HEATHRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL An Independent Public School 28 April 2015 Newsletter Dear Parents/Carers, I hope you all enjoyed the ANZAC holiday weekend. The students have worked hard in their first week back at school so I expect there were a few sleep-ins over the weekend. This term we happily welcomed the team from Playful Learners who are working with some of our students before and after school providing very high quality activities and care in Room 4. They also have a three year old program so if you have work commitments or need occasional childcare I recommend you contact Angela ([email protected]) to discuss your children’s needs. A school holiday program will also be available for working parents’ convenience. We will also start the new lunch ordering system this term. Please contact your child’s teacher if you do not have internet access at home and want to set up an online ordering account so you can order easily (ouronlinecanteen.com.au). Primary Music Institute continues the very successful keyboard lessons each Friday with a growing number of keen musicians. Our new Music/Drama specialist Mrs Ludovico has commented already on the high calibre of performance and music skills she has observed in the students. Last week we had a beautiful ANZAC Ceremony organised by Mrs Sublet’s year 5 and 6 students. We really appreciated our local hero, ex-serviceman Mr Brad Kay reading the Ode and poem “In Flanders Field”. The flowers sent by families were a fitting tribute to the men and women who have served our country. Thank you for your attendance and contributions. There are some very good artworks on display in the office demonstrating the students understanding of the History of World Wars and its effects. In addition Room 1 students have recounted and drawn their holiday experiences for the Office display and your viewing pleasure. Finally, you will have noticed, or been told by your child/ren that we have Pre-Teachers in each classroom. These talented students are in the final year of their degree. As usual we are setting goals for the Term 2 IEPs. Teachers will organise meeting for those families with children on IEPs for Week 4 so please book that in when convenient. I am sure you are noting the gains from the refined and ongoing tasks to improve skills targeted. I recently attended a two day professional learning opportunity for students with difficulties with learning – both diagnosed and undiagnosed. It is refreshing to know that we are providing an exemplary opportunity for all learners and we will continue to enhance this approach. Please make an appointment to come and see me if you have concerns with your child’s learning. CASE CONFERENCES I will schedule case conferences for our Schools Plus funded students with our School Psychologist Neil Sinclair for Weeks 4, 6, 8 and 10. These will be on a Thursday morning. I will forward meeting times via your child’s class teacher as required. Please confirm your availability to attend. HEALTH and WELL BEING With NAPLAN testing coming up please encourage your child to develop a good preparation for the next few weeks. Tips include: an early bedtime for good and refreshing sleep, hydrating with water and eating well balanced meals. This may help to fight off colds and flus which will begin to pop up. Having fun and family time is also relaxing for those children who may get a little anxious. Class teachers have been preparing the students very well so remind them to just give each question a go. Amanda Pickersgill Associate Principal Dear Parents/Carers, MATH-A-THON There is only one week left until our Math-a-thon. It would be great if families could take 10 to 15 minutes each night to practice some problems on time, money and number. A note was sent home with the sponsor sheets last term outlining what type of questions the children will be asked. It has been great to hear that so many children have made a huge effort to collect sponsors so far. Each class will complete their math-a-thon question next Tuesday morning during class time. Results will be sent home on Tuesday afternoon. Please remember, all money raised will go towards the bus for the whole school excursion at the end of the year. If you would like another sponsor sheet or would like more information please do not hesitate to see either Mrs Zis (room 9) or myself in the office. RUNNING CLUB This morning we had our first running club. For the first few weeks of the running club we will be concentrating on building our own fitness. In the coming weeks children will start timing and recording their own time. The aim is for them to improve their own personal bests. The aim of this activity was teach the children how to measure. It was important for the children to have a starting point and place the paws next to each other. They then needed to count the paws to solve the problem, "How many Easter bunny paws are you?" Welcome to Term 2! We have been very busy in Room 3 already. We would like to welcome Miss Marshall to our class. She will be comple ng her 4th year teaching prac cum with us this term. She will be running each lesson with the support of Miss Wynne, Mrs Parker and Mrs Strong. We are very excited to have her on board! We are s ll working hard on our spelling every morning. We are also learning about narra ves. We have been reading Possum Magic and learning about characters and se ngs in Australia. In reading groups, we have been prac cing how to read smoothly to the full stop, and making connec ons between real life and the story. This term, we are learning about analogue clocks. We have been looking at me by the hour and the half hour. We have been playing games to prac ce telling the me. In science, we are beginning to learn about natural and man made materials. We will be caring for a mini‐garden to see how we can look a er nature and what happens to nature as me passes. We have also been having animated discussions about what we know about the sky and stars. In history lessons, we are beginning to inves gate family structures and will be comparing and contras ng how everyday things have changed over me. Year 2 students will also be inves ga ng local history in and around Heathridge. P&C NEWS MOTHER’S DAY STALL Don’t forget our Mother’s Day Stall which will be held on Thursday, 7 May. Gifts will range from $2.00-$8.00. SAFETY HOUSE Safety Houses provide a child or children that may need help, with a safe house they can go to if in a situation they feel in danger (BULLYING, STRANGER DANGER etc). When this happens, the house owner is asked to keep the child calm and call the police or parent depending on the situation. STUDENT BANKING Student Banking is every THURSDAY in the Library. Every deposit, no matter how big or small, earns commission for the P&C. Don’t forget the drop and go basket. Place your completed deposit book in the basket, it will be processed and returned to your child’s classroom later that day. RECYCLE Recycle your unwanted newspapers (must be unwrapped from plastic), batteries, corks, ring pulls (separated from cans) and printer cartridges in the undercover area every THURSDAY. Children earn raffle tickets and go into the draw to win a pick from the treasure box. Please note that we DO NOT recycle plastic bags or aluminium cans.
