Phlebotomy Training Program Goal: To provide students with a working knowledge of blood collection procedures, techniques, equipment, specimen requirements and point of care testing. The course includes a three week clinical rotation for the practice of phlebotomy. Unit 1 (May 26 - June 12, 2015) consists of basic anatomy and physiology, medical terms and abbreviations, a comprehensive background in theory and principles of blood collection, including thirty hours of laboratory practice for blood collection procedures. Unit 2 BLS ( Basic Life Support or CPR for Health Care) Must be certified within the last year or become certified to complete the course, placement in a clinical and receive your certificate of completion in phlebotomy. Unit 3 (June-July) involves placement in a clinical setting for 100-120 hours of phlebotomy practice for those students who successfully completed Units 1 and 2. The Phlebotomy Program consists of 60 hours Phlebotomy Lecture, 30 hours Laboratory Practice, and 100—120 hours of Clinical Rotation. Books, lab coats, BLS and malpractice insurance are purchased by the student. at an additional cost. Following the successful completion of Units 1 -3 students will be eligible to take a national certification examination for phlebotomy (ASPT/ASCP). Accreditation: American Society for Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) Program Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED equivalent Eighteen years of age or older Minimum GPA of 80 on a scale of 100; 2.5 on a scale of 4.0. All students are required to have an updated physical examination that complies with the standards set forth by the School of Health Technology & Management. (Financial aid is unavailable through the University.) COMPLETED physical examination must be on record before start of class (May 22, 2015).
