Easter 2015 Hawkeye - Hawkley Hall High School

Enrichment Day for Year 11
The Enrichment Day for Year11 students at Hawkley Hall High School on Friday 16 th January provided them
with a boost in their preparations for GCSE examinations this year. The event began with a motivational talk by
the MP for Leigh and the Shadow Cabinet Health Minister, Mr Andy Burnham. Mr Burnham reflected on his
own learning journey and how it had helped shape his future pathways and career choices. His key messages to
the students were to: work hard, have self-belief, not to forget your family and community roots and to aim high.
The day proved to be a huge success with the students. They had sessions delivered by ‘Positively Mad’, which
provided them with methods of organising their study and how to revise. ‘Switched on’, gave the students guidance on how to keep focused and most importantly how to manage stress and keep healthy as the GCSEs approach. The final aspect of the day was designed to encourage the students to look forward to life beyond Hawkley Hall High School. Students completed CVs, received guidance on future career pathways, completed college
applications and undertook interviews with staff from Winstanley, St John Rigby and Wigan and Leigh Colleges.
The Y11 students experienced a thoroughly successful day, one that supported them in striving for success in
their GCSEs and beyond.

A School’s Chance to Remember
Following a successful application process, in the week prior to
February half term, two Year 10 students and Mr Parker represented the
school in Belgium and France as part of the Government sponsored
Battlefields memorial programme. The four day tour organised jointly
by Equity Travel and the Centenary Battlefields programme provided
the opportunity to visit sites along the Western Front associated with
WW1 and to reflect on the role played by our forces 100 years ago.
During the four day tour, students reflected on the following questions,
why is it still important to remember 100 years on? How have those
who served been commemorated and what was the role played by our
Empire troops?
The activities included a visit to Flanders Field and
Paschendale Museums, Tyne Cot and Thievpal/Ulster
Tower memorials as well as the opportunity to take part in
the Menin Gate ceremony held each night in Ypres. Here
Sebastian Bird represented not only Hawkley but all
schools across Greater Manchester when he was selected
to lay a wreath as part of the ceremony.
Holly Birchall-Hunt also placed a memorial cross to William
Crook, a soldier from Ince who served with the Manchester
Regiment. He is amongst the 38,000 who have no known
grave at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
The four days proved to be a life enhancing experience for
the students involved. They are now working on a project
called Legacy 110 to raise awareness amongst our local
community of the role and sacrifice made by all those who
served in WW1.

Careers Event at
Hawkley Hall High School
The students from Hawkley Hall High School in Wigan
were given a fantastic opportunity to attend a careers event
on Wednesday 4th March to speak to a range of organisations from childcare to nuclear fuel.
As part of the National Careers Week, the school organised
a careers fair which offered the students the chance to discuss their subject choices in Year 9 and post 16 options if
they were in Year 11.
Claire Knowles, Head of Careers Education and vocational
learning at Hawkley Hall High School said, “Our students
have a wide range of opportunities to explore career options as part of the curriculum. This event benefits both
parents and students respectively”. “We try to encourage our students to explore a wide range of options from
A-levels, apprenticeships and traineeships to ensure that they are making the right decisions.”

Year 7 Sports Leadership
As part of the Year 7 Sky Sports Living for Sport Leadership program, we were happy to have Commonwealth
Boxing Champion Courtney Fry visit Hawkley Hall in January. Courtney engaged the group with his Boxing
training schedule, history and life story. Throughout the afternoon he taught leadership skills which the students will use when leading activities with Primary School students over the coming months. We look forward
to Courtney's return to Hawkley when he will be working with English classes.
The students have events booked in including Key Stage 1 Fencing, Key Stage 2 Multi skills and Year 6 Summer WOWs Festival in which they will teach skills and officiate during the activities.

Premier League Enterprise Challenge
This year, Hawkley’s involvement in the Premier League Enterprise Challenge has been an overwhelming success. With
the help of Mr Yearsley and Mr Finch, five year nine students
presented their ideas of how to get more families watching
Wigan Athletic to a panel of judges including the club’s CEO,
Jonathan Jackson. They were crowned winners after impressing the judges with their ‘Latic’s Bingo’ and ‘U13’s Challenge
Card’ ideas. The team then went through to the semi-final at
Old Trafford where they competed against the winners from
other football clubs from around the North West. After wowing the audience with their ideas, charisma and jokes, the team
were taken on a stadium tour whilst the judges made their decision. Each team received individual
feedback before Hawkley were announced as the winners! They will now go on to represent the school
in the grand final at the London Stock Exchange where the CEO of the Premier League, Richard Scudamore, will be judging.
A massive well done to Scott Smith, Morgan Suffolk, Adam Rimmer, Amy Rennox and James Brien on
their fantastic achievement! - Adam Rimmer, Year 9
Big Book Quiz
Congratulations to the Year eight team who came second in
this year’s Big Book Quiz competition. They finished just half
a point behind the overall winners. Teams from other high
schools in the Wigan area competed in a quiz based on four
novels and the competition was tough with the lead changing
hands after each tense round. Miss Wilson had a huge grin on
her face when the final results were announced as her team had
done her proud! Well done to Charlotte Meakin, Gabi Ashcroft, Calista Cooke and Georgia Brookfield.
Charlotte Meakin, Year 8
World Book Day
Every year we celebrate World Book Day in school. This year was no exception as KS3 students participated in special English lessons. Year nine students discussed their favourite books before producing a trailer for one of them using the iPads. Year seven and eight students took part in lessons where
they created their own VLOGs! Even the teachers got involved by choosing their favourite books and
displaying them on their classroom doors. Students were also given vouchers to spend on books. Elsewhere in school, the library hosted a party for star readers with lots of activities for students wishing to
join in the fun! Ryan Cunliffe, Year 9
