The Haier story – how it all began with a hammer…
In 1984, Zhang Ruimin, the current CEO of Haier, who at
the time was the director of a small refrigerator factory in
Qingdao, received a customer complaint regarding a faulty
product. Mr. Zhang had all the faulty models on the factory
floor lined up and proceeded to smash them with a
sledgehammer in front of his entire staff. Those
responsible for the products were invited to do the same.
Ever since, the company has fixed itself a clear objective:
to build high quality, reliable products. 30 years later, Haier
is the world’s leading white goods manufacturer,
recognised for its cutting edge design and innovations .

A success story
How it all began with a hammer…
In 1984, when Zhang Ruimin, now CEO, was appointed director of the Qingdao Refrigerator Factory, it
was just a small ailing collective production plant with a debt of 1.47 million RMB (approx. 160000
euros). Following a customer complaint and to emphasise the importance the company placed on
quality, Mr. Zhang lined up the faulty models on the factory floor and proceeded to smash them with a
sledgehammer. Those responsible for the products were invited to do the same. ''There is no A, B, C,
or D quality,” he said at the time. ''There's only acceptable and unacceptable.''
The factory has since grown to become what is now known as the Haier Group, China's leading
home appliance manufacturer, one of the country’s most admired companies and one of the
most respectable brands worldwide. The group has forged the identity of the city of Qingdao (in the
Shandong Province) in its own image – the company is omnipresent, with an avenue named after it, a
technology park and a museum of science and technology.
Haier’s international reputation has continually improved over the last 30 years. 19 of the
company’s products, including refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, televisions, water
heaters, personal computers, mobile phones and kitchen appliances, have been ranked among the
“Top Brands” in China and the Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and
Quarantine has rated Haier’s refrigerators and washing machines among the “Top Global Brands” in
China.
With a presence mainly in Asia (70% of sales) up until 2000, Haier decided to gain a strong
foothold in Europe and opened a subsidiary, locating its headquarters in Varese, Italy. Today, the
group is present in more than 30 European countries, and relocated its European headquarters to
Paris, France in 2010, whilst keeping a support structure in Varese, Italy.
Thanks to CEO, Zhang Ruimin’s brand strategy, Haier was named the world’s number one white
goods manufacturer in 2009 (according to statistics from Euromonitor based on volume market share
per brand). Haier has confirmed its global position by retaining the title for five years in a row.
Haier has evolved as a result of its three phases of ‘brand building’, ‘diversification’ and
‘globalisation’, and since 2005 has entered into its fourth phase of development. The Haier Group is
convinced that the key to successful globalisation is successful localisation. In other words, the
establishment of a “Three-in-One” operational structure that brings together design, production and
marketing as close to the sales territory as possible. This means using local employees and financial
resources to fully integrate the group into the country it is working in and cooperating with.
As part of its commitment to increase customer interaction, Haier has embraced a ‘networking
strategy’ for the development of a connected enterprise. By building an enterprise with no
boundaries, Haier aims to break down the barriers that exist between the enterprise and the consumer
Haier headquarters – Qingdao
A clear business philosophy
Strategy based on 6 dimensions
Haier’s business strategy is focused on maximizing products, market segments and geographic coverage
while simultaneously ensuring that the company delivers the most innovative breakthrough products that
maximize cost efficiency. In order to achieve these ambitious goals, Haier has identified 6 key focus areas :
Product range enlargement
In order to maximise its brand development, Haier pursues and accelerates efforts to extend its product
range. Today, Haier’s broad product portfolio covers such diverse areas as cooking products, home
solutions, solar thermal systems, air conditioning and heat pumps.
Coverage of all market segments
By covering all market segments, including the high-end segment, Haier maintains a strong foothold in all
market segments.
Geographic development
Haier growth in priority markets such as China, America, Europe and Asia Pacific has not impeded its
development in emerging markets. The success of the company’s geographical development is one of the
cornerstones of its growth.
Industrial platforms
Production efficiency is guaranteed through Haier’s ongoing investment in its industrial platforms and
manufacturing lines.
R&D Innovation and Design
Haier’s ongoing investment in R&D is one of the key drivers of its success. The company invests 4% of
turnover in R&D and has 8150 employees involved in innovation programmes around the world.
As the first and the most powerful domestic enterprise design center, Haier Design Center obtained more
than 60 awards of industrial design, including 37 iF awards, 20 reddot awards, 3 Gmark awards, 3 IDEA
awards etc.
HR Empowerment Philosophy
Haier deploys efficient management practices that allow values of courage, self-determination and ability to
“think out of the box” to grow (inverted triangle and ZZJYT management innovation programmes).
A business strategy that has sparked global recognition
Since 1984, thanks to the determination of its management team, Haier has built itself a global reputation - starting in
China, where Haier is one of the country’s most admired brands, and now worldwide. Haier’s presence in the most
prestigious business rankings reflects this success and is recognition of its philosophy and the results it has achieved
around the world.
 Haier Group Chairman & CEO, Zhang Ruimin, ranked among “The World’s 50 Greatest Leaders (March

Quality
At Haier, quality is the foundation upon which the brand’s
reputation is built.
Service Quality
Customer satisfaction and service excellence are essential
to Haier (after-sales and Customer service dedicated

Product Quality
Reliability, durability and performance are ensured by
rigorous quality control procedures.
Environmental Quality
Haier is truly committed to going the extra mile to
incorporate environmental concerns when developing new
products.
Haier sets the
international standard
for water heaters…
The commission for the safety of household
and similar electrical appliances of the
International Electronics Commission
(IEC/TC61) announced that the water
heater security standard originally
proposed by Haier has become the
international standard. In July 2008, Haier
took part in the drafting of nine international
standards, three of which (relating to
washing machines and water heaters) went
on to become international standards.
In 2014, Haier became the first manufacturer in its category to receive the VDE Seal of Quality for its series of
Three Door (3D) combi fridge-freezers, due to its simple operating system, refrigeration efficiency, world-class
hygiene levels and unbeatably low noise levels.
In 2014, Haier introduced its first lifetime warranty for the compressor in its large capacity American
refrigerators. This initiative reinforces the company’s philosophy of putting the consumer at the heart of its
strategy. Customer satisfaction is one of the core values of the Haier Group and it is achieved through the
marketing of ever more innovative products and constant investment in R&D. With this lifetime guarantee,
Haier customers can enjoy peace of mind and 100% confidence in their purchase.
Haier’s commitment to product quality is demonstrated in the promise to provide a full refund to any customer
unsatisfied with a Haier product in its first 90 days after purchase.
Design
Haier incorporates the customer at a very early stage in the design process. The company is committed to
having an ongoing process of consultation with consumers in order to understand current needs and future
demands.
The contemporary home has evolved. Appliances and televisions are now as much ‘part of the furniture’ as the
furniture itself. Haier is at the forefront of understanding and interpreting trends.
For several years, the numerous international awards won by Haier in Europe and throughout the rest of the
world have rewarded the group’s strong commitment to achieving excellence in Quality and Design.
A few examples:
 Haier Smart Window Side by Side refrigerator is awarded 2015 red dot award

ensures that the products it designs respond perfectly to the needs and expectations of its customers. Customer
involvement is sought at every stage of the process, from the initial development stage, through to the design of the
product.
Haier’s respect for the environment is evidenced in its innovative and energy efficient products. While, Haier’s
commitment to continual development sees the company invest heavily in R&D to support its ongoing innovation.
Launch pad for excellence – the Research & Development Centre
In December 1998, Haier opened its first Research & Development Centre which incorporated a design department. This centre
includes, amongst other things, an environmental laboratory, a climate simulator, a sound testing room and a darkroom.
The group has obtained 15,737 technology patents including 5,598 for Haier inventions. Only in 2013, Haier has obtained
1,785 technology patents including 882 for inventions.
As part of its commitment to European expansion, Haier has since opened research centres in Italy and in Germany.
By drawing upon local market research, Haier’s R&D centres aim to develop products that are perfectly suited to the needs and
expectations of European consumers. To do this, Haier constantly innovates and invests 4% of its turnover in R&D.
In 2011, Haier strengthened its presence in Europe by opening an R&D centre dedicated to White goods in Nuremberg,
Germany. Initially dedicated to dishwashers, the centre’s research now covers refrigerators and freezers.
This centre offers indisputable advantages to the group, thanks to:
Close proximity to its clients and the market;
A better management of customer needs/demands;
Innovative and competitive solutions;
The construction of the brand’s image in Europe.
In order to meet its objectives, Haier has recruited some top talents (including hydraulic engineers) to better respond to the

expectations and needs of consumers. More than 15 people work in this 1000m centre.
In 2012, Haier opened an R&D centre in Lyon, France, dedicated to the new Home Solutions strategic business unit. The
2
group is investing 1M€ in this site over two years. A team of specialists in Thermal and Climatic Engineering work on the 400m
site. Local teams are charged with developing a full range of systems for heating, cooling and producing sanitary hot water for the
Residential and Commercial European markets.
Haier has been able to get closer to both its customers and the market while demonstrating its desire to develop products which
are perfectly adapted for the needs and demands of European consumers.

Corporate Responsibility &
Preserving the environment throughout the product lifecycle
Partner of the 2008 Beijing Olympics with
environmentally friendly products
Haier became the first official supplier of household
electrical appliances in Olympic history by signing a
contract with the 2008 Beijing Organising
Committee, making available 60,000 ecological,
energy-efficient products.
Keeping in mind the mission of the Beijing Games (a
green, people focused and technology oriented
Olympic Games), and drawing on its experience as
the supplier of air-conditioning units for the Olympic
Stadium in Athens in 2004, Haier designed a
complete range of environmentally friendly products
for the 2008 event
Thirty-one product categories, including airconditioners, washing machines and immersion
heaters were installed across the Olympic sites in
Beijing and other host towns.
The products that were designed for the Olympic
Games are now available for purchase throughout
China.
Whilst placing an emphasis on quality, Haier also takes
a strong interest in its customers and their immediate
surroundings. As early as the 1990s, Haier obtained
numerous environment related certifications and
acknowledgements from professional organisations
including the well known Japan Electrical Safety &
Environment Technology Laboratories.
Thanks to its efforts, in 1997 Haier became the first
Chinese manufacturer of household appliances to
obtain ISO14001 certification for environmental
management. As a result, Haier went on to obtain
QC08000 certification for its management process systems
for dangerous substances. It also acquired RoHS
certification from the European Union (for the restriction of
dangerous substances).
In 2002, Haier was among the first businesses to bring
class A+ products with low energy consumption to the
European market. Six Haier refrigerators were eligible for
this European energy saving standard.

Putting the ‘human’ back into Human Resources
Customer satisfaction is the cornerstone of Haier’s philosophy, and people’s happiness a main objective, so with
this in mind, the group’s Human Resources pay particular attention to improving working conditions and ensuring
personal development for its teams. Haier recognises the invaluable importance of making people a vital
component of its business. Whether it’s empowering employees to lead and seeking input from customers, the
ethos remains the same. Haier is a company which thrives by engaging people at every level of the organisation.
Haier’s management models, such as ‘OEC*’, the ‘market chain’ and ‘integration of individuals and goals’, have
been used as case studies at Harvard Business School, University of Southern California, Lausanne’s IMD
(Switzerland), INSEAD (France) and Kobe University. Haier’s ‘market chain’ management model was also added
to the European Union’s case study library.
* OEC: O stands for Overall; E stands for Everyone, Everything, and Everyday; C stands for Control and Clear.
OEC means that employees should complete the tasks assigned to them each day
Customer satisfaction: the key to Haier’s success story
Haier’s philosophy has always focused on the individual. The group puts customer satisfaction at the
heart of its core values and its greatest ambition is to gain a customer’s loyalty. Indeed, the workforce prides
itself on setting the best example possible, pushing the boundaries of innovation and design to keep in line
with their customers’ needs and expectations.
User interaction is a top priority at Haier. To gain a better understanding of user satisfaction, Haier takes all
ratings and reviews into consideration (in line with the AFNOR quality certification). Haier then automatically
sends all reviews to R&D centres. In addition, from September customers will be able to easily get in touch
with a Haier representative through their website.
It is down to convictions like these that Haier has learnt how to move from being a small scale collective
factory on the verge of bankruptcy to the world’s number one white goods manufacturer. As such, Haier has
been able to assert its brand on a global scale and gain the approval and trust of customers from
different countries and cultures.
In Europe, Haier has established two important tools in order to optimise its ability to listen to and
satisfy customers:
 The European Call Centre allowing technicians to respond to customers at any time and in eight
different languages – German, Spanish, French, Italian, Austrian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Belgian
and English.

The ‘Haier Club’, which was launched in February 2010, enables Internet users to talk about products
and exchange tips and comments. They can also ask technicians or other users’ questions. The
remarks supplied are also a source of inspiration during product improvement and innovation
processes in order to better meet the needs of end users.

The JC-160GDD wine cellar: two separate compartments,
for wine that’s always at the right temperature
With two temperature zones, adjustable between +4°C and
+18°C, this wine cellar is the practical solution for ageing wine
in the best conditions, and storing it at an optimum

the centre of the unit. In order to ensure internal conditions
are not altered by external light, and do not alter the
organoleptic properties of the wine, Haier has adorned the
JC-160GDD with an anti-UV glass door. Whilst a fan allows
the correct distribution of the temperature, a charcoal filter

Glossary
ABT
Special protective antibacterial treatment developed by Haier. The ABT treatment is applied on the door seal
and detergent drawer from the moment the washing machine is manufactured. It kills bacteria for the lifetime of
the machine, with no need for specific maintenance work to be carried out.
Aqua Sensor
The AquaSensor system checks the water and detects the slightest amount of dirt, fat residue or cleaning
products. It manages the cleaning programme and continually adapts the water supply accordingly. As such,
dishes are always sparkling clean. In addition, AquaSensor also noticeably reduces water consumption when
dishes are not very dirty.
Aquastop
Early warning safety system which controls water leaks. Whether it is a leak in the fill hose or the appliance
itself, all eventualities are covered – via a safety valve on the water tap, a fill pipe with automatic pressure
discharge and an extra safety sleeve, or a cistern with a float switch and drain pump which engages
automatically.
Energy efficiency
The energetic efficiency of an appliance is evaluated in terms of an energy efficiency rating from A to G. Class
A is optimally efficient and G the least efficient. Labels also supply the customer with extra information, helping
them to make a choice between different models.
Energetic
efficiency (Cooling)
Compared with class A refrigerators and freezers, class A+ appliances enable an energy saving of 25%,
whereas class A++ appliances enable a saving of 50%.
Climatic class
The climatic class indicates the ambient temperatures in which an appliance functions at its best: ** climatic
class SN: from +10°C to +32°C ** climatic class N: from +16°C to +32°C ** climatic class ST: from +18°C to
+38°C ** climatic class T: from +18°C to +43°C.
Multi-flow column
This creates a uniform circulation of the air inside a refrigerator, ensuring a total absence of frost, thus
preserving the freshness and flavours of the food.
Time delay
Depending on the model, the start of a programme can be scheduled up to 24 hours in advance if desired. A
display indicates the time remaining until the end of the programme.
LED touch screen
Enables a refrigerator’s functions to be controlled simply by touching the screen.
TFT touch screen
Enables video and speech messages to be left for family members (video-memo function) and to control the
refrigerator’s functions simply by touching the screen.
Rapid cooling
function
Thanks to the simultaneous activation of cooling and ventilation, the refrigerator’s temperature drops very
quickly in order to better preserve food. Very useful after shopping, when the refrigerator door stays open for a
long time.
Holiday function
Enables the refrigerator to be left on at a fairly low temperature in order to save energy whilst away on holiday.
Also avoids the build up of mould and bad smells.
Static cold
This is the way cold air is distributed in older fridges. Air circulation takes place naturally. Cold air drops while
warm air rises. With this type of cold air, the temperature inside the fridge is not homogenised, so users have to
organise the storage in their refrigerator differently to best preserve food. The advantage of this type of system
is that is consumes less energy.
Ventilated cooling
Cold air is distributed inside the refrigerator using a ventilator. This enables better homogenisation of the cold
air, allowing for a more rapid cooling of food items. In addition, as opposed to static cold systems, where food
storage must be organised according to how long an item will keep, the air moving system enables you to
arrange food as you wish.
If your refrigerator door is opened, the temperature will return to the correct level more quickly than with a static
cold system.
Ventilated cold or
No Frost
The cold air is injected into the refrigerator in a homogenised fashion using a turbine that removes the air’s
moisture. The cold air inside the refrigerator is continually renewed, contrary to the air moving system, with
food able to be preserved for much longer periods.
The total absence of frost is guaranteed, thus preserving all the freshness and flavours of the food and
avoiding the chore of defrosting the freezer.
