May /June 2015 Hevel Elementary …. A Michigan Exemplary Blue Ribbon School Michael G. Phillips, Principal Hevel Herald Fantastic Field Day!! It’s hard to believe that it is already May of the 2014-15 school year, and the end-of -the-year activities are in full swing! Our Field Day is set for Friday, May 22nd. We are going to kick-off Field Day with a “Breakfast of Champions” (all items served will be in accordance to the Hevel Peanut and Tree Nut Alert status). The Hevel staff is helping with this event which will be open between the hours of 8:00 - 9:00 a. m. Please take advantage of this opportunity to stop by the school, have breakfast with your child and help us launch a very successful Field Day. If you are able to stay for the day and assist Mrs. Winston as a parent volunteer, please contact her or let the school office know. All in all, this special day should be a lot of fun for students, staff and any parents who can VIP Means Very Important Person! We will be honoring our parent volunteers at a special VIP Luncheon on Friday, May 15, 2015. An invitation will be sent out to every family. If you have served as a volunteer at Hevel this year (in any capacity), you are welcome to attend. By doing this general invitation, we hope to ensure that no volunteer is left off the list. Please join us at 10:30 for a short HELP General Meeting to close out the year. The VIP luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. Watch for further details! Year End Reminders The lost and found will be placed on tables near the front doors. Please check for items that may belong to you. Substitute Lunch Room Monitors are needed to work during student lunch hours. Please contact the Hevel office if you are interested. Hevel Cookbooks can still be purchased in the school office for $3.00. These make great gifts! My Final Year! It is with mixed feelings that I have decided to announce my retirement as Hevel’s principal. My final day will be June 30. While I love my job...and especially the wonderful students, staff and parents I’ve been privileged to work with, I am looking forward to this new phase of my life. I will have completed my 40th year with Romeo Schools as teacher at Hamilton Parsons (13 years) and principal of three elementary schools: Hamilton Parsons, Croswell and Hevel, for the past 27 years. I have enjoyed my tenure at each school but I have to admit, Hevel has been truly special! I saw the first shovel of dirt be lifted at the ground-breaking ceremony as we planned for and designed the school. I was able to help develop our “Neighborhood Philosophy “ with some of Romeo’s finest teachers and support staff. I was here for our opening ceremonies, along with the late Mr. Norman B. Hevel and his wife. Probably a favorite memory will be the day we achieved Blue Ribbon status, awarded by the State of Michigan and we heard the wonderful voices of 480 students singing the song “Choices!” and the “Hevel Cheer!” My heart will always be with Hevel and I hope to come back and visit frequently. Please accept my sincere thanks for all of your support and involvement over the past thirteen years. Together we have created a school built on teamwork and shared vision! I wish you the best for future years and am confident Hevel will continue to be the wonderful learning partnership it has been throughout the years! Thanks again! Mike Phillips Kindergarten Readiness Night All Hevel parents of incoming Kindergarten students are welcome to bring their child and attend Kindergarten Readiness Night. Date: Monday, May 11 Time: 6:00-7:30 p.m. Parents and students will have the opportunity to tour the building, visit Kindergarten classrooms, take a bus ride, be photographed for their bus tag pictures, and meet the teachers. A brief screening will also be administered to help us place students for the fall. In addition, the family will be provided with a summer take-home back pack (alphabet and number cards, scissors, books, etc.). Please mark your calendars!! Kindergarten Registrations We are continuing to take Kindergarten registrations for children who will be five years old by September 1, 2015. Please bring your child’s birth certificate, current immunization records, proof of residency, proof of legal guardianship and vision/hearing test results to the office at Hevel. Your timely registrations will help us more accurately prepare for the 2015-16 school year! Did You Know? At Hevel we have neighborhood teams. At the end of first grade your child moves directly up to the second grade teacher in the vertical team. At the end of third grade the students move directly up in their fourth grade vertical teams. Students are automatically re-shuffled at the end of Kindergarten, second and fourth grades. If you choose not to have your child move up vertically at the end of first or third grades, you may request he/she be moved to a different group. There are a few parents who want a clean slate every year for their child and we will try to accommodate you if you make this request. Our fifth graders participate in a “team teaching” approach for math, social studies and science instruction. Many language arts lessons are team taught, as well. Don’t Forget the Hevel Art Expo and Ice Cream Social!! Mrs. Ryti has been collecting student work all year and your child’s creativity will be on display on Thursday, May 7 from 4:00-6:00. The halls and showcases will be set up with individual classroom galleries. Ice cream treats will be served (for free!) in the school Cafeteria (all treats will be in accordance to our Peanut and Tree Nut Alert status). Come down and join in on the fun!
