Callan Paffrath & Michael Wurdeman
My name Is Callan Paffrath. I am 24 years
old and am co-owner of Paffrath Jewelers in
Owatonna. I was a dancer for about 13 years
and I was also a figure skater for about 13
years. So doing dancing with the stars was a lot
of fun for me. My parents are Ted and Marcia
Paffrath and I have been a part of the Owatonna
community all of my life. So getting to dance in
front of them tonight is really exciting for me!
Hi, I am Michael Wurdeman, son of Dan and
Carol Wurdeman of Owatonna. I am a 2008 OHS graduate and I received my
Bachelor of Science Degree from Winona State University in December 2011. I
work for South Central Human Relations Center as a mental health practitioner and
will be receiving my Masters Degree in Counselor Education in May. I enjoy riding
my motorcycle, playing volleyball, fishing in Canada, hanging out with friends and
cheering on the WILD.....and oh yes, dancing with Callan Paffrath.
Jeanne & Dean Rhoades
Dean and Jeanne live in Owatonna with their 2
children Jenna (16), Mason (14), their bulldog
Bailey and cat Jimmy. They arrived in Owatonna
about 10 years ago by way of Phoenix, Arizona.
As can be expected, they are still trying to get
acclimated but truly love the people and the
community. A transfer with Federated for Dean
brought them to Owatonna. He has been
employed with Federated for 28 years. Jeanne
has been working as the service coordinator for
Healthy Seniors for over seven years and is grateful
to be associated with such a great organization. They are active at Trinity Church,
like to golf and like to travel. Now add to the list like to dance!
The DWS experience has been a fun one. They never thought they could learn to
dance but have enjoyed the adventure. Dance, anyone? A big thank you to all the
people that have supported their DWS experience!
Amy & Rod Baker
Rod and Amy Baker are a young, older couple.
They will be celebrating thirteen years of marriage
in June (that’s the young part) and Rod’s 50th
birthday in July (that’s the older part). Rod and
Amy met when Amy was chair of the Music In
Owatonna, Blues Festival. She was in need of a
“blues music” consultant, and was told that Rod
Baker would be her man. Their friends at Trinity
Lutheran Church had a little something to do with
their getting together as well. Rod has been an
IT guy at Federated Insurance for 27 years. Rod
continues to involve himself in volunteer activities
that include music, carpentry and electrical work
(and sometimes beer)…BrewFest, Steele County History Center events, CulturFest and
assisting with audio and video needs at Trinity. Recently, Amy joined the staff at Trinity
as Communications Coordinator. Amy’s alma mater is the University of Wisconsin –
Eau Claire and she grew up in Blooming Prairie. Rod’s roots are in Iowa and he is
a graduate of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD. Rod and Amy have four children,
Payton, Landyn, Nolan and Erin, ages 20, 17, 11 & 7 respectively. The range
of elementary school to college activities keeps Rod and Amy on their “dancing”
toes. This has been their only dancing experience prior to Dancing with Our Stars of
Steele County. They are excited to be part this event that has been so successful in
raising funds for Healthy Seniors. They are looking forward to showing off their much
improved dance skills.
Beth & Brent Svenby
Brent and Beth are Owatonna natives who have
been married for 11 years. They spend the majority
of their time with their four children; Spencer (20
and at the University of Minnesota), Maria (17
and headed to the University of Minnesota in the
fall), Lane (12) and Ty (10). Beth is the Principal at
Washington Elementary School while Brent works
as a Senior Administrative Analyst for the City of
Rochester. Both keep very active outside of family
and work through volunteering their time giving
back to the community. While Beth directs the
From The Heart Half Marathon/5K race offering financial support to families on a
journey with cancer, Brent spends his time serving on the Owatonna City Council
currently serving his third term and as a director on the Steele County Free Fair
Board. With any remaining time, Beth enjoys training and running several road
races and is currently training for her second full marathon in May, while Brent
is out snowmobiling, biking, camping and boating with family and friends. Both
Brent and Beth have enjoyed learning to dance together while raising money for a
wonderful organization that helps our Steele County senior citizens.
Jessica & Clint Williams
Jessica and Clint have been happily coexisting
for over 12 years now and will be celebrating
their 6th wedding anniversary this June. This
couple is representing our Ellendale area in this
year’s show. Both of them grew up in the area
and both are graduates of NRHEG School.
Jessica graduated from Bemidji State University,
where she majored in Elementary Education, in
January of this year. She is currently teaching at
the NRHEG Elementary School in Ellendale. Clint
is a Product Manager at Itron in Waseca, where
he has been employed for over 12 years. The happy couple lives in Geneva with
their three children: Mia – 13, Gracie – 8, and Lex – 3.
Angela & Cory Michaelson
Cory and Angela were married in Owatonna in
1997 and are the proud parents of two children.
Katla (15) is a freshman at OHS and swims for the
OHS Swim Team. She enjoys showing dog and
horse and is an amazing young artist. Leif (11)
is in 5th grade and enjoys his position as goalie
for his hockey team. If you are a veteran, please
introduce yourself to Leif as he is a fanatic for the
history of American military especially WWII.
Angela, originally from Blooming Prairie, was
self-employed for several years before deciding
to take some time off to raise Katla and Leif. She
loves being able to show horse with her daughter.
As many of you know, nothing comes between
Angela and her horses. Cory grew up in Owatonna and watched his dad help
the community through his work. He knew early on that he wanted to have a
similar impact on people in his career. Cory graduated with Mortuary Science
and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Minnesota.
He worked with his parents at Michaelson Funeral Home for ten years before
purchasing the business from them in 2006. The family enjoys time together at
Beaver Lake and are avid water sports enthusiasts.
Amber & James Konz
Amber, a native to Steele County, graduated from
Blooming Prairie. She and James were married in
2006. Both grew up on farms, each located about
5 miles from small towns and said they’d never go
back. However, after trying the city life Amber’s
dad and brother asked James to come work with
them at JD Green and BP Pumping. James and
Amber decided to come “home” and truly feel
they have found where home is. They enjoy being
involved with the Catholic Church in Blooming
Prairie: Amber teaching religious education, James
with music and Youth Choir. Amber is an Education Assistant at St. Mary’s School
in Owatonna. When not working they love playing with their children, watching
movies, being outside, summer vacations, game nights, and jam sessions with the
Lights of Litomysl. Even though they have little prior dance experience they eagerly
“waltzed” into this challenge with great enthusiasm. They hope the hard work and
many hours of practicing they put in help make for an unforgettable night!
Glenda & Paul Smith
Paul and Glenda have thoroughly enjoyed dancing
these past 10 weeks! Beyond stepping on each
other once in a while, they have enjoyed learning
something new together. Paul and Glenda met
20 years ago, while attending Waldorf College
(Paul was Glenda’s first interview for the college
newspaper). They also spent many hours traveling
together in college while singing in Waldorf’s choir.
Upon moving to Owatonna, they dove into many
opportunities our community offers, including joining
Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on several non-profit
and youth sports boards, coaching youth sports, and helping with local political
campaigns. Recently, they enjoy watching their two children find new interests
and hobbies. Abby (12), is a 6th grader at Willow Creek, and Owen (9) is a 3rd
grader at Washington, both currently playing soccer. As Iowa natives, they have
called Owatonna home for over 15 years. Federated Insurance brought Paul to
Owatonna 18 years ago, and Glenda joined him two years later after graduating
from Iowa State, when they were married in August of 1999. In 2000 Glenda
joined the team at Tri M Graphics, which is how she was originally introduced
to Healthy Seniors. With the convincing of some friends (thanks Amy!), here we
are….dancing the Argentine Tango. Hope you enjoy the show!
The Dances
Argentine Tango – A dance in 2/4 time, which originated in Argentina
and is characterized by catlike walking action and staccato head
movements.
Bachata - is a style of social dance from the Dominican Republic which
is now danced all over the world.
Cha Cha - gets its name and character from its distinct repetitive foot
rhythm. This famous Latin dance with its sexy hip movements is often
danced to upbeat top 40 music.
Foxtrot - is characterized by smooth, walking-style movements, but
can be adapted to fit a variety of musical tempo and style, or to fit onto
small, crowded nightclub dance floors.
Lindy Hop - A lively energetic social partner dance which is primarily
derived from Lindy Swing. Characterized by circular patterns and a six
count basic utilizing a rock step. Made popular in the 50’s and 60’s to
Rock & Roll
Quickstep - The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing
and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is
danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events.
Rumba – A slow sensuous dance originating in Cuba. A slow
to medium tempo Latin American dance in 4/4 time, which is
characterized by sensual, provocative movements and gestures.
Waltz - Characterized by rise and fall which gives a smooth, graceful
movement around the dance floor. Waltz music has a very distinctive
one-two-three tempo.
Judges
Steve Caron - Steve and his wife, JoAnn started their Country
Western dance career over 20 years ago with community ed
classes. From there they went on to help form a local dance group
in their area. After lots of encouragement, they started competing
on the Country Western dance circuit primarily in the upper
Midwest area. During their competition years they won 7 Grand
Champion titles and 1 Overall Finals Championship. They retired
from competition to raise their family but continue to take lesson
and workshops to broaden their knowledge of dance. They can
be found most weekends with a group of friends out dancing.
JoAnn will be dancing in the opening number.
Jennifer Libby - Jennifer Libby is President of the Owatonna
Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and has been in the
community for 16 years. Prior to the Chamber, Jennifer was
employed at United Health Group, CYBEX Intl, Inc. and Phillips
Plastics. She resides in Owatonna with her family and is the proud
mother of four children, who make every day amazing. She enjoys
running, yoga, reading and travel.
Matt & Annie Jessop - Matt and Annie Jessop have been married
for 12 years and have two sons. Annie is employed at Gopher Sport
as a Customer Care Advocate and Matt works at Owatonna Shoe
in beautiful downtown Owatonna. They competed last year in
Dancing With Our Steele County Stars and feel passionate about
supporting the Healthy Seniors organization.

Choreographers and Coaches for
Tonight’s Performance
Brian & Lynette Dawley
Drawing from twenty years of dance
experience and numerous hours of
private coaching from top ballroom
instructors from the US and abroad,
Brian and Lynette have provided the
choreography for the dances you will
see tonight. They selected the music
and, with the couples in mind, put together routines that highlight the lyrics and fit each couple’s abilities.
They worked with each couple on an individual basis one hour a week
for the past ten weeks preparing them for tonight’s performance. Brian
and Lynette offer a variety of ballroom classes through Owatonna
Community Education as well as group and private lessons.
They have been guest instructors at various dance events throughout
the US and also work with wedding couples to prepare them for their
first dance. They currently teach dance at MSU in Mankato. Lynette is
also a current American Smooth competitor.
