Jaffna was at
the forefront of the civil war, and the artist's experience of
shaped a new style of art different from his earlier works.
The artist himself appears in Roadscape, which he submitted for FT5, wearing red-and-white

striped clothing to
represent a Hindu temple. making an imposing presence
as he stands at the scene of postwar reconstruction.
In
Sky. Sea and Road, Thalawatta uses pyrography to imply
the scorched earth of battles, while a blue ocean and sky
rise unsullied beyond this.
