A Casino at the Meadowlands: Is it Finally Governor Chris Christie, another politician who long stood Going to Happen? in the way of a casino at the Meadowlands, has recently By Bill Finley come out in support of building casinos in the northern part EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.–On Wednesday, Jeff Gural of the state. Christie's only concern at this point seems to unveiled his dream, a lavish casino at the Meadowlands be that some of the revenue from North Jersey casinos be run by the Hard Rock Company that would bring in turned over to support the ailing casinos in Atlantic City. In boatloads full of money and, no doubt, revive his racetrack. Now, the question has become, can Gural and his partners order to woo Christie and key South Jersey politicians, those behind the Meadowland proposal have signed off on turn this into a reality? the idea of funneling part of their profits to Atlantic City. What Gural and Jim Allen, the CEO of Hard Rock, hope Polling suggests that the gambling referendum would to build is a facility that would have 5,000 slot machines, indeed pass. Gural said it's imperative that the referendum 200 table games, a get to the ballot this year because it will be much easier to New Jersey Music have it approved in a year in which there is not a Hall of Fame, the presidential election. mandatory "Our concern is that in 2016 against a presidential restaurants and bars election our message gets lost among all other election and, they say, bring stuff," Gural said. "Also, the costs of getting the message in $400 to $500 out become much more expensive because of what they million in annual revenue to the state. can charge for ads during a presidential election. Jim and I have talked about spending between10 and $20 million to "We're not looking get our message out to voters." to build 'slots in a Jeff Gural busy pushing for a In order for a referendum to appear on the November, Meadowlands casino (Lisa photo) box,'" Allen said. "We 2015 ballot, lawmakers must come to an agreement on the l certainly understand we need to build a world-class product." Wanting all this and getting it are two different matters, but everyone involved at Wednesday's press conference at the racetrack expressed confidence that not only will it be done but that a casino could be open at the track within a year. "We will work together to make sure this moves ahead," said Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, one of several politicians on hand to voice their support for bringing a casino to East Rutherford. “The Meadowlands is the place for a casino in New Jersey and we are here to see this becomes a reality." State lawmakers must now work together and agree on an amendment that would allow casino gambling in the state beyond the city limits of Atlantic City. It's a crucial step and cannot happen unless Senate President Steve Sweeney signs off on it. Long a staunch supporter of Atlantic City, Sweeney has hinted of late that he will support casino expansion in the state but has yet to come out with a firm position. That Sweeney did not attend the press conference was seen as a bad sign by some observers in attendance. "I have spoken to Steve Sweeney, "Gural said. "I probably wouldn't be here if Steve didn't encourage me to build this place. He's been supportive of the horse industry and I think he recognizes what has happened with the Meadowlands. Steve's biggest concern is that (an amendment) has got to pass (when voted upon by the electorate). No one wants to see it go on ballot and be HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 6/05/15 PAGE 2 of 10 anguage and get the referendum done quickly, perhaps as soon as within 30 days. The other key question that remains to be answered is how many casinos will be allowed outside of Atlantic City? Various politicians have talked about there being as many as three casinos, all of them fairly close together in the northern region of the state. Some say there should be only two, but the idea of allowing the Meadowlands to have a monopoly outside of Atlantic City seems to have lost all momentum. "I don't have a problem with two. I think three is too many," Gural said. The other proposal that seems to have meaningful support is a $4 billion project in which a casino would be built near the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. However, those behind that project say it would take up to four years to build. While Gural said he would still prefer to be the only casino game in town, he may actually fare better if there is a second casino. According to sources, he has been given assurances that his tax rate will drop dramatically, from 55 to 25 percent, if he has any nearby competition. SBOANJ President Tom Luchento said he has been assured that if there are casinos in addition to the Meadowlands the others will also be required to contribute to horse racing. As far as what a casino at the Meadowlands would do for racing in New Jersey, no one has yet to come up with precise numbers, but virtually everyone agrees that it would be a tremendous boost for the sport. "I will say this, we will have the highest purses in the sport," Gural said. "Our purses will be higher than Yonkers, Pocono, Chester. We'll be back to where we were in our prime when we had the highest purses." Gural said the goal is to have 10 percent of the revenue go toward racing, half of which would be earmarked for thoroughbred racing. He projected that $40 million would be available for purses, $20 million for each breed. With $20 million added to the purse accounts, purses at the Meadowlands would more A rendering of the proposed than double. Hard Rock Casino at the "When it happens it will Meadowlands be very good for us," Luchento said. "I don't know amount we will get; that will be negotiated later, maybe in enabling legislation, but certainly we will have a lot of money to work with." Luchento and Gural have long been allies in the battle to bring a casino to the Meadowlands, but one thing they figure to spar over, if there is expanded gaming, is the amount of racing dates. The Meadowlands currently runs only 81 cards a year and Gural said Wednesday he does not see a major expansion in that area. The Meadowlands is offering the short series’ listed below to accommodate those three-yearold trotters and pacers who will have no state-bred stakes in which to race over the next few weeks. The NJSS program has concluded, the NYSS/Excelsior 3YO trotters have no stakes scheduled until late June and the PASS/Stallion Series pacers have a lapse in their schedule for the last three weeks of the month. These races require no nomination, enter the horses by the time listed on the next Meadowlands condition sheet and they will be filled as the entries come in. I don't think there are enough horses to race any more than that. We can't look at the number of mares being bred and just ignore it and pretend it doesn't matter. It's unrealistic to think just because we might get money we can race five days a week." "No business can run on 81 days a year," Luchento countered. "We have to expand it when we get the money. We understand that if the money is not there you can't do it. In the future when the money comes it's absolutely imperative that we expand days. You can't have people stay here year round and expect to just race 81 days, and on weekends alone." The dates question doesn't figure to be the only contentious issue. Who will get what when it comes to dividing up the money will also be hotly debated. One thing that is clear is that there will be a lot of slices to the pie as those in line for a piece include the state, the track operator, the casino operator, the thoroughbreds, Atlantic City, the sire stakes, Freehold and, perhaps, others. "Everybody is going to have their hand out," Luchento said. "Yes, that is a concern. Everyone is arguing now over how much they're going to get and we don't even know how much is involved. It will have to be ironed out." share story Robinson Faces Uncertain Future After Hit With Another Positive Drug Test Less Than Three Months After Ending Two-Year Retirement By Perry Lefko Controversial Canadian-based trainer Bill Robinson has been hit with another positive drug test, less than three months after he returned to racing following a retirement of more two years and a ban at Woodbine Entertainment Group's tracks for more than 11 years for repeated drug violations. Nickle Bag, a five-year-old gelding owned by Linda Loyens and brother-in-law Harry Loyens, tested positive following its last race, May 30 at Mohawk Racetrack. The horse finished seventh by six lengths in a field of eight in a $34,000 Preferred race, sent off at more than 17-1 odds. Speaking to Harness Racing Update, the 68-year-old Robinson said he has been told by the Ontario Racing Commission that the horse tested positive for ephedrine, which is commonly found in cough medicine to treat coughs, congestion, sore throats and air irritations due to colds, flu or hay fever. "I can't explain where it came from, I can't explain who gave it," Robinson said. "We (have done) nothing wrong here. These horses, I'll just tell you straight up, when I came back they were racing like they came out of their mother. I didn't want to take any chances. This is just a total shock and I'm not over it yet. This is the most serious thing that has ever happened to me. It couldn't be any worse." Robinson was slated to talk to the Ontario Racing Commission judges Thursday night at Mohawk Racetrack he has a horse, Machnbyrd Princess, in the final race on the card - at which point he will find out more about the matter, in particular the length of the suspension for the positive and whether he can ask for a split sample or appeal. When asked if he will want to fight for his right to continue to race, he said yes but added: "This is going to be a tough fight. I don't know what (WEG) is going to do. If I can't race at (WEG), it's over. You can't race at these small tracks. It's the beginning of the end racing at these small tracks." Nickle Bag, which had won five of 20 races and more than $155,000 this year, has been suspended for 90 days, which is normal procedure Just three months into for a positive test. Nickle Bag his comeback, Bill started to flourish as a Robinson has been four-year-old, racing 47 times, socked with a positive winning 11 and earning $226,070. He was trained by Robinson's son, Shawn, throughout his career until his father ended his retirement, largely because WEG allowed him back. Shawn exited the business, and his father began training the stable and had immediate success with the horses. Nickle Bag took a career mark of 1:49 4/5 in his fifth-last race. The owners were so enthusiastic about the horse that they nominated him to the Canadian Pacing Derby (August 29 eliminations) and the Breeders Crown, October 17 (elims). Harry Loyens told Harness Racing Update he hadn't had a chance to talk to Robinson because he'd been away at his cottage. "I have no idea what happened," Loyens said. "Bill has always done a good job and I like the horse. I don't know what else I can say until I talk to Bill. He might appeal this. I can't make any statements just based on hearsay." Robinson has turned over the horses he is training - about 20 in all - to some other trainers. He was able to race Machnbyrd Princess because it had already been entered prior to the positive test. One of his horses, Good Friday Three, owned by William A Mackay, David Serwatuk and HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 6/05/15 PAGE 4 of 10 Robin Watts, is entered Saturday at Mohawk in a division of the $75,000 Somebeachsomewhere Stakes - a major tuneup for the North America Cup elimination races - for three-year-old male pacers. It has been turned over to trainer Robert Fellows. "I shouldn't have to go through this," Robinson said. "In my own mind, we did nothing wrong. Something went wrong along the way. I'd like to apologize to the horse industry and WEG. That's very important. We shouldn't have to read this. I was just getting back in the groove. I was just starting to enjoy it. To get something like this, it's unbelievable. "I was just starting (to get rolling). I didn't set the world on fire, but it wasn't bad, either. It was good. It's tougher now than it was years ago." Robinson has 13 wins, 14 seconds and 15 thirds in 102 starts and earnings of almost $300,000 since his return. In his final two years before retiring, he only had 95 starters. There were owners who supported Robinson all along during his absence and were there when he wanted to start again. "I've got Tom Hill (as an owner). What a perfect gentleman he is and he knows the horse business," Robinson said. "We get along really well. I get along good with Bob Hamather. That's all you need. Good owners and good horses. You've got to have good owners. I've talked to them all, but there's not much you can say. I don't want to beg anybody for anything. They are shocked. I think they know I had nothing to do with it. We're on such a strict schedule around here. I was in complete shock when it happened. I hit the floor when I got the message. It's bloody well embarrassing. People must know I would never, ever try and do that - not with the situation I was in. "I don't want to say it was sabotage because I don't know." WEG banned Robinson in November, 2003 after one of his horses, Flight Plan, revealed a reading beyond the prescribed limit for TCO2 (Total Carbon Dioxide). On December 20, 2003, the ORC slapped Robinson with a five-year suspension and a $100,000 penalty. He appealed it, and the matter led to a series of four separate ORC hearings in which Robinson tried to get WEG to overturn its decision. On April 20, 2004, Robinson agreed to suspensions totaling 27 months and a fine of $125,000. Robinson set a North American record with more than $11 million in earnings in 2002. The next season, his stable won more than $10.8 million. He turned the horses over to his sons, one of whom, Brett, had a career high of more than $3 million in purse earnings in 2001. But he was slapped with a 10-year suspension and a $40,000 fine in August, 2007 after one of his horses tested positive. He subsequently exited the business. Shawn continued to train until he decided to leave when his father returned to training. share story Missed an Edition of the HRU? The Molson Pace night program produced an all-time wagering record of $610,000 for the 12-race program, which was up more than 50 percent from last year’s total of $404,000. Wagering on the race itself rose sharply from $132,000 in 2014 to $196,000 on this year’s contest. On-site live wagering saw a healthy $126,000 put through the windows, up 26 percent year over year. State Treasurer made history by becoming the first ever to capture three straight titles in the event since it became the Molson Pace back in 1992. His 1:51 clocking was a stakes record and just one-fifth off of the overall track record at the London oval. Overall wagering and per race wagering at The Raceway were both up close to 20 percent over last year’s totals. “We made a significant change with our post times this season, switching from a mid-afternoon product to a night time product with a 6:15 p.m. post during the week,” explained Racing Manager Greg Blanchard. “We thought the timing was right to make the change and it’s encouraging to see the numbers support that. I’d like to thank the customers and horse people that supported us once again throughout the season and we look forward to some exciting announcements ahead of the upcoming season.” © Copyright Harness Racing Update. HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 6/05/15 PAGE 5 of 10 Nichol's Stable Of Stars Making Noise In Thoroughbred And Standardbred Industry By Perry Lefko On Saturday Mac Nichol will be at Belmont Park to watch one of his horses race in the Belmont Stakes and the following Saturday he will be at Mohawk Racetrack hoping another horse will qualify for the North America Cup. Such is the world of the Canadian horseman who has diversified equine portfolio that has Mac Nichol’s Belmont resulted in him winning some major Stakes hopeful stakes races in both breeds, and Madefromlucky why he's becoming known in the thoroughbred world as the standardbred guy who got lucky. Nichol will be represented in Saturday's $1.5 million Belmont Stakes in New York with Madefromlucky, which he owns in partnership with Cheyenne Stables having sold a 60 percent interest in the colt earlier this season when the horse was creating interest on the road to the Kentucky Derby. The horse has a lifetime record of three wins, two seconds and a third in eight starts and earnings of $378,000. One percent of his winnings are going to The Stable That God Loves, which is a major fundraiser for the Standardbred Chaplaincy of Canada. He is the only thoroughbred among the horses whose owners have committed to the charity. Madefromlucky was purchased by Nichol as a two-year-old for $150,000. Nichol, a Canadian businessman who owns Ideal Training Centre near Mohawk Racetrack, sold 60 percent of the colt to Cheyenne for a significant six-figure sum. He's certainly lived up to his name. Madefromlucky will be a long shot to win the mile and one half dirt race, although he did win the Peter Pan at the same track three weeks ago and is bred to run long. He's lost twice to American Pharoah, who will aim to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Many horses have gone into the Belmont since with a chance to sweep the Crown and failed along the way. Madefromlucky is Nichol's first thoroughbred purchased at auction - he previously had some claimers - and this will be his first time at Belmont Park. He and his partner skipped the Derby because the horse wasn't training well at Churchill Downs. "It would be a thrill of a lifetime to win (the Belmont)," Nichol said. "We know there's tough competition in there. American Pharoah is going to be a pretty tough one to beat unless it's a bad trip. It would be a great feeling to win the Belmont, that's for sure. He's the type of horse that likes to go a long way and he's finally getting a really long race. It's a big test for him. We hope he can race a big race and finish second or third. Finishing second to American Pharoah would be a big thrill, too, because we know he's probably the best horse that's been around in the last 25-30 years. "It's very special for me purchasing him on my own and the first time at a thoroughbred sale that I bid on a horse. To have a horse that has done what Lucky has done and make it to the Belmont you can't ask for much more than that, that's for sure. "This is a very special race because it's a new experience for me. I wasn't into buying young thoroughbreds. I feel very lucky. It's not easy to go to a yearling sale, thoroughbreds or standardbreds, but especially thoroughbreds, and end up with a horse of this caliber and do what he's done so far. That makes it so much more special. "Some of the people in the thoroughbred industry have said, 'Holy cow, how did you do that?' What are the chances of the first one you ever picked and getting one like that? It's unheard of.'" If American Pharoah wins, the whole industry will benefit from the exposure. If another horse wins, it will be a huge letdown. But it's a horse race - a huge one at that - and Nichol didn't want to concede it without at least trying. "If you've got the horse that can do it, why wouldn't you want to win it?" Nichol said unapologetically. "Maybe a lot of people will be upset or let down if American Pharoah loses. People have said to me, 'Holy crap if you won that race, you'd have a lot of people that would be upset because that knocked the horse out of winning the Triple Crown.' "I respect the horse and what he's done. His chances are good to get the Triple Crown, but if he is going to get beaten by a horse in there, it would be nice to have the one that could do it." Madefromlucky has faced American Pharoah twice so far and lost both times, finishing second and fourth. "It's been a privilege and an honor to race against him. I'd be quite thrilled to finish second to him again, especially a horse like that," Nichol said. Nichol has been asked in media interviews about his standardbred background. He has been a partner in horses that have won the North America Cup, Little Brown Jug, Maple Leaf Trot and Breeders Crown. He has two horses that are being pointed to the North America Cup, June 20 at Mohawk. One of them is Arque Hanover, a $130,000 yearling purchase whom Nichol owns in partnership with three others. The Rock N Roll Heaven colt finished a close fourth in the final of the Art Rooney last Saturday. So regardless of what happens in the Belmont, Nichol will put on his standardbred cap and start thinking about winning the NA Cup. Nichol also has a homebred, The Spy, who is paid up to the Cup. Nichol is reminded of the first standardbred star he had, American Ideal, whom he had high hopes for heading into the 2005 NA Cup. Nichol had been racing the colt in Western Canada and shipped him east to the Toronto circuit for his sophomore season and gave him to trainer Casie Coleman. "When she got him, she said 'this horse is going to make me a big trainer - and he did that,'" Nichol recalled. "She loves winning and she does a super job." American Ideal drew poorly in the final of the NA Cup and HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 6/05/15 PAGE 6 of 10 was not a factor. He also had poor starting posts for the Meadowlands Pace and Breeders Crown and didn't fare well. But he had a good season overall, winning 10 of 22 starts, including the Provincial Cup, Confederation Cup, Bluegrass and Tattersalls, set a few tracks records and recorded a speed mark with a world record time of 1:47 4/5. "That's when everybody was after him to stand him at stud and that's when I sold 50 percent of him to Blue Chip Farm, and that's where he's been standing ever since," Nichol said. American Ideal has gone on to become a major stallion. Based in New York, he has sired five consecutive millionaires and five Dan Patch and/or O'Brien Award winners, including world champions American Jewel and He's Watching. He is the sire of this year's $300,000 Art Rooney winner In The Arsenal. Race 7, N/W3 Trot LOCK DOWN LINDY showed a ton of promise last year as a freshman for trainer Alagna and now makes her fourth start back on the year on the heels of a solid NYSS score last out at Vernon. She couldn't get to #9 a couple back here but could very well turn the tables tonight; classy filly. TWO HIP DIP will be tough to beat if he trots but that's become a big question in recent weeks. Speed is his game and has the gender and age advantage over the top choice; short price. CODE BON broke last out in his first start back but that race was a tall task regardless; there could be some potential here for Svanstedt. JUSTIN ON BROADWAY outraced his odds last week and warrants a longshot look. Race 8, F&M Open Pace You could argue that WEEPER is the best mare in training right now and she's looked like a monster in both her starts this season since moving to the Takter barn. That :25:4 final quarter two back was amazing and her most recent win was never in doubt; looks to beat these soundly once again. Just when you thought INITTOWINAFORTUNE was tailing off she won two back at 12/1 in a career best 1:49:4. She does look to be in a bit too tough once again but she continues to step up and fire. JERSEYLICIOUS faltered last out at Philly but she tends to do her best work here in anyway; has early speed if the driver wants to use it. Betsy Ross champ RADAR CONTACT had a week off after that win and now lands the outside post; her and #6 have split their last four matchups together. ROCKLAMATION is in need of a turnaround at age 7. Race 9, N/W $5,000 L5 Trot WHOWHOHOOSIER goes for a barn that has notched some noticeable wins over the past couple weeks. This one qualified against some class a week ago at Philly and a flat mile will give him a big shot in here. CARNEGIE was in against much better here earlier in the meet and this is the appropriate level; an obvious short priced contender. GENIUS AT WORK will take some play coming from the Julie Miller barn. BLUEBIRD KIDSQUEEN looks nothing like the mare we saw win here a bunch of times last year and CAPTAIN PRIMEAU will have to turn back the clock from post 10. Race 10, F&M N/W $15,000 L4 Pace TABLE TALK held her own a number of times last year against some of the sports best sophomore pacing fillies and wasn't disgraced last out in the Betsy Ross at Philly. This one just missed to a top Allard piece at Miami Valley three back and Bart Dalious has a nice mare here; beats these. BEACH STORY zipped home in :26:3 last week and is good enough to repeat on the step up. MARTY PARTY always deserves respect at this level but in the past couple seasons most of her wins have come on the smaller tracks; not an easy spot from out here. Last year's Crown champion SAYITALL BB wasn't bad two back and is still seeking that winning form. $9 ticket ($0.50 base): 3-9 / 5 / 3-5-6 / 4-7-9 $36 ticket ($0.50 base): 3-5-9 / 5-7 / 3-5-6 / 3-4-7-9 Saturday at Mohawk Race 5. $78,767, Pace. D-Jeff Gregory, $27,062, Lifetime Record: HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 6/05/15 PAGE 9 of 10 Three year old trotting fillies were featured on Thursday at Saratoga Casino and Raceway as the season’s first installment of the New York Sire Stakes took place at the Spa. The defending stakes champion Barn Doll (Conway Hall) was the start of the show as the trotting star set a track record on Thursday. The Steven Pratt-trained filly made a power move late in the mile and scored a 1:55.3 victory in her division of the $54,125 Sire Stake. A winner of seven of nine races as a freshman in ’14, Barn Doll is now two for three in 2015 after her record setting performance. Jeff Gregory piloted the afternoon’s fastest trotting filly to her stakes score. Barn Doll, who moved her career earnings to over the quarter million dollar mark in just twelve lifetime starts, is owned by Steven and Nancy Pratt and the Purple Haze Stables, LLC. The sophomore standout bested the previous mark for three year old trotting fillies set by Market Rally last year. Other winners of the $54,125 stakes races on the card were Katniss (Credit Winner) for trainer-driver Ake Svanstedt and Jewels In Hock (Credit Winner) with Hall of Famer John Campbell in sulky for conditioner Linda Toscano. 2, VD, $10,000, P, OPEN I (Post Positions Assigned By Earnings Last 5 Starts), 26.4, 57.0, 1:24.4, 1:52.3, GD Golden Receiver (g, 10, Village Jove--Royal Gold, by Towner's Big Guy) O-Our Horse Cents Stables & Golden Receiver LLC.
