Heidelberg UCC

VOLUME XLIV– NUMBER 7
July 2015
Annual outdoor worship and picnic
June 28, 11 AM, Sam Lewis State Park
T
his Sunday, June 28, weather
permitting, the congregation of
Heidelberg UCC will gather for
worship at 11 at Sam Lewis State
Park overlooking the Susquehanna in
Wrightsville.
Heidelberg UCC
47 WEST PHILADELPHIA STREET,
YORK, PA 17401
We gather in the Hill Top Pavillion...the first one you’ll run into,
right next to the parking lot.
We encourage you to bring lawn
chairs, kites, any other athletic equipment, and to plan to stay the afternoon. After worship, we’ll have a
picnic lunch. The church will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and
drinks. We ask you to bring other
picnic foods to share.
Sam Lewis is off the Cool Creek exit
on 30 and is an easy drive. http://

I
f it’s rainy, or looking iffy, check
our Facebook page, your email or
call the church answering machine for updated information. If the
weather is bad, we’ll still worship
informally and picnic, but in the
church Auditorium.
This is always one of the fun Sundays, and a great time to invite a
friend to come along and get to
know us.
Please make a note that
because of our picnic on June 28th
and the July 4th weekend,
WE WILL NOT be having
a Welcome Table meal
on July 5.
Worship in July
Worship time is 10 AM in July and August
W
e welcome special guests to Heidelberg on July 12. Members and friends
of the Total Pra’Ze Mime Ministry
at Shiloh Baptist Church, York, will offer two
musical ministry numbers during our 10 AM worship. We’re delighted to host these young people
and to be able to experience their musical/ dramatic art form. A free will offering will be received in support of their ministry.
July 19:
Just who was Mary
Magdalene and why
should we care? (and
what’s with the egg?)
On the week which includes the feast day of
Mary Magdalene we explore this disciple’s legend and legacy.
Ice Cream Social to follow worship.
Also this month... On July 5:
Worship will also include the Sacrament of Holy
Communion and the Communion Quilt, so bring a
swatch to represent you, if you haven’t before.

Congregational Meeting Called for July 19
T
he Consistory of Heidelberg UCC has issued a call for a special congregational meeting to be held immediately after worship on Sunday, July 19 to act on two items of business.
Organ Maintenance
The first item to be acted upon is the recommendation of the Consistory
to do some necessary maintenance to the Sanctuary Organ. The work is
to be completed by the Taylor Miller Organ Company and include replacing the ties and support racking which hold the organ pipes in place.
This maintenance was recommended some years ago, but we were not
able to do it at the time. The old ties are rotten with age and should they
tear, the pipes could fall causing more extensive damage.
The proposed maintenance is in the amount of $6500. Consistory proposes using the $3500 that was raised at the Valentine’s Day dance toward this repair and to take the remaining needed monies from the Memorial Fund, and then to continue fundraising efforts and replenish whatever funds we can.
Altar Rail Modification
The second item requiring action is the altar rail. Consistory has already made arrangements to replace the carpeting in the chancel area of the church because it is threadbare. When this is being doing, Consistory is also
recommending a modification to the altar rail in the sanctuary to make the chancel accessible from ground level and to allow us to incorporate that space back into our weekly worship services. The congregation will be
asked to choose between three options.
Option 1: Make no change at all to the altar rail, simply re-carpet.
Option 2. Remove the altar rail entirely, then re-carpet, leaving an open chancel.
Option 3. Remove a center section of the rail in front of the
altar. Install matching posts to mark the center ends of the
rail, leaving a passageway at the center front and making
the chancel accessible, then re-carpet.
The proposed carpentry work for both options 2 and 3 will
be done by members of the congregation and the only expense would be minimal, for supplies and materials.
Mocked up pictures of the proposals will be available at the
church in July so that you can see the various possibilities.
We encourage your careful reflection and invite you to be
present on the 19th to make your opinions known on these
two items of business.

2nd Equality Fest set for August 2
Y
ork’s Equality Fest is scheduled this year
for Sunday, August 2 beginning at noon,
in Royal Square, York and Heidelberg
will be among the faith communities participating.
Equality Fest is a day long, family friendly community, arts & cultural celebration held in Downtown York City to celebrate the passage of marriage equality and to encourage full inclusion of
all York and Pennsylvania citizens in all aspects
of civic life. Inspired by
the May 20, 2014 decision of the U.S. Federal
District Court allowing
marriages for those within the LGBT community,
the Equality Fest Board
joins forces annually with
several like minded organizations, faith communities, retailers, artists,
politicians and committed
citizens to produce a full
day which fosters connections, awareness and
activism within the beautifully diverse citizenship
of southcentral PA.
This event is free and open to the public. The festival features two stages with speakers, music,
dance, theater, poetry, spoken word and performance art as well as live visual art, strolling performers, a fully interactive children’s area with
games and activities, retail vendors, informational
and organizational displays and a variety of food
trucks. The day also includes a group wedding
which is open to all couples, regardless of sexual
orientation and a vow renewal for those wishing to
affirm or reaffirm their vows in the Equality Fest
setting.
The event actively celebrates the full inclusion of
all wonderfully diverse citizens in all aspects of
Page 4
civic life - regardless of race, age, gender, gender
expression, mental or physical ability, social status, economic status or sexual orientation.
H
eidelberg will be participating in two
ways. First, once again this year Elise
and Megan Nichols will organize a table
in the children’s area with activities for kids. If
you’d like to take a
turn helping at this
venue, please sign up
for an hour long slot.
Our second presence
will be a Heidelberg
literature table where
our members will greet
the public and hand out
materials and
“Heidelberg Swag” as
we introduce ourselves
to the community.
Again, we’d be glad for
a good crew to take
turns at the table all
day. So sign up as
soon as possible.
We’re also looking for
folks who could help set up our table immediately after worship that day. If you can help,
please speak with Mike Feight.
Last year we had about 50 Heidelbergers wearing
our t-shirts and
floating through
the event. You
HeidelPRIDE
are our best advertising. Plan to
spend the day
with the community.
Heidelberg United Church of Christ
Please see the
article on page 5
about a new Heidelberg T-shirt especially for
this event. You’ll want to order one today!

W
ould you like a new shirt for your Heidelberg wardrobe?
We’re ordering some new t-shirts in time for Equality
Fest that will enable you to show off your
HeidelPRIDE. For $10 you can purchase a royal blue
(we’re keeping our branded color) shirt that features
the bold logo HeidelPRIDE, with the “Heidel” in
white and the “PRIDE” in rainbow colors. Underneath it will read “Heidelberg United Church of
Christ”

We’re ordering universal shirts (neither men’s nor
women’s sizing) this time. Remember these shirts
run very small when you order. Sign up in the Auditorium as soon as possible to order yours.
HeidelHealth schedules July events
Y
ou are invited to participate in HeidelHealth’s July activities.
Please note the change from Mondays to Tuesdays!
Tuesday, July 7th @ 7pm - Cousler Park walk/picnic/movie
"Back to the Future"
Thursday, July 16th @ 6pm - John Rudy County Park walk/bike
Tuesday, July 21st @ 7pm - Cousler Park walk/picnic/movie "Big
Hero 6"
Wednesday, July 29th @ 6pm - Rocky Ridge hike/walk
The two dates for Cousler Park are their "movie in the park" days. We’re hoping that attendees for the walk
those day will bring a healthy picnic for a snack/dinner to enjoy after our walk and during the movie.

You are invited to YELP
A
re you familiar with YELP? YELP is a
social media tool which publishes crowdsourced reviews about local businesses and
organizations. Most folks check YELP for restaurant reviews.
Turns out some folks also
turn to YELP when they’re
looking for a church, and a
good review there is one of
the newest and best ways
to spread the word about a
faith community.
It takes a while to get established on YELP and
we’re lucky to already have a profile—but we
need reviews. We encourage you to go to YELP,
click on “Write a review” and follow the prompts
that will invite you to create an account, and then
to begin to write what you’d like. Be sure to
mention the kinds of things that brought you to
Heidelberg and kept you there. And don’t use
“churchy” language. Write as if the reader had
never been in a church before.
We’re updating the church’s profile as well, adding pictures and links to
our website, etc. But personal reviews about your
experience at the church
will go a long way in telling our story.
With fewer and fewer folks
following traditional advertising sources, like newspapers, social media has become the go-to way of
letting the world know who we are, and we’re
counting on you to help.
Will you write a review today? Thanks!

New offering process this summer
H
ere’s a fun problem.... Our numbers
at worship have
grown to the point that our
process for coming forward
for the offering is starting to
take a LOONG time.
We thought about returning
to using ushers and taking up
the offering in the seats, but
an informal survey tells that
folks like standing and coming forward, greeting one another and receiving the symbolic stones each week, and we
don’t want to change what’s meaningful.
Page 6
Therefore, we’re going to experiment this summer with two
lines, one down each of the
center aisles to two separate
offering “stations” and then
each line will turn toward the
outer aisle to go back to the
seats.
We’ll try this for the summer
months and decide then if we
like it and if its working. If not,
we’ll try something else this
fall. Thanks for being willing to grow and
change!

Take me out to the ballgame Aug. 22
J
oin your Heidelberg friends for a night at the
ball park watching the York Revolution.
We’ve got a block of tickets for Saturday
night, August 22 at 6:30 PM. The Revs will be
playing the Somerset Patriots.
The cost of tickets for the evening will be $20.
This amount will pay for your seat and a food
voucher and will also make a bit of a donation to
Heidelberg.
Karen Howe is organizing the event and would be
glad to answer your questions. Please claim your
spot by signing up in the Auditorium soon.
Chairs for Auditorium
W
We can get additional tickets, so please feel free to
invite friend and neighbors to join us for the fun.
Sundae Sunday
S
e want to update
you on our chair
campaign!
We’ve decided to order a
batch of new red chairs for
the auditorium. These will
be similar to our Sanctuary
chairs, but just a bit narrower to make it easy to fit
more around our new round
tables in the Auditorium.
unday, July
12 has been
designated
as “Sundae Sunday.” If you recall, last year we
had a wonderful
coffee hour that
featured ice
cream sundaes made by you!
We’re funding these with memorial funds, but
challenging those who are able to help us repay the fund by donating $30, the cost of a
chair.
Here’s how it works. Please sign up in the Auditorium and indicate what you’ll bring. We need
donations of ice cream, syrups, whipped cream,
fresh fruit, candy and whatever else you like to
top your sundaes with.
So far, we have been gifted with 12 chairs
(thanks folks!)...so we’re still hoping for 38
more donations. If you’d like to “buy” a chair,
please send a check to the church office or drop
the money/check in the offering plate clearly
marked “Chairs.”
We thank you in advance.
V O L U M E XL I V – NU M B E R 7
We’re hoping for lots of donations because this
year we’ll have lots of guests. This is the Sunday when 30 youth from Shiloh Baptist and their
parents will be performing in our worship service and we’d like to make sure that everyone
can make a sundae.
Should be a real sweet time!
Page 7
New Members to join in July
N
ew Members will be uniting with our
congregation on Sunday, July 26. In
order to best introduce Heidelberg to
these new folks, there will be a meeting on
Monday, July 13 at 6 PM.
We’ll gather for a slice of pizza and spend
some time introducing ourselves. Next, the
conversation will revolve around our beliefs
and our practices. Just what is the United
Church of Christ? What do we believe? How
do we compare to other churches?
This session is not required for new members but it’s
the best way to get an overview of our community
and to answer any questions that you may have.
We’ll also talk about Heidelberg: how we’re
structured, how we run, what makes us tick.
Please let Pastor Amy know if you can attend. We
look forward to munching and talking together.
Do you support our gift card program?
A
re you
aware that
the Women
of Heidelberg sell
Giant Gift Cards
to benefit our
church?
This is such an
incredibly wonderful fund raiser
that requires so
little effort that we
want to entice more of
you to consider supporting it.
Giant Food Stores sells us
gift cards at a 5 per cent
discount. If we sell you a
card with a face value of $100, the church gets
Page 8
to keep $5. It’s that simple.
Over the years our women have raised
hundreds of dollars in this way, most
recently using the profits to purchase the
great round tables in the Auditorium.
If you shop at Giant, would
you consider purchasing gift
cards in advance and using
them like cash at any Giant?
You can pay cash or write a
check to purchase the cards.
Sara Seward or Janet Sipe
would be glad to sell you as
many as you need.
Thanks for considering this
simple way to send a little extra cash into our accounts!

Elijah Cross returns to HeidelBean July 3
W
e are quite happy to be able to welcome
musician Elijah Cross back to the HeidelBean stage on Friday, July 3.
We thoroughly enjoyed his previous performance
but bad weather kept the crowds away and we
want to have another opportunity for York to enjoy
his music.
Elijah Cross was born in California, and attended
the San Diego School of Creative and Performing
Arts before moving to New York, then Florida,
Georgia, and all of them again before settling in
Pennsylvania.
Doors open at 6 PM. Free coffee, snacks, table
games, conversation and free wi-fi.
If you can help as host, greeter or purveyor of food
and drink, please sign up or drop by. We’re also
looking for a few folks to bake this month...any
takers?

V O L U M E XL I V – NU M B E R 7
Join us on Friday, July 17 from 6-8 PM as we
take to our front steps and greet the public
during York’s creative art night, BLOOM.
We offer music and a snack to passersby and
have the chance to visit, tell our story and
show off the Sanctuary to any who are interested. It’s a great PR event and a lot of fun
too.
Wear your Heidelberg T and drop by for a
spell! Thanks.

HeidelFun - It’s time to make summer plans
I
t’s time for a good time. You’re
invited to join other Heidelbergers
for some summer fun. We’ll be
adding more events as the weeks progress, but for now, consider participating in these adventures:
Swim Party
Bowling
Danielle Glugla is organizing a summer
bowling outing and you’re invited. Join
Heidelbergers on Thursday, July 23 from 6-8
PM at Colony North , 1900 Pennsylvania Ave,
York. Games are just $1.95 each. Please sign up
in the Auditorium if you’d like to go along!
Dan and Lory Powers
are opening their pool
for a Pool Party on
Sunday afternoon, July 5 beginning at 1 PM. Grab a bite to eat
after church (we worship at 10 that morning)
and then head on over.
Their home is located at 620 Evergreen Dr.,
York. Check in with them if you need directions. Bring a snack to share!
Ice Cream
Nick and Joey HollandGarcia have suggested that
Handel’s Homemade Ice
Cream and Yogurt would
be a great place to meet up
for a summer snack.
Ropes Course
Mike Smyser is gathering another group of intrepid
atheletes to go to Round Top for a ropes course
outing again this year. We’re looking at August 2
from 1-5 PM. The open climb offers an opportunity to try a selection of high ropes course elements,
climbing walls and the zip line. $15.00 cost.
Please talk to Mike or sign up in the Auditorium if
you’d like to be included.
We’ve chosen Sunday evening, July 19 at 7
PM as a time to gather at the shop at 2310 S
Queen St., York.
Invite a friend and drop by for some good
treats.

Church World Service
For OCWM giving
Dear Heidelberg UCC,
Dear Heidelberg UCC,
Thank you for your generous support of the vital
work of Church World Service Nepal Relief. We
are honored to count you among our circle of donors. With your help we are assisting people
whose homes and livelihoods have been swept
away by natural disaster of civil conflict, providing
tents, blankets, water and food to sustain their immediate needs. But that’s just part of it.
We stay on long after media interest
has faded, helping families and communities to rebuild, stronger and more
resilient than before.
None of this work would be possible
without the generous tax-deductible
contribution of caring people like you.
Thank you again for joining us in our
mission to build a world where there
can finally be enough for all. I look
forward to what we can accomplish together in the
years ahead!
Thank you for your gift to Our Church’s Wider
Mission. We are deeply grateful for your congregation’s gift.
Your support of OCWM permits us to provide for
operating expenses, equip leaders, support clergy
in ministry, foster healthy and vital congregations,
advocate and witness for justice, respond to disasters and tragedies, send help around the
word, and preach a welcoming and open
understanding of Christian faith.
Thank
You

I am so sorry I wasn't able to be with you last Sunday. This health crisis with Taylor has been so
hard and Sat. was an especially hard day for both of
us. I was just so exhausted on Sunday. When Amy
told me about everything that transpired on Sunday
and how I was honored for my 25 years at Heidelberg, I couldn't believe it. So ironic, in all those 25
years, this was the only Sunday I was not able to
come.
But I am filled with such gratitude, humility, and
love for all of you. The gifts of flowers, the beautiful cake (Amy sent a pic), the card with all your
names and the monetary gift just "blew me
away". My sincere heartfelt thanks! You are a caring, loving and understanding congregation. I am
truly blessed to be your Minister of Music.
