WELCOME TO THE
HENLE Y FESTIVAL 2015
It’s with great pleasure and excitement that we present the 2015
programme for the Henley Festival.
This year we are embarking on a new venture to work more
collaboratively with artists and creative thinkers alike.
Friday night at the Festival will see a one off performance with the
Philharmonia Orchestra, soloists Gregory Porter and Laura Mvula,
trumpeter Alison Balsom, and pianist Ji Liu. It’s a night not to miss.
As ever some of the greatest pop icons will join us on the Floating
Stage on the River Thames, opening with the uber cool Jessie J,
followed by soul icon Lionel Richie. Saturday will see the incredible
show of the Gipsy Kings and Sunday’s finale with Spandau Ballet brings
the Festival to a spectacular close.
Not to be missed are our host of comedians, including Mark Watson,
Alex Horne with his show The Horne Section, and The Only Way is
Downton, plus as ever the eclectic troupe of roving entertainers will
ensure you are amused throughout the evening.
And if you want to check out what up and coming musical talent is
around, don’t miss performances throughout the night in the Salon
Quarter and Eastern Quarter.
Dining at the Festival this year has never been so superb, with Albert
& Michel Roux Jr heading up the Roux at the Riverside, plus new to the
Festival this year, Atul Kochhar and his team from Sindhu will be joining us
in the Eastern Quarter to give you a fine dining experience with a beautiful
Indian twist. Local chef Paul Clerehugh brings The Crooked Billet back for
a second year running and chef Mark Hix brings his grazing Hix Fish Dog
for those who just need a light snack during the evening.
Lastly a wonderful addition to the programme this year is our Family
Sunday, with a full programme of events for the younger members of
our audience, for more details see pages 28-29.
As ever we are incredibly grateful for our partnership with BMW and
the invaluable sponsorship we receive from all of our sponsors and
partners.
As you delve into the programme this year, we hope you’ll be as
inspired as we are, and we look forward to seeing you on the bank
of the River Thames in July!
From the team at Henley Festival.

HENLEY FESTIVAL TRUST
If Henley Festival itself is unique, its all-year-round
charitable work makes it even more so.
From the outset the Henley Festival has been intent
on sharing its successes by working in the wider
community and in 2015 we celebrate a second
year of a major partnership with The Prince’s
Foundation for Children and the Arts.
Once again thanks to the generosity of its Patrons,
Friends, Sponsors and you our audience, national
and regional projects will take place with any
profit generated at the Festival.
Profits from 2014 have seen children being given
unique opportunities to discover art, theatre and
8
poetry in Milton Keynes, Reading and in East
London where otherwise the doors would have
remained closed.
We are also proud to continue our programme
of supporting local arts organisations and
charities in and around Henley. This year we
are supporting projects with grants for Camp
Mohawk, Henley Youth Choir, Headway, and
Music on the Meadows, plus providing live music
for local care homes.
Lastly we continue a seventh consecutive year of
support for the Henley Festival Orchestra and look
forward to welcoming them to the Festival this year
during the day on Saturday.

every performance, with a vocal talent far beyond his years.
Always of the finest quality, the visual

International Superstar. 100 million albums sold worldwide. Oscar winner. 5 time
Grammy winner. Golden Globes winner. A Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, his father was a military man and his mother an
English teacher.
In 1968, Lionel, defying his parents, joined The Commodores, leaving the confines
of Tuskegee and travelling to perform in a group that he hoped would be a huge
success. Soon, small packs of girls would turn into millions of screaming fans yelling
not only his name, but also singing along with every one of his songs at every one
of his shows.
In 1981, when Lionel decided to pursue a solo career, his fans rolled with him,
watching him become one of the most successful artists of the 1980’s, earning a
string of 13 top ten hits between 1981 and 1987, including nine #1 singles. The first,
“Endless Love”, followed by the success of “Truly,” “All Night Long,” “Hello,” and
“Say You (Say Me)”, “Dancing On The Ceiling”, and the Live-Aid tune “We Are The
World” co-written with Michael Jackson.
On the heels of his 2012 album which received huge critical acclaim, in 2013
Lionel launched a global tour entitled “All The Hits, All Night Long” and he has
proved to fans that he can deliver exactly that.
You would think that Lionel would be content with his career, which has spanned
over three decades, but Lionel insists on pushing forward and marking new
territory in his musical legacy. It is of utmost importance to Lionel to maintain a
personal growing relationship with his fans, who he definitely values as one of the
many reasons for his continuing success.

PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA
The UK’s National orchestra, the Philharmonia,
is committed to presenting the same quality, live
music in venues throughout the country as it brings
to London and the great concert halls of the world.
A musical pioneer, it leads the field for its excellence
of playing, and innovative approach to residencies,
music education and the use of new technologies
in reaching a global audience. Its touring schedule
this season includes major series across Asia,
Europe and South America.
GREGORY PORTER
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Gregory
Porter is here to breathe life, vitality, passion, and
honesty into the musical genres he has loved from
boyhood, ever since Nat “King” Cole entered his
heart. Living in Bakersfield, California, an epicentre
of country music and a city with a large population
of migrants from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and
Mississippi, there was a high musical concentration
of gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz and soul. Porter’s
rolling piano, organ and brass-powered souljazz number, Musical Genocide, from his album
Liquid Spirit, talks about the record industry. “If you
manufacture everything and from the organic artist
who’s gone through something in his life to try figure
out music; if you’re only going for the sexiest, newest
thing… Well, that’ll be the death of blues, of soul….”
Following the hundreds of thousands of albums sold
worldwide, festival shows in the UK and BBC Radio
playlists, it is clear his music offers up a replenishing,
satisfying brew: you can drink deep of Gregory
Porter. And the best kind of intoxication will follow.
“I was singing that music of a bygone era with these
old church members that my mother would associate
with. And that still informs my music. Liquid Spirit is
directly from that.”

dialect of gitane) with such a consistent winning streak in the U.S., where the
group is the biggest-selling French act ever.
Albums such as the gold-certified Mosaique, Allegria, Este Mundo, Gipsy Kings
Live, Love & Liberté, Tierra Gitana, Cantos de Amor, and Volare! The Very Best
of the Gipsy Kings have provided a steady stream of hits to Billboard’s world
music, Latin, and pop charts. The ensemble’s music has been used in numerous
motion pictures, including Peter Weir’s “Fearless” and Joel and Ethan Coen’s
“The Big Lebowski.”
“ WAY BE YOND
THE STRICTURES
OF L ANGUAGE,
THESE SONGS
WILL RESONATE
WITH ANYONE
WHO LOVES
HEARTFELT,
METICULOUSLY
PERFORMED
MUSIC.”
People Magazine
For the group’s Grammy-nominated acoustic release, Roots, in 2004, the core
members of the Gipsy Kings settled into a stone villa in the small town of StAndre-de-Bueges in the south of France, where they collaborated with producer
Craig Street. For the first time in years, the band recorded without a drum kit,
synthesizer, or electric bass, bringing the music closer to its Flamenco origins.
Billboard called the record a “treasure,” and People said, “Way beyond the
strictures of language, these 16 songs will resonate with anyone who loves
heartfelt, meticulously performed music.”
The Gipsy King's Savor Flamenco won a Grammy for Best World Music Album
in 2014.

Zalvarinis is Lithuania’s
best-known folk-rock

Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic
bands having sold over 25 million records, scored
numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed
23 hit singles across the globe since their humble
beginnings as a group of school friends with dreams
of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before
they became fully-fledged members of the iconic
Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one
of the super-groups of the 80s.
After two decades apart, the band reformed in 2009,
embarking on a sold-out world tour.
In September 2014, the band premiered ‘Soulboys
Of The Western World’ to a sold out Royal Albert
Hall and reunited on stage in the UK for the first time
since 2010 performing some of their anthems, which
were a soundtrack to a generation. This unique event
was beamed by satellite to 100’s of cinemas across
the UK and Eire as the band returned to the Royal
Albert Hall for the first time since the week True was
released in April 1983.
Hot on the heels of scoring the second grossing film
in the country with the critically lauded ‘Soulboys Of
The Western World’, Spandau Ballet announce their
live return with a thirteen-date arena tour for March
2015, making them once again the hottest band in
the UK.
