Hamden’s Mayor Scott B. Jackson, along with Jody
Goeler, Superintendent of Schools, and former Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz are scheduled to be on hand
when the new Early Learning Center section of the
library’s children’s department is officially opened on
Thursday, January 22, at 11:30 a.m. The addition of
the center, which was funded in part through an Alliance Grant obtained by the Hamden Public Schools
during Ms. Rabinowitz’ tenure, has been underway
since late October. Following a design provided by
Library Display Design Systems, Inc., of Berlin, CT,
the new area—which doubles the space available to
children and families—boasts a variety of new, interactive materials and furnishings designed for the library’s youngest users and their families.
A further celebration of the new space will be observed on Connecticut’s annual Take Your Child to
the Library Day, Saturday, February 8th. Check with
the Children’s Department or visit hamdenlibrary.org
for further information on that day’s special activities.

During the months of January, February, and March,
Hamden Libraries will once again provide a diversion from
the woes of winter weather with the return of the “Cabin Fever Readers” program for adults. On Tuesday, January 13, a
demonstration of truffle-making by popular local chocolatemaking expert, Maria Brandriff, will kick off for the season’s
activities. Seating for this event, which is scheduled for 7
p.m. in the Social Hall in the Senior Center, is limited and
registration is required. Call 203-287-2680 or stop by the
Information Desk at Miller Library to register.
Other Cabin Fever Reader activities and events will include film showings, book discussions, crafts, and a Grand
Finale featuring Craig Hotchkiss of Hartford’s Mark Twain
House. (See complete program schedule on page 3)
Cabin Fever Readers, like the library’s children’s summer
reading program, offers prizes to adults for the time they
spend reading during the winter months. This year’s participants will be entered into eight weekly drawings for Booklovers Companion gift bags filled with items all readers will
enjoy. These along with five fantastic Grand Prizes, have
been generously provided by the Friends of the Hamden Library. Prizes will be displayed in the rotunda beginning in
January.
Cabin Fever Reader registration begins Monday, January
5, at all three Hamden Library locations. It is open to all
readers ages 16 and up. Those who register on or before January 13 will have the opportunity to vote for the movies to be
shown in the weeks that follow, and the first 100 people who
register will receive a free paperback book to jump start their
winter reading.
Further information about the program, including a complete listing of scheduled activities, and directions for participating online will be available in the libraries and at
www.hamdenlibrary.org beginning January 2nd. Prospective
Cabin Fever Readers are also encouraged to sign up for email
notifications through the library website
(www.hamdenlibrary.org).

Circular Ave., during the current open enrollment
period for the statewide affordable care plan. Advisors are on hand in the library on Mondays and Fridays from 1 pm to 5 pm through February 13. No
appointment is needed.
