 A Note From Our Substance Abuse & Prevention Counselor, Mrs. Susan Robertson:
Managing Stress
Stress isn’t just an adult problem. According to the APA’s 2013 Stress in America Survey, 13- to
17-year-olds are experiencing high stress levels. School is the top source of stress for teens and
teens report feeling overwhelmed and having negative thoughts or changes in sleeping habits.
More than one- third reported feeling tired, nervous or anxious, or experiencing irritability and
anger. Many teens reported they did not know how to manage their stress.
To learn how to deal with the demands of life, teens need to learn how to cope effectively.
Unfortunately, some teens turn to tobacco, alcohol and drugs to cope with their stress which only
compounds their problems. You can help your child learn how to deal with the stress in their
lives.
Ways for teens to manage stress:
o Get active (sports, skateboarding, dancing, yoga, hiking, biking, walking,
basketball, etc.)
o Get enough sleep. Cut back on caffeine, TV and spending time on the phone or
computer. Teens need about 9 hours of sleep each night.
o Balance life between schoolwork and pleasure. Learn to schedule.
o Find hobbies or activities that bring joy such as music, drawing, meditation,
spending time with family, etc.
o Find areas in which they excel and have them schedule time to do it. Focusing on
their strengths is a way to balance those feelings of being overwhelmed or “not
good enough.”
o Identify unhealthy ways to cope with stress and avoid them.
