Season Starts for JK She’salady, the Harness
Queen

Nancy Johansson says that all systems are go for the
2015 season as her reigning Horse of the Year JK
She'salady is getting ready to kick off her 3-year-old
campaign.
She took the first step toward what figures to be many
trips to the winner’s circle
this year when she won a
qualifier yesterday
morning at the
Meadowlands in 1:53.3.

Johansson says that she plans to get two qualifiers into
the sophomore pacing lass before dropping her in a
pari-mutuel race, either at Tioga or the Meadowlands in late
May.
"Perfect" is the word to describe for the filly's first season
as she mowed down her rivals in a dozen races, but
Johansson realizes that the slate is clean in 2015. She's
been raised in the racing business and realizes that
anything can happen when the starter says "Go."
"This is a very good group of fillies and there might be
some that matured a lot over the winter," she concedes.
Johansson is aware of the pressure that goes with having
an unbeaten horse.
"I focus on winning races, not losing races," she
emphasizes. "It's our job to keep her fit, sound, and
healthy. But everyone knows you need a little luck, too."
JK She'salady did not begin her freshman season with
perfection. She was third and second, respectively, in her
first two non-betting baby races, beaten by Bedroom
Confessions.
W hen JK She'salady made her pari-mutuel debut, things
changed. Sent off at 4-1 on July 5 at the Meadowlands,
she came from off the pace to nip Bedroom Confessions in
1:53.1 with her final quarter clocked in :26.3.
Two weeks later the two fillies tangled again and
Johansson's filly was even more impressive. Once again
she came from off the pace with a final quarter clocked in
as astonishing :26 to again beat Bedroom Confessions.
From that point on in 2015, no other pacer got closer than a
length to her at the finish. Her female foes fell like autumn
leaves.
In her third start in the Geers at Tioga in early August, she
sat fifth, almost seven lengths back at the half in :58.4. Then
driver Yannick Gingras pointed her to the front end and JK
She'salady paced a back half right at 54 seconds to win in
1:54.
The bay filly loved Mohawk, winning the Eternal
Camnation and the elim and final of the She's a Great Lady
by a total of 18-1/2 lengths.
Johansson also marvels at her champ's Breeders Crown
elim and final in November when she picked up a new
driver in Tim Tetrick and defeated Sassa Hanover.
"Sassa Hanover is a really good filly," Johansson says.
"My filly came first up and wore her down in the elim and
then Sassa Hanover tried to come first up against her in the
final but Jk She'salady won both times."

Johansson says that the queen of pacing lasses is "a bit o
a diva" and always wants to be the leader of the pack when
she's on the track.

This season the champ's trainer is aiming her at the
major Grand Circuit events and doesn't plans to start the
filly in any half-mile tracks in New York Sires stakes. She is
also not staked to the Jugette.
JK Sheslady is not the first unbeaten 2-year-old to reign
as Horse of the Year. That honor also belongs to Bret
Hanover and Niatross.
Bret Hanover is still the poster child in this exclusive
category as he won 24 races without a loss as a juvenile in
1964. In early 1965 he resumed his winning ways and a
national sports magazine, which then cared about harness
racing, featured Bret win an article titled, "Can't Anyone
Beat This Horse?"
Adios Vic answered that affirmatively after Bret's streak
has been extended to 35 straight wins.
Nothing was unlucky about 13 starts for Niatross that
season as he won all of his freshman races and was voted
Horse of the Year in 1979. He fell from the ranks of the
unbeaten----quite literally--- the following season at
Saratoga when he went over the inside hub rail.
Niatross rebounded to win the Meadowlands Pace, Jug,
and usher in a new era of speed with a 1:49.1 time trial at
Lexington.
In 1986, Jate Lobell went unbeaten in his 15 starts as a
2-year-old. Trainer-driver Mark O'Mara felt the pressure as
he prepped the compact youngster for his sophomore
season in 1987. After all, Jate's 1:53 romp over a
rain-splashed surface at The Red Mile was heralded by no
less than Delvin Miller as one of the greatest efforts ever by
a freshman pacer. The harness racing world was
expecting unbelievable deeds from Jate in 1987.
"Horses get a lot bigger from age 2 to 3," said O'Mara
later, and he was referring to reputation, not physical
growth.
O'Mara knew that unbeaten horses attain an aura and
that many people hold unrealistic expectations for such
rare individuals.
"W hen Jate was a 2-year-old, we just took it one race at a
time," recalls O'Mara. "W e later realized that it would be
nice to keep him unbeaten. Before his 3-year-old season,
Jate was expected to be anything and everything. That
pressure did weigh on me to some degree, but Joe
McCluskey, Jate's owner, was really good about things.
Still, as we started the 1987 season, we were holding our
breath a bit."
Jate won 19 in a row before his streak came to an end
when Run The Table upset him at the Meadowlands. Then
Jate got revenge by winning the $500,000 New Jersey
Classic.
Jate Lobell had a wonderful 3-year-old season, winning
more than $1.6 million and compiling a 15-7-2 slate in 25
tries. He was named champion sophomore colt pacer of
the year. It was season that most trainers and drivers
would count as a career highlight. But Jate Lobell still got
beaten 10 times along the way.
JK She'salady starts the 2015 season with a target on her
back, but she also starts with a fighting spirit and a
first-class team to manage her. She is certainly not about to
relinquish her throne without a fight.

Good News and Bad News for Stars Qualifying

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - JK She’salady put her best
foot forward while Mission Brief put in a misstep.
JK She’salady, the 2014 Horse of the Year, made her
seasonal qualifying debut Friday at the Meadowlands
Racetrack, winning by a head over A Plus in 1:53.3 with a
26-second final
quarter-mile. The

where the wire is because she just did enough to stick her
head in front coming across the wire.”
JK She’salady, bred and owned by 3 Brothers Stables,
was undefeated in 12 races last season and became the
first 2-year-old female pacer in harness racing history to be
named Horse of the Year by the U.S. Harness W riters
Association.
Johansson is preparing JK She’salady for her first major
stakes test of the campaign, the Fan Hanover Stakes at
Mohawk Racetrack in mid-June.
“Our big goal is the Fan Hanover, but we haven’t etched
anything in stone about how we’re going to get there yet,”
Johansson said. “She’s got a couple of New York Sire
Stakes that are options or if the Meadowlands would write a
3-year-old filly pace open that would make me really happy
because we could race her here.
“She will qualify one more time, but I don’t know if it will
be next week or the following week.”
Mission Brief, who was the 2014 Dan Patch Award
winner for best 2-year-old female trotter, also made her first
qualifying effort Friday, but went off stride in mid-stretch
while racing from the front. The qualifier was won by Jimmy
Takter’s Smexi in 1:55.3.
Last year, Mission Brief trotted the fastest mile ever by
any 2-year-old – male or female – stopping the clock in
1:50.3 in winning at The Red Mile. She won nine of 13
races – but went off stride in all four losses – and earned
$591,070 for owners Burke Racing Stable, Our Horse Cents
Stables, J&T Silva Stables, and W eaver Bruscemi LLC.
“It was not good,” trainer Ron Burke said with a resigned
smile about Mission Brief’s qualifier. “She didn’t warm up
the best. W e made a shoeing change and I didn’t like it. I
wish we could have reshod her in the paddock, but it is what
it is. So back to the other shoes and march on.
“I liked her behavior; her behavior was good. But I didn’t
like her gait. It was just a bad idea. She didn’t look like
herself. I thought she could get through and we would have
changed (the shoes) anyhow after, but she didn’t. But it’s
not a big deal. W e’ll change her shoes and bring her back.”
Burke’s day otherwise was good. He sent out four
winners, including JK She’salady’s full brother JK
Endofanera, a 4-year-old who won in 1:50.2 with a final
quarter in :26. His other winners were 3-year-old male
trotter Crazy W ow, in a day’s best 1:53.2 for trotters,
3-year-old male pacer Yankee Bounty in 1:52.4 and
3-year-old female pacer Band Of Angels in 1:52.4.
“The rest of the day was super,” Burke said. “W e have
good horses, so they’re going to be good I hope. Crazy
W ow just gets better. I was wrong on him. I didn’t think he’s

as good as he is. He’s a very good horse; maybe even
better than good. JK (Endofanera) was super too. He made
a bigger growth from (age) 3 to 4 than he did from 2 to 3,
which I find funny because he’s a big horse. Maybe he’s
just learning to handle his body now. W e’ll see.”
Burke was uncertain of his plan for JK Endofanera, who
earned more than $1 million last season, but expects the
4-year-old male pacer to begin his new campaign soon. He
has qualified twice at the Meadowlands, finishing second in
1:51.4 last week.
“I really do it week by week,” Burke said. “I’m not two
weeks ahead, I’m in the present. You never know (what
can happen). Mission Brief, the plan was not to be running
in mid-stretch. Now I have to change plans. So we’ll see.”
Takter had five winners in Friday’s qualifiers, with Smexi
joined by 3-year-old male trotters Pinkman (1:55.2) and
The Bank (1:55.3), 4-year-old male trotter Father Patrick
(1:53.3) and 3-year-old female trotter W ild Honey (1:55.4).
Father Patrick is a two-time Dan Patch Award winner and
Pinkman, who held off Muscle Diamond by a neck,
received the 2014 Dan Patch Award for best 2-year-old
male trotter.
“(Father Patrick) was vicious; he was absolutely vicious,”
Takter said after watching the trotter come home with a
final quarter in :26 to win by four lengths over Market
Share. “(Driver Yannick Gingras) said he was scary.
“It was a great day. I don’t think I had one bad horse. You
couldn’t ask for a better qualifier.”
Other qualifier winners Friday were Linda
Toscano-trained 3-year-old male trotter Dapper Don
(1:56.3), Tony Alagna’s 3-year-old female trotter Lock
Down Lindy (1:56), Pat Lachance’s 3-year-old male pacer
Southwind Masimo (1:53), Ed Hart’s 3-year-old male pacer
Dealt A W inner (1:52) and W ayne Givens’ 5-year-old
female pacer Jerseylicious (1:50.3).
For Pena, It Could Have Been Even Worse
Earlier this week trainer Lou Pena was hit with a
three-year suspensions and a $343,000 fine by the New
York Gaming Commission for over 1,700 medication
violations. But as severe as those penalties might seem,
the lawyer representing the Commission that litigated the
case pushed for even stricter sanctions.
Gaming Commission lawyer Rick Goodell urged that
Pena be given a 20-year ban and be fined $675,000. But
hearing officer Clem Parenti went with a lesser penalty.
"It is unfortunate that Pena continues to refuse to accept
responsibility for his many rule violations," said
Commission spokesman Lee Park, "but the Commission is
confident that no legal hurdle that Pena tries to put in the
way will prevent the Commission from imposing a just and
appropriate sanction that serves to protect horses
competing, the other participants in New York's harness
racing and the wagering public, all who rely on the
commission to protect the integrity of the sport."

Totally Rusty Continues Stakes Streak

Delaware Sires Stakes champ Totally Rusty brought her
act to New Jersey and the Queen of the First State made
quite an impression on the locals with a career-best 1:50.3
win in the $39,416 Hardie Hanover, a division of the John
Simpson Memorial Grand Circuit stakes.
A recent private purchase by Let It Ride Stables and Dana
Parham in partnership with her breeder and prior owner
Carter Racing Stable, Totally Rusty was making her first
start for new trainer Ross Croghan but had the comfort of
the regular driver from her Delaware exploits “Captain”
Corey Callahan.
Callahan employed the “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” strategy
and sent the chestnut daughter of Rustys For Real right for
the front as he had done in each of the programmed past
performance lines. The pair set honest fractions of :26.3,
:55 and 1:24 before sprinting home in another :26.3 to seal
the deal. Bedroomconfessions followed the winner
throughout and held place while unable to menace the
winner. Happiness rallied from well back for the show.
It’s all happening tomorrow at The Meadowlands on
Kentucky Derby Day. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. in
preparation for the day-long card at Churchill Downs. Live
racing will start at 5:30 p.m. with the brand new “4 in 40
minutes” wager, which is a quick Pick 4 between
Meadowlands and Tioga Downs races. After a break for the

"I'm very happy with him," said trainer Ron Burke, who
owns Habitat with Our Horse Cents Stables and W eaver
Bruscemi. "I'm pleasantly surprised. He did improve (from
last year) and I didn't think he would because he was
smaller and so quick to learn last year. I'm thrilled.
"I wasn't planning on going to (the Dexter)," Burke said.
"Then I trained him a week out and he was so good, I
thought I would look it up and see what horses (were
eligible). I threw him in at Philly and Yannick said he was
vicious. I knew there was the chance I could get a bye and
then it gave me 10 days to work him again in between. I
was happy with it."
Yannick Gingras will do the driving duties and Habitat has
been assigned the six post.
If there is indeed strength in numbers then Ray Schnittker
has a big shot in the race as he has four of the eight starters
in the race. His quartet consists of Gabe The Bear Dean,
HA Taylor, Bavaro and Broken record.
Apostles Creed, a Dexter elim winner, figures to be the
second choice for the pair of trainer Jimmy Takter and
driver Brett Miller.

Ohio Explores Medication Rules

Horse racing has a drug problem. But it's not what most
people think. The dilemma is rooted in perception because
the incidence of illegal drug use in horses is astonishingly
low. Yet, what's often written about racing would indicate
otherwise. It doesn't add up.
On Tuesday, April 28, the Ohio State Racing Commission
(OSRC) conducted a meeting regarding medication use in
racehorses. The topics ranged from therapeutic treatments
and withdrawal times to environmental contamination and
performance enhancers.
An objective was to better understand the Racing
Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) medication
guidelines, and, where needed, consider updated rules
predicated on published research.
Experts from Ohio and Kentucky attended. The concept
was the idea of Robert Schmitz, Chairman of the OSRC.
Schmitz presides as a key regulator over Ohio's
burgeoning racing business. After a few minutes with
Schmitz it's clear that he views this responsibility as an
opportunity to dramatically evolve the sport.
Schmitz, an appointee by Governor John Kasich, adds
dimension to the position because of his racing experience.
His enthusiasm revealed by a proclivity for Standardbred
pedigrees. Schmitz said "to my knowledge nothing like this
has been held anywhere in the country."
Schmitz was in his element interjecting humor, direction
and respect for the participants while fostering open
dialogue.
The panel providing testimony consisted of many of the
leading experts in the field of equine veterinary medicine.
Dr. John Reichert, the owner of W oodland Run Equine
Clinic, commended the OSRC then said "veterinarians and
horsemen are cast in a negative light at times and I
disagree with that. Horsemen would love a universal
medication policy. The problem is the RMTC guidelines and
their 95/95 rule. That means with 95% confidence that up to
the 95th horse will fit into their therapeutic guidelines.
Unfortunately 1 in 20 horses won't fit and that's not
acceptable."
Dr. Dan W ilson, a co-owner of the Cleveland Equine
Clinic, was next and stated "I support uniform medication
rules and published suggested withdrawal times, but I can't
support the RMTC proposal because the RMTC and ARCI
have proposed a one size fits all medication policy. The
three major racing breeds are all different, with uniquely
different problems."

Regarding environmental contamination W ilson said
"zero tolerance is ridiculous in our culture where cocaine
has contaminated the money supply and drugs like
naproxen (Aleve) are available over the counter. Guidelines
are a good step but testing for parts per trillion of a drug is
useless. These are not performance enhancing levels."
And just ask Thoroughbred trainer Kellyn Gorder who was
recently suspended for 14 months by the Kentucky Horse
Racing Commission. A horse under his care tested positive
for trace methamphetamine. One account said the test
measured only 48 parts per trillion. Under these thresholds
why would anyone subject themselves to such pressure
and become a racehorse trainer or owner?
W ilson referred to a published paper: "In a 2010 study
commissioned by the ARCI 324,215 samples were tested.
Of these only 47 of the tests were related to class 1 or 2
substances. No one knows how many of those were for
environmental contaminants with zero tolerance."
Dr. Brett Berthold, also a co-owner of the Cleveland
Equine Clinic, explained an ambiguity between human and
equine medicine "cortisone is used daily by my colleagues
in human medicine to relieve inflammation. W e as
veterinarians do the same." However, Berthold notes that
he can't use methylprednisolone (Depo-Medrol) because
the long withdrawal guideline hampers his ability to use it
for joint inflammation or allergies. Berthold claims
"Methylprednisolone, in my opinion, is very safe," he said.
"My doctor has injected my knee with it with good results.
Yet, testing thresholds may overrule veterinary medical
judgment. The expertise of the veterinarian is required and
should not be minimized"
Berthold said another awkward RMTC guideline is for
mepivacaine. The dose is currently interpreted that 1.5ml
will be below threshold at 72 hours. He commonly uses 6 to
30ml to produce an anesthetic response in diagnosing
lameness or sutchering a laceration. Berthold questions
"what the withdrawal time would be in these routine
cases?"
Dr. John Piehowicz, a thoroughbred vet working out of
Turfway Park and Belterra Park, began testimony by
saying: "Ohio medication policy is the best in the country."
Yet he lamented that two thirds of the RMTC withdrawal
times are not based on scientific information. Peihowicz
said: "W e're going to catch a lot of dolphins in the tuna net.
The welfare of the horse must be first when developing
medication and testing policy."
Dr. Clara Fenger, a sport horse veterinarian, followed. A
feisty Fenger reinforced concern that 18 of 26 substances
on the RMTC list have no published scientific data for
determining withdrawal times. Fenger said, "there aren't
just 26 therapeutic medications for horses - there're a
hundred of them."
Fenger added, "the OSRC is the only commission in the
country dealing publically with the medication issue in this
depth. The OSRC is open to reviewing alternate thresholds
based on the veterinarian's clinical judgment in addition to
published pharmacology.”
Part of the issue is what Fenger calls "million dollar
machines - mass spectrometers - which test in parts per
trillion. The chemists calculate results but are not trained in
their interpretation."
Drs. Rustin Moore and Teresa Burns, bth from Ohio
State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, discussed
partnering between university and the OSRC to conduct
research on the effects of Cobalt in the racehorse. This
commonly available dietary trace element has garnered
negative media attention lately and the OSRC has decided
to understand it better. The scientific model and budgetary
proposal is being evaluated and will be presented to the
OSRC in the future.
The veterinarians appreciated the efforts of the ARCI and
RMTC. And progress is being made. The ARCI website
states that anti-doping efforts in horse racing are tougher
than those deployed in other sports. ACRI President Ed
Martin said "racing does not allow an undisclosed backdoor
where drug use in condoned in competition."
The work by the OSRC is another step toward stronger
medication guidelines. The approach of evaluating
research, expert opinion and then melding it with common
sense is credible. It's an effort designed to protect the horse
and restore racing’s stature as a noble sport and
sustainable pari-mutuel activity.
Perhaps Ohio will influence the RMTC and ARCI and
become an example to other racing jurisdictions. Racing
stakeholders are in this together and should have the same
goal--protecting the health and well-being of the horse.

Race 7, Claiming $10,000 Pace
SHARK ON BOARD was once decent last year and even
with that 0 for 11 on the year doesn't look much worse than
anyone else in here; Rosecroft invader rates a decent shot.
ANDY BARAN is brought over here from Northfield as
trainer Brad Irvine's first starter of the meet; another 0'fer
on the season that may be helped by the change in
scenery. NF DRUM ROLL met a resurgence in recent
weeks but now goes first start away from that barn; a
number of his recent lines would be more than good
enough. ROCKROCKW HOSTHERE makes his third start
back and lands the rail; due to show something more.
Race 8, Claiming $10,000 Pace
NORTHERN PRIZE has finished in the runner up spot two
weeks in a row but those were both well meant winners for
this level that beat him. That 1:52 mile from last week pops
out and any repeat of that would be good enough in here
from the inside. HRUBYS N LUCK won here last year and
soundly beat the $10K claiming counterparts at Pocono two
back; this is the appropriate spot for him. ACELO
HANOVER never had a chance last out but didn't exactly
impress two back either. On the other hand, he goes for
entirely new connections now and improvement can't be
ruled out. CR FIXED ASSET makes his first start at the
Meadowlands since the move to Hynes and the 12-year-old
is a longshot possibility.
Race 9, 4&5 Year Old Open Pace
DOO W OP HANOVER beat these last week with a
controlled first over move and trainer Elliott has been red
hot. 4-year-old horse by Rocknroll Hanover was one of the
sport’s better sophomores last year and should be a force
this year in the aged division; no reason he can't come right
back and win again. DOVUTO HANOVER was flying late
at the end of his mile last week to just miss while closing in
:25:4; that was the best we've seen him in awhile and Silva
has him sharp once again. LIMELIGHT BEACH needed
his first start of the year last out and should be tighter now;
may still get away last however. SOMESIZESOMESTYLE
makes his seasonal debut and first start for Remmen after
being trained previously by Burke; you can't argue with how
those qualifiers look. SOMEW HERE IN LA makes his
second start back with a right to be better.
Race 10, N/W $6,500 L5 Pace
MAMBO ITALIANO has been inexplicably good of late and
almost looks like himself from a couple years ago when
Allard had him here. This one nearly beat Capozzo last out
and that rival is an upper conditioned type; goes from
McDermott to MacKenzie off the claim. SIR CARY'S Z
TAM has a class edge on most of these but didn't fire when
dropped to this level last out; no excuses now from the rail.
BREAKIN THE LAW takes a big drop and has been
chasing classier foes through the past couple months; one
of the shorter priced contenders. YOU BET YOUR GLASS
was able to bottom out a field he was expected to beat, but
did it in a fast 1:50:2 clocking. He's another fresh claim in
here and we'll see if the new barn can keep him going.
STEADY PULSE hasn't done anything since the reclaim but
trainer Russo is 9 for 17; still looks like he's aiming a bit
high in here though.
