lot
and forged new and lasting friendships.
—————
Marlene Serafine Gaudio is running for Board of
Directors. She is a 3-D artist, so is especially drawn
to sculpture, but has a deep appreciation for 2-D
works, especially painting. A lifelong resident of the
Greater Norristown area, she deeply respects
GNAL’s sustained mission and felt it an organization
that she should be part of. She’s been teaching in the
Art Dept. of Mont. Co. Comm. College for nearly 40
years and hosts a Biennial Open House (Exhibition &
Sale) at her Mirthful Angel Pottery & Sculpture
Studio. She says she feels GNAL could reach out
particularly to the emerging artists in high school and
college.
—————
Katherine McMullen is running for Board of
Directors. Her art interest started with acrylics but
she has branched out into watercolor and
photography. Katherine is always looking for ways to
get involved in the community and would like to
encourage community involvement in GNAL through
young families and new members. She hopes to bring
some new ideas to GNAL.
—————
Judy Stevens is running for Board of Directors. Her
art focus is pastel painting. She has always been
interested in Art History and anything to do with the
Arts since a child. She will be a monitor in Teresa
DeSeve’s upcoming Plein Air class. She’s earned a
BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree with a major in
Communication Design from Kutztown University
and has had several businesses and all of the
responsibilities that go along with that.

APRIL MONTHLY MEETING
WITH RICH GODSHALL
"The proper framing of art is itself an art, albeit
one that many artists would rather not get too involved
with," according to GNAL's April Monthly Meeting
speaker, Rich Godshall. Rich's presentation, entitled
"Framing Art Properly," approached the art of framing in
a practical, step-by-step manner. Artist and owner of Off
the Wall Custom Framing and Gallery in Skippack, Rich
noted that framing is easier than one may think, although
many artists are unfamiliar with the process and may be
reluctant to frame their own work.
Rich demonstrated basic framing techniques using straightforward, common sense methods and showed
the most efficient ways to frame artwork. For example,
he pointed out that the use of a slip sheet gives a cleaner
cut of the mat. Also, creating a simple orientation line
helps to realign the fallout piece when cutting a double
mat. Changing mat blades after five or six cuts actually
saves you money, because it always ensures a clean cut
on mat board that could otherwise be ruined by a dull
blade.
The audience was shown how to cut double and
triple mats, along with how to hinge-mount art on paper,
and how ATG double-faced tape was the best way to adhere mat and foam core boards. For artwork that does not
require a mat, Rich explained how one would use spacers
that adhere to glass and keep artwork from pressing
against it. Likewise, pastels and charcoals use a raised
mat to keep artwork off of glass. For oil paintings which
are easier to frame, offset clips hold the work in place.
Rich added that conservation glass used in framing gives
artwork protection against ultraviolet rays, and actually
filters out 99 percent of these harmful rays which can fade
the artwork's colors.
Often during the presentation, members and
guests were invited to the demonstration table to get a
closer view of Rich's techniques. He carefully described
the purpose of each of his tools, and which types he
thought were the best in quality for the price. Rich's personable style kept the audience engaged and encouraged
attendees to interact and ask many questions throughout
the meeting. Rich spent an ample amount of time explaining and demonstrating each step, sometimes going
over a particular item more than once. Furthermore, he
continued to answer more questions during refreshments,
making sure that each question received a satisfactory response.
Rich is a graduate of the Hussian School of Art,
and he was a graphic artist for 25 years before he
moved into the art of framing. He has juried several
art exhibits, and most recently was one of two jurors
at the Meadowood Exhibition in March 2015. He has
been owner of Off the Wall Custom Framing and
Gallery in Skippack since 2002. The store will be
featuring its third annual "Small Works" show and
sale from May 1 - 31; opening reception is Friday,
May 1, 6:00-9:00 p.m. GNAL members receive a 20
percent discount for framing at Off the Wall.
Thank you to Jeanne Kelly, Wendy Liu, and
Mary Ward for helping to clean up and restore the
room to classroom order. Thank you to Arlene
Reynolds for her donation to the refreshment table.
A special thank you to Caroline Niesley's Thursday
morning "Drawing With Confidence" Class, Jo Ann
Cooksey Bono's Friday afternoon Beginner's Watercolor Class, and Pat DeVirgilis' Tuesday afternoon
All Media Studio Class for their outstanding artwork
which enhanced the meeting room and inspired everyone in attendance!

Art Fusion 19464 of Pottstown will
be hosting an open show titled
“Her Story” focusing on woman’s
accomplishments this fall.
The show will run from Sept. 19 - Oct. 31, 2015.
The theme of this show is women’s history, the telling of Her Story. All pieces in this show should be
inspired by an important moment in women’s history (such as gaining the right to vote), an important
issue facing women today or in the past (property
rights of married women, equal pay, body image) or
by a famous figure in women’s history (Susan B.
Anthony, Malala Yousafzar).
You will be asked to write a short paragraph, telling
about your piece and what inspired you to create is.
These will be on display during the show. The show
will be part of a free field trip program for local
schools and your work will be part of a discussion
with those students about the evolutions of a woman’s role in society.
Work can be 2D or 3D and created in any medium.

Photography Competition
for Photo Review Magazine
Laurence Miller, Director of the prestigious Laurence Miller Gallery, one of New York City’s leading photography galleries for over 30 years, will be
the juror for the 2015 Photo Review Photography
Competition. The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 30th annual photography competition with a
difference. Instead of only installing an exhibit that
would be seen by a limited number of people, The
Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its
2015 competition issue and on its website. Thus,
the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands
of people all across the world and entrants will
have a tangible benefit from the competition.
Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of
The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. And Mr.
Miller will select one photographer for inclusion in
the summer show at the Laurence Miller Gallery in
New York City. Plus numerous Editors Selections
will be exhibited in several Photo Review web galleries.
Because their work was seen in The Photo Review,
past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their
work to collectors throughout the country.

COLD WAX & OIL WORKSHOP WITH LINDA
BENTON McCLOSKEY
This workshop is the same as Linda's recent January
workshop and invites new students so that they will
be able to participate in "Part 2" of this workshop in
GNAL's 2015-16 program. If you love encaustic, but
are afraid of fusing, this workshop is for you. This is
the new medium that everyone is talking about. It’s
so new that there aren’t any books or DVDs on the
technique. Cold wax looks similar to encaustic. You
will learn the basic techniques and build on them to
the more advanced ones - layering, texturizing,
scratching back, carving, adding collage, stamping,
transferring, etc. Artists in this workshop will
explore methods of building up abstract paintings in
layers using cold wax medium, tube oil paint,
powdered pigments and other media. You will also
find new ways to create textures, lines, scratching
back to previous layers, adding collage using a
variety of tools and techniques. No prior knowledge
in using oil. Ask for the Supply List when registering
for this class.
Cost: $165 members/$195 nonmembers; plus $45 fee
for cold wax and other supplies not included on
Supply List. Call Joan Rosiak, 215-234-9138.
