Event Director’s Welcome
The Doctors’ Message
Welcome everyone to the 11th edition of the
Forrest Graperide.
Welcome to the 11th Forrest Graperide! John
and I are thrilled to see so many familiar and
new faces pouring into Marlborough each year
for the Graperide. It is an incredible ride that
showcases not only the natural beauty of
Marlborough but also the camaraderie,
determination, mental and physical wellbeing,
and achievement that cycling bestows on so
many.
It seems like last weekend when we were
hosting the 10th Anniversary of the event with
the last 12 months having gone so fast! A little
bit like my good friend Duncan Mackenzie’s
track riding at the moment!
Another big thank you to the good Doctors Brigid and John
Forrest for allowing us to use their beautiful backyard which is also
part of the heart and soul of the wine capital of New Zealand.
They are good in so many ways but particularly for their passion
for what we are doing here today and that is riding our bikes,
enjoying the company of good friends and family and having a
whole lot of fun that will be long lasting memories for the years to
come.
There is again great anticipation for us all that this weekend of
riding our bikes holds a host of varying emotions for us. Whether
it be from our perspective (organizers) that we make the event
meet your expectations for enjoyment and safety. From your view
it might mean beating your time from last year or a previous years
times, competing against your mates, enjoying the day out with
friends and family, a first timer feeling anxious and or excited or
both or simply heading out onto the variety of courses that are
available to soak in the great experiences of riding with like
minded cyclists.
What ever your own personal reason/s, all we would ask as the
organizers is you show respect and support to all other entrants,
motor vehicle traffic and our wonderful team of volunteers at all
times. It goes without saying there is no great event without a
great team of people behind the scenes so if you do get the
opportunity to say thank you to one of them then by all means
show them how grateful you are of their support.
It was with a lot of sadness to learn about the tragic lose of a great
friend and ambassador for New Zealand cycling in Stu Downs.
There are still many unanswered questions for his family and many
of his close friends regarding his passing. I remember a very
grateful novice and very unfit cyclist (Stu) back in 2005 who
thanked me for changing his life forever after he attended the
inaugural event. The cycling universe has lost one of its stars and so
this weekend’s event is dedicated in his honour and memory and
the amazing work he did to mentor and motivate so many to love
and appreciate the sport.
That aside lets enjoy the day and the fact we can go and ride with
the sun on our backs, the wind in our faces with a couple of
thousand other human beings who love doing the very same thing!
Be kind, gentle and respectful out there and make some new
friends along the way. Take good care of each other.
Pete Halligan
Event Director
Being in the midst of our 2015 harvest, it truly is an enthralling time
for everyone to join us at Forrest and see Marlborough as a whole
work round the clock to ensure the highest quality fruit makes its
way into our wines. Of special note is that 2015 sees Forrest notch
up 25 years in business, an eye opening milestone when we think
back to the early days; and, we welcome home our daughter Beth
who joins John and Dave as winemakers here at Forrest – Yes, John
is slowing down and handing over the reins…..sometimes.
Synonymous with the Graperide is our brand The Doctors’. The
Doctors’ continues to go from strength to strength with the 2014
Riesling picking up two trophies for Champion Riesling and
Champion Open White Wine at the Air New Zealand Wine awards
and The Doctors’ Lower Alcohol Sauvignon Blanc being awarded a
gold medal at the Sydney International Wine Show.
A special thanks to Pete Halligan, Duncan Mackenzie and their host
of volunteers that make this event so distinctive. Most importantly
to all the riders and supporters that have joined for the 2015
Forrest Graperide, have fun and be safe!
John and Brigid Forrest
“The Doctors”
Mayoral Welcome
Marlborough in late summer is a stunning
time of the year and a time when we get to
welcome participants in the biggest annual
cycling event in the South Island. The Forrest
Graperide draws in everyone from elite
cyclists to non-competitive riders, relay teams
and community group fundraisers. So whether
you’re after fast times – or a good time out
on the bike – this is an event you’ll love.
The circuit is special; it’s a real scenic tour of Marlborough. You’ll
begin by cycling through rolling farmland, along the more
challenging Queen Charlotte Drive with its stunning vistas, passing
the greenshell mussel capital of Havelock and into Renwick, the
heart of Marlborough wine country.
No matter whether you’re a sprint cyclist or part of a team
challenge, completing multiple laps of the circuit or testing your
own fitness, you’ll find this is a well-organised event, well-supported
by Marlborough and well and truly part of our calendar of sporting
and social events! The finishing post celebration at Renwick’s
Forrest Estate Winery is not to be missed.
A special welcome to all those who’re visiting us for the Graperide.
Please make sure you get beyond the circuit itself; you’ll need time
to revive yourself after the racing and Marlborough is the perfect
place for a restorative – rest, recreation or refreshment!

Parking and Venue Access Information
Plan to arrive at the start/finish line at Forrest Wines at least fifteen minutes prior to your briefing time. It will take time to park over
1500 vehicles and you need to be in position and ready to ride before your briefing. Please consider where you will park in relation to
which direction you will be coming from. If travelling from Blenheim it will take you at least 45 minutes from the time you leave your
accommodation to being at the start line. If travelling from Picton it will take you just over an hour.
If you are coming from Blenheim down Old Renwick Road then you should consider turning right into Pak Lims Road and then left into
Foxes Island Road. This will have you parked in the biggest parking area nearest to Forrest Wines which is right next to SH6. If you are
coming from Blenheim down Middle Renwick Road then we suggest you travel into Renwick on High Street and then right into Inkerman
Street where you will find carparking.
If you are coming from Picton turn into Rapaura Road at Spring Creek and travel about 8km before turning left into Vintage Lane. Travel
along Vintage Lane for just over 1km and turn right into Foxes Island Road to access the parking area which is next to SH6.
If coming from Nelson we encourage you to turn left into Rapaura Road, and then right into Vintage Lane and then right again into Foxes
Island Road. This will take you to the largest carparks next to SH6.
For those coming from SH63 (Westcoast Road) make your way into Renwick. You have the choice of accessing Blicks Road from SH 6 or
Inkerman Street from High Street.
Magnum riders will be best to use the car parking in Blicks Road.
Access to the venue from the car parks is as follows. If you are parked in Blicks Road make your way to the Forrest Wines entrance which
is located about 40 metres from the Blicks Road and SH 6 intersection. Use this service lane to make you way to the start. You may ride
your bike in the lane but this is at slow speeds. Please be aware that there may be offical vehicles using this lane throughout the day.
If you are parked in the SH6 parking area there will be several access points between the rows of grapes that will lead to the venue.
Follow the directions of the marshals and event signage.
Under no circumstances are any vehicles other than authorised offical or sponsor vehicles allowed to come into the venue.
When leaving after the prize giving, there will be traffic management in place at Conder’s Bend Rd / SH6 corner. Please show patience.

Start Information and Race Briefing for Main Event
All riders must listen to the briefing. Thank you for your patience if start times are delayed slightly but we will strive to start promptly.
Please ensure that you position yourself at the start line according to the allocated race number you have been given. The numbers relate
to the average speed you selected when you entered online so it is very important that you remain within these groups at the start.
Please watch out for event signage and listen to the directions of the starters and marshals. Any non compliance by riders may see them
removed from the event. Riders will be released in pulses of 50 to 100 riders at one to two minute intervals.
All riders preparing for the 8.20am briefing please self marshal to the appropriate time groups. There will be ample opportunity to
promote yourself up the groups on the road and it is far better than constantly being overtaken. Remember your time does not start until
you cross the start mats. Ensure you are at the start area at least 30 minutes prior to your briefing time.

collect. There will be a tail-end vehicle provided for riders and bikes
incapable of completing the course. If you are in this position please

There is an expectation by the organisers that everyone is
responsible for carrying their own food and drink supply. However,
to further assist you there will be water and High5 hydration
products available at Linkwater which is just past halfway. For High5
Magnum riders there will be a second High5 feed station just off the

Course Information
Marshals - Forrest Rangers
To maximise your safety we again have the ‘Forrest Rangers’, a highly visible group of very experienced cyclists who will ride among the
bunches around the course. We also are fortunate that we have the assistance of local motor cycle riders. If you hear a whistle blowing or a
horn tooting, it will be due to someone in your bunch doing something wrong or breaking a traffic rule. If it is you, please cease whatever it is
that is upsetting the marshal. Any verbal abuse or gesticulation toward any officials will mean immediate disqualification from the event. They
are there to ensure all riders adhere to safe riding practices and will offer advice and instruction to riders. In the event of failure to follow
their instructions, they have the power to withdraw riders from the event and all associated prize draws.
Hazards and Controlled Areas
There will be a Police presence throughout the event. All riders must obey all traffic regulations at all times. The organizers will assist the
Police in prosecuting any riders endangering themselves or others through any breach of traffic law.
• Please be aware that any breaches of these instructions could see you disqualified from this event and automatically removed from the
spot prize competition.
• Take note of all event and road signage throughout the course.
• If you have an allergy to wasps or bees please take appropriate medication with you.
• Communicate in a positive, friendly and respectful manner to fellow competitors and other users of the roads.
• There may be a number of areas where road works are in progress. Please be extra cautious in these areas and warn other riders of
hazards you identify.
• The start/finish zone is an area full of hazards so please ensure you are alert at all times.
• Grove Road Bridge is approximately 13km from the start on the outskirts of Blenheim. There is a 90 degree left hand turn at the
intersection as you turn onto SH1. It is a busy part of State Highway One and will be controlled by marshals. There is to be no passing
on bridges and you will ride no more than two abreast.
• Please be aware of the red reflectors that have been placed on the road just on the inside of the cycle lane on SH1 from the Grove
Road Bridge through to Picton. They have a high profile and a sharp leading edge and should be avoided. Maintain your line of travel
and should you run over one of these objects please warn other riders of their location.
• When avoiding potholes and other hazards, signal these to following riders as you may be obscuring their view of these hazards.
• Ride a straight course for the safety of all riders and do not overlap the rear wheel of the rider in front. If they change direction
suddenly, you may be brought down. Take food and water while at the back of the bunch.
• Please warn and where appropriate signal to other riders when making a turn.
• You must stay well to the left side of the road as you descend down into Picton. Police will be present to ensure road rules are not
breached. If riders do not adhere to keeping to the left hand side of the road they will be stopped and ticketed. Remember also there is
a sharp left hand turn to negotiate into Kent Street. Please warn other riders behind you when making this turn and watch for event signage.
• Riders are to be cautious at the Picton relay transition area. Follow the instructions of the marshals.
• The Queen Charlotte Drive and over the next 15 to 20km the road is winding with steep descents and sharp left and right hand turns.
Extreme caution is required through this stage of the ride. Please note that, if wet, many of the bends will be slippery. The High5 Drink
Station at Linkwater will have riders stopping. If you plan to stop, be conscious of all riders and traffic around you.
• Immediately after the drink station is a one way bridge. Follow the instructions of the marshals.
• You will then climb the Mahakipawa Hill, extreme caution is required on the descent towards Havelock as there are sharp and off
camber corners, some with loose gravel or grit.
• Riders are to be cautious at the relay transition area at Havelock and follow the instructions of the marshals.
• You will be on the homeward leg with approximately 28km to go to the finish at Forrest Wines.
• The most annoying thing for riders who have been working really hard and being very safe about doing this on the front of a bunch is
when with about 5km to go riders who have been 'sitting on' decide it is time to make their move to the front. This causes a great deal
of frustration for the hard working and safe riders. They have been working hard while many have been, as they say in the
cycling world, 'sucking a wheel'. THIS PRACTICE HAS TO STOP. This event is not the Tour De France or the World Champs and
there is no great pot of money or gold at the end. This is a recreational cycling event. Any riders who place themselves in this position
and do not adhere to marshal or other event official instructions will be disqualified from the event. This year will see some more
signage relating to this and when you hear marshals calling to you to move back or over then that is what you do.
• Please be aware a High5 drink and food stop will be operating 600m past the Wairau River bridge for the Magnum riders only. This is
also only 1.2 kilometres from the entrance into Forrest Wines on SH 6
• Extreme care and caution is required when entering the Forrest Wines finishing lane. Please note this is a no overtaking area. It is windy
and visibility is limited due to the tight sweeping turns.
• Decrease your speed once you have crossed the finish line and follow the directions of the marshals and road signage.
• The finishing lane must be kept clear at all times. Supporters and finished riders please use the walkway access to return to your cars.
• Have a safe and enjoyable ride.

Relay Riders Information
• Your transponder is your relay baton. If you fail to pass this to your team mate at your change point you will not be credited with a

transponders.
• Ensure you return your transponder to the Help Desk to avoid being charged $50.
• Vehicles associated with relay riders must display their green sticker on the centre of their right hand headlight.
• Before the start all relay riders must park cars down Condors Bend Road opposite the Forrest Wines stone wall. Please do not park
on SH 6. Take care crossing the road when accessing the venue.
• They will leave at 8.25am following the race briefing for the Picton changeover.

The Taster - 42km
This was introduced for those riders who either have not had the chance to get as much training in the longer courses and also as an
introduction to big events. Riders will start and finish from Forrest Wines and travel the same route as the long course until they reach the
little settlement of Tuamarina on SH 1 where they will turn left onto the Tuamarina Track. The Tuamarina Track road is a really pleasant and
interesting course with lots of windy bends and follows the Wairau River right through to SH 6. There is a small 3km section of gravel and
will have the odd pot hole that you will need to be wary of but will be okay for road bikes. Please ride single file along this section of the
course. If you are not feeling confident riding at speed on this section then slow down. There may be some sections of the road other than
the gravel section where there will not be a centre line so please keep well to the left at all times. Riders will then turn left onto SH 6 and
cross the Wairau River bridge and have just under 2km to the finish.

age old tradition of crushing the three tonne of pinot grapes. You will be assisted in and out of the purpose built oak vat. A purpose built
shower will be avilable for all grape crushers behind the tasting room.
Prize Giving - 3.15pm
Prize giving will start at 3.15pm at Forrest Wines. At times due to situations beyond our control there can be slight delays so thank you
for your patience if this situation arises. There will be distribution of major spot prizes and category winners at this time and you will need
to be on hand with your race number to claim these. All first three place getters in the Magnum and Speed Bunny categories will be asked
to come on stage. Due to time constraints only the winners in the recreational 101km course and 42km course will be called to come on
stage. All other place getters will be called out and will pick up their prize from the base of the stage. We will be rolling out the red carpet
to speed up the access way to the stage. If you know you are one of our place getters it would be really helpful if you were able to
position yourself close to the stage area or access way. Due to the difficulty of having a large enough venue, if wet our major spot prizes
and category winners will be displayed on our website as soon as possible. Please collect your prize from the prize giving team on the
stage area if you know you are a category winner or spot prize winner. All unclaimed prizes will be held by the organisers until they are
claimed.
Spot Prizes
Place your race number tear off strip in the red bin provided on the stage area to be eligible for our spot prizes. You will need to be
present at prize giving with your race number to be in with a chance to win the following:
• Merida road bikes x 4

• $1000 BroilKing package

become available. Please check the provisional results and advise the Help Desk of any anomalies. Registered riders will be a gun start. All
other categories will be decided on the basis of actual elapsed time. If you have any queries regarding your time please email Andrew
Ninness directly from Ninness Associates at [email protected] Timing results and certificates will be available on the
website. A reminder that for all our team entrants their results will only be shown in the team results display. Each individual's times will
show in the results when they look at each team's details. To avoid double dipping team members are automatically removed from the
individual results and do not show in the individual place or age group listings.

If you stopped to assist a rider and therefore feel your time has been compromised please complete a ‘Guardian Angels’ form at the Help
Desk.Your individual time will be adjusted and you will be able to print out your certificate with your estimated finish time. Please note the
actual finishers will not be deprived of their placing but you will be able to see where you may have been placed with your estimated time
