It’s fun to potter in the vegetable garden. You get to get dirty, find worms, dig holes and tip water everywhere. Best of all when the plants grow you get to eat them. Swansea Primary School students have been busy in their edible garden. Recently the Kinder, prep and grade one students got their hands dirty putting in some new garden beds in their outdoor learning area and planting their winter vegetable crop. With the help of some of our fantastic parents we planted cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower as well as some herbs and flowers. We would like to thank Spring Vale vineyard for donating the wine barrel garden beds and to Gala vineyard for donating straw. This is part or the schools sustainability program and has the added benefit of encouraging students to eat a more nutritious diet. If you are able to help with this program in any way please contact the school. A minor miracle occurred in Swansea last Thursday evening (26/3), when an audience of 40 adults and 30 children entered the Swansea Town Hall at 7 pm but by 7.45 had been transformed into 70 screaming and giggling kids. Swamp Juice, another performance brought to us by the East Coast Community Arts Initiative, wove a special magic that entranced adults and children alike. With a refreshing disrespect for the conventions of shadow puppetry, Jeff Achtem, of Melbourne’s Bunk Puppets, produced a performance that had our focus on the simple story while being simultaneously aware of how the illusion was being produced. This was a delightful performance in itself. The combined effect was one of great fun, complete audience involvement and an infectious wave of childlike joy that soon filled the hall. As part of ongoing efforts to target rubbish dumping, the Glamorgan Spring Bay Natural Resource Management Committee held their annual Clean Up Australia Day event on Sunday 1st March at the old Lake Leake Quarry within a PWS Conservation Area along the Lake Leake Highway. Volunteers, PWS Rangers, SES volunteers and Council staff worked together to fill a 2 ton truck and a half ton ute with large rubbish items such as iron, steel, other metals, dishwashers, a couch, armchairs, mattresses, bed bases, gas cylinders, children’s play equipment, car parts, foam packaging and building materials. In addition to this we filled 30 bags with smaller rubbish items such as cans, glass and plastic bottles, cardboard, clothing, shoes, batteries, kitchenware, take away food packaging, children’s toys, aerosol cans and nappies. We also removed 25 tyres and a large volume of garden waste. This former quarry at Lake Leake has long been a rubbish dumping hotspot. The Glamorgan Spring Bay NRM Committee is working with Tasmania Police to monitor this site and other rubbish dumping sites across the municipality. The time has come to take action on illegal dumping! By the finale, a 3D extravaganza that left me with a ricked neck from avoiding a flying octopus that swooped on me from the stage, we were all willing accomplices in the wonderful illusion spun by Jeff and his team. Production was immaculate, the evening went smoothly under the watchful eye of ECCAI and we bubbled out on to the main street thankful for such wonderful opportunities in our little town. So thanks again to ECCAI and of course to Ten Days / Tas International Arts Festival, for it’s support of the project. Brett Martin Swansea State Library has a new phone number 6257 8607. Please use this number for all enquiries regarding the library If you witness illegal rubbish dumping call the Litter Hotline on 1300 135 513 or visit www.epa.tas.gov.au Thank you to the volunteers for all their hard work and support.
