Mandate Procedures
Compulsory Gymnasts:
A level 3 compulsory gymnast who scored a 34.00 all around twice during the season may not
compete in level 3 the following season and will be placed in the Super Level at Regionals and State.
A level 4 compulsory gymnasts who scored a 33.00 all around twice during the season may not
compete Level 4 the following season and will be placed in the Super Level at Regionals and State.
Optional Gymnasts:
In order to be mandated to a higher competitive level, a gymnast must fall into at least one of the
following situation categories. Each team is responsible for monitoring and moving their gymnasts
throughout the regular season in accordance with the mandate procedure. Any gymnast that has not been
moved during the regular season will be mandated to her appropriate level at the regional meet by the
league. All of the gymnasts’ current season scores are used to determine her level, even if her level
changes more than once in a single season. A gymnast’s level will not change from the Regional to the
State meet.
Super 3s and 4s
Goal: To place gymnasts in the appropriate level for Compulsory competition that is most beneficial for
the participants in the entire league.
• Any Compulsory 3 gymnast that scores a 34 or higher in 2 regular season meets will be moved
to the “Super” category for their level to compete Regionals and State.
• Any Compulsory 4 gymnast that scores a 33 or higher in 2 Regular season meets will be
moved to the “Super” category for their level to compete Regionals and State. Any gymnast
that competes as a “Super” is not eligible to compete that level again the next season.
• Every gymnast in the “Super” Level will automatically qualify for the State meet.
• Any Gymnast that qualifies to the “Super” category will not be eligible to compete that level
the following season
*Situation One: Mandate by Event:
In the event that a gymnast, in an assigned optional level, scores equal to or greater than a higher
competitive level qualifying score in 3 events, twice during the regular season, that competitor will be
assigned to the higher skill level. This mandate situation does not have to occur in the same meet or
congruent meets. If mandated to upper level in at least three events and had qualified all around in lower
level they may compete all around in new level.
*Situation Two: Mandate By All-Around:
In the event that a gymnast, in assigned optional level, scores equal to or greater than a higher competitive
level all around regional qualifying score, twice during the regular qualifying season, that competitor will
be assigned to the higher skill level.
*Situation Three: Mandate by Level Jump:
If an optional gymnast scores the All Around score of two levels above their current level once, they are
moved up one level for their next competition. (Example: An optional 1 scores the optional 3 All Around
score she is automatically advanced to the Optional 2 level for her next competition).
*Situation Four: Mandate to Open division 5:
If an optional gymnast scores the All Around score of 34.5 twice in the regular season, they are moved up
to optional 5 for the Regional and State competition. The three event rule is also applicable to mandating
to Optional 5’s. If an Optional 5 scores a 34.5 all around score al Regionals, they will go to State in all
around regardless of their placing at Regionals. If they receive and individual even qualifying score at
Regionals, they will also qualify for the state meet.

C.A.R.A. Gymnastics - Competition Preparation
The following information outlines expectations and components of CARA gymnastics meets for all
levels.
PRE-MEET
* Make sure hair is tied up and out of the gymnast face. No color band aids, earrings, temporary
tattoos, or showing sports bra.
ADMISSION COSTS
* $3 - (ages 2 and up)
* $5 - Regional and State competitions (ages 2 and up)
TIME SCHEDULES
* Time schedules for the meets usually are not available until the week before a meet.
* Generally the competitions are as follows:
- Optionals - in the morning
- Level 3 and 4 - afternoon
* Make sure you gymnast arrives by the arrival time listed on the meet schedule. Having your
gymnast show up after warm up puts unnecessary stress on her and the coaches.
* Parents please note that if a prior session ends early, the following session my start up to
30 minutes early! All gymnasts and spectators should plan to arrive earlier than the printed arrive
and march-in times.
* Meet hosts and coaches are typically at a competition for 10-13 hours without a break. Often
times more than 10% of the gymnasts do not show up for the competition. If we can shorten the
competition by starting a session earlier than advertised we will do so.
DURING THE MEET
* For the safety of all the competitors and to ensure each session runs on-time we ask that
gymnasts do not go to their parents at any given time for water, snacks, hair ties, or to talk. Coaches are
constantly trying to keep their gymnasts organized, in the right order and prepared to compete at all times.
Leaving the team to talk to a parent is a distraction for both the gymnast and her coaches. If a gymnast
needs a snack or water they need to have it with them on the competition floor (where the team puts their
bags when not competing).
* Parents and gymnasts are not allowed to speak to a judge at any time during or after the
competition. All communication to the judges must go through your daughter’s coach.
AWARDS
* Unless a parent has previously talked to the coach about leaving early, we encourage each
gymnast to stay throughout the entire awards ceremony. The CARA league wants to encourage every
level and age group to support each other. Leaving early is not setting the example to other teammates
that they are important. Please do not take your child early from awards.
OVERALL
* Your number on objective as a parent/spectator is to encourage your child. The coaches are
working hard to have the girls reach their top ability. Please keep in mind that the coaches are there for
your gymnasts, but they are also very busy with all aspects of a competition. Please respect your coaches
and let them do their job.
Regional and State Meet Rules
A.
For girls, there will be two Regional Meets and one State Meet held on two consecutive days at
the end of season. For boys, there will be one State Meet in which all participants are invited to
attend.
B.
Girls Only - To be eligible for the regional meet, a gymnast must obtain the regional qualifying
score on a particular event at a minimum of one regular season meet or the all-around regional
qualifying score at a minimum of one regular season meet in order to compete that event/events at
the regional championships. No girls will be pulled into the regional meet if they do not have the
regional qualifying score. Qualifying scores will be determined by analyzing the previous year’s
results and projecting scores for the upcoming season.
C.
Gymnasts must compete at the same Regional's as their team.
D.
Girls Only - To be eligible for the State meet, a gymnast must place in the top six of any
individual event or top six all-around at a regional meet in order to compete that event (s) at the
State Championships. No girls will be pulled into the State meet unless they fall under the
guidelines set for regional population differences.
E.
The gate admission at the Regional and State meets is $5 for ages 2 and up.
F.
Six places will be awarded in each event and all-around in each competition level and age group.
In case of a tie, if there is a superior Judge, that score will break the tie to determine the award in
case the tie cannot be broken, ties will be awarded.
G.
The Girl’s State Meet will be conducted with two judges per event one of which will be the State
Meet Referee. It is recommended that the Regional Meets have two judges per event one of which
will be the Meet Referee. The Boy’s State Meet will be conducted with one judge per event.
H.
Sick, Injured or on Vacation: State qualifiers that are known to miss State meet due to injury or
absence will NOT be replaced by a gymnast finishing in a place below 6th at the regional meet.
Concussion Signs & Symptoms
The most common symptoms after a concussive traumatic brain injury are headache, amnesia and
confusion. The amnesia, which may or may not be preceded by a loss of consciousness, almost always
involves the loss of memory of the impact that caused the concussion.
Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include:
• Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
• Temporary loss of consciousness
• Confusion or feeling as if in a fog
• Amnesia surrounding the traumatic event
• Dizziness or "seeing stars"
• Ringing in the ears
• Nausea or vomiting
• Slurred speech
• Fatigue
Some symptoms of concussions may be immediate or delayed in onset by hours or days after injury:
• Concentration and memory complaints
• Irritability and other personality changes
• Sensitivity to light and noise
• Sleep disturbances
• Psychological adjustment problems and depression
• Disorders of taste and smell
Symptoms in children
Head trauma is very common in young children. But concussions can be difficult to recognize in infants and
toddlers because they can't readily communicate how they feel. Nonverbal clues of a concussion may
include:
• Listlessness, tiring easily
• Irritability, crankiness
• Change in eating or sleeping patterns
• Lack of interest in favorite toys
• Loss of balance, unsteady walking
Concussion Signs & Symptoms
When to see a doctor. See a doctor within one to two days if:
You or your child experiences a head injury, even if emergency care isn't required
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you call your child's doctor for advice if your child
receives anything more than a light bump on the head. If your child remains alert, moves normally and
responds to you, the injury is probably mild and usually doesn't need further testing. In this case, if your
child wants to nap, it's OK to let them sleep. If worrisome signs develop later, seek emergency care.
Seek emergency care for a child who experiences a head injury and:
• Vomiting
• A headache that gets worse over time
• Changes in his or her behavior, including irritability or fussiness
• Changes in physical coordination, including stumbling or clumsiness
• Confusion or disorientation
• Slurred speech or other changes in speech
• Vision or eye disturbances, including pupils that are bigger than normal (dilated pupils) or pupils of
unequal sizes
• Changes in breathing pattern
• Lasting or recurrent dizziness
• Blood or fluid discharge from the nose or ears
• Large head bumps or bruises on areas other than the forehead, especially in infants under 12 months of
age
Seek emergency care for anyone who experiences a head injury and:
• A loss of consciousness lasting more than a minute
• Repeated vomiting
• Seizures
• Obvious difficulty with mental function or physical coordination
• Symptoms that worsen over time
Athletes
No one should return to play or vigorous activity while signs or symptoms of a concussion are present.
Experts recommend that an athlete with a suspected concussion not return to play until he or she has
been medically evaluated. Experts also recommend that child and adolescent athletes with a concussion
not return to play on the same day as the injury.
RECOMMENDED DIETARY GUIDELINES
Here is a list of snacks and foods to eat before and during the gymnastics competitions. This is
simple to help you get the Idea of what we would like to be seeing the gymnasts eat, instead of
candy. It should also help them perform at their peak potential, energy wise.
Dinner the night before:
Pasta is great with veggies
Chicken, rice, and veggies
Other good ingredients:
Avocados
Sweet potatoes
Corn
Fish
Breakfast the morning of competition:
Eggs and toast with fruit
Oatmeal (rough cut is the best) with chopped fruit and nuts. This oatmeal can taste a little
bland, so a little raw sugar or brown sugar would be fine to add.
Smoothies are great. You can experiment with this one. Orange juice, fruit, and low fat yogurt.
Add Ice if you want.
Snacks:
Applesauce - low in sugar
Fruit - Bananas, apples blueberries
Whole grain crackers with cheese
Yogurt with nuts/fruits/granola
Trail mix - Buying in bulk is great - you can add your own ingredients- Raisins, nuts, dried
fruit. Nuts such as almonds and sunflower seeds. If you want to add chocolate, add dark
chocolate. All these are also great on their own
Veggies and peanut butter
For a more hardy lunch:
Grilled chicken wraps or sandwiches
And remember Lots of Water!
Teamwork:
noun
Cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons
acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause.

The Gunnison REC Center CARA Gymnastics program is focused on individual
progression and achievement, along with team building, team progression,
team achievements, and encouragement. We work together in practice and
at meets, encouraging and helping each other throughout the season. You
will find positive words around the gym that we strive to live by each day, in
order to make the gym a safe and inviting place of acceptance.
Inspiration
Respect
Confidence
Courage
Passion
Dedication
Cooperation
Determination
Support
These words are referenced every day in practice, in order to keep them in
mind, and to keep the gym feeling like a community. We want the gym to be
a safe place for all. The coaches strive to be there for the girls, in and
out of the gym. We cannot wait to see how well the girls do this season and
recognize them for their efforts.
Love your coaches,
Sam and Megan
