Following a customer complaint and to emphasise the importance the company placed on quality, Mr. Zhang lined up the faulty models on the factory floor and proceeded to smash them with a sledgehammer. Those responsible for the products were invited to do the same. ''There is no A, B, C, or D quality,” he said at the time. ''There's only acceptable and unacceptable.'' The factory has since grown to become what is now known as the Haier Group, China's leading home appliance manufacturer, one of the country’s most admired companies and one of the most respectable brands worldwide. The group has forged the identity of the city of Qingdao (in the Shandong Province) in its own image – the company is omnipresent, with an avenue named after it, a technology park and a museum of science and technology. Haier’s international reputation has continually improved over the last 30 years. 19 of the company’s products, including refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, televisions, water heaters, personal computers, mobile phones and kitchen appliances, have been ranked among the “Top Brands” in China and the Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has rated Haier’s refrigerators and washing machines among the “Top Global Brands” in China. With a presence mainly in Asia (70% of sales) up until 2000, Haier decided to gain a strong foothold in Europe and opened a subsidiary, locating its headquarters in Varese, Italy. Today, the group is present in more than 30 European countries, and relocated its European headquarters to Paris, France in 2010, whilst keeping a support structure in Varese, Italy. Thanks to CEO, Zhang Ruimin’s brand strategy, Haier was named the world’s number one white goods manufacturer in 2009 (according to statistics from Euromonitor based on volume market share per brand). Haier has confirmed its global position by retaining the title for five years in a row. Haier has evolved as a result of its three phases of ‘brand building’, ‘diversification’ and ‘globalisation’, and since 2005 has entered into its fourth phase of development. The Haier Group is convinced that the key to successful globalisation is successful localisation. In other words, the establishment of a “Three-in-One” operational structure that brings together design, production and marketing as close to the sales territory as possible. This means using local employees and financial resources to fully integrate the group into the country it is working in and cooperating with. As part of its commitment to increase customer interaction, Haier has embraced a ‘networking strategy’ for the development of a connected enterprise. With a design centre in Los Angeles, a marketing centre in New York, and a manufacturing facility in South Carolina, Haier establishes its first international Three-in-One operational framework. In March 2000, the South Carolina facility produces the first USmade Haier refrigerator. Haier’s CEO, Zhang Ruimin, is invited to lecture at Harvard Business School on the concept of “Activate Shocked Fish,” a Haier corporate strategy that maximises a merged company’s latent or underused potential. Subsequently, the University of Southern California, the IMD in Switzerland, INSEAD in France and Kobe University in Japan, conduct research on Haier’s “OEC” management model, its “market chain” management system and its “individuals and goals” concept. Haier’s “market chain” management system has also been added to the European Union’s case study database. 1997 Haier is the first Chinese home appliance manufacturer to achieve ISO14001 certification for environmental management. Haier passes QC08000 Hazardous Substances Process Management certification and the European Union’s RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) certification. 1993 Qingdao Haier (600690) is listed on the Shanghai stock exchange. 1992 Haier achieves ISO9001 certification - the first Chinese White goods manufacturer to do so. 1991 Haier acquires the Qingdao freezer and air conditioner factories, forming a new entity, the Haier Group, and signaling Haier’s entry into its diversification phase. 1990 Haier’s products gain UL certification for standards and safety issued by Underwriters Laboratories. It also receives product certification from a number of renowned accreditation agencies including Intertek Foreign Trade Standards, UL, Technischer Überwachungs Verein in Germany, Japan Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories, Canadian Standards Association, LGA, Korean Testing Laboratories, China Quality Certification Centre, Prufstelle Testing and Certification Institute in Germany, and the Laboratoire Central des Industries Electriques (LCIE) in France. December Zhang Ruimin is appointed director of the Qingdao Refrigerator Factory, a factory which at the time had a deficit of approximately 150,000 RMB. 1984 Glossary ABT Special protective antibacterial treatment developed by Haier. The ABT treatment is applied on the door seal and detergent drawer from the moment the washing machine is manufactured. It kills bacteria for the lifetime of the machine, with no need for specific maintenance work to be carried out. Aqua Sensor The AquaSensor system checks the water and detects the slightest amount of dirt, fat residue or cleaning products. It manages the cleaning programme and continually adapts the water supply accordingly. As such, dishes are always sparkling clean. In addition, AquaSensor also noticeably reduces water consumption when dishes are not very dirty. Aquastop Early warning safety system which controls water leaks. Whether it is a leak in the fill hose or the appliance itself, all eventualities are covered – via a safety valve on the water tap, a fill pipe with automatic pressure discharge and an extra safety sleeve, or a cistern with a float switch and drain pump which engages automatically. Energy efficiency The energetic efficiency of an appliance is evaluated in terms of an energy efficiency rating from A to G. Class A is optimally efficient and G the least efficient. Labels also supply the customer with extra information, helping them to make a choice between different models. Energetic efficiency (Cooling) Compared with class A refrigerators and freezers, class A+ appliances enable an energy saving of 25%, whereas class A++ appliances enable a saving of 50%. Climatic class The climatic class indicates the ambient temperatures in which an appliance functions at its best: ** climatic class SN: from +10°C to +32°C ** climatic class N: from +16°C to +32°C ** climatic class ST: from +18°C to +38°C ** climatic class T: from +18°C to +43°C. Multi-flow column This creates a uniform circulation of the air inside a refrigerator, ensuring a total absence of frost, thus preserving the freshness and flavours of the food. Time delay Depending on the model, the start of a programme can be scheduled up to 24 hours in advance if desired. A display indicates the time remaining until the end of the programme. LED touch screen Enables a refrigerator’s functions to be controlled simply by touching the screen. TFT touch screen Enables video and speech messages to be left for family members (video-memo function) and to control the refrigerator’s functions simply by touching the screen. Rapid cooling function Thanks to the simultaneous activation of cooling and ventilation, the refrigerator’s temperature drops very quickly in order to better preserve food. Very useful after shopping, when the refrigerator door stays open for a long time. Holiday function Enables the refrigerator to be left on at a fairly low temperature in order to save energy whilst away on holiday. Also avoids the build up of mould and bad smells. Static cold This is the way cold air is distributed in older fridges. Air circulation takes place naturally. Cold air drops while warm air rises. With this type of cold air, the temperature inside the fridge is not homogenised, so users have to organise the storage in their refrigerator differently to best preserve food. The advantage of this type of system is that is consumes less energy. Ventilated cooling Cold air is distributed inside the refrigerator using a ventilator. This enables better homogenisation of the cold air, allowing for a more rapid cooling of food items. In addition, as opposed to static cold systems, where food storage must be organised according to how long an item will keep, the air moving system enables you to arrange food as you wish. If your refrigerator door is opened, the temperature will return to the correct level more quickly than with a static cold system. Ventilated cold or No Frost The cold air is injected into the refrigerator in a homogenised fashion using a turbine that removes the air’s moisture. The cold air inside the refrigerator is continually renewed, contrary to the air moving system, with food able to be preserved for much longer periods. The total absence of frost is guaranteed, thus preserving all the freshness and flavours of the food and avoiding the chore of defrosting the freezer.
