Trainer Graham Lewis Won't Give Up His Fight
Against New York Gaming Commission
by Bill Finley
Is trainer-driver Graham Lewis a violent, unhinged
hothead who doesn't belong in the sport, or a
misunderstood, wronged
man who is at the receiving
end of a vendetta from the
New York Gaming
Commission? That will be
the question Tuesday when
Lewis appears before the
Gaming Commission to ask
it to reconsider his last
application for a license,
which was denied. Don't
expect any easy answers
or resolutions next week,
not in a matter that has
dragged on for more than
Embattled trainer Graham
12 years and has become
Lewis
nothing less than a bitter
and ugly battle between a horsemen and a government
agency.
"They are the most dirty scumbags on the face of the
planet," Lewis says of the Gaming Commission. "W hat has
happened to me is completely disgraceful."
Gaming Commission officials are too smart to fire back at
Lewis with such inflammatory language, but they don't have
to. It's pretty clear they really don't like this guy.
Lewis, whose nickname is the "Dragon Man," is from
Wales and came to this country in the early 80s knowing
there wasn't much of an opportunity to make a living in
harness racing in Great Britain. He stayed until Roosevelt
Raceway closed in 1988, when he went back to Great
Britain. But he never lost his desire to be a success in U.S.
racing and reappeared on this side of the Atlantic in 2001.
He was doing fine until 2003, when he had an altercation
with a groom named John Redding which began a
Kafka-esque nightmare for the W elsh trainer that continues
on today and has led to him essentially being banned from
the sport.
As Lewis explains it, he was working mornings as a
bricklayer and did not normally get to his barn at Yonkers
until mid-afternoon. For that reason, Redding was in charge
of the small stable throughout morning training hours.
Lewis became alarmed when a fellow horseman told him
the groom was abusing his horses. Lewis said he
confronted the individual and fired him. That led to an
argument over money Redding thought Lewis owed him for
the work he had done earlier in the week. Lewis decided to
dock him $50 because he was not going to finish the work
week and refused to give the groom that amount even
though, he says, the groom threatened him over the money.
"He said to me ‘If you don't pay me, I will get my money
one way or another.'" Lewis claims.
Lewis says the next morning he came to his barn and
found that another horse in his stable had a stab wound and
that the groom was standing nearby laughing as he dealt
with the stricken horse. He admits he got into a physical and
verbal altercation with the groom and says he vowed the
individual would never see a penny from him. He also
admits that he used a racial slur during his confrontation
with the groom, who is Black.
Lewis moved on, started racing at Plainridge in
Massachusetts and thought the incident was behind him.
But when he applied for a license renewal with the
then-New York State Racing and W agering Board, he
discovered that his troubles were just beginning. His license
was denied.
According to a hearing officer's report from a hearing in
2014 when Lewis again applied for a license, he was denied
in 2005 because there was concern about him having used
two different social security numbers on applications. Lewis

said that he was not a U.S. citizen at the time and instead
of using social security numbers on his applications, he
was using work permit ID numbers and he had more than
one work permit.
But Lewis said the real reason his license was denied
was because Board investigator Joel Levinson told him his
problems would go away if he simply paid off the groom.
Lewis, who admits who doesn't like to buckle to authority
figures, told Levinson it would never happen and argues
that Levinson has had it out for him ever since because he
disregarded his request.
"They wanted me to pay a man who just beat my horse
over the head with a bridle and stabbed another horse in
the leg and came after me and slapped me around," he
said. "You want me to pay him for it? Not on your life. It will
never, never happen."
W ith Plainridge allowing him to race, Lewis could have
slipped off to Massachusetts and let the matter drop. But
he is stubborn, wanted to clear his name and wanted to be
able to race in New York again. W hat followed was an
almost comical game of cat and mouse where Lewis would
apply for a license year after year and the Racing Board
would deny him every time.
W hatever chance Lewis had of being reinstated
diminished severely when his troubles with the Racing
Board boiled over and turned even uglier in 2007. During a
hearing at the Board's offices in Schenectady, Lewis admits
he became agitated and said it was because he was being
berated by Board officials and that they repeatedly lied
about him during the hearing. He slammed his fist down on
a glass table top and broke it.
"W ithout any cause or reason his testimony and conduct
was contemptuous and disrespectful," the hearing officer
wrote in the 2014 report. "There was considerable
shouting, foul language, name calling, the smashing of a
glass table cover, attempted pushing and shoving, blocking
exits from the hearing room, calls to 911..."
"I slapped the table top and it broke," he admitted. "I lost
my temper because (Commission Investigator Ellen All)
lied and she tried to put me at fault. They said I threatened
her by saying ‘I hope you die a horrible and cruel death.'
Those words are wrong. W hat I actually said is ‘I hope you
die as cruelly as you've lived.'"
Those sort of words and that sort of behavior certainly
aren't the best tactics to use when your at the mercy of the
Racing Board and you want your license back. To the
surprise of no one, Lewis's application was once again
rejected.
Rather than give up, Lewis only dug in. He went on a
letter-writing campaign that includes complaints to
Governor Cuomo, the Attorney General and others about
the Racing and W agering Board/Gaming Commission.
Once again, he wasn't exactly making any friends within
the Gaming Commission's offices in Schenectady.
"They continued to hold that against me," Lewis said.
"Every time I go to a hearing, they bring it up, my writing
letters to the governor and the attorney general. That's my
right. This is about my property rights. I have every right to
protect myself and I have every right to complain and right
to write letters."
In 2010, Lewis applied again and was denied. In the
denial, the Racing
Board cited his
"violent
tendencies." Lewis
tried again in 2012.
Same story. In
2013, Lewis tried
again and issued a formal apology to the Gaming
Commission. Though it's not in the hearing officer's record,
Lewis said that Levinson also issued an apology. He
thought that the apologies might have cleared the way for a
license renewal, but Lewis had no so luck.
In the meantime, things got even worse for Lewis. It is
unclear why the Massachusetts Racing Commission had
allowed him to race for several years when he had his
license application in New York denied but the
Massachusetts authorities apparently awoke to his situation
and the typical rules of reciprocity when it comes to licenses
and banned him in 2014.
Lewis went back to the Gaming Commission around the
time of the Plainridge ban and once again asked to have his
New York license back.
Hearing Officer Michael Hoblock Jr. wrote the following in
his report: "The issue now is: is his remorse, good conduct
and apology sufficient to overcome his behavior and

conduct denying responsibility, failing to furnish
documentation when requested and contradicting and
blaming Commission staff for his inability to obtain a
license?" Later on in the same report, Hoblock answered
his own question: "I observed his demeanor throughout the
Hearing and listened to his semblance of an apology. His
apologies were insincere given his outrageous conduct not
only in New York, but in Massachusetts as well. I believe
Mr. Lewis understands the seriousness of his actions–he
cannot obtain a license anywhere in the U.S.–but I do not
believe he is able to be truly contrite. His self esteem will
not allow it to happen."
The license application was denied on "the ground that
his experience, character and general fitness are such that
his participation in racing or related activities would be
inconsistent with the public interest, convenience or
necessity, or with the best interests of racing generally."
Now out of the sport entirely, Lewis is back to working as
a bricklayer and says he will drive in a few races this
summer in Ireland and W ales. W hat he will not do is give
up his fight. He understands that he has not always
behaved perfectly but argues that a fight with a groom that
he alleges stabbed one of his horses and a broken glass
table top he said was worth less than $300 do not come
close to justifying what has amounted to a lifetime ban from
the sport. Aside from his problems with the New York
commission, Lewis's record is basically spotless.
He says this is no longer about anything that he may
have done as far as violation of rules go, his fight with the
groom or the broken table top. He says it has become
personal and that the Gaming Commission is determined to
ruin his career. He recently became a U.S. citizen, which he
believes will ultimately help him prevail.
"According to (Commission lawyer) W illiam Sekellick, he
is denying me a license because he feels I am crazy lunatic
and I beat some guy half to death," Lewis said. "None of it
true. I have a right to defend myself and my livestock and I
have the right to defend my livelihood. I have become a
U.S. citizen and I understand how due process of law
works. How long are you going to punish me for me an
accidental table top breakage that happened eight years
ago? I have never been caught with drugs, my barn is hay
and water, drug free. I have been taught the right way,
taught to condition the old fashioned way.
"They should put this behind them. I paid my dues, you
punished me to fullest extent you can. I know they don't like
me. But you cannot make this decisions based on whether
you like or dislike me. Give me my license and let me move
on.
"This is an abuse of their position, it is malicious
prosecution. They are using me as an example in order to
set a precedent that they can do whatever they want to
whoever they wish without due process of law and just say
no, no, no and deny you."

Lewis says he will re-apply for a license each and every
year, but realizes his only hope to be reinstated is to get a
favorable ruling within the court system. He is confident it
will eventually happen.
"They can't keep doing this to me; they just can't. It's
against the law," he said. "It would be un-American for me
not to keep fighting for my rights. I am fighting evil people."

Maven Second, Creatine Fourth in Final TuneUp For Elitlopp
By Joakim Lindqvist
Gävle, Sweden - Maven finished second and Creatine
fourth - in a fast performance by both - in the H.K.H. Prins
Daniels lopp at Gävle racetrack in Sweden on Saturday.
Though he raced well, Creatine did not do enough to get
an invitation to the Elitlopp.
W inner Mosaique Face set a personal record on 1.51,0,
winning by two lengths and
thereby grabbing one of the
last tickets to The Elitlopp at
Solvalla next Sunday.
“I thought Maven would
win in the final turn. But it’s a
bit funny. She’s doing great
time after time, but there’s
always someone popping
up”, said Maven’s groom
Tobias Gustafsson.

(1). Creatine (4) got a good
start, in line with the winner, but risking a too wide first turn,
driver Robert Bergh took him down to third position on the
inside, at the same time giving space to Maven (7), who
came three wide in the first turn, now placed as third on the
outside after 500 meters.
Maven made a bold attack 800 meters to go, quickly
reaching outside Mosaique Face with 500 meters to go.
They were side by side in the final turn, just where
Gustafsson had his highest hope. At the same time,
Creatine got racing room, some lengths behind, and Bergh,
for a moment choosing way, came on the inside again,
down the homestretch.
In this second performance in Sweden, changes had been
made on Creatine. He got an open bridle and raced
shoeless on all four. And now, compared to the
performance two weeks ago, it was a huge difference. He
and Maven were close in the finish, just as they were in the
two major races at Meadowlands in November. Creatine is
on his way up.
But the start of the race today was delayed after the post
parade. Mosaique Face had to adjust his equipment. This
was a similar delay that Bergh earlier said had gotten to
Creatine two weeks ago, and misgivings arouse.
“On the whole, Robert was satisfied with the race today.
He found Creatine smoother and might have finished third”,
said Creatine’s groom Therese Sjödin.
Reflecting expectations, Maven was the early morning
pick in 9 out of 20 newspapers today. Creatine the pick in 3
of them, as well as winner Mosaique Face.
Last year in May, Mosaique Face won the Sweden Cup at
Solvalla racetrack, the day before The Elitlopp, also over
the mile. The Sweden Cup is widely nick-named as “The
little Elitlopp”.
Today, gaining a ticket to this year’s Elitlopp, Mosaique
Face is ready for the big suit.
Mosaique Face hadn’t entered the winner’s circle in 12
races before today; there had been almost a year without a
victory. He spent time in France this winter, and Maven
raced against him there. They were both contenders in the
Prix d’Amerique at Vincennes in Paris.

“He’s had a heart-condition, not that serious, but there
has been problems. But I’ve never doubted in him. Today
he was really eager to race and the task for me was to stay
put in the bike. Today’s win was important to me,” said
winning driver Lutfi Kolgjini.
W eather conditions were just perfect today. Partly sunny
and less windy by the time for the race. Gävle racetrack is
known to be one of the quickest tracks in Sweden.
Mosaique Face’ time today is also a track record, close to
the national record set by Commander Crowe.
And Maven is in best condition, indicated by her two last
races.
“She had a good pulse after the race today. Both Jimmy
and Johnny were satisfied. W e chose today’s race instead
of a tough work. Now she will go back to Jägersro
racetrack and then up to Solvalla racetrack on Saturday.
She has no trouble traveling and we want her to have her
own box and spelling paddock. Jimmy will try her in a work
at Jägersro on Thursday”, said Tobias Gustafsson.
At this moment just one invitation remains for The Elitlopp
2015.
Today Per K Eriksson’s Royal Fighter was invited, and
that after his impressive win at Solvalla on Wednesday.
For the two eliminations of The Elitlopp 2015 there will be
a public draw in the central of Stockholm this Sunday. The
fields are available shortly after that.
Sebastian K Misses Meadowlands Qualifier With
Ulcer
Expected to make his first appearance on a racetrack
yesterday, Sebastian K was pulled out of a qualifier at the
Meadowlands because of an ulcer.
“It’s not a big deal, but he probably won’t qualify for a
couple of weeks,” assistant trainer Bernie Noren said.
Noren said the original plan was to find an overnight race
to serve as a prep for the June 26 TVG at the
Meadowlands. Instead, the prep is likely out and Noren said
the new plan is to go right into the June 26th race off
qualifiers.

Atomic Million AM Returns for $125,000 Series
at 3R
TROIS-RIVIERES, QC (May 23, 2015) Atomic Million
AM, an 11-race winner in 2015, make his return to the
Hippodrome 3R Sunday in the opening round of $125,000
Quebec-Bred Series.
The series features three weeks of elimination
competition culminating with the $35,000 finals on Sunday,
June 14.
A four-year-old gelded son of Million Dollar Cam, Atomic
Million AM won over $110,000 last year, a decent size
portion of that coming in this series. In 2014 he also took a
lifetime mark of 1:50.3 at Mohawk Raceway.
He heads the fifth race older horse division and starts
from post three for driver Sylvain Lachalle. So far in 2015,
Atomic Million AM, has been razor sharp with two wins and
two seconds in his four starts.
A winner in two of his last three starts, Atomic Million AM
is owned and trained by Alan Martin of Gatineau, QC . They
are the overwhelming favorite in the race. Other contenders
include My Lucky Bluejeans (post two) and Victor Bayama
(post 8).
The first of two Quebec-Bred Series opening rounds for
mares is the second race and featured is Victoria Semalu in
post four.
Unraced last year, this four-year-old mare has come
about for Dany Fontaine. Just three weeks ago she took her
record with a 1:53.4 triumph at Rideau Carlton. She will face
stiff competition from Lutetia Semalu (post 6) and Cambec
Lindor (post 2).
The sixth race second division is an excellent matchup
with four return winners in the field.
The race favorite is Champagne Shower, who is coming
off a lifetime mark of 1:52.1 at Mohawk Raceway and has
won two of her last three starts for trainer Yves Tessier. A

Sears Sweeps Pair of Elims for Art Rooney Pace
By Frank Drucker
Publicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway
YONKERS, NY (May 23, 2015) Brian Sears was the man
about town Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway’s
pair of $40,000 eliminations for the 25th Art Rooney Pace.
A total of 13 3-year-old gentlemen—11 colts and two
geldings—began the night, with the first four finishers in
each elim getting a pass through the velvet robe into the
stakes finale.
Sonofa Sizzle (Brian Sears) in 1:52.1
Sears took of the first event with a first-up Sonofa Sizzle
($9.90) in 1:52.1. He held off Betting Exchange (Dave
Miller) by a neck after the front end folded. The front end
came in the form of 6-5 favorite Soto (Brett Miller), who
worked around Arque Hanover (Jason Bartlett) and threw
down intervals of :27.2 :56 and 1:24.1.
Meanwhile, scourge of Delaware Sonaofa Sizzle, from
post position No. 3, had engaged the leader before putting
him away. He held off Betting Exchange, who was
three-wide early before slipping out in the lane. Cartoon
Daddy (catch-driver Dan Dube) was a never-threatening
third, with Arque Hanover, despite breaking early in the
lane, finished fourth to get into the final.
A tiring Soto and an outrun A Bettor Hat (George
Brennan) rounded out the order.
For second choice Sonofa Sizzle, son of Life Sizzles
owned by Michael White and trained by Josh Green, it was
his fourth win in five seasonal starts. The exacta paid
$81.50, with the triple returning $190.
“He did everything I asked of him,” Sears said “It helped
that they mixed it up a bit early, but he was very sharp.”
Let’s not gloss over the “interesting” effort of Arque
Hanover, who, in the words of his date, was a victim of too
much pace and no place to go.
“I was overloaded,” Bartlett said. “He was definitely a
winner. He had so much pace, he started getting crooked
on me and made a break. It’s shows how good he was that
he came back and made the final, anyway.”
The second elimination saw odds-on choice In the
Arsenal ($2.50), whose debutante effort came in last
season’s Lawrence B. Sheppard Pace here, barely prevail.
Leaving from post No. 2, he gave the first lead to Rock N’
Roll W orld (Dube) before a 28-second opening quarter-mile.
In the Arsenal then moved to the lead, completing his
rounds (:57.2, 1:26, 1:53.1). Rock N’ W orld, now a
runner-up in all four races this season, tried In the Arsenal
in the passing lane by missed a head.
National Seelester (Dave Miller) and Bet You (Brett Miller)
also earned their invites to return, while Rolling Ring Afire
(catch-driver Tyler Buter), Western Pioneer (Brennan) and a
breaking Penji Hanover (Mark MacDonald) completed the
order.
For In the Arsenal, a son of American Ideal trained by
Kelvin Harrison for co-owners (breeder) W hite Birch Farm
and In the Arsenal Racing, it was his second win in as many
’15 tries. The exacta paid $10.20, with the triple returning
$16.
“He’s more mature mentally and physically than he was at
2,” Sears said. “In elimination races, you have to race a
favorite as if he’s the favorite, so I put him on the lead. He
knows what he’s doing out there.”
The $300,000 final of the Rooney goes next Saturday
night (May 30), along with the six-lass $117,724 Lismore
(3-year-old pacing fillies). The open draw for both stakes
takes place late Tuesday morning.
Saturday’s $42,000 Open Handicaps were won by:
- Trot: Luminosity (Brennan, $6.50) in 1:54.4
- Pace: Duc Dorleans (MacDonald, $16.60) in 1:51.3.
No one took down the Saturday Pick 5, so Monday’s
gimmick begins with a carryover of $4,501.50 and offers a
$10,000 guaranteed pool (program pages available on the
Yonkers website). The Pick 5 is a 50-cent base wager
comprising races 7 through 11 every racing program. The
Raceway’s live season continues Memorial Day evening
(7:10 PM), Tuesday (1 PM, pair of finals in the Jackpot Next
Door Claiming Series), then Thursday through Saturday (all
at 7:10 PM). Note there is no live racing or evening
simulcasting June 3-12, inclusive. Afternoon simulcasting is
available daily, including the June 6th Belmont Stakes.
Barn Doll best in Vernon NY Sire Stakes
By James Witherite (Vernon Downs racing media)
Vernon, NY - Sent off the prohibitive 2-5 favorite, Barn
Doll ($2.90) sustained a push to the fore on the far turn,
drawing clear for a 1:54 triumph in her $40,600 New York
Sire Stakes event for 3-year-old trotting fillies on Saturday
(May 23) evening at Vernon Downs.
The daughter of Conway Hall and Headintheclouds
settled in midpack early on, as Magic City (Jeff Gregory)
cleared the lead through a :28 initial quarter. On the
backstretch, Jimmy W hittemore angled Barn Doll
second-over behind the cover of Frou Frou (Jim Morrill, Jr.),
but was ultimately left uncovered after a :57.2 half mile as
Frou Frou cleared. Despite no longer having the aid of
cover, Barn Doll continued progressing, pushing clear on

the far turn and drawing clear of Frou Frou by 3-1/2 lengths
in the end. Stirling Debutant (Rick Zeron) sustained a
move on the far turn to take third, just missing Frou Frou in
a late battle for second.
Trainer Steven Pratt co-owns Barn Doll with Nancy Pratt
and the Purple Haze Stables.
Lock Down Lindy ($3.80, Rick Zeron, 1:54.3) and
Concentration ($10.00, Chris Lems, 1:56.3) also proved
victorious in their Sire Stakes divisions.
Vernon Downs is dark for racing on Sunday, but hosts a

Sophomore Pacing Colts Debut Impressively in
Indiana Sires Stakes
By Emily Gaskin
ANDERSON, IN (May 23, 2015) Indiana’s three-year-old
pacing colts were in the spotlight at Hoosier Park Racing &
Casino on Saturday, May 23 to square off in the opening
round of Indiana Sires Stakes action and as predicted, the
sophomore colts opened their series in impressive fashion.
Freaky Feet Pete and W iggle It Jiggleit, considered two of
the top pacing colts for 2015, both delivered in their
respective eliminations.
Making his 2015 return to the races, Freaky Feet Pete
picked up right where he left off as he found the winner’s
circle in his sophomore debut, winning in 1:50.3. Driven by
Trace Tetrick, Freaky Feet Pete used a :27.2 final panel to
coast home a winner by two lengths.
Freaky Feet Pete
settled well off the
early pace, retreating
to fifth while the rest
of the field battled for
early position through
first half fractions of
:27.1 and :55.4.
Freaky Feet Pete
began his quest to
the front just past the
half and reached the

turn.
After reaching the three-quarter pole in 1:23.1, Freaky
Feet Pete found his best strides late in the lane and cruised
home to notch his first victory of the season. The 1:50.3
final time equals his career best.
“I think his best attribute is that he’s very versatile, on the
front, off the pace, it doesn’t really bother him,” driver Trace
Tetrick noted after the race. “Great horses do great things
and that’s what he is. He’s come back great, he’s fresh,
he’s ready to race, and he loves his job.”
Voted Indiana’s two-year-old pacing colt of the year,
Freaky Feet Pete has now won 10 of 11 career starts and
earned $271,950 for owners Mary Jo Rheinheimer and
Marty Rheinheimer. The son of Rockin Image-Skyway Lori
is trained by Larry Rheinheimer.
In the very next division, W iggle It Jiggleit, fresh off his
world record setting performance, made his Hoosier Park
debut a winning one to remain undefeated in nine starts.
W ith regular pilot Montrell Teague in the sulky, W iggle It
Jiggleit made a powerful move down the backside and
cruised to the wire seven lengths in front of his competition
in 1:50.3.
The world champion took off the speed early in the mile,
but made a controlled move to the lead and cleared just
before the half-mile mark through fractions of :27.1 and
:55.3. W iggle It Jiggleit led the field through the
three-quarter split in 1:23.3 before beginning to put his
talent on display.
As the rest of the field struggled to stay within striking
distance, W iggle It Jiggleit was racing the clock. Finishing
well within himself at the wire, the son of Mr. W iggles-Mozzi
Hanover coasted to the wire with his earplugs still in-tact.
“I don’t want to put him on the front every time, he’s
versatile and I think he can go any way,” driver Montrell
Teague noted in the winner’s circle. “I could have taken him
back to last and he probably would have done the same
thing. Racing him off pace just teaches him that he has to
calm down a little bit, and now, hopefully, we’ll be ready for
next week.”
“He’s awesome, his attitude, his intelligence, he just does
everything right,” Teague continued. “It’s a pleasure to be
around a horse like him and to go those kind of miles every
week. I didn’t even pop the earplugs tonight.”
W iggle It Jiggleit became the fastest-3-year-old pacing
colt on a half mile track in history when he romped to a 1:49
victory at Harrington Raceway on May 11. He is conditioned
by Clyde Francis and owned by George Teague Jr. W ith the
victory, W iggle It Jiggleit’s career earnings surpassed the
$100,000 mark.
Trainer Jon Anderson teamed up with driver Rick Plano to
double up in the other two divisions of the stakes action.
The Anderson-Plano scored first with My Buddy Ninkster in
the opening split and followed up with Rockin Ron scoring in
the final division.
After finishing second in his last two outings, My Buddy
Ninkster rebounded to find the winner’s circle when it
counted in 1:51.1. Benefitting from a pocket trip, My Buddy
Ninkster was able to overcome the tempo-setting Harfo
Hanover and Tony Hall late in the lane.
Sired by Dali, My Buddy Ninkster recorded the fourth
victory of his sophomore campaign while establishing a new
lifetime mark in the process. Owned by John and Mary
Krasnican, the son of Dali-Sporty Ellie has now earned
$46,553 lifetime.
In the final division of the stakes action, Rockin Ron kept
his winning streak alive as he recorded his 5th consecutive
victory at Hoosier Park in 1:51.2. The Jon Anderson trainee
dictated fractions of :27, :55.2 and 1:23.2 before powering
home a winner.
The son of Real Desire-Im All A Roan is now 5 for 5 this
season and six for 15 in his career. Owned by Ronald
Phillips, Louis Leinberger and Jesse Ferge, Rockin Ron has

earned $58,300 lifetime.
All four of the evening’s elimination winners successfully
earned a spot in the first of five $75,000 Indiana Sires
Stakes final slated for May 30 at Hoosier Park. W ith a daily

'Ali' Streaks Into New Jersey Final
Courtesy of Meadowlands Media Relations
East Rutherford, NJ - Hurrikane Ali continued to impress
with another effortless win in the $25,000 second leg of the
New Jersey Sires Stakes at The Meadowlands on Saturday
night.
The son of Rocknroll Hanover was away patiently for
Yannick Gingras as the field passed the quarter in 26.4 but
once the dust settled Gingras moved him to the front and
the race was effectively over. Hurrikane Ali closed out the
1:50.1 mile with a 26.2 final quarter and sets up an
interesting match up with Artspeak (who skipped the
second leg) in next Saturday's $100,000 final. John
McDermott, Jr is the trainer of the winner for owners Kuhen
Racing, Jonathan Klee Racing, Dr Ken Rucker and Robert
Pucila.
Gokudo Hanover was a length and a quarter in arrears
for second with Edward Teach third.
The filly pacers also completed their preliminary leg
obligations and W icked Little Minx scored a mild 10-1 upset
in a front stepping career best 1:51.1 effort for driver Tim
Tetrick. W icked Little Minx was left alone on the lead
through friendly fractions while favored Stacia Hanover was
mired in traffic and left with too much to do at the end
despite her ferocious 26.2 final quarter rally.
Trainer Nancy Johansson was racing W icked Little Minx,
also by Rocknroll Hanover, for only the second time since
she took over the duties for owner Courant AB of Sweden.
Information on next week's NJSS finals will be available
on the SBOANJ website.

Gural on 4-Year-Old Races, Meadowlands Casino and
“Chemicals Elsewhere.”
I read Dean Hoffman’s story and I totally agree that we
need races for 4 year olds. Having said that, we
resurrected the Graduate Series with the first leg at Tioga
on Sunday followed by two legs at the Meadowlands and
the final for each gait going for $250,000. In addition, we
have the Hambletonian Maturity for 4 year olds, which I
believe last year went for over $400,000. W e also reached
out to all of the major tracks to see if they wanted to
participate and they all politely declined. W e also have
created the TVG series for older horses at the end of the
year and we are putting $200,000 of our own money into
the purse for these races and my guess is we are the only
harness racetrack in North America that is putting their own
money into a major stake. I think this weekend we are
already seeing the benefits of the Gural rule because I
would assume the race at Chester with Father Patrick
against Bee A Magician and several other top older horses
will be the most anticipated race so far this season.
On a more important matter, I am working very hard to try
to get the Legislature to put a constitutional amendment on
the ballot this November which would allow casinos outside
of Atlantic City. If it does not happen by the end of the
month it cannot happen as there are certain deadlines that
have to be met so the next 35 days are critical. W e believe
the referendum would pass narrowly this year but would be
defeated next year so if we cannot get it on the ballot this
year we would have to wait until 2017. If it does go on the
ballot and were to be defeated we have to wait another
three years so it does not make sense to take a chance
next year during a presidential election. Anyone living in
New Jersey who has a relationship with their state senator
or assemblyman should reach out and tell them how
important this is. I have been invited to participate on a
panel next Thursday in Atlantic City at the East Coast
Gaming Conference. All of the major opponents of allowing
gaming in the North will be on the panel and I have been
told I should pull out but I am not a coward and I will take
my chances. I think we have a winning argument. W e are
also planning a press event on W ednesday, June 3rd at the
Meadowlands to introduce our project to the public and the
local politicians. I am confident that people will be
impressed.
One last thing, I would appreciate it if people would enter
their horses at the Meadowlands for the remaining two
months of the meet as we have taken a major financial hit
due to all the short fields. I recognize that the purses are
higher elsewhere but there are only two months left in the
meet and you do get the advantage of not having to race
against the chemists that seem to be prevalent elsewhere.
Please, if you live in New Jersey now is the time to speak
up as the next 35 days are critical.
Jeff Gural
The Real Stars are the Owners
I think we all can agree on one thing, our industry,
harness racing, is in trouble. I've thought of yet one more
thing we can do that just might help turn things around.
Lets make the "stars" of our industry ... the owners. After
all, it is they, that invest enormous amounts of money in
order to get a horse to races.
Sears, Tetrick, Pierce, Campbell, and the Millers (both
David and Brett) are the names the public knows. And of
course, when it comes to trainers, who doesn't know Ron
(continued on next page)

Burke and Jimmy Takter? These are the "stars" of our
industry. And while I do not want to infer that our trainers
and drivers are not talented individuals that deserve
recognition, this recognition might serve us better if it was
reserved for our numerous industry banquets. The people
that raise their hand at a yearling sale or plunk down
money for a "ready-made" horse in a claimer deserve to be
recognized more, and ... recognized more publicly.
W e need to find ways to make investing large sums of
money...and not getting much to show for it...an ego boost.
Sincerely,
Monica Reschke
Father Patrick-Bee A Magician Showdown
Looks Like Race of the Year
By Bill Finley
All the elements are in place not just for a good race but
a great race. Today's $150,000 Maxie Lee Memorial at
Chester includes a Hambletonian winner, a Horse of the
Year, last year's champion 3-year-old male trotter, last
year's champion older trotting mare and more. But most are
billing it as a showdown between Bee A Magician and
Father Patrick, and with good reason. The two have never
met, one is a female, one is a male, and both are super
horses.
Bee A Magician, the
2013 Horse of the Year,
will likely be the favorite,
something that was
unthinkable in a race of
this caliber after she won
just four of 17 starts last
year. But she's come
back firing on all cylinders
Can the super mare Bee A
at age five and is 3 for 3,
Magician beat Father Patrick
with all her victories this
today at Chester?
year coming against
males.
"She's not only tight, but she's on her game," trainer Nifty
Norman said. "I think she's going to get a lot of respect."
Bee A Magician is coming off a two-length win in the
Cutler last week at the Meadowlands, where she beat the
Elitlopp bound W ind Of the North. It was still another sign
that this is not the same horse that lost 13 races last year.
"I don't know if it was the traveling or what the year before
took out of her," Norman said. "The bottom line is I think
the expectations were what hurt her the most. She was so
good at three and everyone expected her to do it again.
Physically she just wasn't as strong last year as she is
now."
Having drawn post three, inside of Father Patrick (post
five), Bee A Magician, who will be driven by Brian Sears,
figures to be able to dictate how the race plays out on the
track. Norman believes that could be a big advantage.
"I think so, it is a plus," he said. "The three is probably the
optimum draw at Chester. The draw is a big deal there. The
inside is definitely not the best draw, but where she is, just
off the rail, is a good spot and Brian will get to dictate what
he wants to do from there. I am sure Yannick (Gingras) will
be on the move with Father Patrick and maybe Classic
Martine will be also or someone else. There will be some
action early, but Brian will be able to do what he wants to
do."
W hile Bee A Magician has been busy beating up on the
boys, Father Patrick has not only been training but
breeding, a rare dual duty for a top U.S. horse. He has had
three qualifiers this year and trainer Jimmy Takter said his
horse will have his mind on his business, not on his sex life.
But the fact that this will be Father Patrick's first start this
year could be another advantage for the mare, Bee A
Magician.
"On paper, yes you would say so, that she has that
advantage over him," Norman said. "But you know how
Jimmy is. He will have that horse right on his toes. But
there's nothing like racing to get horse tight and ready."
Norman emphasized that no one should overlook the
other mare in the race, Classic Martine. She, and not Bee
A Magician, won her divisional Dan Patch Award last year
with nine wins from 18 starts. She's two for three this year
with a win last out against males in an Open at Pocono.
"I think she is getting overlooked," Norman said.
"Basically, we couldn't deal with her last year and there's no
reason to think she won't be tough again."
The field also includes Lindy's Tru Grit, DW 's NY Yank,
2012 Hambletonian winner Market Share, Melady's Monet
and Bourbon Bay. The Chester card also includes the Jerry
Taylor Invitational for older male pacers and the Betsy Ross
Invitational for older female pacers.
