What the Catechism of
Catholic Church Teaches...
the
What is the EUCHARIST?
The Eucharist
is the very
sacrifice of the
Body
and
Blood of the
Lord
Jesus
which
he
instituted
to
perpetuate the
sacrifice of the cross throughout
the ages until his return in glory.
Thus he entrusted to his Church
this memorial of his death and
Resurrection. It is a sign of unity, a
bond of charity, a paschal banquet,
in which Christ is consumed, the
mind is filled with grace, and a
pledge of future glory is given to
us. “Eucharist” in Greek means
Thanksgiving!

St. ANTHONY OF PADUA
TH
(Feast day: June 13 )
The well-loved Franciscan, Anthony of Padua, got his name
because he preached for a year and a half in Padua, a city in Italy,
and died there. Actually, he was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and
was baptized Ferdinand.
He entered the order of the
Augustinians there. Then he witnessed an event that caused him
to change orders and alter the direction of his life. The bodies of
five Franciscans who had been tortured and martyred in
Morocco, Africa, were brought home for burial. Listening to the
adventures of these heroic men lit a flame in Anthony’s heart,
He joined the Franciscans and sailed to Morocco.
The African climate was not good for Anthony. He became ill and
decided to return to Portugal. God had a different plan. A storm
knocked the boat off course and Anthony landed in Sicily. After a few months, he made his way
to Assisi in Italy, where Franciscan priests and brothers were holding an important meeting.
Anthony attended that meeting and probably met St. Francis of Assisi, who was then a frail old
man.
Anthony joined the Franciscans in Italy. He lived a quiet life until he attended an ordination
Mass and the priest who was to give the homily did not appear. At the last minute Anthony
was asked to preach. When the people heard him speak, they were impressed with this short,
stout man’s message and faith.
Anthony became a teacher of Franciscans and then a preacher in Italy, France, and Belgium. He
converted so many heretics through his preaching and works of mercy that he was called the
Hammer of the Heretics and the Wonder Worker. Anthony also pleaded for the poor and tried
to secure the release of people imprisoned because they could not pay their debts.
The fast pace of Anthony’s work led to poor health, and he died at age thirty-six. His fame
spread throughout the world. According to tradition, Anthony had experienced a vision of the
Child Jesus. It is a fact that he was devoted to Scripture. That is why many statues of Anthony
show him holding a Bible with the Child Jesus standing on it. St. Anthony is known as the
“Evangelical Doctor.”
CATHOLIC QUOTE...
“Therefore the Eucharistic Celebration is much more than simple banquet: it is
exactly the memorial of Jesus’ Pascal Sacrifice, the mystery at the centre of
salvation. Memorial does not simply mean a remembrance, a mere memory; it means
that every time we celebrate this Sacrament we participate in the mystery of the
passion, death and resurrection of Christ.” (Pope Francis, General Audience – February 5, 2014)
