Regional Network Selects 20 New
England School to Participate in New
Personalized Learning Initiative
Harwood Union is one of twenty schools in the League of
Innovative Schools that have been selected by the New
England Secondary School Consortium and the Great
Schools Partnership to participate in the Personalized
Learning Initiative grant. After a lengthy application process
that included attending a summer design institute, a
comprehensive site visit, and two detailed submissions that
outlined our current work along with our plan to address the
distinct learning needs, interests, and aspirations of all
students, we received notification of selection. The
initiative’s goal is to help the selected schools remodel their
academic programs to ensure that every graduate is
prepared to succeed in postsecondary education, modern
workplaces, and adult life.
For the next two years, the Great Schools Partnership will
provide Harwood Union with a team of school-improvement
specialists—commonly called “school coaches” in the
education community—who will help the Harwood
Leadership Team, teachers and staff implement our plan.
Our plan includes how Harwood will successfully implement
the components of ACT 77 – the Flexible Pathways Initiative
and Vermont’s new Education Quality Standards for
Proficiency-based Graduation. Additionally, it includes the
areas of community engagement and policy development.

HUHS PARKING REMINDER:
Senior and Junior students who have completed the parking
information sheet, been approved for parking, and have a parking
permit are the ONLY students eligible to park in the HUHS AND
Dowsville Road parking areas.
We have a limited number of parking spaces available and it is appreciated if all respect
these guidelines. Students who obtain their license during the school year, and
have a vehicle available to use, MUST speak with Nancy Myrto or Seth Marineau
for parking availability before driving to school.
Sophomores SHOULD NOT drive to school and utilize either the HUHS or
Dowsville Road parking areas AT ANY TIME as parking is a senior and junior
student privilege ONLY. Sophomores caught parking in these areas will be given a
warning and, if persist in driving and parking at school, may forfeit their ability to park
during their junior and senior years. We understand having a student drive to school
lessens the burden on parents/guardians, but due to limited parking there must be a
definitive cut-off point. Sophomore students have also been granted a parking privilege
for a day if there are extenuating circumstances. These exceptions need to be
approved with Seth Marineau or Nancy Myrto prior to the day needed. Seniors and
juniors have waited their turn for this privilege and we ask sophomores to respectfully
wait theirs. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Are you interested in the Chinese Language & Culture?
The College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont invites motivated
students to apply to the federally funded StarTalk Vermont Chinese Language Program.
StarTalk Vermont is a one-week Chinese immersion residential summer program for high
school students entering grades 10-12. The program will be held at the University of Vermont.
Program details:
Dates: August 1 to August 7, 2015
Location: The University of Vermont
Residential: Yes! Students stay on dorms, and eat on campus
Cost: The $250.00 tuition fee covers the cost of housing, meals, snacks, and learning materials.
Financial Aid is available to all students who qualify.

Project Graduation's hockey game fundraiser in the high
school front office. HUHS Annual Project Graduation fundraiser
Hockey game between Waterbury Ice Center board members and
staff as well as Harwood Youth Hockey Association board
members and coaches and Harwood Union H.S. and M.S.
students to be held Saturday evening, April 4, at 5:00pm at the
Waterbury Ice Center. Tickets are $3 for anyone over age 6 with a
maximum of $10 per family. All proceeds to benefit Project
Graduation 2015.
Host Families Needed!
Sergio is a 16 year old boy from Mexico with a passion for tennis. He loves to
participate in tournament and trains many hours (about 15) a week. Tennis is a
central part of his life. Sergio is also very committed to his Catholic faith and it is
important to him to be able to attend church regularly while he is here in the US. He
regularly participates in volunteer work in his community. He is an excellent student
with a 3.90 GPA . Sergio has specifically asked to spend his year in the
Northeast. He arrives in August and is here for the 2015-16 school year. For more

Is your family passionate about soccer and willing to share your home with a great
young man from Spain next school year??? Esteban is a 15 year old from Spain with
a passion for soccer. He is a keeper who reports that he has been playing
professionally since he was 7. He parents also report that he has had much success
playing soccer and currently plays for an important club team. Soccer is very
important to him, but he does love many sports. He is also an excellent student with
a 4.0 GPA and very solid English skills. Esteban is a bit frightened of animals and
would be best in a home without pets or one with pets that are very gentle. If you are
a family who can support his soccer passion and are willing to provide him with a
supportive and loving home please be in touch. Esteban is scheduled to arrive in the

The Harwood Coordinated School Health team will be hosting a Technicool
Parent/Student Seminar on Tuesday, April 7th from 6:30-8pm in the Harwood Library.
What is TECHNICOOL?
• A technology safety program designed by Prevent Child Abuse for Vermont youth in
grades 4-12, their parents, guardians, caregivers, and educators
• TECHNICOOL encourages digital citizenship and promotes healthy online
relationships.
• An interactive presentations-TECHNICOOL provides its participants with the
resources and tools needed to create a positive social media presentation
