The concept of development has a long and winding etymology in social sciences. When used in the context of ecology it has been associated with ambiguous and contradictory meanings. It could imply a more or less neutral process of social change, including ecological change or change in the natural habitat; a process which is not a cause, a cure nor a consequence of anything. It could imply an analysis of the ecological consequences of a single development project. On the other hand, it could mean policies, programmes and interventions that enhance or cure the problems of nature. Or it could also mean policies and programmes that destroy nature. In some literature it has meant both destruction and reconstruction of nature, such that it has been suggested, development as industrialization in consort with modern technology has redefined the relationship between human species and nature. The members of faculty of IIT Guwahati and of other premier institutes and universities will deliver the lectures. The workshop will provide an opportunity to deliberate on current environmental issues and generate new knowledge related to understanding the background and causes of these issues at the local/regional and global levels. This Workshop intends to provide a discussion of how to proceed on an analysis of the relationship between ecology and development. Several case studies will be undertaken in the context of India. The Workshop will be highly useful for teachers of engineering colleges so far as skills of pedagogy are concerned. COURSE CONTENT Interrogating the relationship between ecology and development in India, especially in the north-east. Modern technology-based industries and services and its impact on natural resourcebased livelihoods. Dams and hydroelectric power Economic and cultural meanings of water Case Studies METHODOLOGY Lecture Sessions Interactive Discussions and Presentations COURSE MATERIAL Each registered participant will be provided with a comprehensive set of lecture notes. VENUE The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994 and academic programs commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments covering the major engineering and science disciplines. With one of the most beautiful campuses in the continent, the infrastructure for teaching and carrying out advanced research is world class, being equipped with state-of-the-art engineering and scientific instruments. The IIT Guwahati campus stands on a sprawling 285 hectares of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra. The campus is about 25 km from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and hills and vast open spaces on the other side, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. The city of Guwahati is the gateway to North East India and connected with many major cities in the country by rail and air.
