The Festival shall be under the direction of the Festival Committee and is open to any student (nonprofessional) currently taking lessons. For information please contact the Festival Office by phone at

The judge’s decision shall be final.
Awards will be issued at the conclusion of each class. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place
contestants based on the three highest marks awarded by the adjudicator, while ribbons will be awarded to
those who don’t place in the top three but do achieve the following marks: First 90 -100, Second 80 – 89,
Third 70 - 79. Where there are less than three competitors in a class, the contestants must achieve the

minimum mark (1 – 90 to 100, 2 – 80 to 89, 3 – 70 to 79) in order to receive an award.
Fees: The entry fee of $60.00 includes entry into two separate classes as well as a Souvenir Program.
Additional entries will be $25.00 per entry.
Solo Contest Classes: Instrumental solo classes will be determined by the age and grade level of each
contestant. Voice and Drum set classes will be determined by the age of the contestant.
Instrumental Classes: Elementary - studying at a pre-Grade 1 level. Grade levels - 1 through 10.
Open - any age at a minimum level of Grade 9.
Voice Classes: Elementary - 8 & under. Junior - 11 & under. Intermediate – 14 & under.
Senior - 17 & under. Adult - 18 & over.
Instrumental Classes: Piano, Guitar, Bass, Violin, and Drum Set.
Students may enter only the
grade level in which they are currently studying. The same piece cannot be performed in two classes.
Music must be memorized and supplied to the adjudicator (except in the drum class). Guitar contestants
should perform from either method books or published transcriptions that include melody and
chords/soloing. Bass guitar competition is available in the Pop class.
Pop: Contestants must play a piece of a “Popular” style which includes pop, rock, jazz, TV or
movie themes.
Classical (One piece per list): This class includes pieces (not studies) that are included in
either List "A," "B," "C," or "D" of the RCM syllabus. They must NOT be popular in style.
Methods (Traditional): Contestants are limited to pieces selected from a PUBLISHED METHOD
BOOK up to Level 6 (Eg. Alfred’s, Glover, Faber, Bastien, etc.). Pieces must NOT be listed in the
RCM syllabus and must NOT be popular in style. This class is based on the level ascribed to the
method book.
Open: Contestants may perform a piece of their choice at a minimum level of Grade 9. A very
high standard of performance is expected.
Voice Classes: Music MUST BE supplied to the adjudicator. See additional rules below. The use of
photocopied or no music will result in adjudication only and no marks will be awarded. Contestants must
provide their own accompanist, tape or CD (music must be cued if used as accompaniment). The tape or
CD may NOT include the lead vocal track.
Pop: Contestants must sing a piece in a “Pop” style which includes pop, rock, jazz, TV or movie
themes.
Broadway: Contestants must sing a piece from a Broadway or other musical production. The
same piece cannot be performed in both Pop and Broadway classes.
Classical: Contestants must sing a selection from the RCM or Conservatory Canada Songbook
series or any other suitable publication.
Pop Combos/Ensembles: The average age and grade level of the entire group will determine the
categories for this competition.

Music must be supplied to the adjudicator. NO PHOTOCOPIES will be allowed. Purchased internet copies
are allowed as well as pieces that are public domain acquired from the IMSLP/Petrucci Music Library.
Memory: All selections must be memorized. A deduction of up to 10 marks may result if music is used.
Conduct during a performance deemed inappropriate by the Festival Judges will be cause for immediate
disqualification.

The entry fee for the Pop Combo/Band Contest is $40.00 per contestant if this is the only class being
entered, otherwise it may be considered as a second entry.
The Pop Combo/Ensemble Contest will be divided into classes according to the average age and grade
level of contestants as well as the number of entries. It is not necessary to provide music to the
adjudicator for pop combos. All equipment will be supplied. Combos should bring their own effects
pedals and instruments (except drums). There is a 15-minute time limit, which includes set-up time. Two
pieces may be performed.
