H AMDEN L IBRARY N EWS Spring 2015 V ol u me 8 , I s s u e 2 Hamden Public Library at 3 locations: Spring Program Calendar Caters to a Variety of Interests The Tuesday evening program series scheduled to begin on April 21st with a showing of the 2015 Academy Award-nominated The Theory of Everything is designed to suit varied audiences. Film buffs will also be treated to Into The Woods on April 28th. Do-ityourselfers and those who are looking for a way to deal with clutter will be pleased to learn that professional organizer Jan Baltrush will provide a presentation entitled “Find Your Stuff” in which she explains how to tackle disorder in your home on May 5th. May 12th Kim Larkin will offer an interactive Aromatherapy Workshop in which participants will learn about the beneficial properties of natural botanicals, construct their own ‘dream pillow’ and follow botanical recipes to create bath and body products. Space is limited for this program; registration is required. Art and architecture lovers will be pleased to know that Artscapades is returning to Hamden on May 19th. This time, New Canaan art educators Robin Hoffman and Jodi Stiffelman follow up their popular Impressionists’ program with Post Impressionism: From Objective to Subjective exploring the lives and works of Cezanne, Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Lautrec. On May 26th, photographer Matt Duman will talk about his book An Education in the Grotesque, which visually documents artistic, historic, architectural and even humorous significance of the gargoyles and grotesques found throughout the buildings on the Yale University campus. Finally, on June 2 noted area author and UNH Practitioner in Residence, Stephen Spignesi, will discuss his latest book, Grover Cleveland’s Rubber Jaw and Other Unusual, Unexpected, Unbelievable But All-True Facts About America’s Presidents, a compendium of fun facts and trivia about the men who have resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, former Nutmegger, Jan Mann (author of the popular Cruising Connecticut with a Picnic Basket) will introduce her new book, How I Won the West: A Journey of Discovery, at a gathering in the library’s Friends’ Room. Jan’s book chronicles her 5-week, 6,400 mile trip through the western states with only a teddy bear and a can of pepper spray as company. Along the way she offers travel tips for the reader who is interested in visiting the area. Don’t miss your opportunity hear about this unique book and meet its fascinating author. Former Hamden mayor Peter F. Villano will join us on Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in Thornton Wilder Hall to talk about his new memoir, War to Peace: One Navy Airman’s Account of the Final Days of World War II. Villano, who served as mayor from 1981 to 1985 and as a state legislator from 2011 to 2012, combines diary entries and photographs from his years in the Navy with contemporary reflections on his military service to create a distinctive tale of the last days of the war. Both programs are free and open to the public. Authors will have copies of their books for sale. No registration is needed.
