New MyLink with Enhancements
• Bluetooth – Enables hands-free phone operation and
audio and video streaming.
Impala’s new MyLink system retains the basics of the
Malibu MyLink system and adds new features that provide
expanded customization, enhanced control and even
greater connectivity. Key enhancements include:
• USB port – Plug in, play and control USB-compatible
iPods, MP3 players and music files stored on a USB port
through the Impala’s audio system.
• Larger 8" color touch-screen.
• SD card reader – Play and control files stored on an SD
card through the Impala’s audio system.
• Control much like an iPad. You can flip through pages and
grab and move icons.
• Auxiliary input jack – Plug in and play iPods and
MP3 players.
• Customize the screen with any of four different themes
that change the look of both the color touch-screen
on the center stack and the 4" screen in the
instrument cluster.
• Auxiliary power outlet – Plug in and operate
laptops, video players and other devices with the
suitable connection.
• You can move icons and programs between the 8" and
4" screens.
• 120-volt power outlet – Household-style outlet for

shift gears.

lower gear when decelerating or coasting on a downgrade
to help save brake wear.

2.4L ECOTEC DOHC SIDI I4 w/ eAssist
Active Noise Cancellation
• Same fuel-saving powertrain used in Malibu Eco.
On the 2.5L engine, this technology generates sound waves
through the car’s speakers that cancel low-frequency noise
generated at between 1000 and 1500 rpm. Here's how
it works:
• 182 hp, 172 lb.-ft. torque.
• Estimated 25 city/35 highway mpg.
• Availability: Fall 2013.
• Three small microphones measure the amplitude and
phase of the engine noise and relay it to the car’s Active
Noise Cancellation Module.
New Intake Variable Valve Lift
2-mode valve actuation technology that improves fuel
economy, low-speed torque and peak power.
• To ensure that only unwanted engine noise is targeted
(as opposed to the radio or passenger conversation), the
module factors in engine speed and then calculates the
target sound frequency to cancel.
This advanced technology is currently found only in
Impala’s 2.5L engine. It changes valve lift, duration and
timing when opening intake and/or exhaust valves during
engine operation.
• Module generates a sound wave with the same amplitude
as the engine noise, but with an inverted phase.
When more power is needed, such as during acceleration,
passing or high speeds, the high-lift mode brings more air
into the cylinders for more power.
• Sound wave is directed through the car’s front-door
speakers and rear subwoofer.
When less power is needed, such as during normal driving,
the low-lift mode reduces throttling, which improves
fuel economy.
• The two sound waves are commingled and cancel out
each other.

steering is quieter, more engine efficient (no powerrobbing pump) and more fuel efficient (uses power only
when you’re turning).
4-Wheel Disc Brakes
• New split, dual-circuit system with vented front and solid
rear discs.
• Electric power steering can be precision-tuned. This
allows smooth, precise steering through a variety of
driving conditions.
• Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) applies
optimum braking force to all four wheels simultaneously.
This provides maximum vehicle stability under
heavy braking.
• Mounting the steering motor directly on the steering rack
instead of on the column reduces slippage. This results in
more direct steering response.
• Brake Assist adds braking pressure for shorter stops
during emergency braking.
• New variable assist varies steering effort depending upon
speed—more assist at lower speeds, less at higher speeds.
This provides more steering control in all
driving conditions.

and other sound-cancelling measures give Impala a
quieter cabin than Taurus.
• More leg room. With an almost 4" leg room advantage up
front and nearly 2" in back, customers will find it easier
to stretch out and relax in the new Impala than in the
refreshed Taurus.
• More head room. Almost 1" more up front than Taurus.
The 2013 Taurus is a refresh of its 2010 design. Sheet
metal changes are most visible up front, with Ford’s new
trapezoidal grille and a more prominent hood. The biggest
change is under the hood. While the 3.5L V6 remains the
standard Taurus engine, Ford hopes most customers will
opt for the new 2.0L turbocharged (Ecoboost) 4-cylinder
engine. A $995 added cost, the new engine develops 240
horsepower, 270 foot pounds of torque and an estimated
22 city/32 highway MPG. This engine is also standard in the
new Ford Escape.
• Power steering column adjustment w/ memory. Both the
power adjustment and seat/mirror/column memory are
available on Impala. Neither is available on Taurus.
• More comfortable seats. Impala shares seat frames with
the new Cadillac XTS and its cushions are built in layers
like they are in expensive luxury cars.
• 4-way adjustable front head restraints. Head restraints
that adjust fore and aft and side by side are standard on
LS and LTZ models. This added driving comfort is not

Ford designers upgraded the Taurus interior as well to
provide a more premium environment. Car and Driver,
however, feels they missed the mark, writing: “The cheesy,
fake gathered-leather insert on the door panel had us
gritting our teeth.” They also said that, while the MyFord
Touch interface is improved, “the touch screen is still pretty
difficult to operate while under way”.
• Foldable rear head restraints. Head restraints that fold
down for greater rear visibility are available on LS and
standard on all other Impala models. They’re not available
on Taurus.
Impala Personal Technologies Wins
vs. Ford Taurus
• New enhanced MyLink. All 2014 Impala models include
six months of complimentary OnStar services including
turn-by-turn navigation. LT and LTZ models then add
the full Impala MyLink system with all of its expanded
customization, control and connectivity. That’s not the
case with Taurus telematics. On SE, Sync Services, which
provide some of the benefits of OnStar, are extra-cost.
Sync with MyFord, which includes only a 4.2" screen and
limited. connectivity, is standard on SEL and Limited.
Ford’s top telematics system, Sync with MyFord Touch, is
only available as an option on Taurus Limited. And even
then, it does not come close to matching the capabilities
of the new enhanced MyLink system in Impala.
The 2013 Taurus continues to be available in SE, SEL and

well: 18.8 cu.ft. for Impala; only 16.3 for Azera.
• More comfortable seats. Impala shares seat frames with
the new Cadillac XTS and its cushions are built in layers
like they are in expensive luxury cars. Azera doesn’t talk
about its seat construction.
The Azera was all-new as a 2012 model and is essentially
unchanged as a 2013 model. It slots between the mid-size
Sonata and Hyundai’s luxury Genesis sedan. Or as
Edmunds put it: “(Azera) is really just a bigger, slightly
more luxurious Sonata.”
• Heated steering wheel. You can enjoy that luxury on
Impala, not on Azera.
• 4-way adjustable front head restraints. Head restraints

Azera is available in two trim levels: Azera and Azera with

with Driver Shift Control. Azera’s strong appeal is its
dramatic styling coupled with a high level of luxury features
at a relatively low price. Leather seating surfaces, dualzone automatic climate control and keyless access with
pushbutton start are all standard on the base Azera. Its
weakness is its lackluster driving experience. Edmunds
said Azera’s handling “feels rather soft, like a traditional
American sedan for traditional Americans”, and added
“there’s not much in the way of steering feel either.”

The current two trim levels (Base and Limited) are replaced
by three new trim level models. The base XLE is available

The automotive enthusiast site, LeftLane News, believes
that Maxima “doesn’t live up to its ‘4-door sports sedan’
billing’.” However Edmunds gives it the benefit of the doubt

handling and a plush ride”. Nissan’s 3.5L V6 and 4-mode
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) remain the only
powertrain choice. The current-generation Maxima is also
showing its age: The interior is cramped, trunk space is

• More air bags. Ten for Impala, six for Maxima.
• More advanced safety features. Adaptive Cruise Control,
Collision Mitigation Braking, Forward Collision Alert,
Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear
Cross Traffic Alert are all standard or available on LT and
LTZ models. None of these new safety features are offered
on Maxima.
• Direct injection. One sign of a state-of-the-art engine,
direct injection boosts power and fuel economy and
reduces emissions. Impala’s engine has it; Maxima’s
engine still has older-style multi-port fuel injection.
• 6-speed automatic transmission. Maxima’s CVT has
no shift points­­—one reason why many consumers and
enthusiast publications dislike Continuously Variable
Transmissions. In fact, in order to provide a more sporty
and satisfying driving experience, Maxima engineers
actually built phony shift points into the transmission
to simulate gear changes. Impala gives customers the
genuine article­—a full 6-speed automatic transmission.
• Automatic Crash Response. This potentially life-saving
service is standard on all Impala models as part of their
complimentary six months of OnStar. Maxima offers no
such service.
• Roadside assistance. Impala provides it for five years or
100,000 miles. Maxima provides no assistance.
• Courtesy transportation. Impala provides this
convenience for five years or 100,000 miles as well.
Maxima does not.

• Premium driving experience. Impala’s suspension and
steering are tuned to provide an exhilarating driving
experience. Car and Driver notes that the latest Maxima
“lacks the refined feel and precise handling of some of
its competition.” Customer will find that competition
