Welcome, Program Overview & Audience Response System Training
Lee E. Morrow, M.D., M.Sc.
Purpose — After participating in this day-long
conference, attendees will increase their didactic
knowledge regarding select pulmonary and critical care
topics. Clinical vignettes and the audience response
system will be used to assess learners’ mastery of the
educational content provided.
Objectives — The participant should be able to:
• Provide case studies of clinical decision making
errors and delineate strategies to reduce the
likelihood of making such cognitive errors in
practice
• Review novel pulmonary and critical care therapies
which were approved by the FDA in the past 12
months and understand the role(s) of these agents
in clinical practice
• Explore the recent changes to the Center
for Disease Control recommendations on
Pneumococcal, Influenza and Pertussis vaccination
schedule
• Integrate pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics
and patient-specific physiology into the clinical
management of patients taking novel anticoagulant
therapies
• Compare and contrast conflicting beliefs on brain
death through a review of the Jahi McMath case
• Incorporate the perspectives of the organ donor
family when considering organ donation candidacy
and/or managing the organ donor in the ICU
• Synthesize a prioritized plan for the evaluation and
management of the organ donor, taking into
account their unusual physiologic derangements
and the unique goals of care in these instances
• Delineate the benefits of timely liberation from
mechanical ventilation and review how clinicians
can identify the ‘optimal’ time to extubate
• Introduce the ethical controversies and
unique challenges to routine ICU care that were
encountered by the UNMC Biocontainment Unit
team while treating patients with Ebola
• Assess the beneficial and potentially harmful
aspects of palliative airway management in patients
with advanced malignant disease
• Summarize the results of the most clinically
important articles from the pulmonary and critical
care literature in the past year
• Demonstrate how attitudes towards blood product
transfusion have evolved over time and how
clinicians are better able to gauge which products
should be used in various clinical situations
