In the medical and social service arenas, we must begin to consider behavior and health concerns may be better understood in the context of traumatic stress disorders How Prevalent Is Trauma? What is Trauma? Complex trauma is the unpredictable and chronic exposure to a cluster of events, most often within a child’s care-giving system, that is intended to be a child’s primary source of safety and stability. This may include family and community violence, neglect, abuse, · Studies estimate that between 3.3 million and 10 million children in the U.S. witness violence in their own homes each year · In 2010, just under 3 million children were the subject of one or more reports of child abuse or neglect with an estimated number of substantiated victims being 695,000 homelessness and poverty. § 78.3% of the 695,000 were victims of neglect § 143,000 of the 695,000 children were children birth up to age one Why is it Important to Medical and Social Service fields? The ACE Study findings suggest that certain experiences are major risk factors for the leading causes of illness and death as well as poor quality of life in the United States. It is critical to understand how some of the worst health and social problems in our nation can arise as a consequence of adverse childhood experiences. Realizing these connections is likely to improve efforts towards prevention and recovery. · The 1998 Adverse Childhood Experiences study found 44% of respondents reported suffering sexual, physical or psychological abuse as children. Perry, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Robert (Rob) Anda graduated from Rush Medical College in 1979 and received his board certification in internal medicine in 1982. In the early 1990’s, Dr. Andabegan a collaboration with Dr. Vincent Felitti at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego to investigate child abuse as an underlying cause of medical, social, and public health problems. This effort lead to a large-scale study funded by the CDC to track the effects of childhood trauma on health throughout the lifespan. They called it the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACE Study). Dr. Anda played a principal role in the design of the study, and serves as its co-principal investigator and co-founder. Dr. Bruce D. Perry is the Senior Fellow for The ChildTrauma Academy, a training and research institute working to help improve the lives of traumatized and maltreated children and their families since 1990. He has presented about child maltreatment, children’s mental health, neurodevelopment and youth violence in a variety of venues including policy-making bodies such as the White House Summit on Violence, the California Assembly and House Committee on Education and to many media outlets including National Public Radio, The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. His work has been featured in documentaries produced by Dateline NBC, the BBC, Nightline, CBC, PBS, and Japanese Public TV. Many print media have highlighted the clinical and research activities of Dr. Perry including a Pulitzer-prize winning series in the Chicago Tribune, US News and World Report, Newsweek, Forbes ASAP, Washington Post, the New York Times and Rolling Stone. He also serves as an expert-in-residence for Scholastic, Inc.
