Though Dealt a Serious Setback, Star Swedish
Trainer Bergh Ready to Tackle US Racing

Top Swedish horseman Robert Bergh, who will be
training a string of horses in the U.S. for the first time, is
looking for someone to oversee seven two-year-olds based
in Florida following the sudden passing last month of
60-year-old Ken Oscarsson.
Speaking from his training base in Travstall, Bergh told

Everything was going like I'd hoped when we started, so it
was very sad what happened with Ken. It's tough to figure
out now."
Either way, Bergh plans to control the operation from
Sweden.
"I've had discussions with a couple of people to see if
they are interested and how they would do it," he said. "I
may have an answer in three or four weeks. But I don't
want to talk more about that because I don't want to say
their names."
W hen asked if he would consider hiring fellow
countryman Jimmy Takter, who last year was voted the top
trainer in the U.S. for the fourth time, Bergh said:
"Absolutely, but I think he would like to train the horses
himself."
Bergh just returned to Sweden from a 10-day trip to
Florida to oversee the horses' training at Sunshine
Meadows. He had been making regular trips to watch the
horses every five to six weeks prior to Oscarsson's sudden
passing. Following Oscarsson's passing, his brother asked
retired trainer Mario Zuanetti to help jog the horses.
Bergh horses were bought during or after they went
through the Lexington Sales. Two of the horses,
Songndance Hanover (Donato Hanover) and Curious De
Vie (Credit W inner), are owned by Daniel and Henrik Sedin
of the Vancouver Canucks. The two colts are the most
expensive of the seven - Curious De Vie was purchased for
$160,000 and Songndance for $105,000. The other five are
Luck By Lindy (Lucky Chucky), All Of The Time (Donato
Hanover), Muscle Hustle (Muscle Mass), Cantab The Man
(Cantab Hall) and Keep It Classy (Yankee Glide), who is
the only filly among the seven.
Unlike some past Swedish trainers who have come to the
U.S. and stayed - most recently Åke Svanstedt, who made
quite a debut last year guiding Sebastian K to a Dan Patch
Award as the top Older Male Pacer and whose stable won
68 of 326 starts and more than $2.3 million - Bergh has no
plans to come to America and set up shop.
"I don't want to move to the USA," he said. "I only want to
try to train young horses there and hope some of them can
go in the bigger races there. I like the USA very much.
Every year I have a holiday in Florida. I like to race there
after Adrian Chip (placed second) in the (2007)
Hambletonian and did well in other races."
Adrian Chip raced his two-year-old year with trainer Todd
Schadel and then Per Henriksen, setting a world record
with a time of 1:55 3/5, winning an elimination of the Matron
at Dover Downs. The horse went on to win the race, and
was later sold on behalf of German owner Ernst Gerbaulet
to Bergh for the ownership group called the 3 Pucks Stable
that included NHL star Peter Forsberg.
"I had a great time with Adrian Chip," Bergh said. "I liked
it so much I wanted to come back with some more horses

to race. W hen I started discussions about it with my
owners, they had horses in France and Sweden and they
wanted to try (racing in the U.S.) it with me. W e were not
100 percent sure how to do it. W e had discussions with
Ken and came to a deal with him, so we were ready to buy
horses in Lexington. Many of my owners (from Sweden and
France) wanted to have a horse in the USA.
"I want to see if I can get good results with young horses
like in Sweden and France."
Henriksen, a 69-year-old Norway native who has been
based in North America since 1980 and trained Nuclear
Kosmos to win the 1986 Hambletonian, said he is not
surprised Bergh has no plans to move his stable full-time to
the U.S.
"Horse racing in Sweden is a pretty big deal," Henriksen
said. "The trainers and drivers are treated like hockey stars
are in Canada. It's tough to be the big shot there and to go
and be just one of the guys in North America. He likes his
glory."
He also said Bergh will discover the way that trainers
develop two-year-olds in North America is the opposite of
the way it's done in Europe because of the push to take
advantage of the purses.
"Over (in Sweden and France), they don't race a lot of
two-year-olds," Henriksen said. "Even if they buy them as
yearlings, they might not race them until the middle of their
three-year-old year. That's just the way it is. That's the way
owners expect and that's the way everybody is brought up.
"The biggest challenge I found in North America when I
got started on my own after working for Howard Beissinger
a couple of years before that is it's a requirement (by the
owners) that these two-year-olds come out to race.
"But know this: his owners are European so they might
not be that demanding. European owners are much more
patient than American and Canadian owners."
Maven Second in Sweden

JÄGERSO, SWEDEN - Maven finished second on
Saturday in the L.C. Petersons-Broddas Minne at Jägersro
racetrack in Sweden. She was defeated by 10-year-old
Noras Bean, former winner of the Prix de France in 2014.
Maven made a bold move on the backstretch, coming
three-wide from the position of fourth on the outside, but
had no cover between 800 to 400 meters to go.
Noras Bean won by 1 ½ lengths in the time of 1:52.4

(mile rate). The race was contested at one five-sixteenths
miles.
"I was a bit surprised that Noras Bean was so strong,"
said Maven's groom Tobias Gustafsson.
Maven was a big favourite on this day, just as she was
when winning at Solvalla racetrack two weeks ago. She
was the early morning pick in 19 of 20 newspapers and a
banker in 8.
Maven's race was the seventh on this day, and so far, all
except one was won by the early leader. Maven had a post
position in the second tier (10), while Noras Bean had a
post position in the front tier (2).
The outside conditions were just perfect. A clear blue sky,
high temperature and a very quick track.
"No complaints," said Gustafsson with just one minute to
the start.
After 500 meters Noras Bean was on the lead, in a high
pace, and made the first lap in 11.5. It was a constant high
pace all the way. W ith the track favoring speed, there were
no major changes in the running order.
Maven was biding her time as fourth on the outside.
Maven kept the pace all the way in.
"Thumbs up for her today," Gustafsson said. "And Johnny
was satisfied, jogging her around the track after the race.
He likes her, and she's now standing in the box as if she's
not raced at all."
Maven got a really quick work before Solvalla two weeks
ago. This Tuesday she was prepared much easier with
1.24/2100 meter with cover. Johnny Takter said she was
calm – and eager.
At Solvalla she showed a bit more spirit in the warm up
so Gustafsson then changed her bit. Today she was more
calm in the warm up, but still had the same bit as at
Solvalla.
"Maven was more controlled today," said Gustafsson.
Maven is not off for Italy in the beginning of May. She has
accepted a wild card for the Olympic Trot at Åby racetrack
in Gothenburg, April 25. The Olympic Trot is the first major
race in Sweden this year for international trotters, with
$170,000 to the winner.
There Maven will face, among others, Voltigeur de Myrt,
who finished second in the Prix d'Amerique in January.
There is also Digital Ink, who she met in last year's
Elitloppet at Solvalla, and On Track Piraten, who won the
Prix du Luxembourg at Vincennes, also in January.
And, of course, the today's winner Noras Bean has
earned a spot in the race but likely won’t make it as he was
lame after the event and did not go to the winner’s circle.
"He's got a heart of gold, but this does not look good," said
Noras Bean's trainer Ulf Stenströmer.
On Maven, Strenströmer said: "I was impressed by
Maven at Solvalla, where my Your Highness tried to reach
her, when she broke stride. She'd never done it anyway.
But Noras Bean is a better horse than Your Highness."
Solvato, the full brother to Shake It Cerry, who raced

against Maven several times in France this winter, and
while there spent his time at the same farm as Maven, was
withdrawn today, due to a stretched muscle. Solvato won
the Olympic Trot last year and as a title-defender, he's got
a free ticket to the race in two weeks.
"Maven is much smoother today than she was in France,"
Gustafsson said. "There, she could twist her head slightly
to the left, but at Solvalla she kept her head straight, and
she did so again today."

Penultimate Levy Prelim Round Written in
Triplicate

YONKERS, NY (April 11, 2015) - Saturday night's fourth
round of Yonkers Raceway's George Morton Levy
Memorial Pacing Series, despite missing some old, familiar
faces, played out in a trio of intriguing events.
Pole-sitting W indsong Jack (Brian Sears, $6.20) won the
opening, $50,000 division, getting by Mach it So (Tim
Tetrick) late and edging way by a length-and-a-quarter in a
season's-best 1:52.4. Mach's Beach Boy (Pat Lachance)
was third.
It was 9-5 favorite Bettor's Edge (Yannick Gingras)
making the lead and setting sail through intervals of :27.2,
:56.4 and 1:23.4. Eventually tackled by Mach it So, the
leader broke in the final turn. W indsong Jack was able to
extricate himself, then go past a stubborn Mach it So.
For second choice W indsong Jack, a 5-year-old
Santanna Blue Chip gelding traiend by Jennifer Sabot for
owner Little Bapa LLC, it was his second win in eight
seasonal starts (1-for-4 in series) The exacta paid $19.80,
with no triple wagering offered due to the short field
Odds-on choice Take it Back Terry (George Brennan,
$2.90) had few issues in the second division.
Quarter-moving from post No. 2, "Terry" stole way a cheap
second quarter (:27.1, :56.4), then easily held sway (1:25.2,
1:53.1) by a no-issues three-quarters of a length. A solid,
first-up effort from Frankie's Dragon (Sears) found him
getting second, with Fat Man's Alley (Jason Bartlett) third.
For "Terry," a 6-year-old W estern Terror gelding
co-owned (as Burke Racing) by (trainer) Ron Burke,
Weaver Bruscemi, Larry Karr and Phil Collura, he's now
4-for-12 this season (2-for-3 in series). The exacta paid
$23.40, with the triple returning $84.
The evening's final series event saw a contested front
end involving Clear Vision (Gingras) and Lucan Hanover
(Tetrick). The former rebuffed the advances of the latter
(:26.3, :54.1), with 7-10 choice Michael's Power (Dan
Dube) in behind.
The early fractions made this a closer's contest, and after
a 1:23 three-quarters, the back of the bus was heard from.
A from-last Heez Orl Black N (Sears, $29.20), starting
outside his five foes, prevailed in a hands-and-knees
(:30.1) final quarter. He whipped another longshot in
National Debt (Eric Carlson) by a length in 1:53.1. Lucan
Hanover held third despite a brutal trip, while "Michael"
wound up last.
For fourth choice Heez Orl Black N, a 7-year-old Down
Under gelding trained by Anita Vallee for co-owners Shaun
Vallee and D P V Racing Stable, it was his fourth win in 11
'15 tries. The exacta paid $323, with the triple returning
$1,457.
It should be noted that P H Supercam and Beach
Memories, sitting 1-2 in series points after three rounds,
were both given this round off for good behavior, while
Foiled Again, looking to regain his near-$7 million form,
also was not entered.
Series standings, through fourth leg…1-P H Supercam
(225 points), 2t-Beach Memories (200), 2t-Michael’s Power
(200), 2t-Take it Back Terry (200), 5t-Fat Man’s Alley (187),
5t-W indsong Jack (187), 7-Polak A (175), 8-Sapphire City
(170). Finals for the Blue Chip Matchmaker and George
Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series are set for Saturday,
Apr. 25 (purses for both TBA).
Note that since no one took Saturday night’s Pick 5,
Monday’s gimmick begins with a carryover of $4,361.40
($10,000 guaranteed pool).
The Raceway’s live season continues Monday night (post
time 7:10 PM), Tuesday (1 PM, second round of YR/SOA
of NY Bonus Trotting Series), then Thursday through
Saturday (all at 7:10 PM, with Matchmaker and Levy series
continuing Fridays and Saturdays). Evening simulcasting
available around all nighttime programs, with afternoon
simulcasting daily.

American Rock Captures Youthful Final

CAMPBELLVILLE, ON (April 11, 2015) - American Rock
turned in a gritty effort to win the $37,000 Youthful series
final Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack.
A solid group of ten three-year-old pacing colts and
geldings lined up Saturday evening for the final of the
three-week Youthful series.
Legion Of Boom, the 4/5 favourite, came into the final on
a three-race win streak and had a chance at a series
sweep.
The action was hot right from the start, as the first-quarter
saw a trio of horses battle around the opening turn.
Dialamara, who was three-wide, would come away with the
lead as the field entered the backstretch.
American Rock, who got away fourth, came charging first
up in the second-quarter to engage Dialamara in a duel.
American Rock would eventually clear to the lead at the
mid-way point, but not after a rock-solid half-mile clocking
of :55.1.
Around the final turn, Team Captain was pressing at the
leader first up, while Legion Of Boom was placed
second-over. American Rock posted a third-quarter of :28.1
to reach the three-quarter pole in 1:23.2.
In the stretch, American Rock dug deep and would not
allow his rivals to get by, as he reached the wire first in a
career-best 1:52.
Dialamara came up the rail to finish second by a length
and a quarter, while Pantheon Hanover made a rally on the
far outside to finish third. Team Captain, who was beat less
than two-lengths, and Legion Of Boom had to settle for
fourth and fifth, respectively.
A son of Rocknroll Hanover, American Rock is trained by
Ben W allace for owner Brad Grant. The sophomore pacing
colt came into Saturday’s final off a 1:54.1 victory in last
week’s second leg and had finished second by only a head
in an opening leg division on March 28.
American Rock, who did not race as a two-year-old, now
has a record of five wins from eight starts and earnings of
$57,250.
The W allace trainee returned $7.10 to win.
In order to be eligible to the Youthful series, the
three-year-old pacing colts and geldings had to be
non-winners of three-races or $15,000 in 2014.
Father Patrick’s Little Brother Wins
Meadowlands Qualifier
Hambletonian nominee W hom Shall I Fear, who is a full
brother to Dan Patch Award winner Father Patrick,
captured a qualifier yesterday morning at the
Meadowlands. W ith trainer Jimmy Takter driving, the son of
Cantab Hall went in 1:59.1 and won by a length over
Workout W onder, who is also Hambo eligible.
W hom Shall I Fear sold for $475,000 in 2013 at
Lexington. He went 0 for 5 last year, but Takter has said he
still believes the horse has a bright future.
Takter is also hoping for better things from Canepa
Hanover in 2015. The Muscle Hill colt costs $300,000 at
the sales but was just 1 for 6 last year. He broke stride in
his qualifier yesterday and finished fifth. His race was won
by W icker Hanover, who is not Hambletonian eligible.
Mac Nichol’s Colt is Fourth in Arkansas Derby
Madefromlucky, the colt co-owned by prominent harness
owner Mac Nichol, finished a distant fourth in yesterday’s
Arkansas Derby. The race was won in a romp by American
Pharoah, who turned in one of the most impressive
victories in a Derby prep races in years.
Madefromlucky appears to have enough points to earn a
starting slot in the “Run for the Roses,” but, if he goes, will
be among the longer shots in the field.

Foal Shortage...Maybe Less is More
After reading a variety of opinions concerning why there
is a foal shortage, most will agree that primary reason is
that the lesser mares and stallions are not being bred
because the breeders and owners of these horses cannot
make money.
Then I hear ideas as to how this can be remedied. I have
to admit, I did find this amusing. How to save the horses
who are not self-sustaining. Is there any other business
who tries to improve the worst part of their business instead
of concentrating on the area that is profitable and increase
that ? Do we really want to save the equivalent of 5 to 15
claimers so there are enough horses to fill a card so the
track can make money?
Like any other business the strong survive. W e should
not try to revive the class of horse that for the most part
cannot break even. Instead, less may be more. I realize the
tracks need a certain amount of races and handle to be
profitable. W hy not try cards that are 8 or 9 races? Open
the classes to have more horses eligible to attract bigger
fields. Have 3 or 4 options for each class. Each race should
have 12 horses.
I realize the negative of saying the lower class horse
won't be competitive. Take the lesser class eligibles who
entered and have them draw to choose their post. The
others would be in the open draw. Increase the purses
accordingly so horsemen wont scream .This can be done
because you have eliminated a few races and these 12horse races will have larger handles then 6 and 7-horse
fields. This may not work but it may be worth a try.
I seriously doubt the horse shortage will be reversed.
Breeders are not in this to lose money. A vast majority or

owners are in this for the passion and fun. That said, no
one stays in a business to knowingly lose money forever .

Bob Marks Weighs in on Foal Shortage
In all my years breeding, marketing and selling Perretti
horses, I was always aware of the cost factor involved.
Years ago, we'd figure $15,000 over stud fee was the break
even point in getting the yearling from conception to
market. Nowadays I'm sure it's more.
Last I looked, somewhere in the vicinity of 75% of all
yearlings sell for $25,000 or less which means the
remaining 25% have a lot of dead weight to carry up the
elusive hill of profit.
W hile most yearling buyers are really seeking that super
stakes colt or filly, and will pay handsomely for what they
perceive to be a top prospect, there's not enough of them
to offset the cost of producing those animals that will
eventually populate the overnight classes at the racetracks
. Consequently, breeders manufacture, and often take
back horses like our own Rockeyed Optimist, Fanticipation
and Rockaround Sue that become productive earners while
the handful we do oversell can't balance the bottom line.

Foal Shortage? The Solutions Are Complicated
Does anyone really think that the doubling of an $8,000
purse to a $16,000 purse for a maiden race will make a
long term impact on harness racing ? Yes, the winner of
that race could be paid $4,000 more, but their future racing
career would remain the same. I doubt yearling buyers
would be chomping at the bit to collect a few more dollars
in a maiden race with all of harness racing’s other
problems.

Bring Back the Show Survivor Contest
Everyone is aware that simulcasting handle is super
important to a track's total handle these days. For years
people throughout the U.S. played the Survivor Contest at
the Meadowlands on their computers. Thousands of people
used their handicapping skills each racing day in the hope
of winning one of the few prizes. This March the contest
was dropped with nary a word of explanation. I wonder
why? W hen a bettor from Anywhere U.S.A. is interested in
a race at the Meadowlands in the contest, isn't it logical to
assume that he might also place a wager on that race?
