Dear potential sponsor:
On behalf of the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) 2016 Organizing Committee
I would like to thank you for taking the time to consider supporting this remarkable event.
For over 40 years, GNCTR has united some of the brightest engineering students from across Canada in
a celebration of creativity and technical design. Over 400 participants are educated beyond the scope of
their academics as they overcome challenges from project financing and management, to fabrication and
construction techniques. Teams are taken on a journey from concept to prototype, finishing with a product
they are proud to showcase as their own.
Corporate support is essential to make this event possible. As a sponsor of this event, you have the potential
to network and build relationships with the up-and-coming work force. You will also get the opportunity to
advertise to a specialized demographic as well as local and national media, all while providing students with
invaluable experience.
The following sponsorship package includes an overview of all aspects of the event, including budget and
additional contact information. The GNCTR 2016 Organizing Committee is proud to be bringing this
competition to Ottawa, ON, and hopes to have your partnership along the way.
Thank you for your consideration,
Carl Tusz

the tradition
The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race made
its debut in 1972, hosted by the Alberta chapter of
the American Concrete Institute (ACI), with only
four universities and technical schools in attendance.
Recognizing the necessity for additional rules and
regulations, the event wasn’t repeated until 1975
under the organization of undergraduate students
at the University of Alberta and the University of
Calgary.
Now, after over 40 years, GNCTR attracts over 400
students from over 20 schools across Canada (and
sometimes beyond) to compete to create the world’s
best concrete toboggan. The event has grown into
the oldest undergraduate engineering competition
in Canada.
the event
Over the course of five days and four nights, teams
participate in the opening ceremonies, an activity
day, the technical exhibition, race day and closing
ceremonies. Teams are comprised of up to 30
students, have a team theme, and costumes that
reflect their theme. Each team presents a toboggan
with static concrete running surfaces, a roll bar, and
working steering and braking, that can carry five
people for race day, all while weighing under 300
pounds.
These toboggans must also pass a safety screening
performed by a panel of professionals before they
can be raced.

the hosts
Ottawa is home to about 1,000,000 people, Canada’s parliament, and two major universities. The city
embraces winter with activities like skating on the Rideau Canal or at the City Hall “Rink of Dreams,” Nordic
and alpine skiing in the Gatineau hills, and Winterlude, a two week celebration of the season.
The University of Ottawa is located in the hub of this activity, a stone’s throw away from the Rideau Canal,
the Byward Market’s thriving nightlife, as well as the parliament buildings. uOttawa also boasts being the
only bilingual university in Canada, and has an undergraduate engineering program with over 2600 students.
Ottawa, and the University of Ottawa, represent so much of how we define our great country, making it the
ideal host for GNCTR 2016.
benefits of corporate
sponsorship
Sponsoring GNCTR 2016 provides your company exposure to current undergraduate engineering students
from across the country. Over the course of five days your company could have the opportunity to advertise
and interact with over 400 students, influencing and aiding in the development of the next generation of
engineers. Your company could benefit from the advertising opportunities at the events over the course of
the competition, as well as through promotional materials and online exposure with very wide audiences.
With each participant receiving all promotional materials your logo could be seen on over 20 campuses
within Canada.
Outside of the engineering community, this event attracts large amounts of media coverage. Within the
Ottawa community many local radio, television and prints outlet will cover the event. On a national level
this competition has been featured on CBC, The Daily Planet on Discovery Channel and The Mercer Report.
Additionally, both the Technical Exhibition and Race Day are open to the public.
Without the help of generous sponsors, GNCTR 2016 would not be possible. We hope you will help us reach
our sponsorship target of $44,000.
