Thank you. Our Partner in Education — Eastview Sobeys Principal’s Message Today your grade 1 - 5 children once again brought home their report cards. I hope that you will take this opportunity to celebrate the successes that their hard work has brought. Don't forget that the report cards reflect their achievement at this particular time only. When talking with your child about their progress, focus on how much they have learned and accomplished, and what their next steps to further improvement can be. If your child has had some trouble during the past term, please help them set some achievable goals to focus positively through the rest of the year and end on a high note. At this time, I am reminded once again, what a lot of family support goes into "growing" a good student. So thank you for all the support you give to your children; reading to and with your children, studying spelling words, helping review for tests, ensuring homework is completed and returned on time, reinforcing the importance of school, encouraging your children to be good citizens, getting your children to school on time...and the list goes on. So, thank you from all of us at G. W. Smith. Your efforts on behalf of your children and the school are truly appreciated! We hope that you are able to join us for our Student-Led Conferences on Thursday, March 26 from 1:00-8:00. This is a chance for you and your children to celebrate their learning. The students (and teachers) have been working hard to prepare for this special event and it brings them great joy to be able to share their hard work and accomplishments with you. See you then! Our goal is to inform students about the different kinds of occupations that are in our community. We will need approximately 15 volunteers willing to present to groups of students about their occupation. Presentations will be about 15-20 minutes long and will be repeated 3 times to different, small, cross-graded groups. Our Partner in Education — Eastview Sobeys Friday, March 20, 2015 What's going on around the school? Our grade 5 basketball teams wrapped up their season with fun tournaments at Holy Family School. We all enjoyed our second round of PRIDE Clubs. Our choir has been working hard to prepare for their RDSO Choir Kids performance on March 23. Welcome back to Mrs. Schimke, who will be taking over Mrs. Brown's kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes. Snacks In order to help students be ready for and focussed on learning, we will be allowing them to snack on healthy items throughout the school day. This includes: Idle Free Zone G. W. Smith School, along with over 30 other schools, has partnered with The City of Red Deer and LaFarge to become Idle Free. The new signage shown here is meant to encourage all drivers (with the exception of emergency vehicles) to turn their engines off when parked on school property. Children, especially those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of vehicle emissions. Help to protect your child’s learning environment by, “Turning Your Key and Being Idle Free”. ♦ Fresh fruit or vegetables (ready to eat and in their original state, rather than canned), ♦ Cheese, ♦ Yogurt (Don’t forget your spoon!). What does “Idle-free” mean? “Idle-free” means we turn off our vehicles when not in motion, when it is safe to do so. For example turn off the engine rather then idling while waiting for passengers, waiting in drive-through line-ups, “warming-up” vehicles for more than five minutes, or running “quick” errands. On extremely cold days, idling may be necessary; however, many Canadians idle for a total of 75 million minutes each day in the wintertime! That’s equal to a single car idling for 144 years! Our Partner in Education — Eastview Sobeys Friday, March 20, 2015 Choir News Our school choir will be performing at the 7:30 concert of Choir Kids on Monday, March 23th. Tickets may be purchased from the school office ($10 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for a family; choir members are not required to have a ticket for this performance). 2014-15 Yearbook Do you have a good photo (or 2 or 3) of your child and their friends at a school event for the yearbook? Please upload them at community.lifetouch.com. The Access Code is: EUSYPP. Did you know that... School Council is considering forming a society. A benefit of forming a society includes fundraising opportunities with the casinos in Red Deer. Running the casino for 2 days typically generates $20,000 - 30,000 and is available to societies every 3 years. This fundraising opportunity could be especially helpful for future initiatives at G.W. Smith School, considering budget constraints that schools are faced with. In order to do so, we would need parent volunteers to help run this subcommittee of School Council and to help run the casino. If you are interested in helping with this initiative, please contact Mandy at the office. Remember You’re in a School Zone Effective during school days: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Read-a-thon In conjunction with Literacy Week (May 4-8) students will be participating in a Read-A-Thon! More info to come. Save the Date: On Tuesday, May 5, 2015 renowned author and former G.W. Smith student, Sigmund Brouwer will be visiting. More information to follow. Y.I.M.B.Y Does your child need more books at home? Just let your child's teacher know and we will send some home. Do you have some good quality children's books you no longer need? Drop them in the YIMBY donation box in the front entrance and we will share them with another school. SCOOPS still uses about 20 000 pieces of paper a year. Please consider switching to the paperless version. Every small action makes a difference! Send your email to [email protected] to make the switch! Eating breakfast helps your child to be more alert during the school day. In fact, kids who eat breakfast are more likely to do well in school and have a healthy body weight. Prepare a balanced breakfast by including at least three of the four food groups from Canada’s Food Guide. Here are some easy and quick breakfast ideas: • • • • • • Whole grain English muffin with an apple and glass of milk Whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a banana Scrambled eggs, and cheese on a whole grain wrap Oatmeal topped with walnuts and strawberries Mixed cereal with milk – mix several high fibre cereals and add some fruit Smoothie made with fruit, yogurt and milk If you run out of time in the morning, encourage your children to take breakfast on the go. Try to find a breakfast that works best for your family to start everyone’s day off right. Involve your kids. • Let your child choose the foods they like. This will increase the chance of them eating the foods you send. Switch up bread options. • Try using whole grain wraps, pitas, small bagels, English muffins, buns or a different type of bread. Add excitement to vegetables and fruit. • Send fruit such as bananas, pineapple or apples with a yogurt dip or vegetables like carrots, cucumbers or celery with hummus dip. Keep in mind; kids are more likely to eat vegetables and fruit that are already cut up! Offer a variety of meat and meat alternatives. • Use leftover meat from supper or make a homemade egg salad mixture for sandwiches. Include milk and milk alternatives. • Have a carton or container of milk with lunch. Add cheese to your child’s sandwich or some yogurt to round out the meal. Aim to include a food choice from each of the four food groups on Canada’s Food Guide (Vegetables and Fruit, Grain Products, Milk and Alternatives and Meat and Alternatives) to make a balanced and healthy meal.
