THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Vol. 28 No. 26
Mark 5:21-43
JUNE 28, 2015
Jesus raised the dead to life with a touch. A word. And faith. We might revive a
friendship (or a parish) if we met. And talked. And prayed.
Question of the Week
The question of the week invites the parish community to share faith by reflecting on and
discussing Sunday’s Gospel throughout the week.

From the Pastor’s Desk
FEAR IS USELESS. WHAT IS NEEDED IS TRUST. TO THE WIDE WAITING ARMS OF THE LORD: We extend our prayerful sympathy to Carol Pioli and her family on the death of Carol’s Mom, Ann Pioli. We have walked with Carol on this transition for her Mom, and it has taught us lessons in how God’s wisdom and mercy work in our lives. We just don’t understand it when we see it. WELCOME IN! Recently, Karen Negroski, the daughter of Bill and Jane, has registered in the parish. Karen is the young woman whose been helping Bill get to church with us. I am grateful to her, because I like having Bill with us at Mass. THREE TO GET READY: What follows are the Scripture references for next weekend’s Liturgy. I encourage you to make some time to read these readings and reflect on them in preparation for Mass next weekend 1. (Ezekiel 2:2-‐5) God sends his friend and prophet Ezekiel to speak to Israel, a people who is hard and obstinate of heart. Lucky Ezekiel! How hard and obstinate is my heart when God calls me to change and grow? 2. (2 Corinthians 12:7-‐10) Paul shows his human side when he complains about the thorn in his flesh. Nobody knows exactly to what he is referring. In response to Paul’s complaining, God assures him: “My grace is sufficient for you”. When has God’s grace “been sufficient for you”? (Mark 6:1-‐6) I saw a bumper sticker yesterday which read: “Don’t believe everything you think.” The message of Jesus is so simple, and uncomplicated. Do I sometimes over-‐think my relationship to Jesus and His Gospel? PARISH FINANCES: We hope that you were able to pick up your monthly mailing from the gathering space this weekend. (We’re trying to develop this “pick it up after Mass system” in an attempt to save money on postage.) The mailings that weren’t picked up will be sent out in the mail. Included in this mailing is a thumbnail sketch of our financial situation, including a line item look at our projected expenses for fiscal year 2015-‐2016) The letter from me on the other side of the paper tries to portray an understanding of where we’re coming from in establishing this budget, and why. We encourage you to take some time to study the budget as it is presented. If you have any questions, members of the Finance Council will be available next Sunday, in one of the upstairs classrooms to bring our financial picture into focus. Be on the lookout for a “wall of sheep” coming to a gathering space near you.) I’ll be away this week, attending a priests’ conference in St. Louis. One of the featured speakers is Father Greg Boyle who wrote the book, Tattoos on the Heart. I’m really looking forward to his presentation. Parish Events
Peter’s Pence Collection To Be Taken Up This Weekend – The Peter’s Pence
Collection unites us in solidarity with Pope Francis and his works of charity toward those in need.
This collection will take place in our parish and throughout the Diocese this weekend. These
donations support the charitable works of our Holy Father and provide emergency assistance to
those most in need, including victims of oppression, natural disasters, and war.
An envelope for making your donation can be found in your monthly envelope packet.
We ask that you be generous in your support of this appeal and that you make your donation at
your earliest convenience.
Independence Day - July 4 – The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is a federal
holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The
parish offices will be closed on Friday of this week to give our staff a long weekend during which
to observe this holiday and to celebrate with their family and friends the freedoms that we enjoy
today through the sacrifice of others. Our regular schedule will resume on Monday, July 6.
Bulletin Deadline – Because of the short week, bulletin articles will be due on Tuesday at
5:00 p.m.
FINANCIAL UPDATE – Below you will find the financial report for May 2015. If you have
questions about the parish finances at any time, please feel free to contact a member of the
Finance Council. Their names and contact information are listed below and are also available on
the parish website at www.goodshepherd-sc.org.

RETIREMENT DATE NOW SET – As many of you know, some time ago I announced my plans
to retire. Since the duties of the Parish Manager have changed dramatically over the years, that
plan has been delayed several times as we’ve attempted to identify how best to meet our staffing
needs, especially amid the budget concerns that we now face. While our plans have not been
finalized, we do know enough to allow me to retire effective July 31. Beyond that time I will
remain on the White Rabbit Committee, while completing some long-overdue projects on a
volunteer basis and assisting wherever possible with the transition.
The financial concerns we face are real. Please join together in prayer for the health of
the parish. We ask too that you give generously of your time, talent, and treasure as we move
through these difficult times.
May Grocery Certificate Winner – Congratulations also to Connie Olsson, our May
Grocery Certificate winner. Connie received a $25 Giant Grocery Certificate simply by
participating in the parish’s Gift Certificate sales program. Eligibility to win is easy. When you
buy Giant or Weis Gift Certificates after mass or in the parish office during the week, you are
invited to complete an entry form. On the first workday following the last weekend of the month, a
member of the staff draws the form of the lucky winner from the names of those who participated
during the month. The person whose name is drawn is then notified by telephone that their name
has been selected. Certificates can either be mailed to the recipient or picked up in the parish
office
Please remember that you can help to support the parish’s General Fund by purchasing
your Gift Certificates here at Good Shepherd before you shop. You receive the full value of the
card while the parish earns 5% of every Gift Certificate sold.
Have a blessed week, everyone, and a safe and Happy Fourth!
Dee Treaster, Parish Manager

Child and Youth Protection: New Pennsylvania State laws are affecting all volunteers who have “regular, direct” contact with children and youth. The movie is 102 minutes long and rated PG for some action and mild rude humor. No admission. We’ll provide some refreshments, too. Youth Ministry in the Warehouse
When we are at our weakest… God is at His strongest. That is what I have been
telling myself over these past few weeks. God is at His strongest… trust that…
Many of you are hearing about the financial situation of the parish at Mass this weekend and we
need to all come together and trust that God will guide us in this time. He does not have a habit of
plunging us into a dark tunnel without giving us the life giving light to see us through! To help in
the situation, Youth Ministry will take a break this summer, and will cut back a bit over this next
year. We have worked hard to provide a fun and faith infused program that meets many needs
and reaches many different levels of spirituality, as well as intergenerational hearts. What I hope to
count on is the generous volunteering spirit of all of you to continue to provide some of our favorite
activities and events this coming year.
th
Due to the situation, we will no longer be holding the Lock-In scheduled for July 17 , but hope to
th
th
have other available happenings this year to use as a suitable make up for any 9 or 10 grader
who missed this past year’s retreat. Please note that Faith Formation will continue on a regular
schedule starting in September.
One of the changes this coming year will be to our weekly WORD and SHOUT programs. Instead,
we will try to offer one night (special themed evening, movie nights, etc.) each month if scheduling
permits, and will continue with L.O.F.T. the first and third Thursday of each month. We hope also
to continue with our annuals: Sleep Out Saturday, Advent Gingerbread Night, Senior to Senior,
etc. and will have information on the Youth Ministry bulletin boards for all events.
You can find all information on the wiki page (shepherded.pbworks.com) as well as our WORD
and SHOUT Youth Ministry Good Shepherd Facebook page and updates on Twitter
(@WORDyouthgroup). Please make sure to “Like and Follow” and check these regularly. The
Youth Ministry page in the bulletin will resume in the fall.
Please email me if you have any questions, suggestions, concerns, or just want to say “Hi” and
know that while I may not be as visible in the Warehouse, I am lifting you all in prayer as you
“TJWY” (take Jesus with you) each and every day this summer. ([email protected])
I do hope to meet a few times over the summer… for an NCYC gathering, perhaps a July “Meet
me at the movies” night, and in mid-August for our Senior Creamery night. If you are interested in
joining us for a few L.O.F.T. nights this summer, please email me… keep in touch… and continue
to lift all here at Good Shepherd in prayer. YOU are His hands and feet… YOU make a
difference… YOU are who I am counting on for support. YOU are loved…
P.S. CLASS OF 2015…go sign the door frame inside the Warehouse before you head to
college!!!
PHIL 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Big hugs…I’ll see you at Mass!
<>< Blessings, Elaine ☺ TJWY
