Announcing the Grand Opening of the Fort Howard Guard House
Saturday July 11; 10 - 4:30pm and Sunday, July 12; Noon - 4:30 pm
Celebrate the grand opening of the Fort Howard Guard House and Commander’s Office at Heritage Hill. Enter into
Fort Howard through the sally port, just as soldiers and visitors to the Fort would have done in 1836. Enjoy plenty of
hands-on activities including a candy pull, laundry, cooking, baking and games on the parade ground. Walk into the jail
cells where prisoners would have been held. Learn about the lives of officers and soldiers; their meals, leisure time activities and
interactions with those who lived in the Green Bay area. Check out medical practices of the 1830’s at Fort Howard hospital. Stuff
mattresses on the porch. Experience an 1836 school lesson in the School House. Visit Henry Baird’s law office and learn about the
Bairds and their friendship with officers of Fort Howard. Commemorate the day as the color guard raises and lowers the flag at FortHoward.

when the animals start to worry that they’ve been
left for good, the three embark together on a
treacherous and thrilling journey to find their way
back home through the California wilderness.

promises to be one of Heritage Hill’s best seasons
ever with an eclectic blend of patriotic, folk,
bluegrass, country rock and acoustic musical
performances. Carry-ins allowed, concessions

wide array of traditional concert band music,
patriotic pieces, show tunes and other lively genres.
June 22 - Monroe Crossing: This band dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic
bluegrass gospel and heartfelt originals. Sponsored by David Meade
July 6 - Diamond & Steel: A high energy, country rock band that is a mainstay act in clubs
and on festival stages throughout the US.
July 20 - The Cougars Band: A primarily rock
& roll group fronted by 3 female vocalists.
Their specialty is belty, high energy songs with
lots of dynamic harmonies.
August 10 - Bent Grass: Enjoy bluegrass
music with a twist. These four guys will have

As visitors enter Heritage Hill’s Fort Howard through its new entrance, they will not only be treated
to a large whitewashed stockade and restored Guard House, but will find a modern exhibit housed
in the Fort area. This space, designed by Crux Creative of Lake Geneva, offers an engaging
introduction to the Fort, and supports the interpreters as they engage the visitor in Heritage Hill’s
traditional method. Entering the Fort through the sally port, visitors encounter prison cell doors on
their right and left. The doors on the right open to prison cells, which invite visitor interaction. The
doors to the left, open to a modern exhibit space that tells the story of Fort Howard in Green Bay.
Exhibit panels provide an overview of the Fort – from the 1816 building to Camp Smith to the
Fort’s redesign and relationship with the city. One panel focuses on the restoration project. Several
iPads, secured in the exhibit, enable visitors to discover more about the Fort, including court
martial cases, women in the fort and more. A free-flow timeline of national and local events helps
visitors put Fort events in context. Outside, reading panels overlooking the Fort continue up the

ADA ramp. The panels share the story of the buildings currently in the Hill’s Fort Howard
area – their historic/reproduction status and their location in the 1830s Fort. Many have been involved during the evolution of this exhibit.
Heritage Hill staff, community historians and independent researchers have been involved throughout the process, including concept,
information, management and script writing.
Preservation Corner - Home Stretch for the Guard House
Work is almost complete on the Guard House and a thorough overhaul of the Fort Howard interpretive area.
The last phases of the project are installation of the exhibit area below the Commander’s office, construction of the
massive stockade, and lastly raising the 70 foot high flag staff. The new exhibit space will combine technology,
artifacts and visual displays to provide an overview and history of the fort. The 1833 stockade consisted of 4-300
foot long walls creating a square to enclose the Fort. Heritage Hill staff and volunteers will replicate 200 feet of
the stockade with sections extending to the East and West of the Guard House complex. 240-10x10 inch timbers
will be installed to replicate the 12 foot high walls with an additional 4 feet set into the soil. The replicated flagstaff
will display a large 1836 American flag. Congratulations to the talented and dedicated staff and volunteers whose
work was recognized by the Brown County Historical Society with a Historic Preservation Award.

Heritage Hill pays tribute to past and present
members of the United States Armed Forces.
Speeches, poems, a 21 dove release by Wings of
Heart and a 21 gun salute will make this date a
truly memorable one. The day begins at 10:00
am as local veterans and historic Fort Howard
soldiers conduct a memorial service at the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of Camp Smith.
Following this FREE ceremony, the focus of
the day will be Fort Howard. Local musicians
will perform patriotic songs and music.
Concessions will offer grilled summer
favorites. Join us on this day that honors our
veterans.

A Soldier’s
Remembrance
Memorial Day
Civil War
1865, the final year of the Civil War, would
begin the process of healing a nation. Join us
to commemorate the final battles and those
who fought them including General Grant,
General Sherman, and General Lee. Two
battles will take place on Saturday and one on
Sunday. The Sons of Union Veterans of the
Civil War will be here to share their history,
mission, and tradition of the Grand Army of
the Republic. Green Bay War Gamers Guild
and Gnome Games will be conducting miniature battles in which visitors can take charge of
a regiment. Union civilian sutlers of the
Historical Timekeepers will be camped
throughout the park demonstrating trades and
goods that were essential to the war and home
effort during the 1860’s. The 1st Brigade Band
out of Watertown, Wisconsin will provide
period music concerts and a parade during
the day on Saturday and our Volunteer Music
Group will be playing period music
throughout the weekend. Take part in a soldier
scavenger hunt by interacting with
re-enactors and find out the fate of your
soldier. Concessions available.

Heritage Hill State Historical Park
Kick off the summer season with our
opening day event, Cruise Into Summer. See
different forms of transportation and how
they have changed over time. Stop by our
Fur Trade area and see traditionally made
birch bark canoes, learn how they are made
and what they were used for. Check out the
vintage fire truck at the Hose Company, hear
about the history of Green Bay firefighting
from one of the city’s own firefighters and
learn about the types of transportation
equipment they used to fight fires. See a
timeline of vehicles from a horse-drawn
1893 coach to a 1949 Chevy. Talk with the
local owners and learn about the
technological feats of each generation. Print
a letter at the print shop, see what goods
the steamers, schooners, and ships brought
to Fort Howard, and hear what travel was
like for an immigrant journeying to North
America. Concessions available.

doors free to the public for special
behind-the-scenes tours, performances, and
exclusive conversations with staff as part
of its first annual History Treasure Tour.

House), The Green Bay - De Pere
Diocese Museum), Heritage Hill State
Historical Park, National Railroad Museum,

Revealing many of the community’s
“hidden” historical treasurers, the relaxed
event encourages the public to explore
Brown County’s rich historical past, while
enjoying fun, hands-on activities in unique

Parking lot improvements continue with clearing of trees and fence line to the
south of the property. This upgrade will increase the number of parking spaces,
improve parking safety and accessibility to the Education Center for handicapped guests, and
will improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety within the lot. The majority of the project work
will be completed in August so there will be minimum disruption for visitors during the
construction phase. This project is made possible through the support of Lucille Muesel Fund
of Heritage Hill Foundation, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Village of
Allouez.

program called SHOP.COM which is a web portal that connects site visitors to thousands of

Introducing Three New Employees to Heritage Hill
Rob Kruszynski, Maintenance Technician: Rob comes to us with award winning
experiences in construction and renovation. Rob has several years of experience
in production and like many of our staff, has education and experiences in other
fields such as visual marketing, sales, and graphic arts. He was most recently a
freelance writer and photographer for Our Wisconsin magazine.
Katie Schmidt, Education and Interpretation Manager: Katie has a long history
with Heritage Hill – starting from age 9, where she attended camp here! She has a
BA in History and Music and a MM in Vocal Performance. Throughout the years,
Katie has provided support to the Education and Interpretation Department as an
Education Assistant and Interpreter.
Angela Vandenack, Volunteer Coordinator: Angela has been an active participant
and supporter of the Park for over 10 years. Angela offers customer service skills
and volunteer coordination experience. She will be assisting with organizing,
recruiting and coordinating our growing numbers of volunteers throughout the
Park.

Volunteering at Heritage Hill
We are coming close to the start of our 2015 season and we can’t wait to
get the season started with all of our wonderful volunteers! The park is
already full of activity with the start of spring school tours, and we are
still looking for volunteers to welcome all of the enthusiastic students
to their field trip at Heritage Hill. We will be having our Memorial Day
event, A Soldiers Remembrance, on May 25th to celebrate and honor
the men and women who have given their lives for our country. Then on
May 31 we welcome everyone to “Cruise into Summer” with us! Let us
know if you are interested in being a part of any of these great events! If
you are not a volunteer yet, but would like to become a part of the fun at
the park, please stop by and pick up a Heritage Hill volunteer
application, or you can get one from our website. If you are already a
volunteer at Heritage Hill, and would like to help out with bus greeting,

Book Presentations and Signings - FREE
Tuesdays, June 2 and July 7; 6:30 pm
Heritage Hill is excited to welcome Kathe Crowley Conn and Susan
Apps-Bodilly for book presentations and signings in June and July.
Both presentations are held on the first Tuesday of the month. The
Heritage Hill Gift Store will open at 6:00 pm to allow guests to
purchase that evening’s author’s book among other items.
Presentations will begin at 6:30 pm and will be followed by the book
signing. Please do not bring carry-ins for signing.
Our June Book Presentation and Signing will be with
Kathe Crowley Conn on her book “Juliette Kinzie:
Frontier Storyteller.” Ms. Conn’s presentation is entitled
“Cheer Up, Wifie!” She will share the amazing story of
Juliette Kinzie and her adventures in Green Bay and the
1830 northwest frontier.
In July, Susan Apps-Bodilly presents her book
“One Room Schools: Stories from the Days
of 1 Room, 1 Teacher, and 8 Grades.” This book
will transport young readers back in time and
make their grandparents and others of that
generation nostalgic--perhaps even prompting them to
share memories of their school days.

the Hill

Ever tried a
firkin? Not all
beer comes
in bottles or kegs. Some beer is served up in
a special container called a firkin. A firkin,
which is derived from the Middle Dutch
word vierdekijn (meaning fourth), is actually
a small barrel of beer that is one-fourth the
size of a regular barrel of beer. Besides its
smaller size, what makes the firkin so special?
The firkin is typically dedicated to housing
Real Ale (i.e., cask-conditioned ale), or beer
that has not been cold-filtered, pasteurized
and carbonated by outside equipment. The
ale beer that is housed inside the firkin is
naturally carbonated by its resident yeast. In
essence, firkin-contained Real Ale is
comparable to the ale beers that were
produced hundreds of years ago without the
modern processing which strips the beer of
many of its inherent vitamins, minerals, and
perhaps most importantly, taste. Join us this
year for the tapping of the firkin and enjoy
this historic brew. Heritage Hill along with
Dean Distributing has planned an
entertaining evening filled with the enticing
smells and mouthwatering samples from
local restaurants, over 50 selections of crafts
brews and a few samplings of wine. We will
have a bucket raffle and 50/50 raffle along
with Bill Jartz, who will be joining us for our
live auction featuring Green Bay Packer items
and many other great prizes. The live music
this year is Nashville Pipeline so wear your
dancing shoes and join in on the fun!

Come to Heritage Hill for an old
fashioned county fair complete with tasty
foods and plenty of hands-on activities.
Help with chores and see the cows,
chickens, goats and pigs at the farm. Lend a hand in the garden or in the
farm house kitchen. Test your strength and agility with our strong
person contests and lawn games including sack races, three legged races, and many more. Take
part in a pie eating contest or cheer on the contestants. Meet area 4-H club members and see
their many talents including arts, crafts, and animal care. Visit with local artisans or grab a bite to
eat at one of the many local vender stalls.

games on our green.

From Field to Fork

Take a guided walk
through three of the park’s
gardens and learn about
the crops and planting methods used.
Participants will be able to take home some
of the gardens’ faire and will be provided
with a historic recipe to try at home using
their bounty.

who were granted commissions and
stationed at Fort Howard over its
years of operation made their impact
on the area. Leaving lives of comfort
in the east, these men made their mark on
Green Bay and some made national
contributions. Learn about some of the more
colorful characters of Green Bay’s military
history from 1816 to 1852.

The common misconception
of the enlisted class is that
they were all uneducationed
low class, drunkards that were
only capable of being cannon
fodder. While some certainly
had problems, the soldiers of Fort Howard,
and the miliary of the 1830s, came from a
broad background and educational levels.
Learn about the lives of Fort Howard soldiers
and how they helped shape both Green Bay
and Wisconsin.

Gardens Tram Tour

Take a tour of the gardens
at Heritage Hill. Learn
about the different techniques and varieties
of gardening throughout the park. Bring
home some tasty samples, freshly picked,
from our gardens. A tram will take
participants through the park to visit each
garden.

Tuesdays at Heritage Hill! Tour our historic buildings,
visit our farm animals, participate in historic activities

Military Camp

army during the Civil War; spend time
marching like a soldier and trying hard tack.
While most of the focus will be on the Civil
War, campers will make a
parachute, plant a Victory Garden and learn
about other military and home-front

Girl Scout Day

It’s a special day just for Girl
Scouts! Walk into a Little
House book and experience
life in Laura’s time. Learn about this pioneer
girl who grew up to be a strong pioneer
woman and the challenges and joys that she
experienced. Come for an hour or come for
5 hours-your choice! Scout troops will travel
from activity to activity at their own pace,
spending as much or little time at each as they
wish. Enjoy one-room schoolhouse lessons,
cooking over an open hearth, historic dancing
and more! Bring your own bag lunch and
choose one of our picnic areas.
