BRENDA MACKAY (Highland Instructor)
Brenda started dancing at the age of 6 in Pictou County under the direction of Betty Smith. She
attained her teaching qualification at the age of 16 and taught while attending university. As a
competitive dancer she represented the province at the Canadian Championships on several
occasions. As a performance dancer she was a member of the original Pictou County Highland
Dancing Demonstration Team and performed in Montreal during the Olympics in 1976, in
Edmonton during the Commonwealth Games in 1978 and for the first performance of the now
Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in 1979 as well as in subsequent years. While living in
Bermuda in the late 80’s and early 90’s she taught and performed with the Bermuda Islands
Pipe Band and Dancers. After living outside the Province for over 20 years Brenda returned to
Pictou County in 2005 and started teaching again. True to her passion, in early 2014 Brenda
created a Performance Group of Pictou County Highland Dancers who had the opportunity to
perform for Prince Charles and Camilla during their recent visit to Pictou.
ERIKA BURGER (Stretching Instructor)
Erika is a former highland dancer from Dartmouth, who studied under Fran MacKinnon and was
one of the founding members of Amethyst Highland Dancers. She is a physiotherapist and
owns a clinic in Dartmouth. Erika graduated from McGill University’s Bachelor of Science in
Physiotherapy degree programme in 1995. She has practiced physiotherapy in many parts of
Canada, the USA and spent two years as a volunteer physiotherapist in Malawi, Africa. Erika’s
Masters degree, which she earned in 2004, focused on women’s health and she is currently a
PhD Candidate at Dalhousie University. Erika teaches at both Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s
Universities. She holds advanced level certification in the specialty of pelvic floor physiotherapy
and is also certified as a manual osteopath.
