There are a number of different types of student visas. The following is a list of visa subclasses and the assessment
level of each subclass based on your nationality.
This checklist applies to student visa applications lodged in Vietnam and Laos.

Course packaging
If you intend on packaging courses, you will be assessed under the visa subclass applicable to your main course of
study.
Family members and student guardians are also subject to the same Assessment Level as the student and the
guardian’s nationality.
Important: All Student visa applicants
a. Email address: please write your email address on the visa application form (157A) as this will enable us to
communicate with you much faster.
b. Ensure you lodge your visa application at least eight (8) weeks prior to your course commencement date. You
should ensure that the application form is fully completed and all relevant supporting documentation is
provided. While in exceptional cases, an applicant may be requested to provide more information by their case
officer, in most cases a decision on a visa application is made solely on the information provided at time of
application.
c.
All non-English documents submitted with your application must be accompanied by a certified English
translation - unless otherwise indicated in the visa application checklist.
d. Certified copies need to be authorised or stamped as being true copies of the original document by the local
authority in Laos or Vietnam. In Australia, documents may be certified by a person before whom a statutory
declaration may be made under the Statutory Declarations Act, 1959. We will not accept photocopies of

e. Certified copies must be in A4 format.

Step 2: Complete your health examination before you lodge your visa application
AUSTRALIAN HEALTH REQUIREMENT
You will need to meet Australia’s health requirement in order to be granted a student visa. Please complete your health
examination before you lodge this visa application.
To do this, you will need to create an ImmiAccount and generate your own Health Assessment Portal (HAP) ID and
medical request letter. You will then need to take this letter to a panel medical clinic to complete your health
assessment.

Information about your identity
One passport size photograph (this photograph must not be more than six months old).
Certified copy of your Birth Certificate.
Certified copy of your passport bio-data page and each page that has a visa label and entry/exit
stamps for Australia or another country.
Important: Each page of your passport must be copied onto A4 size paper. Bring your original
passport with you, so we can verify against all certified pages. Vietnamese and Laotian national
passports will be returned to the applicant after we have processed your visa lodgement.
Certified copy of your National Identity Card (this document does not need to be translated to
English).
Certified copy of all pages of the Household Registration Book (this document does not need to
be translated to English)
Vietnamese applicants only: Original Curriculum Vitae certified by the local Authorities.
For family members included in the student’s visa application
Certified copy(s) of Birth Certificate(s) for family members.
Evidence of their relationship to the student visa applicant (Such as certified copy of Birth
Certificate(s) and/or Marriage Certificate).
Original Curriculum Vitae (CV).
If the family member is your child and their other parent is not travelling to Australia with you,
consent from the other parent:

Duly completed and signed Form 1229 signed by any non-accompanying parent(s); and
A certified copy of the National Identity Card of both parents.
Please note that Form 1229 and National Identity Card must be certified by the local authorities.
If dependent child is of school age, evidence of enrolment in an Australian school, including
payment of the required fee.
For family members lodging separate applications
Apart from the above information required for family members, the following form is required
for family members who lodge their applications separately.

A Study Plan
A statement to satisfy your case officer that you have a genuine intention to stay in Australia
temporarily:

Your circumstances in Vietnam or Laos;
Your potential circumstances in Australia;
The value of the course to your future; and
If you have previously travelled to Australia, the reasons for that travel and the duration of
your stay

Academic Enrolment
Valid electronic Certificate of Enrolment (CoE) for the principal course being undertaken at an
eligible university and for any preparatory courses being undertaken.
•
CoE(s) must be addressed to DIBP – Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City).
•
CoEs dates should not overlap and the study gap should be no more than 2 or 3
months over the Australian end of year break.
Evidence (original and one certified copy) of any courses you have previously attempted
and/or completed
Evidence (original and one certified copy) of any educational qualifications achieved
Evidence of any scholarship(s) awarded for the study you will be commencing in Australia
Overseas Student Health Cover
Evidence of valid Overseas Student Health Cover for student and any family members included
in the application for the proposed duration of the student visa.

Evidence of Overseas Student Health Cover must be provided at time of visa lodgement.
Certified copy of any evidence of employment history.
Additional Information: Student visa applicants aged under 18 years of age
If the visa applicant is under 18 years of age, and intends on travelling without one or both
their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) please provide the following:
Parental Consent

Duly completed and signed Form 1229 signed by any non-accompanying parent(s) or legal
guardian(s); and

A certified copy of the National Identity Card of both parents (or legal guardians).
Please note that Form 1229 and National Identity Card must be certified by the local authorities.
If you will be looked after by your education provider
If welfare arrangements are arranged by the education provider(s), Confirmation of Appropriate
Accommodation and Welfare Arrangements (CAAW) letter(s) must be submitted.
Note: Students undertaking a package of courses with different providers must submit
separate CAAW letters from each provider, and must ensure that there are continuous welfare
arrangements in place between courses.
If you intend on living with any relative in Australia, including your parents, they must provide:

evidence of the relationship between the applicant and their relative;

evidence that the relative is at least 21 years of age;
-
evidence that the relative has the right to remain in Australia for the period of the
applicant’s stay, or until the applicant turns 18 years, whichever is the lesser period;
-
original police certificate from each country where the relative (since turning 16 years of
age) has resided for a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years. If they need one
from Australia, the relative must obtain an Australian National Police Check (NPC) from the
Australian Federal Police (AFP). Only a “Complete Disclosure” NPC is acceptable. When
completing the Australian NPC application form, Code 33 must be used at Question 1.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REQUIRED: ASSESSMENT LEVEL 2 & 3 STUDENT VISA APPLICANTS
Student Visa Living Costs and Evidence of Funds
International students are required to demonstrate and/or declare that they have genuine access to sufficient funds for
you and your dependent family members to be granted a Student visa. Applicants are required to demonstrate
sufficient funds to cover these expenses for the first 12 months in Australia. This helps to ensure students are better
able to make the most of their studies and have a safe and enjoyable experience in Australia.
For Assessment Level 3, the funds must be provided by eligible family members and the evidence of their relationship
to the student visa applicant must be provided. The eligible family members include:

Decision makers will consider a range of factors in determining whether funds demonstrated or declared will be
genuinely available to contribute to the cost of studying and living in Australia. These factors may include:

the applicant's previous financial and immigration history
the employment history of the applicant or the person providing them with financial support
the source of the income used (such as cash assets or a bank loan).
Where there is doubt about an applicant's ability to access their claimed funds in Australia, the applicant may be
requested to provide further information.
Example: Applicants relying on a bank loan may need to show that these funds have been deposited into a bank
account to which they have unrestricted access, and that they have the financial capacity to service the loan both
before they depart for Australia and once they arrive.

Evidence of any prepaid formal boarding or homestay fees arranged through the education
provider (such as a contract or an authorised receipt of payment from the education provider).
Original signed financial undertaking from the individual(s) providing the funds outlining the
relationship between the applicant and the funds provider.
Evidence of identity of financial sponsor(s):
• if from Vietnam, a copy of identity card.
If from Australia, a copy of passport or driving licence.
Evidence of available funds, from the individual(s) providing the funds, in the form of original
bankbook, bank deposit, home loan or credit line agreement together with relevant supporting
documents.

If funds are through money deposit held in Vietnam, evidence of income stream (such as
employment contract, employment certificate, social insurance booklet, bank account
statements showing salary transfers, business licence, personal/business income tax
receipts, etc) must be submitted. For AL 3, the funds must be held at least 3 consecutive
months prior to the date of lodgement.
Important: Hand-written business records or invoices are not accepted.
•
If funds are from Australia, a certified copy of full bank statement which details full name of
account holder (not more than 3 months old) is to be submitted and for AL 3, it must be
held at least 3 consecutive months prior to the date of lodgement. Evidence of income
stream (such as at least three previous years’ Notice of Assessment by the Australian
Taxation Office) must be submitted.

A copy of an English language test certificate that was taken less than 2 years before date of
lodgement of application. The test can be taken under the International English Language
Testing System (IELTS), the internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) or the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE).
