From Harwood Art teacher Krista Connolly:
Hi Everyone!

handful get awards (first, second, third, honorable mention, judges choice, and peoples
choice).
Here she is with Peter Welch and her mother.

Harwood’s Citizen Scientist
Nancy Spencer
Nancy’s career in teaching began over 35 years ago. She taught health at Mount Abraham
High School for 6 years before being hired at Harwood Union in 1985. Initially she was as
a high school science teacher, and then, in 1987, she became the 7th grade Life Science
teacher; this has been her niche for the last 28 years.
For Nancy, the Life Sciences are a means for humans to interpret the natural world and
understand their sense of place in it. Her passion for the natural world has been
expressed through teaching, and she has dedicated her energy and knowledge to
providing students with experiences that require them to observe, question, and use
empirical evidence. It has been her mission to inspire curiosity in every learner.
Nancy has strong roots in the Valley, and her love of the outdoors and the natural beauty
of this area have significantly influenced her teaching. Not only does she want her
students to know and appreciate their sense of place in the natural world, but to be citizen
scientists; that is to have an understanding of the relationship between humans and the
environment, how they impact each other, and the responsibility citizens have in protecting
and caring for their surroundings.
To this end, Nancy has been involved in many local projects with her students including the
Trout Project, Wildlife Habitat monitoring, and the Mad River Watershed Project. Through
partnerships with the Agency of Natural Resources, Friends of the Mad River, and the
University of Vermont, Nancy has connected her students to real world experiences –
experiences that provide students with knowledge and skills that they will be able to apply
in their local communities for the rest of their lives.
In thinking about her next phase of life, Nancy is excited to study “mindfulness: a
contemplative study in education, do yoga and continue to make those small, everyday
contributions that bring a better quality of life to her and those around her.

As many of you know, Harwood alumna Grace Potter started a great music
festival here in VT called Grand Point North.
This year, Seven Days is holding a contest to see which local VT band will
perform at the festival. Our very own Harwood Assembly Band has thrown
their name in the hat and we hope to rack up some votes. Your vote means a
lot! It would be amazing to have our students chosen to represent us (and VT)
at this incredible festival.
How you can help:
Vote for the Harwood Assembly Band (link below)! And spread the word by
