betting racket
busted
Lead Story
Control centre suspected to be outside the state

W
ith cricket crazy fans frenziedly supporting their
respective teams in the
World Cup 2015, the betting business
has also seen an increase across the
country, with Guwahati not lagging
behind. This came to light during the
India – Bangladesh match when the
city police busted a betting racket in
Guwahati, arresting three people, two
of who were bookies taking bets from
people.
The arrest
On Thursday, City Police Crime
Branch and Dispur Police jointly
raided a house in an apartment at Jatia
in Kahilipara area and arrested three
persons— Pawan Maheswari, Rajiv Jain and Rajesh Sharma. A senior
police official said, “We received specific inputs from sources about such
illegal activity being carried out in the
city and we formed a team to bust the
racket.” A case has been registered in
Dispur Police Station (case number
– 523/15 under section 14/17 of Assam Gaming and Betting Act and also
under section 66(A) of Information
Technology Act). According to police,
an LED television, 12 mobile phones
and a list of people’s names were also
recovered from the arrested accused.
The nexus
According to police, after initial
investigation, they came to know that
the trio are originally from Rajasthan
and most of their customers are from
outside Assam. The police said, “Two
of the arrested persons are bookies whereas one is their accomplice.”
Highly placed sources in the police
told G Plus that betting does happens
in Guwahati during big events like IPL
and World Cup but only behind closed
doors and police hardly get information about such activities. The police
can act against such illegal activities
only when they get specific inputs. The
police also said that there is a limited
circle within which the betting game
takes place and the main centre of the
game is known to be operating from
outside Assam according to preliminary investigation. As the investigation is on and with police recovering
the list of the names of the customers,
the people from Guwahati involved in
the racket will also be known soon.
The process
According to a person who used
to bet before, while talking to G Plus
on the condition of anonymity, the
main betting market works in a chain.
For example, when a school student
places a bet, he places it with a small
time bookie. The bookie further places
the same bet to a bookie who is better connected with the bookie based
outside the state. Similarly, a chain
of bookies are tied from Guwahati to
Dubai, who together run the business.
The ‘punters’ are never in touch with
the bosses. The process is simple as
people just have to call the bookies or
even place their bet over the internet
as there are some websites too where
betting happens. The flow of the money happens within the punter and the
bookie. The bookie further does the
transaction with the bookie based in
a different state through hawala. Hawala, also known as hundi, is an informal value transfer system . Hawala is
the main form of money laundering
business running across the country
and also outside. A huge amount of
black money gets transferred through
hawala from small towns to big cities
and then outside the country. The betting business entirely runs on hawala.
The business is entirely illegal and
the money earned by the punters or
the bookies are totally black, and gets
transferred to different countries. The
black money may then be used for
According to police,

various activities, including funding
terrorist activities. Basically the entire
betting business is a chain of transferring black money.
Odds and even
There are different ways of betting
during different events. There are some
bets considered as even when the returns are assured as the same amount
of money invested, for example if
someone invests Rs 100 in a team and
the team wins than the punter (a person who places the bet) will get double
the amount invested i.e. Rs 200. So, the
money received is always even. There
are also some odd ways of betting and
the process is known as odds. The risk
of losing is more as till the end of the
game or the event, the team the punter
bets on have a big chance of losing. So,
the returns are huge in the odd betting.
If someone is investing Rs 100, he/she
has the chances of winning Rs 1000 or
even more. The rates are fixed by the
bookies and the odd betting rates are
usually fixed outside the country, usually in Dubai or Malaysia. According
to betting industry sources, the Indian
betting market is mostly dominated by
people from South India and Gujarat.
According to sources, there are
shops were hawala happens in every
small town in the entire north east
region and all the towns are linked to
Guwahati and the city is now the hub
for the north-eastern betting business
racket. Guwahati is further linked
with other states in the country. But
with the recent bust of the city’s betting racket, people who are involved
in the business in Guwahati during
big events will be under scrutiny and
places which are used as the point of
sale for such activities will further may
have to shift the base.

GMCH needs improvement
being the largest Medical College
Juthika BARUAH
The Guwahati Medical College
Hospital (GMCH), the largest medical
college in the state, has not been able
to meet the expectations of the people
who come for treatment at the hospital
from across the state.
The patients waiting for long in
queues for registering their names to
consult the doctors alleged that the
facilities are not up to the mark. “We
come here for better treatment as we
can’t afford to go to the private hospitals but here also we have to face many
problems. The medicines are not available in the government pharmacy of
the hospital for which medicines are
to be brought from outside which
costs more,” said Kusum Das from
Nalbari who came for treatment at the
GMCH.
The Superintendent of GMCH,
Dr. Ramen Talukdar, while speaking
to G Plus said that sometimes there
is unavailability of medicine due to
non-supply and budget problem and
it’s impossible to find all the medicines
in the pharmacy. It’s not only in the
Government hospitals but in all the
pharmacies, be it the hospital pharmacy or other, all types of medicines
are not available. Sometimes there is a
problem but otherwise medicines are
available.
Another patient, Prasanna Pathak
from Morigaon who had undergone
tumour surgery said that the registration at the hospital is Rs. 5 but other
than this, the other facilities should
be there. Being a hospital it should
be clean as lakhs of patients come for
treatment from across the state and
unhygienic environment cause infections.
The Kamrup District Administration has also decided to adopt a
comprehensive development plan to
upgrade the hospital as the infrastructure is not developed as expected. The
plan which will focus on cleanliness
and patient friendly facilities has not
yet started and the patient also alleged
that till date no such initiative has
been taken.
Deepa Deka, one of the patients’
relative said that the hospital is not
at all clean. The toilets can’t be used
as there is no water facility and it’s so
dirty that one will have to think twice
before using it. “I agree that many people come from across the state to this
hospital and use the toilets but the authority need to maintain such things
by appointing adequate number of
cleaning crew. Generally people who
can’t afford to go to private hospitals
come to government hospitals but
when they find it to be unhealthy, it
becomes difficult to come for the second time. Only treatment doesn’t matter but there should be other facilities
for the patients,” said Deka.
The administration assured that
they would conduct a survey on the
pharmacies located inside the hospital
campus whether they have licenses or
not and said that the parking places
for trekkers will be shifted to clear the
hospital entrance but it has not been
done yet because of which traffic jams
are created outside the hospital gate.
A vending zone was about to be
made operative from January 20 but
has not been done, which creates
trouble for the vehicles, especially the
ambulance entering the hospital. The
vendors create problem by sitting over
the road for their business which become troublesome for the hospital.
“The hospital wards are not clean
and system of fine should be imposed
in order to keep the campus clean.
There are some people who spit in and
around the campus and do not know
the use of some things and therefore
fine should be taken. Only then the
people will be concerned about the
cleanliness of the hospital. Hospital needs to be clean and hygienic as
there are various types of patients and
there is also record of patients dying
of infection. Therefore, cleanliness is a
major factor in a hospital and as some
people who don’t know the use of such
things should be taken care of by the
staff of the hospital. Separate staff
should be appointed to look after such
things,” said Manju Das.

Artistes for ending
Bihu functions early
Juthika BARUAH
W
ith the Rongali Bihu round
the corner, Bihu committees’ are busy preparing for
the Bihu functions but artistes want
the functions to wind up early in the
best interest for themselves as well as
the Bihu committees’ and the public.
As the main attractions of the
functions are kept under warps till the
last moment, the public as well as the
artistes themselves have to face problems. “Although the time is fixed well
ahead for the artists to perform at the
functions but sometimes, the timetable cannot be maintained. Though
people have the best intentions, artists,
public or the committees’ itself often
face unforeseen problems. Sometimes,
it is an inclement weather which affect
the functions and the artists themselves cannot give their best in such
situations which feels awkward as
we cannot fulfil the expectations of
the people, after they wait for long to
watch their favourite artists perform,”
said Singer Tarali Sarma while speaking to G Plus.
She said that if the main programmes are kept within 9 pm to 12
am, it would be convenient for the
public, artistes and the committees as
well.
Singer Priyanka Bharali said that
the primary responsibility of winding
up the function early should be of the
district administration. The administration should strictly instruct the
committees’ to wind up the function
within 12 am and if any committee violates that rule, legal action should be
taken. Only then it would be possible
to conduct the function early.
“Although the committees want to
finish the functions early but it is often
the people who come late to watch the
Bihu functions. The public comes after
9 pm or 10 pm after having their dinner. Therefore, the committees have to
wait which is also a problem for the
artists. The main cause of accidents
after late night shows is that after returning from the shows, drivers feel
sleepy for which the accident occurs.
It is not that all people consume alcohol and drive. It is also due to the late
night shows that many accidents occur. There are some people who come
all the way to watch functions and
they want to return back home after it
ends. Also there are groups of people
who try to create untoward situations
during the functions and sully the festive environment, which affects our
performance.”
She added that the administration
should strictly instruct committees to
observe such rules and the people too
should cooperate with them for a successful function.
Bihu Committee’s view
“The primary
responsibility
of winding up
the function
early should be
of the district
administration.
The administration
should strictly
instruct the
committees’
to wind up the
function within
12 am and if any
committee violates
that rule, legal
action should be
taken. Only then it
would be possible
to conduct the
function early.”
Priyanka Bharali
Singer
Latasil Bihu Sanmela
Nilopam Das, President of Latasil Bihu Sanmelan said, “We want to
finish off the programme as early as
possible and we make schedule from
3 pm to 12 am but sometimes the
time schedule cannot be maintained
as it takes times in fitting the musical
instruments of the singers but otherwise, the time can be maintained.
“This year we are not getting enough
sponsorship and therefore, we have
not called any of the more popular
artists. We emphasize mainly on the
festival to ensure folk culture could be
taken outside the state and country so
that the people could become aware
of the Assamese culture and tradition. Krishnamoni Chutia and Simanta Sekhar are the attraction this year
and on the last day, that is on April 17,
Bihu Samragi competition will be organized,” said Das.
West Guwahati Bihu
Sanmelan
President Rubul Kalita said that
they try to maintain the time to their
best and it can exceed to a maximum
of 1 am to 2 am. This year the attractions will be Priyanka Bharali, Babu
and Manash Robin, besides a competition of Bihu Konwari. The first winner will be given a reward of Rs. 1.5
lakhs, the second winner will be given
Rs 1 lakh while the third winner will
be given Rs 75,000. Other than these,
there will be other programmes which
will have performances from all the
ethnic tribes of the state.
Chandmari Bihu
Sanmelan
It is not possible to wind up the
programmes by 12 am as there are
many programmes scheduled and it
is difficult to manage as the people also
come late to watch the programmes as
the main attraction is given after 9 pm
or 10 pm.
New Guwahati Bihu
Sanmelan
Publicity Secretary Pradip Kalita
said “It is good if we can finish the programme early and our programmes finish at around 1 am. If it exceeds the time
schedule, the committee and public have
to face problems as sometimes, many
young boys create an awkward situation
by consuming alcohol which affects the
festive environment and we do not want
the public to be harassed by such situations. The main artists will perform at
around 8.30 pm and 10 pm. Mukoli Bihu,
Zeng Bihu and other competitions will be
there and modern song competition has
been arranged for the young generation.

Women from
weaker section
more vulnerable to gender crime
Juthika BARUAH
G
irls and women especially
from the weaker section
of the society are increasingly becoming vulnerable to crime
against them and although there are
laws against such crimes, awareness
is necessary to ensure this largely illiterate section can stand up for their
rights.
Although awareness on crime
against women has been created to a
large extent in several other aspects,
they continue to be harassed sexually
at work place, especially, in the unorganized sector, for which the Sexual
Harassment of Women at Workplace
(Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013 came into force on 22nd
April, 2013. “The Indian women were
empowered late while the European
women were empowered earlier. In
India, the judicial laws are not in favour of women and from 1997-2010
nothing has been changed and with
the changing government, women issue has never been a priority in the
country,” said Advocate of Gauhati
High Court Debojit Das.
Some of the conditions
to be fulfilled under the
Sexual Harassment Act
are:
• The incident(s) happened in a
workplace
• It should be sexual in natureT h e
incident/act must be unwelcomed
by the employee.
The unorganized sector has been
brought under purview which is the
most vulnerable according to the
act. The Act has created a very wide
net and thus the term ‘workplace’
includes government bodies, private
and public sector organisations, nongovernmental organizations, educational institutions, entertainment industry, hospitals and nursing homes,
sports institutions and stadiums etc.
Workplace also covers places visited
by employees during the course of
employment or for reasons arising
out of employment including transportation provided by the employer
for the purpose of commuting to and
from the place of employment.
The Act envisions two types of
Complaint Committees- Internal
Complaints Committee (ICC) and
Local Complaint Committee (LCC).
The ICC is to be constituted by the
employer of a workplace having more
than 10 workers and LCC constituted
by the District Officer for considering
the cases of employee of a workplace
with less than 10 workers or when the
complaint is against the employer.
Consequence of noncompliance with any
of the provisions of the
Act by an employer is
• Liable to a fine of `50000 in case
of violation of duties (1st offence)
• In subsequent violations the
amount of fine will be doubled
• It may also lead to cancellation of
license and withdrawal of the registration required for carrying out
his activity.
Consequence of False
Complaint:
• If complaint is false with malicious
intent, the complainant can be penalized as per the Service Rules.
However, an enquiry must be conducted prior to establishing malicious intent. It is to be understood
that mere inability to prove the
case will not attract penalty and is
not to be presumed to be malicious
intent.
Advocate Das said that there is
no amendment in the Service Rule
in the state of Assam and the private
sectors do not have a complaint committee.
Crime against women like rape,
sexual harassment, acid attacks are
the most heinous and there are laws
to prevent such crimes but as most
of the people of the weaker section
are illiterate, these crimes seems to
be more against them. Prior to the

for an acid violence was covered by
Sections 320, 324, 325 and 326 of the
Indian Penal Code.
Section 320 of the India Penal
Code defines grievous hurt to mean,
amongst others, a hurt which causes
permanent disfiguration of the head
or face or a hurt which causes the
sufferer to be in a severe bodily pain
for 20 days or more. Section 325 prescribes a punishment of imprisonment up to 7 years and fine for voluntarily causing grievous hurt and
Section 326 prescribes a punishment
for imprisonment of life or imprisonment up to 10 years and fine for
voluntarily causing grievous hurt by
means of, amongst others any heated
substance or any corrosive substance.
Senior Advocate of Gauhati High
Court Achintya Malla Bujor Barua
said that awareness should also be
created to ban the acid attack as many
people are unaware of the laws and it
should be investigated whether the
Assam State Government followed
the guidelines of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has directed the
Chief Secretaries of the State and Union Territories to ensure the compliance of the following directions:
• Over the counter sale of acid is
completely prohibited unless the
seller maintains a log/register recording the sale of acid which will
contain the details of the preson to
whom acid is sold and the quantity
sold. The log/register shall contain
the address of the person to whom
it is sold.
• All sellers that sell acid only after
the buyer has shown photo ID issued by the Government which
also has the address of the person,
specifies the reason/purpose of
procuring acid
• All stocks of acid must be declared
by the seller with the concerned
Sub-Divisional magistrate within
15 days
• No acid shall be sold to any person
who is below 18 years of age
• In case of undeclared stock of acid,
it will be open to the concerned
sub divisional magistrate to confiscate the stock and suitably impose
fine on such seller up to `50000.
If the guidelines be strictly followed, the acid attack can be prevented and the authorities in the public
interest should strictly implement the
same and in the process save the prospective victims from an acid violence.
Crime against women is rising
day by day and Assam has witnessed
highest number of crimes among the
North Eastern states. Human Rights
Law Network, Guwahati Chapter has
solved more than 300 cases till date
since 2008.

Two more H1N1 cases
detected in GHY
CHINTU DAS
K
amrup (metro) district along
with the city is reporting the
maximum number of H1N1
confirmed positive cases in the state
with two more new positive cases
emerging in the last 24 hours. Till
March 16, the total number of cases
from the district was at five.
Two women, aged 28 and 35
reportedly tested positive for H1N1
on Tuesday and presently are being treated at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital and at a private
hospital respectively. One confirmed
case was from Beharbari locality in
the city and another from Dispur in
the heart of the city.
In the last week of February, a 50
year old businessman from the city
who had returned from Allahabad,
was found to be positive with H1N1.
Last week, a woman in her fifties
who also returned from Rajasthan
was also found positive with H1N1.
She was at first admitted at the Central NF Railway Hospital. But her
testing was done at a private laboratory.
With the two new cases, the
total number of confirmed positive cases in the district has reached
seven. The total number of positive
cases pan Assam has reached 18 as
on Wednesday. Till now, two from
Jorhat district have already succumbed to the disease as the two
had prior critical health conditions
like diabetes, hypertension and high
blood pressure.
The district wise break-up of the
total number of positive cases are as
follows: Kamrup (metro) with seven,
T
Dibrugarh and Jorhat districts with
four and three reported cases.
“The situation is being monitored
on a daily basis. The people need
not be alarmed. The two new cases
were reported from Kamrup (metro)
district. Both the positive cases are
women,” said BC Bhagawati, of the
Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and state nodal officer.
Joint director of health from Kamrup (metro) district, Ganesh Saikia
said the total number of increasing
cases from the district was due to its
location as a transit point as the district with the city as its centrefold witnesses the arrival of hundreds of people from different parts of the country
on a daily basis.
But Saikia ruled out setting up of
screening facilities at railway and bus
stations stating that it would create a
panic situation in the district.
“I urge the people in the district
not to worry. Most of the cases had
travel history. The district is quite large
and it is the gateway to the Northeast. But at the same time, the people
should exercise caution and follow
the simple steps so as to avoid falling
sick,” said Saikia.
Addressing a press conference
on Sunday, health minister Nazrul
Islam urged the people in the state
not to press the panic button and
asked them to understand the different variations of the disease. Islam
on the same day also announced
an awareness drive across the state
about H1N1.
“There is no need to worry and
the people shouldn’t panic. There is a
fear psychosis prevailing in the state.
We will be putting on the awareness
drive within a short time. Normal
people with a healthy immune system need not worry. Those who have
complicated conditions like respiratory problems, chest pain, liver and
kidney problems, people with cancer
and HIV positive only need to exercise caution,” said Islam on Sunday.
The forgotten game

caught in a frenzy with World

a game which was almost forgotten
– Lagori. Assam Lagori Association
(ALA) is preparing to take part in
its maiden World Cup to be held in
Mumbai later this year where more
than 30 nations will take part.
For someone like Ashima Begum, a city student, it can give her
opportunity to explore more. “We
are happy to take part in this training and workshop. It will not just
boost up our confidence but also
enhance our ability to play the game
in a better way. It’s interesting and
we are learning the rules,” an elated
Ashima said during a training session at Geeta Nagar High School
playground.

“It’s a game with a pretty long history, dating back to the ages of Geeta.
Lord Srikrishna used to play the game
as mentioned in the Geeta. We went to
every corner of the country and found
that Lagori is played almost everywhere

players across the country to represent
the nation during the maiden world
cup of lagori which is scheduled to be
held in Mumbai later this year.
“Even the parents would love to
see their kids play the game which
they used to play during their childhood. It is also helpful for the children
for their physical fitness but at a lesser
cost. Now, I feel this game has a future,”
Gurav added.
ALA is conducting such training
camps across the state in the next several months before selecting the Assam
team. ALA general secretary Parag
Sharma said that the participation has
been extremely encouraging.
Lagori, also known as Seven Stone,
is played by two teams in an unlimited
area. A member of one team (the seekers) throws a soft ball at a pile of stones
to knock them over. Then the seekers
try to restore the pile of stones while
the opposing team (the hitters) throws
the ball at them. If the ball touches a
seeker, he is out and his team continues
without him. But a team member can
always safeguard himself by touching
the opposite team member before the
ball hits him.
ALA vice president Rituraj Bhagawati said that a workshop for referees

is a very interesting game with minimum cost. It is likely to be the most
popular traditional game in India very

he first Assamese film ‘Joymoti’, which was released on
10 March, 1935 has completed
its 80 years. The pioneer film, made
by the legendry film maker, musician,
writer Rupkowar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala was first shown at Raunak theatre
of Calcutta on 10 March and in Assam
it was exhibited first at Kamrup Natya
Mandir (presently known as Kumar
Bhaskar natya Mandir) on March 20.
To observe the 80 years of ‘Joymoti’, Assamese magazine Dish (pronounced as Dihkh), with the support
of voluntary organisation Vande had
organized a special programme on
March 10 at Kumar Bhaskar Natya
Mandir. At a time when the government and all the other film organizations have almost forgotten to give
honour to the film, Dish initiated this
humble effort to remember the first
film and give support to the entire film
industry. That is why, it has decided to
celebrate the release date of Jaymoti,
that is, March 10 as “Asom Chalachitra
Divas” every year.
This year, the celebration was
simple but meaningful and it was
done without any huge publicity and
glamour. Noted film critic and the
man behind the rediscovering of Joy-
moti, Altaf Mazid and secretary of
Asom Sahitya Sabha and senior film
critic Chandan Sarma attended the
occasion as chief guests and speakers. They delivered some thoughtful
speech regarding Joymoti and Assamese film as a whole. There was
an interaction session also where
the audience also participated and
shared their views.
There was also an open quiz
on Assamese film conducted by
Dipankar Kaushik where around
50 participants from different age
group and professions participated.
Finally the film Joymoti, which
was reconstructed by Altaf Mazid
from the remaining of the original
was screened. The present film is of
58 minutes duration. The audience,
who came from different parts of
the city to see the cultural heritage
of the state, were mesmerized by
the great creation of Jyoti Prasad
Agarwala.
Hriday Ananda, editor of Dish
requested all Assamese people and
social or cultural organisation to
celebrate this day as “Asom Chalachitra Divas” in their own ways to
encourage the Assamese film and
develop the industry.

City consultation on
ground water
contamination
calls for a more centralised effort
ADITYA GOGOI
A
three day programme on Consultation on Resource Centre
for Water Health Problems in
Assam held in the city has sought a
fact finding mission on ways to combat the problem pan Assam.
Organised by Gujarat based INREM Foundation- Fluoride Knowledge and Action Network and Arsenic
Knowledge and Action Network from
Hyderabad, participants from some
of the severely affected districts in the
state spoke about the effects of such
contamination.
A serious health risk is in the offing for the denizens of the city due
to groundwater contamination from
fluoride and arsenic that is being reported from various parts of the city.
As per the revelations of a study
conducted last year, there is an urgent
need for timely action before a severe
heath crises plagues denizens of the
city. The testing was an undertaking
of Anto Daya, an offshoot cell of the
BJP. Samples were collected from nine
localities in the city in the first phase.
4,123 samples were collected.
As per findings, out of the total
120 samples collected for fluoride
testing, 21 samples were found to be
fluoride contaminated. The standard
level of fluoride in water is 1mg/litre
but after testing it was to be found that
the presence was 1.6 mg/litre. In Panjabari, as per samples collected, seven
places in that locality were the most
affected with fluoride.
Of the another 120 samples collected for arsenic testing, five samples

were found to be contaminated with
the dangerous element. Arsenic is a
natural element that is found in the
earth’s crust. The standard level of its
presence in water should be 0.01 mg/
litre but after testing it was found that
the contamination level was at 0.21
mg/litre. Bonda and Lal Ganesh areas

are most affected with arsenic contamination.
With groundwater across nine
districts in Assam and another 19 affected by fluoride and arsenic contamination, experts working on water
contamination on Tuesday called for
a centralised resource centre in the
state for greater pooling of resources
through information dissemination
on groundwater contamination.
For example, a survey report of the
National Programme for Prevention
and Control of Fluorosis (NPPCF)
conducted across Kamrup district in
the course of the last two years found
that out of the 13 schools covered for
the survey, 343 children were found to
be affected by dental Fluorosis.
86 children were confirmed to be
affected with dental Fluorosis. A total
number of 921 children were surveyed
in 2012-13 and again from April 2013
to December 2013. The NPPCF survey
also included 234 numbers of urinary
tests that were carried out amongst the
school children with suspected dental
Fluorosis.
The consultation laid emphasis for
a collective approach through centralised information sharing mechanism
and data compilation with concrete
output. Participants also expressed
apprehension that arsenic contamination has not been properly detected
in some of the places in Assam even
with a plethora of research, mostly
indvidually based, done on arsenic
contamination, the studies were not
shared and generated.
“It is a serious issue that needs to
be addressed at the earliest. But it is
being seen that there is a lackadaisical approach from all fronts to tackle
the issue. It requires a feasible approach inclusive of a proper study of
the geography. I have witnessed what
a prolonged exposure to fluoride does
to a human body, said AB Paul, retired
chief engineer PHED, and crusader
against fluoride contamination in Assam.
Participants chalked out measures
that could be used as policy planning
by the state government in tackling
the issue. An epidemiological survey
in the infected places, mass awareness
about the issue, monitor and integrating the works by stakeholders, providing assistance to the victims of contamination and others were discussed.
“Our endeavour is to see Assam as
a Fluorosis and arsenicosis free-state
before it is too late. For this we have
launched a campaign, ‘Unite for water- Unite for Assam’ and have already
conducted a field study along with
noted experts in the field and PHED
Officials in some Fluorosis pockets,”
said Vikas Ratanjee, policy advocacy
and communication manager, Fluoride Network.
Extreme or high or usage of fluoride contaminated water can cause
fluorosis, an afflicted bone disease.
Fluorosis endemic is a reality across
20 states in India and in Assam, four
districts (Kamrup, Karbi Anglong,
Nagaon and Goalpara) are in the grip
of it. Of lately more such cases are being reported from many localities of
the city.

RISING from THE
ruins
R’jwathri ashram puts
itself back in form
KALYAN DEB
T
he Temple Ghat in Pandu
at Guwahati is dotted with
shrines, temples and ashrams
of historic era and located just above
on a hill lies the temple, which is the
tranquil Ashram of Om Baba. There
is an inexplicable feeling of calmness
in this ashram. A small hut where Om
Baba used to live is nestled amidst
dense trees and rocks overseeing the
river Brahmaputra as it runs on the
northern foothills of the ashram. The
chirping of different types of birds
throughout the day fills one’s heart
with joy.
Om Baba, an accomplice of Rishi Aurobindo was acquitted in the
Alipore Bomb Blast case in Calcutta in
revolt against the British Government
and later retired to this hill where he
underwent meditation (Tapasya).
Many from that revolutionary group
later led cloistered lives. His wife too
lived the life of a spiritualist besides his
two sons who took to monkhood. Om
Baba named his ashram, R’jwathri,
‘R’jwa’ meaning upward, tall, where
one can reach the higher realms and
‘thri’ meaning hills.
Swami Purnabratananda Maharaj
of Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS),
Shillong who is taking care of the
R’jwathri ashram since the year 2010
said, “The greatness of Om Baba can
be gauged from this apt name.”
Existence of
R’jwathri Ashram
Established in the year 1923 with

Purnabrata is trying to put in place.
This ashram will be developed into a
Vedic Retreat Centre with all spiritual
amenities. The ashram, now a unit of
BSS, will offer spiritual retreat with
Meditation – Yoga Therapy Centre,
Vedic Learning Centre for in-house
children, 300-500 sitting capacity
auditorium for spiritual and cultural
activities, hostel for adivasi poor children, Srimat Swami Pranabananada
Sevaniketan – Free Medical Unit for
the needy among others. For the betterment of aspirants, a boat named
‘Kandari’ will operate from the northern foothills of the ashram connecting
various pilgrimages like Doul Gobindo, Sukrehwar, Umananda located in
various banks of the river. A river ghat
will also be developed on this side to
connect the other sides.
Swami Purnabrata said that they
will name the boat Kandari, meaning
leader after a same boat was used by
BSS founder Swami Pranabananda
along with his monks on a preaching mission in Bangladesh. He used
this boat to reach out to the people of
the country where the numerous low
lands, rivers and canals always remain
submerged in water.
Between the years
2010 and 2012, the
land had to suffer from
difficult situations.
The boundary walls
and the premises
were left in ruins and
property of the ashram
had been damaged
to a large extent. The
entrance was also
demolished and the
walls of the huts were
broken by trespassers.
300 ft high hillock, the land just above
Pandunath temple was initially taken
from the Pandunath temple authority. The land was taken back by the
government in the year 1959 as per
Assam Charitable and Religious Act,
but was again registered in the name
of Khagen Sharma Doloi in 1967 and
was later registered in the name of
J.N.Sanyal member of VIRAJ Trust.
After the demise of Om Baba,
there was no one to look after the ashram. In 1987, Srimat Swami Bangobindo Maharaj from Om Baba Ashram
Trust at Dibrugarh in Assam submitted a proposal to the then Secretary,
Srimat Swami Vikashananda Maharaj, BSS, Kolkata for taking over the
responsibility of R’jwathri Ashram.
Later in 2007, Head of Department,
Sanskrit, Gauhati University, Priyanshu Upadhayay took the initiative of
Brief history about
Pandu
taking care of the ashram. He later
apprised BSS that the hill campus has
been illegally occupied by a number
of religious and educational organizations besides the general public from
all sides.
“Priyanshuji said that we must
take up the responsibility of the ashram or else it cannot be saved,” said
Swami Purnabrata who has recently
been made the member of Om Baba
Ashram Trust.
It was after the demise of Priyanshu Upadhayay in 2010 when the
ashram was completely handed over
to BSS as it had also become a victim
of land encroachment. It was left with
only 7-8 bighas of ashram land that
was previously spread upto an area of
27 bighas.
“Between the years 2010 and
2012, the land had to face difficult sit-
uations. The boundary walls and the
premises were left in ruins and property of the ashram had been damaged
to a large extent. The entrance was also
demolished and the walls of the huts
were broken by trespassers. I also approached the District Commissioner
and several government officials, including enforcement officials as the
struggle was against renowned politicians and public figures, some did
offer their help whereas few denied.”,
said Swami Purnabrata.
“Gradually, the situation has stabilised as we look forward to grow with
several projects in pipeline”, Swami
Purnabrata added.

The name Pandu derives its
name from the Pandavas of Mahabharata fame. The historical name of
this place is Pandunath Village. It is
believed that Lord Vishnu killed two
demons, Madhu and Kaitava, at the
present site of Pandunath Temple
and Varah Avatar of Lord Vishnu has
taken the form of the Pandunath as
a rock.
The scriptures note that in Dwapar Yuga, the Pandavas during their
exile had visited this place and consecrated six idols of Lord Ganesha
with the help of Lord Vishwakarma.
The Pandavas also took a bath here
which is now known as Pandu Ghat
from where the brothers proceeded
to the Holy Shrine of Kamakhya Devi
Temple.
An ideal place for spiritual self
development away from the noise and
pollution of the city, the ashram is
surrounded by Art of Living, Anukul
Thakur Ashram on either side operating on its foothills. The Katia Baba
Ashram is located on the northeastern side on another hill while the
Pandunath Village is on the southern
side. One can reach this ashram from
Maligaon Charali to Temple Ghat in
a shared auto rickshaw followed by a
five minute walk uphill.

he AT Road stretch of road that
extends from Paltanbazar to
Adabari is one of the busiest
roads in the city. Being the only connective road beside NH 37, the city
road is a major way of convenience.
However, the road has been a major cause of havoc as the hassle created
due the ongoing water supply project
by GMDA refuse to die down. The
project operation that took off over
two months ago is still awaiting completion by the local residents and the
passers by of the area. The road, since
the initiation of the project has been a
matter of distress as the unconstructed
road has filled the area with a carpet
of dust and traffic congestion during
peak hours everyday. The project of
installing water pipeline throughout
the area was successfully initiated
but the post-project situation left the
street devastated, turning the conditions from bad to worse for those residing and commuting through this
area. The construction materials such
as stone dust etc. are unloaded on the
roadside itself causing blockage in several parts. Moreover, the water supply
Councilor’s speak
project being still in progress in most
part of the area even after months, as
monsoon gets closer, the same has also
been a reason of concern among the
residents and commuters of the area.
“Prior to the installation of pipeline, the road condition was very
commutable but since GMDA’s ongoing project, the road condition has
worsened as the entire street has been
tempered with during the process and
the authorities remain mum about the
reconstruction of the road”, said Abhijit Chakraborty who owns a shop in
A.T.Road in Maligaon.
“The local residents who have to
suffer the most due to the constant
traffic jams and the poor road condition have collectively forwarded a
complaint to the councilor regard-
ing the construction of the road”,
Chakraborty added.
Another shopkeeper, Anil Nath
who runs a grocery outlet in the same
area complained saying, “The entire
area remains covered with dust during
the day and as at this time of the year it
remains dusty for most part of the day,
the goods in the shop get covered with
a carpet of dust and also get damaged.
The same also is also a major problem
for the passers by and can be seen walking down the road with their mouth and
nose covered.”
“During peak hours, the same is
also a reason for traffic congestion.
Since half of the road has been dug out,
the vehicles can only commute through
the undamaged half of the road, causing
massive traffic jam”, Nath added.
Talking to G Plus, councilor Shyamal Chakrabarty stated, “The authorities have been approached on several occasions for the development of the road but no response has been received as of yet. The entire
Maligaon stretch till Pandu has been in turmoil for the past two years as
the authorities has only promised repair of the road but no initiative or
response has been received.”
“After the installation process, the hydro testing of the installed
pipes were also carried out and but the road remained unconstructed
due to which it remains dusty, which is also unhygienic and could be the
reason for causing sickness”, he added.
Meanwhile, it is after two years of approaching the concerned authorities that the construction of the road from Maligaon Chariali till
Pandu has been initiated. The road condition has been disastrous since
the past four years and even after being a business hub of the area, had
been disregarded by the authorities.
“It is since the past two years that the authorities have been approached and only in the recent time have responded. The process,
meanwhile, is very slow and only the road divider has been constructed
yet and is said to be completed within a period of one week”, the councilor added.

The F&B industry in Guwahati has grown exponentially
over the course of time. This robust growth has been made possible by
variety of factors which include opening of national and international food chains and changing consumer expectations. Acknowledging
the vitality and growth of the sector, GPlus conceptualized Guwahati

The event
According to organisers, in spite of it being the maiden edition, the Guwahati Food Awards 2015 received overwhelming response from the industry.
The organisers said that it was not that easy to organise such an event for the
first time in Guwahati. The process started with entry calling for the competition in the month of February and the last date to submit the application was
February 14th. Some joints missed the last date and requested the organisers
to extend the last date which was thereafter extended to February 18th. Finally
150 contestants participated in the awards and out of which 65 participants
were selected for various categories. There were approximately 20 categories
in various genres. The voting process started from 24th February and people
voted till 5th March which was the last date. Over 20,000 people voted for
their favourite food joints through social networking sites like Facebook, mobile applications, food award website etc. There were also jury members who
made physical visits to all outlets to judge the quality of the food and services
provided by the participants.

The jury
Sunit Jain said, “I believe there’s

“I think as a first time event, it was well
organised, fairly professional, good standard
and a very encouraging thing for a growing
city like Guwahati where food is now becoming
extremely popular. Five to seven years back the
food culture was very limited and it was partly
international. Either there was local food,

Never could you imagine that food here will
ever become global.

the food industry put in to satisfy their

The participant said that it was one of
the best event nights he ever participated in.
The finale
The event where the winners were
announced and rewarded was organised in a unique way at Hotel Radisson Blu. The affair started at around 7
pm and lasted till 9pm followed by a
grand cocktail dinner provided by the
organisers. Around 250 people witnessed the award function including
people from various sections of the
society. The participants and the jury
were especially from the food sector and the occasion was chaired by
Sanjeev Pawa as the chief guest who
is senior vice-president, South Asia,
Carlson Rezidor. The guest of honour
of the event was Suresh Hinduja, Editor, Times Food Guide. There were
also guests like Tourism Commissioner and Secretary Ashutosh Agnihotri,
GMC Commissioner S Viswanathan,
APRO Additional SP Biraj das, Barpeta DC Varnali Deka and many more.
The event was anchored by emcee Rohan Kumar Das and Mandakani Dass.
Suresh Hinduja said, “It’s a great
initiative and its nice to see that Guwahati is hosting such an event and it was
conducted very professionally. I can’t
believe that it was the first time that
G Plus conducted such an event as it
looks like as it was done with practised
ease. It was a glamorous event where
the who’s who of Guwahati was there
and this being the first year, the momentum for the second year will be
much more.” Hinduja also said that
most of such events have their upturns
and downturns and a little disappointing was the fact that some of the award
winners did not turn up to take their
awards and somehow, Hinduja feels
that next year they will not think of
doing so after knowing the importance of this year’s award show.
The Guwahati Food Awards has
created a new fervour in the food industry of the city, and with the awards
being distributed; the participants
have already started blowing the bugle
for next year’s food awards. Lets wait
and watch what competition in other sectors will the city witness in the
coming days.

TIPS TO CONTROL
INDOOR
ALLERGENS
Allergy and asthma control begins at home. Many people with allergies stay
indoors when outdoor air is full of pollen and spores. But dust mites, animal
dander and even cockroaches can cause problems indoors.
T
ple allergic to animal dander not keep
household pets with feathers or fur.
To test the affect of pets on your
allergies, go on a long vacation away
from areas where pets have been. This
is preferable since pet dander can stay
around a home for months even after
the pet is gone. If that is not possible,
remove the pets from your home for
at least two months and thoroughly
clean all surfaces including walls and
woodwork. Monitor your symptoms.
If you still want pets, bring a pet into
the house, measure the change in your
symptoms, then decide if keeping the
pet is worthwhile.
If you decide to keep a pet, bar it
from the bedroom and keep the door
closed. Cover vents with dense material like cheesecloth. Because animal
allergens are sticky, you need to remove the animal’s favorite furniture
and replace wall-to-wall carpet with
bare floors or at least a low pile carpet. A better option is to choose a pet
without fur or feathers. Some people,
though, also have been known to be
allergic to lizards such as the iguana.
he EPA recommends three
strategies for reducing indoor
air pollution:
• Controlling sources of pollution,
• Ventilating adequately and
• Cleaning indoor air.
Eight out of 10 people in the
country are exposed to house dust
mites. Controlling the air quality in
your home, office, school and car
can reduce allergy and asthma triggers.
What Size Are
Allergens?
Allergens are substances that
cause allergic reactions and trigger
asthma symptoms in some people.
Allergen particles are carried in the
air, but they will settle onto furniture
and floor surfaces. They vary in size
and are measured in microns (also
called micrometers). The larger the
particles, the faster they will settle
out of the air. Pollen, dust mite and
cockroach debris are larger and settle out of the air more quickly than
molds or animal allergens.
Is Indoor
Control
Possible?
With aggressive cleaning, you
can improve indoor air quality and
reduce allergy symptoms. First you
need to remove the source of as
many allergens that you are sensitive to as possible. This includes
pets, carpets, overstuffed furniture,
stuffed toys, non-encased mattresses
and pillows and bedding not washable in hot water. There may be more
allergens on surfaces than in the air.
Surface allergens can be put into the
air easily by disturbing them by sitting or dusting, for example.
Will Air Cleaning
Devices Help?
Maybe, but, the best way to improve air quality is to eliminate the
sources of pollutants from the home.
The next best step is to take measures
to avoid and decrease exposure to allergens. Other important measures
are to increase the circulation of outdoor air into the home and to reduce
the humidity as much as possible.
Reducing humidity decreases
dust mite and mold growth. Air conditioners help reduce the humidity as
well as prevent the exposure of outdoor allergens. You can reduce the
number of outdoor allergens such as
pollen and mold from entering the
home by keeping windows and doors
closed and the air conditioner set on
recirculate.
What Steps Help
Improve Indoor
Air Quality?
Control dust mites. Keep surfaces
in the home clean and uncluttered.
Bare floors and walls are best, particularly in the bedroom where you spend
one-third of your time. If you must
have carpet, throw rugs that can be
washed or low-pile carpets are better.
The single most important meth-
od is to put zippered allergen impermeable or plastic covers on all
pillows, mattresses and box springs.
Encasing mattresses works better
than air cleaners to reduce allergy
symptoms. Every week, wash bedding, uncovered pillows and stuffed
toys in hot water (130 degree F.) to
kill mites.
Vacuum once or
twice weekly.
Vacuuming helps keep allergens to a minimum. But poorquality vacuums could put dust into
the air, so look for asthma friendly.
Certified devices which are proven
through research to be more suitable. If you have allergies, wear a dust
mask while doing housework. Use a
damp or treated cloth for dusting.
Leave the house for several hours
after cleaning it.
Prevent animal
dander.
Most doctors suggest that peo-

Air conditioning in warm weather is best and also helps control dust
mites by reducing humidity. Change

Reduce moisture around the
bathroom, kitchen and other water
areas of the home. Dehumidifiers
will help reduce both mold and dust
mites. Limit yourself to a few houseplants. Fix all leaks and other causes
of damp areas. Clean moldy surfaces.
Rid the yard of moldy firewood and
piles of leaves and weeds.
Control
cockroaches.
Do not leave food or garbage uncovered. Use poison baits, boric acid
and traps rather than chemical agents
that can irritate rhinitis and asthma.

Life
DRESS TO A ‘T’
M
om used to tell me that
clothes makes a man! She
used to also add that we
should dress up for the occasion and
we should dress up in such a manner
that people can connect with the dress
and the occasion.
Mom used to meticulously make it
a point to stitch dresses for every little
celebration. With the little resources
that she had in hand, she would sit at
her hand machine and create superfluous poetry in silk, net and satin. This
could probably be a dress for my role
in a concert but for other occasions,
she would stitch warm tweed coats,
plaid skirts, stockings and ankle length
boots. This winter ensemble would be
complete with a woollen cap she would
have knitted prior to the onset of fall.
She also knitted colourful sweaters
which I was wont to show off amongst
my friends.
Mother got me into the style bandwagon ever since I was a kid. She knew
exactly what I should wear and when.
And somehow, this statement has
rubbed into me and I have tried to live
upto her expectations.
Though I mostly enjoy living in my
denims and a T shirt or a loose white
cotton shirt, however, I love wearing
the right ensemble for the right occasion. During a religious do, be it Puja,
Idd or Christmas, I love to follow a
dress code, which celebrates the moment. It is always great fun to dress for
an occasion, instead of jumping into something nondescript or uninteresting.
Casual is good but not always. For example, a pair
of shorts is great while hanging around with friends
but not while visiting elderly people or going for a religious function. Now, this particular sentence might
probably hurt some of my young friends but I have to
say that respect comes from the clothes we wear, apart
from several other factors.
A formal ensemble is good for office wear, but
these days, we have several options of mix and match
and turn an otherwise boring office wear into something that gives a zing to an otherwise mundane day,
not to forget about the strings of compliments from
friends and colleagues. Friday dressing is what I like
about office wear. These days, we can liberally go wild
wrapping around casual and formal together, the outcome of which is nothing less than awesome!
However, any day, a well-tailored pair of trousers
in black or in a shade of grey, beige or brown teamed
with a white shirt or in pastels, teamed with a comfortable, smart pair of loafers can do wonders for a
dull day at the office.
A close friend of mine who prefers to wear shades
of grey, black and white to office, is of the opinion
that a formal corporate ensemble can be designed for
‘power dressing.’ Commenting about the dress for the
woman, a seamlessly tailored pair of trousers, a shirt
with a good fit, with comfortable shoes and a neatly
done up coiffe, a straight back, without hunching
while walking and sitting adds life to a person anyway
than one who is not dressed for the occasion, hunches
or slouches, while walking or sitting. A happy countenance adds to the whole picture. The exuberance rubs
into the person sitting opposite and works as a chain
process. A well-dressed neat person with a bright facial expression can make his/ her day and anyone’s day
beautiful.
Let’s take the example of Ronald Reagan, former
President of the United States of America who in
his entire political career was never seen sporting a
stubble, or in tousled hair, wearing a dressing gown
I
in public or sporting beach wear even in one of his
most playful moods. When he walked into a roomful
of people, he would command an authority so charismatic that everyone had to just stop what they were
doing and stare. And that is what is important for a
person who wants to exude authority through an ensemble!
Today, the fashion industry is a trillion dollar
industry, maybe with absolutely no competitors. The
trends have changed over the decades and now the
fashion industry has boomed into something unimaginable. The ramps across the world are always on
fire with the latest in fashion trends.
However, here is the catch! One should keep in
mind that everything showcased on the ramp is not
wearable. There are exceptions to that though!
The designer’s palate is like that of an artist, depicting different moods and variations and sometimes
difficult to understand and often unwearable. However, an interesting part of fashion is that the best wearable ensemble, to match the mood, can be picked up
to add to the wardrobe.
It’s important to choose clean, smart cuts to be
presentable to the world. However, it is important
to find out one’s body shape and type; whether it’s
curvy, petite or rounded. The one thing to do is to
find clothes that fit the body shape. A dress for a petite
body shape may not look good on a curvy body shape
and vice versa. It is essential to wear cuts, which will
give a good fit without seams being pulled here and
there; a cut which will genuinely give comfort to the
person wearing it and look good at the same time.
It is not about wearing expensive clothing but the
right clothing. Now, the question is, how will anyone
know which is the right clothing to wear.
Right clothing would mean a proper fit; not too
tight or too loose. Right clothing would be choosing
the right thing to wear for the right occasion and not wearing a pair of shorts
to an interview.

Do Business
Ethically And Still
Make Money
just want to share with you something
that I heard about 12 years ago. When I
was having a conversation with young
business people right here in this city, the
topics of ethics came out. Do you know
what the young entrepreneurs thoughts?
They thought that ethics is something
naive, and if you want to be successful,
you have to be smart. And to be smart
means to find your way anyhow, and
make big bucks in a short period of time.
So, being ethical was considered naive,
and smartness meant doing unethical
things as long as you are not caught. If
you don’t get caught and you do unethical things, that was being smart. This was
the general idea among the youth entrepreneurs.
There are people who are doing business with ethics and they are still making
good profits and going up the ladder.
Of course, over the past decade this
has changed because we have seen many
big companies which went the unethical
way and came crashing down. This has
given a lesson to our young people. But it
is so appalling how smartness got linked
to unethical ways. It is at that time that I
thought, we need to do something about
this. We need to bring those people who
have been doing business ethically together, and showcase them to the world
that - there are people who are doing business with ethics and they are still making
good profits and going up the ladder.
These people are not being exhibited as role models, they are not being presented in a way that people can take them as role models.
So there are role models, but they need a
platform. They need a place to showcase
that it is possible to do business with ethics, and that is how we started this conference - Corporate Culture & Spirituality
(CCS).
It is a matter of pride that today many
people are part of this initiative and many
people are participating as well. The paradigm of people is changing, and now,
those who do business with ethics are
looked at with honor. They themselves
feel pride in doing business ethically.
Business is not useless! In India,
there are many people who think that
business is useless, and they do not
have much respect for business as a
profession. Business is not bad, but using wrong means to do business is bad.
When business associates itself with corporate social responsibility and ethics,
only then will business gains that much
needed status and respect that is due to it.
Unethically you can go high but the
fall will be that much bigger and faster.
This, luckily, nature has shown us in the
past decade.
Corruption or lack of ethics has entered in almost every field, whether it
is sports, business, politics or even religion. In all these important pillars of
society corruption has entered like a cancer. So it is necessary that all these four
aspects of society come together and
cleanse its system of unethical behaviors.
Unethically you can go high but
the fall will be that much bigger and faster. This, luckily, nature
has shown to us in the past decade.
There are ample examples, one such is
match fixing in games. This is such a
sorry state of affairs. Millions of people are watching the game thinking it is
genuine, while someone from behind has
gotten it all fixed already, where they are
know how many goals will be made, or
wickets taken, etc. Why has this greed
and unethical behavior entered into
sports and so many other field is what
we need to ponder on. And we need to
set a new role model in front of the new
generation, because today the youngsters
are moving very fast and they need the
right role models and right guidance.
Conferences like this one will bring forth
the success stories of business, politics,
sports and faith based organization to
showcase to people that - yes, you can be
successful following ethics.
See, one of the most important thing
about being ethical is that you can have
good sleep. You can have good sleep
and be fearless. You can smile from the
core of your heart. But if you have done
anything that is unethical, it robs you of
your smile, robs you of your sleep and
takes away other comforts from you.
In fact, if you look at it, it is very costly doing business unethically. Who would want
to do a business where you gain very little
but spend a lot. It is not good economics. This is the message we need to drive
into the budding entrepreneurs of society.
So it is smart to be ethical and it is smart
to be service oriented. This message we
need to give loud and clear and I hope
that this conference can showcase this
values system to people around the world.
If you have done something
that is unethical, it robs you of your
smile, of your sleep and also takes
away other comforts from you.
In fact, if you look at it, it is very costly
doing business unethically. Who would
want to do a business where you gain
very little but spend a lot. It is not good
economics. Today we are all connected through
the virtual world. Whatever ideas we are
bringing forth here is not limited to this
audience or this space. It is travelling
across the world in minutes, or even seconds probably. In minutes, people sitting
in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South
America and many other places are getting these messages. So all that we will
be doing here in the next two days will
be very significant, and would help uplift
ethics and the wellbeing of our society.
With these few words, I congratulate all of you, and I would ask you
to please ponder more on this and
come up with projects to spread this.
Do you know, conferences are incomplete if they are not followed by some
projects. Just talking will not suffice,
with talking we also need an action plan.
I am sure with all the brilliant minds
here, you can come up with several action
plans which will benefit society at large. I
pray to the almighty to guide us all in the
right direction.
Om Shanti! Shanti!
Shanti!

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is slated
for release on April 3.
In terms of budget, Dibakar, who
is known for movies like Khosla Ka

Shanghai, says that for his new period drama film, he has “maintained
the right balance”. (Also Read: From

spending much. The film was made
in the right budget and I am happy
about it.”

ou really don’t know what to
expect when you are going to
watch a film like Hunterrr.
On one hand it has been made by
one of the finest production houses
in India, Phantom, and on the other
you have a very low budget film with
low key promotions and no big stars.
So with a mixed bag of feelings I entered the theater. Just like me most
of the other reporters were seen chit
chatting with their neighbours asking as to what this film would be
about. No one had the correct answer and that factor made everyone
stay glued to the seats from the very
first shot.
Trust me, I would be lying if I
said people were not glued to their
seats till the end. Everyone was seen
watching the film with utmost attention and laughing, crying, remembering their own history and
gasping at the twists and turns. People hardly checked their vibrating
cell phones, and that was the impact
of Hunterrr.
I personally hadn’t laughed this
much in a long long time. I laughed,
I imagined myself in the shoes of
the lead character, I had tears in my
eyes when he did, I sympathised
with him, I wanted to dare like him;
in short I could feel every bit of the
film in me. And the same goes with
all the men watching the film. If you
were a least bit worried that women
might not laugh at the film’s jokes,
you are wrong. They laughed equally because the film never showed
anything to demean women.
The performances by Gulshan
Devaiah was superb. The nuances
that he brought to the character of
Mandar Ponkshe, was as brilliant
as Kangana Ranaut’s in Queen. In
short, Gulshan is the Amol Palekar in the film, and he is as good
as Amol was in his heydays. The
leading ladies have done their job
perfectly. Sai Tamhankar is HOT
in every sense of the word and she
lives upto that tag in every frame of
the film (whenever she is present).
Radhika Apte’s character is strong
from the outside but very soft from
the inside and she portrays that
very brilliantly. Veera Saxena is
the dumb, confused, teenager who
wants to fall in love for the first time.
LEAVE EVERYTHING AND
GO WATCH THIS FILM. Bollywood hardly has such comedies
and this one is definitely going in
history as one of the bests. A MUST
WATCH!
S
et in the city of Harran after
a vicious outbreak begins to
spread, Dying Light tasks
players with surviving through
any means necessary. Use the
daylight to hunt down resources
and supplies to survive the epidemic. In the daylight the infected pose little threat, they are
slow, apathetic and easily visible,
allowing you to hunt down your
supplies without much resistance. At night however, the tables
turn, the infected become more
acute, and they have one thing
in mind, your flesh! They will
hunt you down no matter where
you run, and they develop almost
superhuman strength meaning
that fighting is no longer an option. The infected aren’t all you
have to worry about though,
other human factions will hunt
you down for your supplies, and
there’s something more terrifying
than anything else lurking in the
shadows. Do whatever you must
to survive the night and see the
sunrise!
Dying Light presents an
open-world populated by the infected, travel wherever you wish
in the hunt for supplies. Freely
explore the city in search of new
resources to craft weapons and
survivors to join your team. The
sizeable crafting system allows
you to create your own unique
weapons to take down your enemies; from barbed wire wrenches
to specialized ammunition make
sure you’re equipped to take
down anything that stands in
your way. Whether escaping from
the infected or hunting them
down, use your free running
skills to seamlessly leap across
buildings, grapple up walls and
evade those that want you dead.
Play your way; with a choice of
four playable characters and a
wide array of both long range and
melee weapons, you’ll be able to
perfect a play style that suits you!
C
ould anyone design a band
more impervious to criticism
than Imagine Dragons? Formed
at Utah’s Brigham Young University
and graduating to become Las Vegas,
and then global, sweethearts, the group
combines heartland earnestness with
showbiz sheen at such a shameless pitch
it’s almost innovative. Their sound is
a ruthlessly competent concoction of
styles: Coldplay-replay mellow melodies, Mumford-y hey-hos, EDM-inflected bass or beats, guitars courtesy
of U2, filtered through alt-rock precursors such as Vegas’s own Killers. Finally,
add some novelty effects -- whistling,
mandolins, anything -- and wallops on
Arcade Fire floor drums whenever they
need to refocus the listener’s attention
(which is often).
The serious moments are often
swamped by the group’s anthemiccompulsive disorder, but they’re still
a relief from ID’s usual grandiosity.
Smoke + Mirrors may seem too recycled and belabored to entice the unconverted, but the hints of hidden depths
are a pleasant surprise. Many doubted
Imagine Dragons even had hidden
shallows.

people can’t tell the difference… Dhurv and Aranya spend
a good part of their lives trying to
figure out why they want to destroy

Sony starts rolling out Lollipop for
its Xperia Z lineup
S
ony has kept its promise and
has started rolling out Android Lollipop update for its
Sony Xperia Z lineup. Currently,
the Android Lollipop update is being rolled out only for the Xperia
Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compactsmartphones. Sony has stated updates for
other Xperia Z devices will follow in
two weeks time.
Sony announced late last year
that they will be updating its entire
Xperia Z lineup to Android Lollipop. This includes Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z,
Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z
Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia
Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, and Xperia Z3
Tablet Compact.
The new update will bring a similar looking UI and UX Sony showcased onXperia Z4 tablet at MWC this
year. This means looks and animations
have changed to accommodate Google’s material design. Multi user profiles
have been added with the addition of
battery life and productivity features.
Storage customization with option to move applications from internal memory to SD card is now available with Android Lollipop update
which will be particularly helpful
for devices with slightly less storage
space.

looking to further explore the augment

According to Analyst Gene Munster writes,

F
acebook has made some
changes to its guidelines for
the website and app. According to Facebook’s updated community standards, the network may
remove or restrict access to content because it breaches a law in a
particular country even though it
doesn’t violate Facebook’s guidelines.
Facebook says in a detailed
post: “Today we are providing more
detail and clarity on what is and is
not allowed. For example, what exactly do we mean by nudity, or what
do we mean by hate speech? While
our policies and standards them-
selves are not changing, we have heard
from people that it would be helpful to
provide more clarity and examples, so
we are doing so with today’s update.
We report the number of government requests to restrict content for
contravening local law in our Global
Government Requests Report, which
we are already released. We challenge
requests that appear to be unreasonable or overbroad. And if a country requests that we remove content because
it is illegal in that country, we will not
necessarily remove it from Facebook
entirely, but may restrict access to it in
the country where it is illegal.
Billions of pieces of content are

shared on Facebook every day. We
hope these two updates help provide
more clarity about the standards we
have, whether they are our own Community Standards or those imposed by
different laws around the world.”

The social networking site says
restrictions have been made on display of nudity and sexual activity
unless the content is educational,
humorus or satire. It also prohibits
explicit images of sex and verbal descriptions of sexual acts .
Facebook has also barred organisations with links to terror activity, crime and hate promoting. It
says it will block content supporting

Windows 10 to launch this summer Olympus announces the Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mark II
O
M
icrosoft has announced
launching its Windows 10
operating system in 190
countries and 111 languages this
summer. The company has also announced teaming up with Xiaomi
wherein a select group of Mi 4 power
users will be invited to test Windows
10. These users users will have the
opportunity to download the Windows 10 Technical Preview.
“...this is an experimental program entirely led by Microsoft, and
we are happy that Mi fans with Mi 4
devices in China will be able to participate and provide feedback,” Xiaomi
responded to the TNW over the tie up
with Microsoft.
Microsoft has further revealed its
strategic partnerships with Lenovo,
Tencent and Qihu 360 for the Windows 10. Lenovo will offer Windows
10 upgrade services at its service
centers. It will also launch Windows
Phones, which will be available in mid
2015.
lympus announced the launch
of the EM-5 Mark II mirrorless camera in India on March
19th. Featuring a 16MP CMOS sensor
and a 5-axis image stabilization system
that they claim is the best in the world
(we’re itching to put it to the test), all
this in a weatherproof and dustproof
body that retails for Rs.74,990 (on
www.olympuspro.in) and a handful of
lenses.
Essentially, Olympus EM-5 Mark
II is supposed to be a compact, fast and
slick micro-four thirds camera with
stellar image stabilization and image
quality.
One thing that we mustn’t forget
to mention is the fact that this camera supports what Olympus is calling
a Sensor-Shift High Resolution mode
that moves the sensor around (a half
pixel at a time) to capture an image
which, Olympus claims, holds more
data than a similar image from a 36MP
DSLR camera.
From our limited hands-on with
the device, we found it to be extremely
well-built, compact, light and very ergonomic (which should be expected,
given Olympus’s history, and the ask-
ing price). Sadly, we couldn’t examine the capabilities of the camera
because none of the samples on display had enough charge to capture
and write an image to the memory
card. We’ll be sure to put this camera
through its paces though and will
present you with a full review when
the camera eventually lands up at
our test centre.

Fun
Your weekly dose of
Aries
TIMEPASS
Taurus
The week ahead could be frustrating, but it brings a chance to relax and
wind down. You may notice a desire to rebel against the system, but you’d
be better off finding a way to fulfill your desires while still maintaining a
positive relationship with the laws of the country. Friday’s Solar Eclipse can
encourage a spiritual breakthrough, enticing you to meditate regularly and
watch your dreams. By doing so you may benefit more than you know.
Leo
Gemini
Get ready for an upbeat social life with options for romance and a chance
to hang out with the people you enjoy most. Although you might feel a tad
anxious about an ongoing relationship, your best bet may be to let it go.
Let it unfold as it will. You’ll release the charge around it and may even
find that the problem melts away of its own accord. Friday’s Eclipse could
coincide with key changes in your friendships and affiliations.
Virgo
Responsibilities may impede a desire for fun and adventure, which you’ll need
to remedy. What you really need is balance - not too much of one or the other.
It’s certainly a good time to study or consider making travel plans. Once Venus
heads into Taurus you’ll be eager to reach out and connect with people who
can help you with your professional aspirations. Friday’s Eclipse encourages
you to come to grips with your finances to ease any associated anxiety.
Sagittarius
A focus on your leisure and pleasure sector encourages you to take it to
the limit. But you need to balance this by thinking carefully about your
financial situation and how much it might cost you. The move of Venus
into your lifestyle sector might tempt you to overindulge, which could be
frustrating if you’re on a diet. Friday’s Solar Eclipse might bring change
to your home or family situation, giving you a chance for a positive
new start.
SUDOKU
HOROSCOPE
Don’t let a minor misunderstanding affect you early on. Stay positive and
things should soon blow over between you. On another note, find the
middle way between sharing too much information and being superficial.
You don’t need to spill your secrets to everyone, only those you trust to
keep them safe. When it comes to your career, this week’s Eclipse brings
a chance to make a breakthrough. If you’re offered a golden opportunity,
go for it.
Cancer
You’ll need to decide how much to focus on your mission and purpose and
how much to give in to another’s need for attention. One incident could
make you aware of how much of your time you’ve given away and how
little you’ve gotten in return. The move of Venus into your social sector
brings options for warmth, romance, and fun. Friday’s Solar Eclipse could
throw the spotlight on your beliefs and those areas where change could
be positive.
Libra
Don’t be too quick off the mark regarding a purchase. It’s best not to buy
on impulse. Besides, you may get more enjoyment from your money if you
use it for leisure and recreation. Starting Tuesday the idea of getting away
might appeal to you, especially if it offers the chance for a relaxing break.
Friday’s Eclipse in Pisces could spotlight changes to a key relationship, moving it in a new and positive direction. A decision may need to be made over
the weekend.
Capricorn
Scorpio
You’ll be in the flow at work and at your creative best. Harness your imagination for success. An edgy transit suggests you should guard against letting
someone disrupt your emotional foundations. Be strong! A Solar Eclipse in
your work and lifestyle sector could coincide with events that encourage you to
make a fresh start with your health or other routines or habits. It helps to know
what you want this weekend, as sitting on the fence won’t work.
This week you have the option to review your thinking and consider whether
or not it’s helping you achieve your goals. If not, think about replacing your
negative thoughts with more upbeat versions. This will enhance your chances of
success. Venus heads into Taurus on Tuesday, lighting up your relationship sector.
Romance takes on a rosy and sensual glow! Friday’s Eclipse in Pisces could bring
a new lover your way. Go easy, though. There’s no need to hurry!
Aquarius
Self-doubt could be a problem early in the week, but you can overcome
anything with a determined approach. Even so, you could resist changes
within the home or family. It’s wise to be flexible, as this is a great time
to make progress. Romance sparkles from Tuesday, when Venus glides
into your pleasure sector to make for some divinely sensual encounters.
Friday’s Solar Eclipse could pave the way for a new and very exciting
career or business option.
Communication and interactions continue to be very important this
week, bringing many opportunities for work, new business, and buying
and selling. The only thing that could prevent you from getting ahead is
the pattern of limitation within you. It’s time to become aware of it and
let it go. A potent influence could encourage you to make changes to
your financial situation, particularly if you’ve lost your way lately. Take
time out to deeply relax when Venus enters Taurus.
Pisces
Certain friends may no longer share your values, especially if yours have
become more alternative or cutting edge. If this drives a wedge between
you, it might be time to find people who understand you. Use your discrimination on Wednesday, when things may not be entirely clear cut.
Friday’s Solar Eclipse in your sign brings the chance of a fresh new start
in any area of life you choose. An opportunity may come your way that’s
too good to resist.

shows us one way to keep your pot
from boiling over.
When you put a pot of water

top of the pot. If it starts to boil
up too high, the spoon will pop the
bubbles and keep it from boiling
over as quickly, meaning you have
more time to get back and turn the

warp a wooden spoon, so do it with
a utensil you don’t want as much.

Chocoholics can
now
‘sniff ’ chocolates
without fear of
getting fat!
Nicole Scherzinger
just
‘definitely’ wants children
N
icole Scherzinger has
admitted she
“definitely” wants
a future which sees
her getting married
and having children,
despite her recent split
from Lewis Hamilton
following seven years
in their on and off
relationship.
Asked if she
still wants marriage
and kids, she said:
“Settling down is definitely in the picture
for me but everything
at the right time.”
C
hocolate lovers will now
be able to enjoy chocolates
without any fear of putting
on weight, as a Belgian chocolatier
has invented Chocolate Shooter
with which one could feel the taste
of chocolate by just sniffing it.
Dominique Persoone has
come up like a Godman for every
sweet tooth person as he has invented Chocolate Shooter that
allows one to sniff different flavoured chocolate to enjoy the
chocolate experience without putting on the weight.Persoone explained on his website that as per
a recent research nose played an
important role as it picks up both
odours and tastes, so the idea of
using nose to enjoy a chocolate
tasting event or dessert wasn’t that
bad.
Persoone invented this powder
when the Rolling Stones asked him
to create a dessert, he then came
up with a device which shooted the
powder up in the nose, and allowed
chocolate to go direct in the deepest
part of the brain.
The chocolate powder that
comes in mint, ginger and raspberry flavours costs around 70 dollars
and almost 25,000 units have been
sold around the world.
Energy drinks raise resting
E
blood pressure
nergy drinks may increase the
risk of cardiac events, warns a
new study.
Healthy young adults who don’t
consume caffeine regularly experienced a greater rise in resting blood
pressure after consumption of a
commercially available energy drink
- compared to a placebo drink, researchers found.
We know that energy drink consumption is widespread and rising
among young people. “We and others
have previously shown that energy
drinks increase blood pressure,” said
lead study author Anna Svatikova
from the Mayo Clinic.
“Now we are seeing that for those
not used to caffeine, the concern may
be even greater,” Svatikova added.
In the study, researchers alternately
gave a can of a commercially available
energy drink or a placebo drink to 25
healthy young adults, age 19 to 40,
and assessed changes in heart rate and
blood pressure.
Want a happy married life?
Have sex 11 times a month
Men can burn calories just
by being couch potatoes!
F
A
new research has revealed
that sitting on a couch in
front of a Television set for
hours helps men to burn more than
600 calories.
The study showed that women
who did the same thing burned less
than half as many calories as men did
when resting, as they weighed less
and had less muscle mass.
The doctors examined the en-
ergy levels of couples who munched
600-calorie fry-ups before doing three
hours of cleaning, gym work or watching TV, and noticed that men burned
640 calories, whereas, women used up
only 292 calories.
The study also found that light
housework was as good as a tough gym
workout for both men and women as
moderate continuous activity uses
more calories.
or newly-married men, the tip
is fairly simple to keep your
spouse in super mood: It is
not about satisfaction that makes
the women happy but the frequency
of sex.
According to a new study, unhappy newly married women have
sex for three to four times a month
while the happy women have it 11
times a month, according to studies.
“After their first two years of
marriage or relationship, couples
must do more to maintain their
initial level of intimacy and excitement,” M. Gary Neuman, bestselling author, psychotherapist and lead
author of the study, was quoted as
saying.
According to Neuman, the lesser
frequency of sex among couples is owing to common problems of daily life
such as paying bills, kids getting sick
and even lack of sleep.
He based his findings on a re-
search experiment that involved 400
women who were considered happy
or unhappy.
The aim was to discover the
number of times a couple must make
love every month to be happy.
