Thinking Big, Myron Bell Planning Major, MultiMillion Dollar Racing Series
By Bill Finley
Myron Bell believes that harness racing desperately
needs a new concept to generate buzz, lure new fans and
reinvigorate the breeding and sales businesses. And he
believes he has just the right idea.
Bell, who is, among
other things, a prominent
owner, breeder and an
advisor to Brittany Farms'
George Segal, said he is
working on putting
together a series of races
for both gaits that would
involve many of the sports
biggest events and include
millions in purse monies
and bonuses.
"W e desperately,
desperately need a buzz,"
Bell said. "W e need
something and I think this
could be a start."
Myron Bell is aiming high with
Bell said he has been
a concept for a new series of
inspired by the intense
races
amount of interest that has
been generated this year by the thoroughbred Triple Crown
and American Pharoah's attempt to join a group of racing
immortals. But he believes the harness racing Triple
Crowns are broken beyond repair and wants something
bigger and better.
"Our Triple Crowns have become a wandering minstrel
show," he said.
Bell's concept is to group four trotting races together, the
Canadian Trotting Classic, the Hambletonian, the Kentucky
Futurity and the Breeders Crown. On the pacing side, the
series would consist of five races, the North America Cup,
the Meadowlands Pace, the Little Brown Jug, a new race
at the Red Mile and the Breeders Crown. Each race would
be worth $1 million and anyone who sweeps all four or five
would be entitled to a bonus of at least $1 million.
"People want to win big prizes," he said. "That's why the
lottery is successful. A million dollars is what attracts
people. We did it once with the W oodrow W ilson and the
Meadowlands Pace and we have to do it again."
He said he wants the races to be held on "big" tracks, but
would gladly make an exception for the Little Brown Jug
because of its prestige and its built-in ability to create
excitement and attract a big crowd.
"You want the Jug as part of this because the Jug is
already a multi-day extravaganza," he said.
As far as a bonuses go, Bell said he has already spoken
to insurance companies to see what it would cost to get a
policy covering what would be paid to a horse sweeping the
series.
"W e'll shoot for $1 million, $2 million, $3 million," he said.
"W e'll try to make the bonus as high as we can. It will all
depend on what the insurance companies say and how
much it will cost."
So far as where all the money will come from to pay for
purses and the insurance costs, Bell said he will start by
asking the breeders to make a substantial contribution in
the way of fees.
"W hatever we ask them to pay they would get that back in
revenue because their yearlings would, in my estimation,
now sell for more," he said.
Funding would also come from sponsors and from
traditional staking payments.
Bell is among those that believes the sport must do
something to break out of its doldrums when it comes to fan
interest, the amount of betting, stagnant yearling sales and
an annual foal crop that continues to decline at an alarming
rate.

"There are people this week that, other than the Triple
Crown, don't even know what horse racing is," Bell said.
"Now, they see a horse going for the Triple Crown and they
say, "Gee, that's exciting, I am going to follow that.' In our
business we need new buyers, new bettors, we need
something to generate interest. W e desperately need that
in our industry. We're a stepchild because we treat
ourselves like a stepchild. W e have a good product. If I
can syndicate a horse (Captaintreacherous) for $12 million
anyone can. It's there. W e've got to give people a reason
to buy horses."
Though mainly committed to 3-year-old races, Bell said
he envisions the series eventually expanding to include
races for 2-year-olds and 4-year-olds.
The concept, he says, is far more than a pipedream. He
says he has talked to several prominent people in the
industry who are behind him and has also received support
from the racetracks that would be involved. He did add that
it is imperative for the Meadowlands to get a casino in
order for the project to move forward.
"I will get this done," he said.

Then there is the filly Ivy League, who is by

Creatine in Action Today in Sweden
Kentucky Futurity winner Creatine will make his third start
year when he faces nine others in the Jämtlands Stora Pris
(Gr. II Int.). The race is worth $99,042 to the winner and will
be held at Östersund. The 5-year-old by Andover Hall will
look to improve on his first two starts in Sweden for trainerdriver Robert Bergh as he finished out of the top three in
both.
Youth Foundation Summer Tour Starts June 12
(press release)
The Hollies sang "The road is long, with many a winding
turn, that leads us to who knows where, who knows when.”
For the Harness Horse Youth Foundation Trottingbreds and
staff, the road this summer will indeed be long, but the
organization knows exactly where it leads.
The summer programs schedule starts at Hoosier Park
on June 12 with more than 300 girl scouts and their families,
then heads to Nappanee, Indiana before the entourage

Asbury Park Press: Meadowlands Casino No
Sure Thing
Not everyone is convinced that the Meadowlands will hit
a home run if there is a casino at the North Jersey
racetrack. In Friday’s Asbury Park Press, columnist Bob
Jordan listed five “signs that the Meadowlands casino, or
any expansion of gambling in the state, may be a losing
bet.”

World Class Is Built-In the Potential Big M Slots
Bid
I hope over the last several years writing this column I
would be described as a fairly honest broker. I am reticent
to sweep something that might shed a bad light on harness
racing under the rug, and I do not apologize for the sport
when it does something I think is wrong. So, hopefully this
column doesn't smack too much of being a homer.
W ell, I can't for the life of me figure out why there is even
a debate in New Jersey where to house a new casino, if
passed. It's like asking if the sky is blue, if Jerry Silva wants
a piece of my 1:51 maiden breaker, or if I won that photo (I
didn't). It should be at the Meadowlands.
I won't bore you with the usual; the "jobs", the labor
intensive harness racing ecosystem, the proximities, the
"greenspace", the spin-offs. Newsflash, if a government
gives millions to a basket weaving industry, it will create
jobs too. If it spends money on parkland, we'll have
greenspace. It's politicospeak and I don't talk that language.
W hat I will say, is that having something world class
matters.
This past year the Minnesota Vikings received $506
million from the cash-strapped legislature in Minnesota for
their new stadium. In football, go down the list, team by
team, it's one of many. It is estimated that up to 70% of all
NFL stadiums have been funded by someone other than the
teams themselves and in many cities, ongoing costs are

paid.
In Indianapolis there's a $100 million bill proposed to help
the Indianapolis Motor Speedway:
"IMS is an enormous, 100-year-old facility. In addition to
the many annual projects to maintain it, we need to make
the Speedway more flexible, more modern and better
positioned to attract more fans to IMS and Indiana," Jeff
Belskus, CEO of the speedway, said in a statement. "It's
really about keeping this iconic facility competitive in the
sports and entertainment world.”
You can examine other industries, or businesses in
certain states and cities, they too receive something from
someone other than their customers if it's considered
"world class.” And most people are okay with it. That's
because being world class in something matters. Does
anyone think running the Indy 500 across the border in
Illinois makes any sense at all?
New Jersey, off the top of my head (and no offense,
Garden State residents), isn't known for much of anything.
If people want to see a hockey game in the area they
would choose the Devils a strong third to the Islanders and
Rangers, I think the Nets play in Brooklyn, and there are a
couple of NFL teams - the Jets and the Giants - but York
follows New in their names. Museums, Broadway plays?
Um, no.
New Jersey, with the Meadowlands Racetrack, is known
(and could be even more well-known) for something,
though: The W orld's best harness racing. It possesses
some of the most storied races, and the facility draws
worldwide fans and horsemen to it. There is no harness
track in the world where more is bet on the races, or where
more people attend the races live each year. I am certainly
evidence of that. I have been to the New York area a dozen
or more times, but I stay in Jersey and my visits to the Big
Apple are bussed or limoed in. That's because of the
Meadowlands Racetrack.
W hy in the world would New Jersey's political class want
to build some nameless faceless casino that looks exactly
like every other nameless faceless casino when they have
the Meadowlands? W hy would they want to lose out on
continuing to make New Jersey the destination for world
class harness racing? W hy would they not want to promote
and foster "world’s best" in something? W here's the pride to
do something more than just build a building?
And I have not even touched on more of the obvious.
In "The demand for slot machine and pari-mutuel horse race
wagering at a racetrack-casino" a study regarding casino
revenue at racetracks, the author concluded:
"Pari-mutuel horse race wagering fell 21% after slot
machines were introduced and 16% following the
introduction of table games. On the other hand, slot
machine wagering increased 13% in the presence of live
horse racing and 14% in the presence of import simulcast
horse racing"
So, you've got a ready-made market, in a great spot, with
solid infrastructure that draws people from all over the
world. Academic studies show that the location will bring in
more revenue than a new stand-alone location. As an
added bonus, revenues that are shared (should be shared,
for heaven's sake) with the facility will increase New
Jersey's brand worldwide, as having the best harness races
on the planet. Races like the Hambo, Meadowlands Pace,
TVG and Haughton would be enhanced, adding to the
brand. Tourism would increase for several races. Live
racing could expand to three or four days a week, again
increasing casino revenue.
And there's still a debate? Seriously?
I am the first to admit I don't understand modern day
politics and certainly don't understand New Jersey politics.
But I like to think I have some common sense. New Jersey,
if a northern casino passes, would be crazy to house that
casino anywhere other than the Meadowlands. Quite
simply: Anywhere else does not make any sense.

Race 7, Open Pace
ART HISTORY looks to complete his journey up the class
ladder all the way to the top tonight and should be favored
to win his seventh straight race. He's turned into a killer for
Elliott and has already beaten most of these more than
once; the rest he may simply be better than right now.
DOVUTO HANOVER drops out of the TVG FFA and won
an Open here back at the beginning of May; will have to do
it tonight with a new driver in Marohn. DOCTOR BUTCH
tripped out to a lifetime best 1:48:1 score here two back
and the 5-year-old is rapidly closing in on the $1 million
career mark; regular driver Tetrick interestingly ends up on
ODDS ON EQUULEUS. BETTOR'S EDGE returns as the
stronger part of the Burke entry and we all know what he's
capable of at his best; makes first start back in a month.
W AKE UP PETER makes his third start back.
Race 8, Graduate Pace
ALL BETS OFF has made over a million dollars between
last season and his four races this year and has done so
going largely unnoticed. Recent Confederation Cup winner
was runner-up last out in the Molson to the older and
classy State Treasurer and Kakaley continues to drive this
one best; warrants a long look in here. DOO W OP
HANOVER is bound to attract tons of attention on the
heels of that 1:47:4 mile last out at Tioga. It looks like he'll
get a new driver tonight and I'm anxious to see if he's that
good again. SOMEW HERE IN LA didn't look ready in his
two starts here in the spring but those two return qualifiers
looked much better; he wouldn't be a total shock. Julie
Miller is yet to figure out LYONSSOMEW HERE.
BUSHW ACKER comes off a career mile at Pocono.
Race 9, The Caramore Pace
MAXI BON won here last year in a sub 1:50 mile and may
be able to beat this group on the memory of that race
alone. That recent try at Philly against All W eek wasn't
bad and he'll have every chance tonight to notch that first
win of the season. ACCOUNT ROLLOVER almost took
them all the way at speed favoring Pocono two back and
picks up Tetrick for Eaton; should be up close early.
ANDW IN HANOVER moves all the way to the inside and
he came up with a couple big miles in similar positions
here last year; not out of the question at a big price.
LADY'S BAG MAN drops.
Race 10, N/W $15,000 L5 Pace
BLATANTLY BEST has been knocking heads of late with
the best horses on the grounds and this is an even bigger
drop than it looks on paper. The 10/1 morning line may
end up being wishful thinking but Goodell gets a shot
tonight and he'll get this one in play. MISTER VIRGIN was
claimed last out by Morgan and has been a hot commodity
at the claiming box lately; he's paced his last three miles in
under 1:50 including a 1:49:4 win three back. ALLSTAR
LEGEND steps up after a race he couldn't possibly close;
6-year-old has loads of class. MISTER TRUTH delivered
last out as an even money promise but he'll need another
ideal trip to repeat against this tougher group. W INDSONG
GORGEOUS was hopelessly parked in his last.

Takter's Dynamic Duo Heads Graduate
Jimmy Takter will look to sweep both divisions of the
Graduate Series in the trotting ranks tonight at the
Meadowlands as he
sends out champion mare
Shake It Cerry in the third
race and champion male
Father Patrick in the 11th.
There will also be two
races for pacers in the
Graduate Series, which is
restricted to 4-year-olds.
Shake It Cerry clearly
Takter on Shake It Cerry:
wasn't herself at the
“She’s back!”
beginning of the year as
she lost her first three starts. But she looked terrific last out
when winning a Graduate leg at Tioga. Takter said the
problem was that she got off her game while they were
attempting to breed her, through an embryo transfer, to
Father Patrick. The process did not work and she will not
have a foal next year.
"She's totally, absolutely back to her old self," Takter
said. "It was wrong of me to try to change the course of
nature and not give her the chance to be a mother when it
was truly her time. I thought it was a smart move because
we most likely were going to keep the foal. It's not that
crazy to try to get a foal through embryo transfer. It just
didn't work and we should have left things alone."
Father Patrick opened his 4-year-old campaign with a
sizzling win over the superstar mare Bee A Magician in the
Maxie Lee at Chester.
"He sure started off his year very well," Takter said. "I
couldn't be happier with how a horse came back. He's a
heck of a horse."
W hen asked if Father Patrick figures to have any serious
competition this year, Takter replied: "He should have a
very good chance of doing very well in the races that are
coming up (the continuation of the Graduate Series and the
Hambletonian Maturity). Later on, he'll have a chance to go
against the older horses. This is America. W e're always
come up with great horses. Anything could pop up."
